CONSTITUTIONOF
(NAME OF ORGANIZATION)
PREAMBLE
(An introductory statement, no longer than two or three sentences, stating the reason for andintent of what follows)
ARTICLE I
Name
The name of this organization shall be (full name of organization), hereinafter referred to as(shortened name of organization as it will appear throughout the Constitution). (For example:
the Student Government Association might be referred to simply as SGA throughout theConstitution).
ARTICLE II
Purpose (s)
The purpose of this organization shall be to ___________________, etc., or The purpose ofthis organization shall be ______________, etc.
ARTICLE III
Membership*
All organizations must be open to all students and the organization or its membership cannotdiscriminate because of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, or
handicap. However, academically-oriented organizations may be opened to only affiliates of
their respective discipline.
* Membership in (organizations name) shall be open to all students in good standing at the
Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University without regards to race, religion, color, creed, sex(or gender), sexual orientation or political, religious, or national belief or background.
Section 1. Eligibility: (State in complete sentences the qualifications for membership.)
Section 2. Active Membership: (State in complete sentences the qualifications for Active or
Voting membership in the organization.)

ARTICLE IV
Officers

Section 5. Vacancies and Removal: A vacancy in the office of the President/Captain shall be
filled by the Vice-President unless he or she is unable to serve, at which time the vacancy shallbe filled by election of the members by a two-thirds majority of votes cast within two weeks of
the vacancy or removal. A vacancy in the office of the Vice-President shall be left vacant withthe President/Captain delegating the duties of that position.
ARTICLE V
OPTIONAL Committees
Section 1. Standing Committees: (State in one sentence the standing committees of the
organization.)

ARTICLE VI
Faculty Advisors
Section 1. Number and Term of Office: (Indicate in complete sentences the number ofAdvisors organization is to have and how long each will be asked to serve.).
Section 2. Method of Appointment: (Please keep in mind that the Advisor is selected by the
members (including executive board) of the student organization. State in complete sentenceshow the Advisor is selected by the organization. )
Section 3. Duties: (All LIU Brooklyn student organizations are required to have an advisor.
These advisors must be faculty, staff or administrators of LIU Brooklyn. Indicate in completesentences what responsibilities the Advisor is expected to fulfill. Advisors are responsible for
the overall supervision and direction of the organization. While advisors do not make decisionsfor the organization, as their primary responsibility is to counsel and recommend, they are
required to monitorthe behavior, finances, and operation of the organization, to indicateapproval of events and spending by reviewing and signing the room reservation requests,
minutes, and other financial documents and reviewing direct payment request forms, as well aslend support in planning and execution of events, and act as liaison on the student organizations
behalf in controversial matters. LIU Brooklyn student organization advisors are also required to
attend all on-campus functions sponsored by the organization, or to recommend an alternativeadministrator or faculty, approved by the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development, toattend in their stead. In the case of the LIU Brooklyn student media organization, advisors are
required to render technical advice in maintaining up-to-date, healthy equipment toward smoothoperations.)
ARTICLE VII
Meetings
Section 1. Regular Meetings: (Please keep in mind that the policy is that all student
organizations hold meeting at least once every two weeks. Indicate in complete sentences howoften and approximately when regular business meetings are to be held.)
Section 2. Special Meetings: (Include in complete sentences when special or Emergency
Meetings: are to be called, by whom, and how members are to be notified.)

Section 3. Parliamentary Procedure: All regular and special meetings of the name oforganization shall be run under the rules of parliamentary procedure with Roberts Rules of
Order revised as reference.
Section 4. Quorum: (A quorum usually consists of more than half of the total active
membership. Quorum = 2/3 majority of your clubs membership)
Section 5. (Optional) Required Attendance at Meetings: (Indicate in complete sentences the
attendance requirement.)
ARTICLE VIII
Amendments
Section 1. Procedure of Amendment: An amendment must be submitted to the Office ofStudent Life & Leadership Development (M311) for approval before it becomes official.
(Indicate in complete sentences the procedure for offering an amendment to the Constitution: As
a general rule, amendments are submitted in writing and are read at two meetings before a vote istaken.)
Section 2. Ratification: [Indicate in complete sentences the vote necessary to ratify an
amendment, etc. Ratification is usually accomplished through either a two-thirds or three-thirdsvote of the active membership. In all cases, an amendment must be submitted to the Director of
