DescriptionThis module is an introduction to research methods and the principles of data summary

and presentation. It is designed to provide students with the fundamental skills required toread and understand scientific and academic literature. It also provides the basic skills

required to collect, analyze, summaries and present quantitative and qualitative data.

    Learning Outcomes:

    i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module, students should be able to:a) explain the different stages in a research project,

    b) describe the various approaches to research,

    c) define different types of data,d) outline the distinction between qualitative and quantitative approaches to research,e) summarize the principles of user-centered design and human-computer interaction,

    f) appreciate the professional and ethical responsibilities in conducting research,

    g) provide an outline proposal for the design of a small research project.

    ii. Skills

Application of numerical techniques: apply basic descriptive and inferential statistics to

simple data sets, and report these. Critical Review: be able to critically review researchpapers and a body of research literature. Problem Solving: evaluate the quality of a

research report, and design research to address a variety of research problems. Working

with others: process and communicate technical data in an academic manner through

    written presentation.

    ContentThe module content includes:
