SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE
Three quarters of school is in the books, and the final quarter of school is upon us. The fourth quarter brings with it better weather, field trips, testing, and culminates with graduation. As the school year presses through the final quarter, it is important that students strive to finish strong and better themselves with each day.
Hopefully, many of you were able to attend this year’s musical, Footloose, directed by Dane Christensen. The annual musical is unique to Central City Public Schools and is an impressive display of our talented students and the community support of the fine arts. The talent that ex-ists here is simply amazing, and Mr. Christensen does an excellent job of getting the very best out of that talent. Every time I step into the Performing Arts Center, I cannot help but think about the remarkable facility our district has to showcase our talent.
Our district has continued our tradition of excellence in creating tremendous science fair pro-jects. At the recent Central Nebraska Regional Science Fair in Hastings, Central City qualified five individuals for the state competition. These five students will have the opportunity to qual-ify for the National Science Fair Competition. Mrs. Chelle Gillan works a tremendous number of hours with our young people preparing them for these showcase events.
A big acknowledgement should also go out to Ms. Stephanie Shearer and her leadership with the Speech Program. Ten students recently qualified for the State Speech Meet with both Oral Interpretation of Drama teams qualifying. Countless hours have gone into preparing our stu-dents, over the past few months, for their speech competitions this season.
Many great accomplishments are taking place on a daily basis in our district. We are blessed to have many very talented students that work hard and make a commitment to their future. We are also blessed to have great family and community support. Thank you for entrusting us in the development of the youth in this community. Go Bison!!!

Looking Beyond the Numbers
Having a love for math, I enjoyed the movie Hidden Figures. In the movie, the computers
(math calculators) are going to be replaced with computers. Because the computer can calcu-
late so much faster, the women in the movie had to respond by applying their knowledge and
problem solving skills to other areas. The point of me bringing this up is that math is all about
problem solving and critical thinking thinking, more than it is about memorizing a method to find
X. The future our kids will be living in will evolve exponentially and they have to be prepared for
the challenge that continuous change will bring to them and the workforce.
This year the teachers at Central City Public Schools have been taking a strong look at our
math program and the future for our kids. We want to equip our students with the skills to
become successful in whatever career they pursue. We want our students to become problem
solvers that can view problems from multiple angles and perspects. They will also be in a work-
force that values collaboration and teamwork. In previous articles, I have talked about a growth
mindset, character that fosters understanding for one another, and perseverance. All of this
points us to a math program that can prepare our students for the future demands that will be
placed on them. What this means for you and your child is that the classroom will look different
than it did for you and that math will be closely related real world problem, with a strong
emphasis on critical thinking, problem solving, and multiple ways of solving problems.
As we decide on a program that meets the above expectations and needs, it might
mean that there will be a period of adjustment. This adjustment should be meet with persever-
ance and a growth mindset. What I know is that our students deserve it and we have amazing
teachers who can help make things happen for our children. Thank you for sharing your kids with
us!

The students had brought containers of
various sizes (cereal boxes etc) then we
measured and computed surface area
and volume. A great hands-on activity.

ACT for Juniors Please note that Juniors in Nebraska will be taking the ACT for free during school hours this
spring. This is a wonderful opportunity for Juniors who hope to go onto a community college or four year college in the future. The ACT will replace the NeSA Test for the Juniors across the state.
Juniors at CCHS will take the ACT at CCHS on Tuesday, April 25th
. If a Junior does not test on April 25th, the student will be required to make-up the test on another school day. Juniors who wish to, can also take the Saturday April 8
th ACT.
All ACT Tests are somewhat different from each other. Colleges suggest that college-bound students take the ACT/SAT three to four times before second semester of their senior year for admission and scholarship purposes. Our teachers are currently working with our juniors to prepare them to take the ACT.
Successful 2nd Annual DECA Interview Night
By Colton Drage
On Tuesday, February 28th, there was a night of mock interviews held in Central City High School. Nine
DECA members and nine interviews, volunteers from the community, went head to head for two rounds
of mock interviews, each about 25 minutes long. One of the interviewers was Nathan Perry, President of
Pinnacle Bank. He said, "It is a great experience for the kids to get a couple of interviews under their
belts. Any tips they can pick up now will be helpful for them in the future." One of the DECA members
from CCHS, Ethan Nelson, says he gained experience from the interviews. He believes DECA Interview
Night will set him apart from other applicants for jobs and other positions in the future.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s Superman (or Woman)!!
Children of all ages were treated to a night of Superhero stories and activities (led by our awesome staff!) the even-ing of February 28th, 2017 at the elementary school. Over 150 children (400+ counting parents and staff) attended the school’s annual Family Literacy Night, which included stories like “Superhero School”, “Real Heroes Don’t Wear Capes”, “Just a Daydream”, and “Incredible Me!” Students could show how they were incredible, make a “superpower” bracelet, a mask, or a puppet. They also had an opportunity to show their superpowers in a Superhero themed photo booth (created by our own PTO!).
Our superb high school Advanced Leadership class (led by Mr. Reub Burbach) also showcased their superpowers by mingling with the students throughout the evening. So thankful for these role models! Our PTO did a fantastic job decorating for the event, as well as organizing items for a raffle. One boy and one girl from each grade level were the recipients of these items. Special thanks to the donors: Jim’s Foods, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen, True Value, City of Central City Aquatic Center, Widman Cinema, Carlos O’Kelly’s, Westside Lanes, and our own PTO! A very special thank you to our elementary teachers and staff who worked very hard to make this event a success!!

CCHS Sophomores Tour Colleges
Through the support of the Education Quest
Foundation College Access Grant, Central City High School
arranged for our 10th grade students to tour Central
Community College in Hastings and the University of Nebras-
ka in Kearney on February 28th. It turned out to be a
worthwhile experience for the students and should help them
to think more about their opportunities after high school.
Our group arrived at Central Community College in
Hastings in the morning. We were given a large group
presentation about the college. We completed a walking
tour that showcased a number of their popular programs of
study. We then went to the University of Nebraska in
Kearney. There the students ate lunch at the Memorial
Student Union cafeteria. We were treated to information
about UNK from their admissions personnel and a panel
discussion by current UNK students. We toured the campus
with UNK student representatives. While visiting there, we
were able to have some fun visiting with a number of current
UNK students who had recently graduated from CCHS!
CCHS Alumni Katie Benner even greeted us with a short
presentation for Admissions!
The students and adults alike seemed pleased with
the experience. We would like to take this opportunity to
thank the officials and students of Central Community
College and the University of Nebraska in Kearney for their
wonderful hospitality. We would especially like to thank the
adults who came along to enjoy the day and supervise our
students. Our sponsors for the trip were Matt Shrader and
Jessie Flodman. The trip was organized and supervised by
Counselor Debra Anderson.
Juniors visit UNL and SCC
Our group of forty-eight toured Southeast Communi-
ty College and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln on
March 1st. The tours were a free service provided through
Education Quest and our College Access Grant and were
supervised and organized by Counselor Debra Anderson.
The Juniors were first greeted by a nice welcome at
Southeast Community College. They then toured some of the
departments and were treated with a beverage. We next
went to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and enjoyed
lunch in the college cafeteria. We were greeted with a warm
welcome and informed about the education one can receive
from the university. Our students walked all around campus
and heard about campus highlights from our student tour
guides.
Overall our students really enjoyed getting a taste of
campus life, being able to walk through the various buildings,
and interacting with current college students. We were
entertained by some friendly squirrels plus we were greeted
by some past CCHS graduates. Many thanks go out to the
personnel and students at Southeast Community College and
the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, and also to Dane
Christensen, Tina Morris, Amy and Corey Franzen for
sponsoring the tour!
