Corporate Social Responsibility Report: 2013
Above and beyond our mission to Delight Our Members is our
unwavering commitment to improve the lives of all Members —
whether they’re Team Members, Club Members or members of our
local and global communities. This year again, BJ’s took action on new
opportunities to make a real difference for those whom we serve.
BJ’s is dedicated to providing Members with high-quality, brand-name food and merchandise at prices that are significantly lower than supermarkets, supercenters, department stores, drug stores and specialty retail stores. BJ’s carries the most product variety of any wholesale club, with more than 7,000 items, including supermarket-sized staples, USDA Choice meats, all-natural and certified organic products and stock-up items. BJ’s is the only wholesale club to accept all manufacturers’ coupons and for greater convenience, offers the most payment options, including EBT.Giving back has always been at the very core of BJ’s culture. Through local clubs, corporate sponsorships, in-kind donations, volunteerism, national programs and the BJ’s Charitable Foundation, BJ’s supports and enhances programs that provide vital services within each community we serve.Headquartered in Westborough, Massachusetts, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc. is a leading operator of warehouse clubs in the eastern United States. The company operates more than 200 Clubs in 15 states.
Dear Reader,
Welcome to our first Corporate Social Responsibility Report. This provides an overview of
all the work we do at BJ’s Wholesale Club to ensure that we conduct ourselves and run our
business in a manner that is true to our Core Values of Team, Community, Respect and Integrity.
The title of this report is “People, Products, Planet” because of the work that our Team Members
do every day to ensure we take care of the people around us, that the products we offer meet
the highest standards and that our operations go the extra inch to reduce our impact on
natural resources.
One of the things I think about most when it comes to our Members is being a relevant and
trusted ally. Our Members are not just looking for a great value; they want a retailer they can trust.
We know our Members as well as any other retailer on the planet. This allows us to offer
products and services that align with what is important to them, whether it is GMO-free
food options or fair trade coffee that not only perks them up, it also gives farmers in Belize
an opportunity to improve their lives.
Being a good global citizen is what our Members expect, and this report is designed to
show the full breadth of programs and initiatives that help us do good while doing well.
I know you will be delighted by what you learn in this report. I also hope it leaves our
Team Members and Club Members feeling proud of their association with BJ’s and
what we’re accomplishing for the betterment of all.

Part of being a sustainable and healthy business is having healthy employees and well-cared-for communities.
BJ’s has a Wellness Ambassador Network, which establishes a contact at each Club location to encourage wellness across all Clubs and Home Office departments. Plus, BJ’s has developed a deep commitment to support our communities with multiple ways for Team Members to contribute their many talents and resources where it counts the most.

Feeding Communities Program donates millions of pounds of food each year. Launched in 2011, in partnership with Feeding
America® and its food banks, and local member
agencies, BJ’s Feeding Communities Program
is a company-wide effort to help in the fight
against hunger in our communities.
Instead of discarding good, wholesome and
nutritious unsold food, our Clubs are donating
millions of pounds of food each year —
including fresh produce, baked goods, frozen
meats, dairy, fish and cheese — to help support
42 food banks in the 15 states BJ’s serves.

Giving is also saving. Below is the amount of surplus meat, produce, dairy and bakery
items that has been donated since the inception of the program,
plus cost avoidance and reduced landfill pressure. Poundage is
reported by partner food banks, for 2013.
At the close of 2013, BJ’s had donated over 22 million pounds
of frozen meat, poultry and fish, dairy and bakery products.
That is the equivalent of over 18 million meals.

Get InVOLved Employee Recognition Program.BJ’s encourages all Team Members to make the time to give back to their
local communities. BJ’s makes it twice as rewarding by recognizing those
who volunteer and making a donation to the Team Member’s cause.
Everybody wins.
Some highlights of the program include:
• Volunteer Guidebook to help get volunteer events started
• Encouragement and resources to participate in any number of national
service days, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, National
Volunteer Week, and 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance
• Annual peer nomination process for recognition of volunteer efforts
AT BJ’s, VOLUNTEERING TIME TO COMMUNITY SERVICE IS A WIN ALL AROUND
WHEN TIMES GET TOUGH, TEAM MEMBERS STEP UP
A unique way to support our Team Members in need.In 2012, BJ’s was excited to announce our charitable fund designed to provide
assistance to Team Members and their immediate families. The fund receives
contributions from Team Members across the company that are used to pay for
expenses incurred as a direct result of qualified hardships such as injury, illness,
death, fire, unforeseen sale/foreclosure of a rented home or natural disaster.
As part of our Team Members Giving Program, Team Members can contribute to this
fund through our payroll deduction program. In its first months, 19 applications were
approved by the Team Member Selection Committee and $30,244 was granted.

Steps-A-Day Program were given a pedometer and a personalized website to
help track their daily steps and progress. In total, 2,648 Team Members
participated and walked 160,000 miles in 52 days.
American Heart Association recognized BJ’s as a Fit-Friendly Work Site.As a “Gold” level workplace, our work sites fulfill
criteria such as offering employees physical
activity support, increasing healthy eating options
at work and promoting a wellness culture.
BJ’s is also an annual sponsor of the Boston Heart
Walk and GO Red for Women events, donating
over $45,000 to the Boston-area group.

FOR 240 TEAM MEMBERS, IT WAS TIME TO QUITBJ’s Tobacco-Free Workplace.As of January 1, 2013, BJ’s became a
tobacco-free workplace. Plus, as of
January 1, 2014, BJ’s Distribution Center
became tobacco-free as well.
In addition to a tobacco-free workplace,
BJ’s introduced Cigna’s Quit Today Program
for Team Members who are trying to quit
smoking. Wisely, 240 Team Members
used this program to go tobacco-free.
Team Member Giving made easierthrough payroll deductions. The Team Member Giving Program provides an easy
way for BJ’s Team Members to donate to their local
communities. Team Members select an organization
of their choice from a list of 13 charities that
represent a broad array of causes and interests.
Donations are made through a payroll deduction
program with the option of either a one-time or
weekly payroll deductions. In 2013, our Team Members
donated $227,350 to our partner charities:
BJ’s Aisle Help Fund

that can be used as discretionary, self-directed funding.
• Over the past 18 years, the Adopt-A-School Program’s
mission has been to give adopted schools support to
enhance existing programs and curriculum objectives.

In 2005, BJ’s Charitable Foundation was established to
enhance and enrich community programs that primarily
benefit children and families. The program’s goal is to create a
positive, long-lasting impact on the communities BJ’s serves.
The Charitable Foundation contributes the majority of its
funding to organizations that help people in need by
providing services in areas of self-sustainability, hunger
prevention, health care and education. Last year, BJ’s
Charitable Foundation granted $2,460,105
to 376 nonprofit organizations.
GIVING WHERE IT REALLY COUNTSBJ’s Charitable Foundation continues to help the most vulnerable.
Since 2005, BJ’s has donated more than $16 million to over 1,800 community organizations in our 15-state footprint. Learn more: BJs.com/charity

During the 2013 Community Kids’ Toy Drive,
BJ’s Clubs and the Home Office donated over
to 206 local nonprofit organizations.
BJ’s Power of Pink Program increasesawareness, resources and funding. BJ’s Power of Pink Program provides an opportunity each October
for our vendor community to contribute funds to our partner,
The National Breast Cancer Foundation. Vendor involvement in
the program is promoted through various marketing vehicles to
enhance the Member recognition of vendors’ brands with this cause.
At the same time, Members are provided access to valuable early
detection resources and the opportunity to purchase products
that support this important cause.
BJ’s VENDORS JOIN IN TO SUPPORT NATIONAL BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION
Early Detection Plan downloads are increasing due to thisprogram, and more women and families are able tofind helpful resources when faced with a difficult situation.
In 2013, BJ’s, with our Vendors’ support, raised
to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
$410,000
The Community Kids’ Toy Drive. Each year, BJ’s promotes a company-wide giving
initiative around the holidays that engages Team
Members and Club Members to give back to
the community. The Community Kids’ Toy Drive
invites Members to donate toys that are
distributed to local nonprofits.

1,000,000 TREES PLANTED BY 2020
Next year, BJ’s hopes to plant another142,854 trees across BJ’s footprint.
BJ’s teams up with Arbor Day Foundation. In 2013, BJ’s joined forces with the Arbor Day Foundation
to plant over 1 million trees by the year 2020 in our
nation’s forests — especially in communities devastated by
natural disasters.
During the spring of 2013, BJ’s donated over 142,900 trees
and will continue to do so annually through 2020.
In October 2012, the New York and New Jersey area was
hit by Hurricane Sandy. After the storm, FEMA designated
much of the region a natural disaster zone where amid the
devastation, thousands of trees were lost.
Because of our investment in the environment, BJ’s
decided to use a portion of our Arbor Day investment to
help with replanting. We hope to continue providing new
trees to communities rebuilding after natural disasters.
BJ’s Fuel Your Fundraiser Program.BJ’s Fuel Your Fundraiser Program empowers nonprofits and schools to raise money for their programs by selling
discounted Memberships. In 2013 alone, $134,475 was paid back to the community through this simple program!

SBJ’s continues to raise the standard with forward-thinking environmental and sustainability programs. We provide our Members with high-quality merchandise and food while ensuring the long-term health of local and international communities and sourcing environments.
Many claims in the retail world around sustainability or environmental stewardship are unregulated. At BJ’s, we self-regulate and as such hold ourselves and our vendors to the highest standards through uncompromising published guidelines and oversight.
BJ’s sustainability efforts in merchandising fall into four categories.
• Reducing, which means that vendors minimize the use of natural resources such as land, raw materials, energy and water in their product development.
• Responsible Sourcing, which means that vendors utilize our natural resource base in a way that meets the needs of today without compromising resources for future generations. This ensures practices that are good for the environment and good for their employees.
• Recovering Resources, which means that vendors reduce further need for resources through practices such as material recycling, water conservation and the development of products that can be used multiple times.
• Lessening Environmental Impact where we ensure our vendors are using best practices around disposal of waste and management of their carbon and greenhouse gas emissions.

BEST PRACTICES, BEST SEAFOOD —TODAY AND TOMORROWBJ’s Seafood Sustainability Partnership.BJ’s goal is to continue to provide safe, quality seafood
at an excellent value for years to come without compromise.
We’re committed to offering our Members the freshest
high-quality fish and seafood, while diligently working toward
100% sustainability. Currently, greater than 95% of BJ’s seafood comes from sustainable sources.
Our efforts include:
• Partnering with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership and the Marine
Stewardship Council to evaluate fisheries and provide standards for use
• Establishing a farmed fish policy — all suppliers must demonstrate
a long-term commitment to sustainable practices
• Enforcing a wild-caught fish policy — all seafood must be legally
caught and not from over-fished populations
Today:
• Ensuring chemical-free shrimp for our freezer cases containing
only shrimp and salt, never artificial preservatives
Tomorrow:
• Ensuring a 100% sustainable seafood supply by 2014

NO CHILD LABOR NO HUMAN TRAFFICKING NO UNSAFE CONDITIONS
Steps 1 – 3 must be documented by photo evidence and
approved by BJ’s. If the manufacturer fails to complete any of
the required steps or is found to have multiple/flagrant
violations, BJ’s will not accept any goods produced by the
facility and notify the relevant authorities. To date, four children
were discovered, released and reunited with their families as
part of our social compliance program in 2013.
New — Troubled Regions Program: This policy allows BJ’s to
identify areas (e.g., Bangladesh) that could create sourcing
issues or business interruption, and implement enhanced
social reviews. We recommend that our Vendors do not source
from areas of the world that are plagued with civil or social
unrest, violations of human rights law, or repeated incidents of
unsafe or unfair working conditions. This helps BJ’s to avoid
crisis situations.
Starting 2014, all vendors must acknowledge that they are
not using Uzbekistan cotton. Uzbekistan has state-sanctioned
use of forced and child labor in cotton production.
Our Merchandise Team works with vendors to ensure
products are not made using manufacturing practices
that rely on child labor or unsafe working conditions.
We achieve this through the BJ’s Social Compliance
Program, which ensures our vendors are following
business practices that adhere to BJ’s Vendor Code of
Conduct. The program requires annual Social
Accountability Audits of our vendors’ manufacturing
facilities. The audit evaluates several human rights
concerns, including child labor, human trafficking and
safe working conditions. If a facility fails any one of
the audit areas or is in violation of our Vendor Code of
Conduct, BJ’s takes a Fix, Not Avoid approach to try and
remedy the situation when possible. This approach
allows BJ’s to have an impact on the people supplying
our merchandise instead of walking away and leaving
workers without jobs.
As an example of Fix, Not Avoid, the photo above right,
shows an underage worker, with her mother and the
factory owner, being paid owed wages and given a bus
ticket home — requirements outlined in BJ’s Child Labor
Policy. This child was working at a manufacturer’s factory
and was discovered during a BJ’s Social Accountability
audit of the facility. The facility complied immediately
with our requirements, which include:
1. The worker is immediately stopped from working and
released from any obligations
2. The worker receives all wages due immediately
3. The manufacturing facility must purchase a ticket to
transport the worker home
BJ’s Social Compliance Program — a 'Fix, Not Avoid' approach.

Ethical Bakery Program:Fair Trade and Palm Oil.BJ’s values the importance of high-quality products for
their Members. The Ethical Bakery Program ensures
bakery items contain quality ingredients that are sourced
in a manner that does not harm the environment and
ensures farmers and workers are being fairly compensated.
Through the Ethical Bakery Program, BJ’s created a guide
for all buyers on the effects of unregulated palm oil.
Palm oil is an effective and healthy ingredient grown in
warm, tropical climates, most commonly in Indonesia and
Malaysia.
Unfortunately, valuable rainforest
land is often burned and cleared to
build the palm oil plantations.
BJ’s is committed to using responsibly
sourced oil. We work with our
vendors to ensure that the palm oil
used in our products is traceable to
a fair and responsible source.
In 2012, BJ’s began collecting palm
oil data from Own Brands Bakery
suppliers as part of the BJ’s Own Brands
Program. In addition, in 2013 BJ’s
began monitoring Health and Beauty
Products. By the end of 2014, all BJ’s
Own Brand products containing
palm oil will have deforestation-free
palm oil.
BAKED GOODS TASTE BETTER WITH ETHICAL INGREDIENTS
Farm to Club Program in every BJ’s location.“BJ’s defines local as grown within the state in which it is sold. We have
farms dedicated to growing products for us,” said Produce Merchant
Dominic Viglione. “We want to show Members that we support the state
and are supporting the local farmer.”
BJ’s has working relationships with one or more farmers in each of the
15 states we operate in. These farmers provide our Clubs with peppers,
cucumbers, tomatoes, green beans, corn, eggplant, and both green and
yellow squash. With an average of three farms per state, we are proud of
our 40 farmer partnerships, and plan to continue growing these
important local alliances.
BUYING LOCAL IS BUYING FRESH
Just one of our 40 farmer partnerships Scott and Wayne Hutkoski now cultivate 200 acres of farmland located in the Connecticut River Valley growing produce for BJ’s Farm to Club Program.
Since BJ’s strives to provide high
quality and responsibly sourced
products, Fair Trade Certified
sugar is a top priority. In many
developing countries, farmers
and workers are not receiving an
equitable or fare wage for their goods.
Through the Merchandising Environmental Stewardship
Program, BJ’s ensures that in developing countries,
farmers and producers are paid
a fair wage for their goods and
ensures all Fair Trade labeled items
contain a minimum of 25% fair
trade products.
And we took it a step further to
specify that all sugar in our baked
goods comes from Belize. This
allows us to have a bigger impact
in this region.
In 2012, Belizean farmers
received an extra $10,000 (U.S.),
which allowed them to reseed
their land, build communal
bathrooms where there was no
running water and send more
children to school.
16 17
BJ’s All Natural and Organic Labeling makes it clear and easy for Members. The goal of this program is to make it easy for Members to identify
products they may prefer that meet BJ’s highest standards for All
Natural and Organic. Members can now walk down aisles where green
and brown pricing signage clearly indicate that all the products there
will comply with BJ’s All Natural Program and Federal Organic
standards. Members will also know that these items will meet their
own high standards and expectations.
Some examples of BJ’s and Federal standards:
• Any All Natural meat products have no additives.
• Animals never receive hormones, antibiotics or animal by-products.
• Clubs currently carry 149 All Natural and 125 Organic products.
'ALL NATURAL ' — NOW YOU’LL KNOW IT WHEN YOU SEE IT
PLA
NET Our Energy and Operations teams here at BJ’s are always pursuing ways to
save resources throughout the Clubs, Home Office and Distribution Centers.
There are a wide range of programs in place that promote savings of not only resources, but money, time and processes. Energy efficiency and recycling are not only great for the environment, but are rewarding business practices.
In this section:• 2013 Recycling Results• 100% Paperless Payroll • Save-a-Watt Program• Habitat Preservation • Solar Panel Program • Skylights Savings

RECYCLE, REDUCE, RETHINK—COMPANY- WIDE EFFORTS ADD UP
Recycled at the Clubs:Old Corrugated Cardboard
54,000 tons of cardboard: earning $1.75M in rebatesTrash Optimization: Performed random compactor audits to maximize recycling. Increased average weight of compactors round tripping to the landfill from 10 to 11 tons per haul.
10% increase in compactor optimization
39.15% decrease in diesel truck trips Directly reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Total program savings: 2,782 trips and $363,349 Over the last 2 years
Total from rebates and savings: $6,715,006
2013 Recycling Results.BJ’s entire company plays a key role in recycling efforts — from the Clubs, to the Distribution Centers to the Home
Office. It’s a fact, recycling is great for the environment and a rewarding business practice.
Below are some of the significant company-wide recycling accomplishments of 2013.
100% Paperless Payroll rolls out.Historically, BJ’s sent out 24,000 live checks and paper pay statements and
mailed over 200 overnight mail boxes weekly. In total, that is over 1 million
pieces of paper and 10,000 boxes being used as part of the weekly payroll
process. However, BJ’s moved to 100% paperless weekly payrolls.
Team Members were encouraged to sign up for direct deposits or the
alternative option, ADP ALINE Paycard. As a result of BJ’s commitment
to environmental sustainability, this program has helped preserve
1 million pieces of paper and eliminate $125,000 in overnight
mail fees annually.
1 MILLION PIECES OF PAPER AND 10,000 BOXES–SAVED!
'ENERGY COMMANDER' TAKES CHARGESave-a-Watt Program. All Clubs have an Energy Commander who is responsible for reducing
energy costs and implementing programs from the Home Office.
This initiative is estimated to save an average of $75,000 annually.
One of the key strategies of the Save-a-Watt Program is the Dark Club
Lighting Survey whereby the Energy Commander asks Club managers for
verification that all after-hours lights are set up to save, by:
• Ensuring that only half the overhead sales lights are on
• Shutting off office and restroom lights, and using occupancy
sensors to turn on only when in use
• Allowing only necessary receiving area lights to remain on
• Shutting off back-of-the-house lights, such as deli, bakery, meat
room, etc., and using wall switches for light only when occupied
BJ’s also reduces energy costs during the day by:
• Turning off all exterior wall-packs and pole lights
...AND IT JUST KEEPS ADDING UPMore Recycling Results for 2013.

WITH SUNLIGHT, SAVINGS ARE LOOKING UP BJ’s Skylights save energy. In select Clubs, we’re harnessing the sun so
Members can enjoy warm, natural light while
they shop. During the day, as sunlight streams
through skylights, lights are dimmed.
As daylight fades, energy-saving fluorescent
lights gradually turn on so the Clubs stay bright.
BJ’s ROOF PANELS POWER THE CLUBS Solar Panel Program.
To date, we’ve donated roof space for solar panels at 18 Clubs in
6 states. We then purchase the 4,800 kW they generate — that’s
enough to power 3,700 homes for a year. Plus, the money saved
can also help fund additional green energy initiatives!
Solar Panel Program:
18 Clubs producing 4,3000,000 kWh —that’s enough to power 3,700 homes for a year.
Habitat Preservation on a local level. In several Club locations, BJ’s has been involved in
Habitat Preservation and Wetlands & Maintenance
Restoration in response to local community needs.
Examples of these programs include:
DC 800 (Uxbridge) – Involved in Turtle Habitat
Protection of 3 endangered species that nest on the
property. BJ’s continues to annually monitor and
inspect the turtle nesting areas and property enclosure.
Club 175 (Revere) – Received a Certificate of
Compliance for the wetlands in 2012. The Club has an
ongoing monitoring program that consists of regular
inspections for quality of vegetation and storm water
maintenance.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE CLUB BY CLUBClub 321 (Hyannis) – Cape Cod Preservation: Reduction
of vehicle traffic through encouraging use of public
transportation and bicycling to work.
Club 031(Fairfield) – Wetland Mitigation Project:
BJ’s actively manages a wetland restoration project,
removing and controlling invasive species and re-planting,
including a plan to add a bench and conservation
signage so Club Members, Team Members and others in
the community can enjoy all the new improvements.
