Let’s Help Kids began with a children’s story. Not the prince meets princess type, but one called Have You Filled a Bucket Today (by Carol McCloud) that called on children to use their imaginations to be mindful and help others.

Six-year-old Rachel realized how fortunate and happy she was and that other children were not as lucky to have trips to the movies, a summer camp experience, a new bicycle, or even a Halloween costume. Let’s Help Kids was born.

Today, Let’s Help Kids is creating happy childhood memories for elementary school-aged children across Maryland, Virginia, and DC whose families are experiencing financial hardship. Since our inception 5 years ago we have brought happiness to more than 1500 children.

What We Do to Help Kids

Let’s Help Kids, a 501(c)3 non-profit, works to meet non-basic needs for children. While many worthwhile organizations exist to provide food, shelter, and financial assistance to families who are struggling to make ends meet, LHK provides “the extras.” No one needs a birthday cake or music lessons. But for kids who can’t have these and other items or experiences because of a financial hardship, there is a sense of loss and a feeling of not being the same as other children.

The happiest childhood memories most people treasure are simple ones. But you can’t recall the day you learned to ride a bike if you don’t have one. You can’t laugh with your friends about the latest summer blockbuster if you can’t afford to see the film. And if you are a child with a talent for dance, music, art, or sports you need the right equipment and lessons to succeed.

Who is Eligible?

• Kids from K through 6th grade• Kids identified as a member of a

family that is experiencing financial hardship

• In order to receive a gift, a child must be referred to LHK by a third party such as a social worker or a teacher.

How We Raise Funds

LHK believes happiness needs to be shared and our fundraising events are designed to be family friendly and fun. Throughout the year, we hold a variety of events from an annual art auction, a formal “dual” gala (growns-ups and kids!), to celebrating “national ice cream for breakfast day.” We ask for financial contributions and corporate sponsorships to host and attend these events and promote them to the community.

there are many for-profit companies and business owners that are doing amazing things in our community and making a huge impact in the lives of many. Globally there is definitely a trend toward recognizing the value, importance and responsibility of good corporate citizenship. Daily we learn more about businesses that subscribe to the concepts of "Social Entrepreneurship," "Conscious Capitalism," ‘Cause Marketing," and the formation of "Benefit or ‘B’ Corporations." This trend often results in blurred lines between "for-profit" and "non-profit" – which personally, I think is a good thing and encourages transparency.

For this "First Annual Giving Issue" it is such an honor and privilege to spotlight some of the people within our region who are "Doing Great by Doing Good." The six individuals we chose for this issue are most definitely MVP’s of Business (both for-profit and non-profit) and clearly making a positive impact both locally and globally. We also wanted to share some examples of how local businesses are giving back, as well as to provide a more in-depth look at the positive impact and growing trend of "Cause Marketing."

As 2015 comes to a close, I want to thank all of you who have helped to make BizPeake Journal a reality. There are way too many to mention but please know that my heart is full with gratitude and that none of this would have been possible without you. In addition to our vendors, advertisers, and readers, I’d like to express my gratitude to the many people who have shown me so much kindness and support during my first year as an official “Annapolitan.” The fact that I am now rooting for Navy, know what a Terp is, and am saving up my dirty socks to burn in the spring, are all great signs for a rousing 2016!!!

Blessings to you and yours this holiday season.

These are words and a belief that live within the core of my being. Like many of you, I have been given

much. So many blessings – especially... my daughter Jordan, son-in-law Alexi and loyal office companion, Zoey. And for each I am extremely grateful. My gratitude becomes even more pronounced as I watch or read about the tragedies, travesties and tribulations being endured by many around the world, particularly innocent children. As one who has been given so much, I feel that it is my responsibility to share my blessings, gifts, talents, time and resources with those that are less fortunate or those who could use them to help pay it forward.

Around this time each year I reflect upon the causes that are important to me and the societal issues that tug at my mind and heart. This helps me to make a decision as to which non-profit organizations I would like to support with either my time, talent or treasure (however minimal that may be). Being new to Maryland and this region in particular, I wanted to learn more about my giving options. Quickly it became evident to me that there are so many wonderful organizations and I wanted to share all of them with our BizPeake Journal readers, thus a non-profit directory.

Not surprisingly, I found that it is not only non-profit organizations that are doing great work and making a difference, but

Is there a business strategy that is good for everyone? Can your businesses, small or large, find a way to help the community,

improve your company’s climate, enhance employee loyalty, and improve profits? Cause marketing can help you reach those heady goals; you’ll be able to say “yes” to all these positive outcomes.

What is cause marketing and how does it fit in with your business? Cause Marketing, according to the industry source, the Cause Marketing Forum, “encompasses a wide variety of commercial activity that aligns a company or brand with a cause to generate business and societal benefits.”

When a company adopts a char-itable organization or program, the corporate culture shifts.

Roger W. Ferguson, Jr., Pres. & CEO of TIAA-CREFF, summarized the business mindset that has fueled a growth in cause marketing as well as other methods of supporting non-profits, “We need to appreciate that efforts to ‘do well by doing good’ can have strategic relevance for all businesses by reducing risk, enhancing corporate reputation and competitive position, and providing opportunities for growth.”

Cause marketing provides a fiscally sound method for businesses to “do well

by doing good.” Nielsen surveys from 2013 and 2014 found that consumers look for companies that integrate social responsibility into the corporate culture, and these potential customers are willing to “pay more for products and services that come from companies that engage in actions that further some social good.” For 2015, the Cause Marketing Forum estimates $1.92 billion of revenue will be generated through cause marketing.

According to an annual survey of corporate giving conducted by The Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) and The Conference Board, after surveying 271 multi-billion dollar companies, found that “while there were increases for a majority of companies on an individual basis, giving rates largely stabilized across the sector from 2012-2014. This stabilization shows that the business case for societal engagement is strong, with companies increasingly seeing community investments as essential to their operations.” Recently, Amazon and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) announced their joint campaign. Up to 8% of every purchase made through www.NAMI.org/Amazon will go to NAMI. Perhaps you remember Nike and Bank of America’s cause marketing project to fight HIV AIDS? Or have you donated to Starbuck’s “Let’s Create Jobs for the USA” campaign and are you wearing a solidarity bracelet? Campaigns can be point-of-sale, like NAMI/Amazon or Starbucks/Jobs, or

they may be focused on an activity or an event, or in-kind contributions, providing skilled personnel to assist non-profits, or some combination of these approaches. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the marathons and 10k runs sponsored by various local businesses to benefit particular charities or causes. I bet you remember the sponsors’ names and logos as well as you remember the actual event.

Research shows that customers look for companies that support social causes. Clients and customers will put their money down to support socially responsible company partners, even at a cost to their pocketbooks. Why would a business not want to partner with a non-profit to do good?

Bruce Burtch, marketing consultant and author, talks about “Putting two or more organizations together and executing a marketing campaign… with a shared vision that inspires all parties.” When a business adopts a non-profit and forms a partnership to market philanthropic giving, everybody wins. A successful marketing campaign, notes Aysse Gregory in SitePoint, benefits the sponsoring business with:

• Increased brand loyalty• Enhanced employee moral• Increased sales• Positive press coverage and corporate

reviews• Differentiation from competitors

The non-profit partner wins too with:

• Expanded public awareness of its cause• Increased funding• Stronger public support

BUILDING ON SUCCESS: Cause Marketing and Your Business

Page 9: Bizpeake journal Issue #3

Issue #3 Giving BizPeakeJournal.com 9

When a company adopts a charitable organization or program, the corporate culture shifts. Burtch refers to that shift as a “glow” that suffuses all participants. Management and employees know they are working to advance a social good, perhaps by supporting a local school or undertaking the clean-up of a stream or woodland area. Clients and customers understand that their purchasing dollars are serving two purposes, supplying the customer’s need and supporting the needs of the community.

The business and the non-profit are “co-branding,” which re-quires a wise partnering match-up at the outset.

Another example of the synergy of cause marketing was Prepare Bay Area, a partnership between Pacific Gas & Electric and the American Red Cross in 2005-2007. This partnership was supported by an unprecedented cause marketing campaign developed by Burtch which raised over one-million for the Red Cross, garnered three-million in media coverage and motivated the training of a record-setting one-million people in disaster preparedness. Everyone won. Burtch points out that this campaign exemplifies the “glow” of altruism that is essential to successful cause marketing.

Not every cause marketing partnership needs to have dollars flowing from the company to the charity. Some companies provide pro bono work for the non-profit; your bookkeepers or mid-level management could step in to help a struggling non-profit establish a healthy business presence. Or, you could offer employees paid release time to work on a community project, perhaps helping out in a school or cleaning-up a community park. In 2015, 29% of charitable funds went to education-related charities. 25% was donated to health and social services programs, and 15% went to

community and economic development programs, according to the CECP survey. Many of those dollars were raised through cause marketing.

For 2015, the Cause Marketing Forum estimates $1.92 billion of revenue will be generated through Cause Marketing.

In his 2013 book, Win-Win for the Greater Good, available as a free download on his web site www.bruceburtch.com , Burtch emphasizes the win-win strategy of embedding a cause consciousness into your company’s culture. If charitable giving and engagement is integral to your business plan and your employees’ consciousness, there is a sense of mission or purpose that lifts spirits and enhances performance – that glow.

A word of caution, however; the public and the media have become more skeptical of charities and the uses made of charitable donations. An article appeared this fall in The Republic, a ‘zine focused on Arizona and its economy. “Corporate Giving Tied to Branding, Image,” by Russ Wiles, questions the motives of businesses engaged in philanthropic efforts and concludes the net results do serve the corporations and the community. Wiles notes that customers like it [the charitable partnership], employees like it, and shareholders accept it as a cost of doing, and even expanding, business.” Wiles quotes CECP director, Carmen Perez, “It used to be that donations were directed to the favorite causes of the CEO,” she notes,” But now it’s more strategic, with the strategy often driven by what the business is good at.” Wiles concludes that customers support business-charity partnerships and valued employees are drawn to and retained by companies who engage in partnering with non-profits. Wiles predicts that these charity-business partnerships will increase with the growing influence of socially conscious Millennials.

Clearly, developing the right non-profit partnership is crucial. The right pairing can transform the brand perception of a business, by giving the business, the non-profit, and all their stakeholders an “emotional mission” which inspires action. Burtch reminds businesses that a successful cause marketing campaign is founded on three pillars:

• The emotional mission must be “embedded” in the campaign.

• The patrons or customers as well as the company’s management and employees must see the partnership as a long-term commitment by both the charity and the business.

• There must be transparency, primarily through communications of the campaign before, during, and after its completion.

The public must be reminded of what is achieved by their participation; what happened? Where did the money go?

The “glow” of an effective cause marketing campaign empowers everyone involved. There is a sense of reciprocity which can’t be achieved through a one-way, traditional corporate donation to a worthy cause. The business and the non-profit are “co-branding,” which requires a wise partnering match-up at the outset. Cause marketing consultant, Paul Jones warns that consumer skepticism is an issue. Finding a good fit between your business and your charity partner is crucial.

“This is not a time for business as usual. Now is the time to take full advantage of multi-benefit cross-sector partnerships fo-cused on the greater good. This is the new normal and its win-win.” - Bruce Burtch

In an article in Communications World Magazine, Bruce Burtch enumerates the primary considerations you need to keep in mind when selecting a charity for a cause marketing partnership. Those considerations are:

• Why do you want to undertake a non-profit partnership? Assess your business’s assets and abilities; consider a timeline for sustaining this commitment.

• What does your business have to offer? For example, brand recognition? Money? Employee volunteers as mentors or as workers?

• Which non-profits look like they might be a good fit? Research those charities through places like the Chamber of Commerce, or web sites like www.UniversalGiving.org or www.kickstart.org

• What does your non-profit partner want? What are its objectives for the partnership? For example, money, Pro bono services, in-kind donations of equipment, more media coverage.

• How will this partnership and the campaign we devise build and maintain “the glow”, the sense of working for the greater good?

A carefully planned and compelling cause marketing campaign, in which all parties are invested, serves all – the company, its shareholders and employees, business partners, customers, vendors, the non-profit

and the community it serves as well as the media that serves that community.

In Win-Win for the Greater Good, Bruce Burtch makes a strong case for cause marketing. “This is not a time for business

as usual. Now is the time to take full advantage of multi-benefit cross-sector partnerships focused on the greater good. This is the new normal and its win-win.” Success in business, as in life, offers opportunities as well as challenges.

Cake Cause Marketing

& Eats for Good

Where are you from originally and where do you live now?

I am originally from Olympia, Washington. I call Annapolis home but I’ve lived in Washington DC, Baltimore, Durham, NC, Dominican Republic, Spain and Argentina. I currently live in Riva Trace with my wife, Ely, and our miniature Schnauzer, Luna.

Where did you go to school/what did you study?I completed undergrad at Towson University where I studied finance and economics. I am currently finishing an MBA at Duke University with concentrations in strategy and marketing analytics.

Prior to starting Cake Cause Marketing, what type of work were you doing?Prior to Cake, I worked for the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office at the British Embassy in Washington DC. Concurrent to Cake, I started a fundraising website called Eats for Good, which rewards donors with deals at restaurants and retailers. We’ve launched over 100 Eats for Good campaigns so far and have helped to raise $10,000s.

What is Cake Cause Marketing and why did you start it?Cake Cause Marketing is a platform which allows businesses to create viral philanthropy campaigns. A business creates a branded page on the Cake platform and pledges a certain amount of money to a nonprofit. The nonprofit then shares the page with its fans and supporters via email and social media. Each visitor to the page who clicks, earns the nonprofit a percentage of the pledge amount. The business is able to include special offers and give-a-ways on the branded page. It’s a way for the business to support a nonprofit or good cause and get its product or service in front of a target audience. Its digital philanthropy with a marketing twist! Cake records a variety of metrics about

I make. Entrepreneurship is often equated to an iceberg. Onlookers only see what lies above the surface, they don’t know about the volume of time, energy and passion that has gone into a company – for better or worse. It’s a great feeling to have experienced the entire iceberg even if most people only see the product.

Productivity is exponential in a startup environment. When you work on something that you’re passionate about, an entire day’s worth of work goes by in the blink of an eye and you’ve accomplished so much. The reality of expenses also kick-in. Everything that you and your employees do costs money…your money, so naturally each dollar spent is scrutinized.

What is your ultimate vision/goal with your business(s)?My ultimate goal is to grow both Cake and Eats for Good into recognizable fundraising brands and then sell them. I enjoy my current work but, I am an entrepreneur after all. I have many other ideas that I would like to explore.

What has been your greatest business challenge to date?My greatest business challenge to date has been work-life balance. There are only 24 hours in a day and work isn’t everything. Family life can really suffer if you don’t relax and take time to be with loved ones.

During this time of “Giving and Gratitude,” what is for which you are most grateful?I am most grateful for my wife and family which have given me unlimited support and understanding!

the audience that engages with the branded page and shares the details with the business sponsor.

What other types of projects are you involved with – and in what capacity?I am the CEO – Chief Eats Organizer – of Eats for Good (www.eatsforgood.com), a fundraising website that rewards donors with deals and discounts at restaurants and area merchants. We’ve helped over 100 non-profits and good causes raise $10,000s since we launched on August 1st. We have also partnered with almost 200 restaurants and retailers in Washington DC, Annapolis, Baltimore and State College, PA to reward donors for their generosity. With Eats for Good and Cake, we’ve covered philanthropy from both the individual and corporate experiences respectively. As entrepreneurs we all have a big "why" that helps to keep us focused and driven. What is your big "Why." Creativity, Ownership & Productivity. As an entrepreneur, creativity is what keeps me going. Even after having launched Cake one year ago, most of what I do is still trial and error. Every day I think about how to craft my product into something that consumers need, want, and enjoy. The really challenging

part of the equation is communicating my product and positioning it in front of the right audience.

Ownership is awesome. Successes and failures are largely dependent on the decisions

So you and your daughter are in this business together? Is it difficult to separate the business from the personal relationship? No, we both bring different expertise and knowledge to the business, and ultimately have the same goals. We have worked together in the past in real estate as well as in child care.

What has been your greatest business challenge or biggest lesson to date? Renovating a property that was vacant for 3+ years, and also making a name for ourselves so not to carry on the stigma of the previous business at our location.

In this season of giving and gratitude, what is it for which you are most grateful? The overwhelming and unyielding support that we have received from the community.

Growing up, what career did you think you’d end up pursuing? Dental Hygiene.

What or who has had the most influence on you to become the person that you are today? My Parents.

Tell us about your business – the equestrian farm. What made you want to start this venture and what is your ultimate vision? My daughter Meaghan and I have been a part of the equestrian community for over 18 years and it’s a passion that we thoroughly enjoy. When we found this beautiful 67-acre horse farm, we knew that it was a project and business that we’d enjoy building together. Aside from the boarding and lessons aspect, we ultimately would love to run a therapeutic "Horses for Hero’s" program to help not only our wounded veterans but also EMS, Fire and Police.

Issue #3 Giving BizPeakeJournal.com 33

Where did you grow up? Go to School? And what did you want to be when you grew up, or a career you thought you’d

be pursuing? I was born in Camden, NJ, and grew up in that area. I went to public school through high-school. It was a lower to middle-income-area, and I wasn’t nurtured much in school, but always knew that I had to pursue the creative arts arena for my life’s work since the age of five!

Tell us a bit about your professional background. What were you doing prior to starting The JNP Project? My 25+ year career has been in the visual arts communications field: as a Corporate Director of graphic design and branding for a major casino/entertainment corporation, to a NYC Advertising Agency Associate Creative Director. I then developed my own international branding/design/advertising agency.

What is The JNP Project and how did it come about? The JNP Project™ (Jane Not Plain®) is

a self-esteem movement nurturing character, courage, and confidence (healthy

inner-awesome™ self-esteem) in all boys and girls (5-12+), while helping

them discover and make choices from their inner-

awesome superpowers!™

JNP’s lead product line is an adventure series of books: Jane

& Jake's Adventures to Awesome™. The adventure series of books (31

books in three series of ten, plus a prequel) consists of ten chapters

each with three alternative endings – Jane's, Jake's, and Oracle's (the magical fish). In each book, readers

are challenged to earn their Pearl of Power™ in one of ten core values: TRUTH, KINDNESS, HARMONY,

FORGIVENESS, GIVING, LOVE, DETERMINATION, COMPASSION, STRENGTH, and CHARACTER.

Each book's core value theme is supported by: songs, music, plush toys, Parent Activity Kits (ages 5-12), Educator Curriculum (grades 1-4), website interactive download activities, a kids' CIA (Club Inner Awesome) website subscription (with monthly downloads and an opportunity for kids to correspond directly with Jane & Jake), and JNP gear – all to support our mission that kids will believe in, and ultimately live by: I AM. I CAN. I WILL. EMPOWERED.™

JNP came about based on my difficult childhood experiences; bullying and an atmosphere of survival did not allow an opportunity for adult guidance educating me on how amazing I was, and what I could do with the understanding of making empowering choices. Out of a deep desire to give kids an opportunity to discover how amazing they each are from the inside out – discovering an inner-awesome superpower that we each have – I have taken my years of creative and business savvy to create and develop this amazing brand mission.

What is your ultimate goal and vision for JNP?1. To have interactive apps for kids 5-12+ that focus on the undersea

world of Awesome, and the adventures in discovering our inner-awesome superpowers.

2. Licensing options for character education programs.

Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.”

John F. Kennedy, January 20, 1961 Can we all agree that this was one of the great political lines of the Twentieth Cen-tury? It ranks right up there with Ronald Reagan’s “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

Well, if you substitute “community” for “country” in President Kennedy’s inaugu-ral address, you’ve got the makings of a dynamite public relations/marketing slogan as well. Giving back to the community in which you run your business just makes sense.

At my firm, Council Baradel, Kosmerl & Nolan, P.A., “community service” is one of our seven core values. It defines who we are. It’s part of our DNA. It keeps us from being too insular. It’s our firm’s “window” to the greater community in which we live and work.

Severn Savings Bank is another example of a local business that gives back as part of its business plan. As Alan Hyatt, Severn’s President and CEO will tell you:

“Our universe is Anne Arundel County. We reach out to all segments of the community, and we think it is appropriate to support our customers in any way we can.”

Raymond Crosby, President and CEO of Annapolis-based Crosby Marketing Communications, a leading marketing, advertising and public relations firm in the Baltimore-Washington region, agrees with that sense of responsibility. As he told me recently:

the firm as a result. Our commitment to supporting their efforts and contributing to their causes builds a sense of community in our firm. Our service projects have built a more positive attitude at Council Baradel than any “team building” exercise could ever do.

Does it add directly to the bottom line? That’s hard to tell. We’ve been a successful law firm in Annapolis for more than 30 years, so we like to think that our commu-nity involvement has something to do with our success. But we can’t point to any line item in the budget to demonstrate that.

We know this, though. Community service has raised our profile in the community and given us a positive image. Folks think kind-ly of us. It has built employee loyalty to our firm. Our lawyers and staff know that we value their efforts in the various com-munities in which they serve. This mutual respect makes it easier for us to function as a team. We work better. Our people feel good about themselves . . . and our firm.

We can trace all that directly to our com-mitment to this community. You can take that to the bank!

ABOUT RONALD A. BARADEL

In addition to his legal profession, Ron Baradel is extremely active in the community, currently as a member of the Board of Trustees of Indian Creek school and previously serving as President of the Rotary Club of Annapolis, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. Mary’s Schools, and a member of the Board of Directors of Hospice Cup, Inc., Anne Arundel County CASA and Wellness House of Annapolis. [email protected]

“Today’s consumers want to do business with organizations that align with their own personal beliefs and values. Companies that demonstrate an ongoing commitment to sup-porting the community and worthwhile causes can truly differentiate themselves, build brand loyalty, and win more market share.”

Some businesses adopt a particular cause like the environment, the Chesapeake Bay, or domestic violence, and concentrate their community service and charitable giving efforts in one or two of these areas. The company becomes identified with that cause in the eyes of the public.

At Council Baradel we do things a bit dif-ferently. We’re a diverse group of twenty-six attorneys. We represent many interests, dissimilar causes, and different passions. We encourage each of our attorneys to find a “community” outside our law firm and to become involved in that community whether it’s their homeowner’s association, the Chamber of Commerce, a bar associ-ation, the Rotary Club, their local PTA, Maryland Hall, the SPCA, their church or synagogue, Historic Annapolis, Wellness House of Annapolis, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Anne Arundel Medical Center, the Green Hornets, Hospice of the Ches-apeake, Anne Arundel County CASA, or anything else they feel strongly about. And we ask them not to just join, but to actually give back, to invest their time and talent in their community of choice, and to assume leadership roles in those communities.

This “giving back” idea started many years ago because we felt it was the “right thing” to do. But along the way, we’ve discovered a terrific, if unintended, collateral benefit. We support the efforts of our colleagues and staff by financially backing their organiza-tions. Their “causes” become our causes. Their “passions” become our passions.

Our attorneys grow as people. Community service brings balance to their lives. Our communities appreciate the firm’s contri-butions, and they become more invested in

Where are you from originally and where do you live now? I’m originally from Pittsburgh, PA, and

we now live in Maryland along the Eastern Shore.

Please share with us a bit of your professional background and how that eventually led you to start VisionWorkshops. Before I founded VisionWorkshops, I was working as a photographer with The New York Times and the International Red Cross. I got the idea to put the camera in the hands of the youth who were the subject of our photographs so that they could tell the story from their perspectives.

Could you please tell us more about VisionWorkshops and its mission? VisionWorkshops is the creative force behind a series of highly effective photography workshops for youth from under-served communities worldwide.

Our mission is to provide innovative, dynamic, educational and life changing experiences for youth, using the tools of photojournalism. Our goals are to give young people a voice, challenging them to see themselves and their communities in a new light; to encourage them to explore their world through the lens of a camera; and to share their perspectives with others through the publication and exhibition of their work.

VisionWorkshops provides programs free-of-charge to our students, through generous donations from the community, foundations, and corporate sponsors. Our workshops inspire youth with positive role models and with opportunities to display their photographs and writings at galleries from Annapolis, to Europe, to India, and the Middle East.

VisionWorkshops is a vibrant community for self-expression, self-respect, and respect for others.

Your work is so important, particularly in the world in which we are living today. With challenges such as trafficking and refugees, how is VisionWorks able to play a role in raising awareness of these issues and realities? My hope is that through this program, young people will have the opportunity to express their voice and to tell their own story. I often seek out projects that benefit young refugees and new arrivals to the U.S.A. Working with these kids is just where my heart is. I have seen over the years that the types of programs we do, and the photo workshop concept in general, can truly help a young person connect to his/her community, can make a positive impact on that person and community.

I remember a workshop we did with Burmese refugee teens in Baltimore. As one of the students watched the final multimedia piece they had produced (with their photos and audio of them speaking about their journey stories), this student said, “I feel so much more confident with my English now!” After hearing himself in the final video, that's what he got out of it. You never know exactly how what you're doing is going to help someone, you just have to have faith that it will and continue moving forward. I feel that the most powerful programs that we do involve work with young refugees or with students from different backgrounds, promoting cross-cultural understanding. I believe that so much of the violence in our world today is a result of lack of understanding of one another’s background and culture, and that education is the only way to stand up against that lack of understanding. VisionWorkshops uses the tools of photography, storytelling, and mentorship, to educate and empower young people. They’re our hope for the future, so that is where I will put my energy.

Volunteer Extraordinaire

Where do you live currently and where did you grow up?

I live in Gambrills in an active adult condo after two attempts at downsizing. I grew up in the Maryland, Prince Georges County suburbs of Washington D.C., where I was born 76 years ago. Started at University of MD in horticulture; spent too much time at the fraternity house; went to the Army 82 Airborne Division for some excitement jump-ing out of perfectly good airplanes; and then back to University of MD for a BS Business – Commerce Management degree.

What event or individual had the most impact on you growing up – or even in your adult years, that shaped who you are today? My grandmother, who was a Virginia mountain girl, would drag me along on her walks in the woods to pick wildflowers. After becoming “urbanized,” she still had a great garden. I remember trading a small bucket of weeds for: cookies, a fresh radish, young tender carrot, or snappy green onion.

Please tell us more about your work with The Spa Creek Conser-vancy. I first got involved in “conservation” when I was asked by the ARC of Anne Arundel County on Spa Road, to help them devel-op a grant for a MaryLandscapes as part of the Maryland year 2,000 celebration. My daughter was the HR Director and knew I was going crazy in my Lazy Boy. I had just retired with a heart disability and was bouncing off the walls. The application they were interested in was a sensory garden, although we had no clue on what that meant. The grant was successful; the only non-profit to get an award. This success led to a new concept for the developmentally disabled. The Sensory Garden’s purpose was to activate the five senses of: sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. Back then there were only two

want to be “associated” with a good cause. There are those who will help, but don’t want to lead.

What type of work were you in-volved with prior to working with the Conservancy?I have a background in the National Intelli-gence community where I served in foreign field operations, program development, and project management. Surviving 40+ years of geeky engineers and IT wizards prepared me well for world of the progressive tree huggers. My only real hobby over the years was flower gardening.

How can individuals and the com-munity be of the greatest support to you and the conservancy? www.spacreek.org We are in the process of updating the site but there is still plenty of great information available. We are always looking for officers, board members, and volunteers of all sorts.

In this season of Giving and Grat-itude, what is it for which you are most grateful? From an SCC perspective I am most grateful to our funders; most specifically the Chesa-peake Bay Trust (buy your heron plates) and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The Maryland Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bay Trust Fund also deserve a special call out for putting our tax dollars to excel-lent use.

I’m personally grateful for those who have survived the crusty old curmudgeon from hell, along with some family, friends, veter-ans, country, and God. I offer a big thank you to the old and new SCC volunteers, and most particularly our wonderful cross baring president of many years, Amy Clements.

in planning around the world; London Botanical and Chicago Botanical gardens – and they both were in the planning stages. So we wandered off on our own. The grant was for $24,000, but not being satisfied, we kept moving on a master plan that resulted in $120,000 in additional grants, donations, and sponsorships. From there I was recruit-ed to help bring the Chesapeake Children’s Museum (CCM) on line in an almost derelict building on Spa Creek. Along the way, I got interested in the creek restoration movement and programs like BayScapes. In my “spare” time, I got some grants from Chesapeake Bay Trust to do some rain gardens and shoreline restoration. Soon we were well beyond the CCM charter. So we decided to form Spa Creek Conservancy, Inc. in 2003, with some like-minded Annapolitans.

My general role has been program develop-ment and project management by identifying projects, putting together strategic plans, and getting stormwater best-management-practic-es into the ground, or creek. This is front to back: get the money, put together partner-ships, and make things happen. My usual talk to folks is, “stop your whining, and pick up a shovel.” I chose not to be an officer; I like to work in the field getting things done, not the “office” worrying about meetings, minutes, and treasurer reports.

Personally, I take great pride in being award-ed the distinguished 2004 Ellen Fraites Wag-ner Award from the Chesapeake Bay Trust. The award recognizes a Maryland citizen for his or her exceptional volunteer contributions to the protection and restoration of the Ches-apeake Bay and its rivers.

What has been your greatest challenge as part of a non-profit organization? The greatest challenge is finding volunteers who will lead and take responsibility. There are too many “resume” volunteers who just

We work tirelessly to make sure these Veterans have a support team behind them. Where are you from (now and growing up)? Born in Philadelphia and

raised in South Jersey. I am making my life with my family in Columbia, MD, which ironically is similar to the town I grew up in Willingboro, NJ.

Growing up, what or who had the greatest influence on your life. Made the biggest impact? My mother, Betty. She was, and still is, the nicest person I know. She taught me by living by example how to be a friend, how to care about people, to be kind, thoughtful and a sharer.

Tell us a bit about your business, Organized Solutions, and how it makes a difference in the lives of your clients.I am truly blessed to be living my dream –helping people change their lives mentally and physically through organization! I am a professional organizer, specializing in helping people who are excessively disorganized. I act as a coach, providing hands on guidance and help, working with individuals to ensure that the process of purging, organizing, and placing home and office items makes sense.

It is not just about clutter and purging. It's understanding how and why people do the things they do, have the habits that they have, and the best way to make the changes to live a better life. Understanding those things changes people’s whole perspective –and that's where I come in. Getting people organized in the way that works for them and having them be able to maintain the work that we do long after I'm gone.

Through conversation with passion, support and understanding, I find the needs and unique qualities of an individual, so each

n

want to not only give them hope, but be a part of their new life.

I know that you’re extremely involved with a number of non-profit organizations, could you please share which ones and in what capacity?I am a proud board member of the non-profit, Extra-Ordinary Birthdays. Extra-Ordinary Birthdays creates and provides themed birthday parties for homeless children living in shelters in the DMV area. Every human being’s birth should be celebrated. Children especially need to know that their life is of value and worthy of celebrating regardless of their circumstances. I cannot imagine living in a homeless shelter on my birthday or being a parent with a child who is having a birthday. EOB helps to bring one day of normalcy to the child and the parent and that brings me immense joy.

During this season of Giving and Gratitude, what is that you are most thankful for?I am humbled and grateful for the opportunities that I have had so far in helping people change their lives. I am so thankful that I have discovered what God has put me on this earth to do and grateful to be in the position to actually use my gifts and talents for good. I am thankful for my husband who is supporting me on this journey. I am grateful that I only have good people in my life, and so very thankful for the support that I receive from some very key friends. All of whom and encouraging and remind me of the good that I am doing and what a disservice it is for me to not tell people what I do. organization project is tailored to help the individual to be most efficient.

I serve people who are overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. Who can’t find what they need when they need it, who spend money on things that they already have. People who are generally disorganized, know that they have too much, who try to get organized but keep failing and are discouraged by their disorganization. And people who have difficulty discarding things and have an unhealthy amount of clutter.

What has been your greatest challenge as a business owner?Hands down: actually running a business – I don’t like it. I want to wake up every day and go help someone. I’m literally giddy with excitement when I am scheduled to work on a cluttered home. The greatest challenge is getting in the door to someone’s space. Its’ very personal and most people are embarrassed by their situations and uncomfortable being so vulnerable. Once I get in the door, it is my job to put them at ease and make them feel and know that it’s going to be ok. It’s not always easy for people to allow a stranger into their personal space and I don’t take that for granted. It’s a privilege.

What is your ultimate vision for your business (or non-profit)?In addition to the fun of organizing cabinets, pantries, and closets, I have a special place in my heart for people who have excessive clutter and are simply overwhelmed. I want to provide Organized Solutions to people who are paralyzed by their clutter but have a commitment to changing their lives. I would like to start a non-profit group that supports people who are hoarders. Everyone who has clutter is not a hoarder, however hoarders need a special kind of compassion, and I
