CHRISTMAS TREES

(207) 890-5448

Opening Friday, Nov. 29 • 10am

CENTER HARBOR — The offi cial lighting of the town Christmas tree will take place at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, with free hot chocolate, cookies and caroling by members of the Center Harbor Town Band. Small Business Saturday will be celebrated all day on Nov. 30 and will showcase special offers and discounts.

The Center Harbor Community Development Association is working with American Express to celebrate Shop Small, also known as Small Business Saturday, in a big way.

According to CHCDA event Chair Michelle Taft: “American Express pioneered this national event to support and celebrate Small Busi-nesses and their contribution to their communi-ties. This is the fourth year we are continuing the tradition. So, on Saturday, Nov. 30, virtually every restaurant and retail business in Center Harbor will be offering special discounts, deals and promotions all day long.”

According to Center Harbor Parks and Recreation Director Sandy Frost, every participating business will have signs identifying themselves as partici-pants. She added, “Just look for the Small Business Saturday sign in front of the store for discounts on food, books, locally produced crafts art and just about everything else you can think of.”

This year, the town and the community develop-ment association will hold their fourth annual offi -cial Christmas tree lighting at the Town Green at 5 p.m. The entire village will kick off the Christmas season with coordinated lighting displays on virtu-ally every building.

The family-friendly event features free hot choc-olate and cookies as well as a choral performance of traditional Christmas and holiday songs by the Center Harbor Band.

Town Band leader Carlos Martinez and the rest of the band have been busy preparing a performance of traditional Christmas music for the event, with Martinez noting, “We’re honoring an old New Eng-land tradition of Christmas caroling with something for every member of the family.”

The fi rst-ever Small Business Saturday took place Nov 27, 2010. It encouraged people across the coun-try to support small, local businesses. From Wash-ington, D.C., to Washington state, governors, mayors, senators, even President Barack Obama all voiced

their support for Small Business Saturday.Michele Taft, owner of Bayswater Books in

Center Harbor, added, “This event continues to prove that big things can come in small pack-ages. Center Harbor is a small community, with unique retail businesses offering all kinds of goods and gifts, much of it locally sourced and produced here in New Hampshire.

“Plus our restaurants offer everything from casual to fi ne dining,” Taft continued.

“Shopping and dining locally means creating jobs for ourselves and our neighbors and keeping the local community economic climate healthy.”

According to Harry Viens, chairman of the Center Harbor Board of Selectmen: “The town has been working in close coordination with the Center Harbor Community Development Asso-ciation on all their events including SkateFest, LobsterFest and Small Business Saturday.

“The Center Harbor Community Develop-ment Association is made up of local businesses and organizations, volunteering our time and resources, to enhance the beauty and appeal of Center Harbor,” Viens said.

• Great explor-ers have one thing in common: a desire to leap into the unknown, no matter how danger-ous that might be.

In “Explorers,” an exciting non-fi ction storybook for children by Nellie Huang, read-ers venture into steam-ing jungles in search of lost temples, fi ght off frostbite in the Arctic and blast off into space as they meet famous explorers.

From Ferdinand Magellan’s fi rst cir-cumnavigation of the world to Barbara Hillary’s treks to the

North and South poles while in her 70s, this book documents the trials of those who rewrote our understanding

of the world. Amazing cross-sec-

tions show detailed looks inside Spanish galleons, lost cities and spaceships, hand-drawn maps reveal intrepid jour-neys in great detail, and photographs highlight the arti-facts and relics found along the way. For more great gift ideas, go to dk.com/us.

This holiday season, give the gift of discov-ery with books that let readers expand their knowledge of the world.

water sources. Shopping for foods grown and raised sustainably can reduce the footprint of your holiday menu.

You can green your holidays further by reducing your plastic consumption. It’s projected that by 2050, the total amount of plastic waste in the oceans will weigh more than all fi sh, and 99 percent of seabirds will have ingested plastics. Shop with reusable tote bags and opt for gift wrap and decor made only from sustainable materials.

• Give gifts that give back: When you make a donation this holi-day season, consider giving gifts that help protect nature, such as those found on WWF’s online gift center.

For animal lovers, WWF’s wild-life-themed gifts are a good choice. Symbolic species adoptions, are edu-cational and fun. There are more than 100 species available, ranging from favorites like sloths, elephants, tigers, pandas and polar bears, to new offer-ings like the ladybug, gentoo penguin and hawksbill turtle bale.

All symbolic adoption donations made through the gift catalog come

with an adoption certifi cate, as well as a color photo and description card of the adopted species. Adoptions of $55 or more come with a soft animal plush of the adopter’s choosing.

Other gift selections include socks, featuring fl amingoes, tigers, wolves, hedgehogs and more; T-shirts and sweatshirts; plus elephant slippers, animal puppets and panda bobble-heads. For more information, call (800) CALL-WWF (800-225-5993) or go to worldwildlife.gifts.

• Fundraise: Throwing a holiday bash? Deck the halls with purpose by combining your entertaining efforts with a fundraiser dedicated to pro-tecting the environment.

For example, with WWF’s Panda Nation campaign, you can turn any special occasion into an opportunity to protect threatened species and wild places around the world, while raising awareness about important issues.

By making small changes to your favorite holiday traditions, a joyful and rewarding holiday season can go hand-in-hand with helping wildlife and nature thrive.
