History
Bishopswood Golf Course first opened for play in April 1976. It was the
brainchild of George Blake and Mike Phillips, who saw the need in Tadley for
some kind of sporting amenity. As golfers themselves, they decided to design
and build a 9-hole golf course from 70 acres of scrub and woodland.
With the able assistance of one talented greenkeeper, the course was even-
tually completed and open for play. Originally operating from temporary ac-
commodation, the business initially thrived to enable a Clubhouse to be built.
Following its inception, Bishopswood has become recognised as providing an
essential contribution to sporting, recreational and leisure activities, therefore,
giving great benefits to the residents of the Tadley area and beyond.
Since its opening, the course has undergone many improvements. To ensure
that Bishopswood golf course continues to be recognised as a quality golf
resort, we have incorporated new drainage, re modelling of hazards and
investment in new products and equipment.
Improvements were made to the Pro Shop, changing facilities, function room
and restaurant, with a new balcony bar, conference and meeting rooms
further enhancing our facilities.

About the Course
Bishopswood Golf Course provides nine superb holes of golf and when
played twice offers a significant challenge, 6,474 yards in length, playing to
a par of 72.
It is situated on the Hampshire-Berkshire border and is carved through
the natural woodland and meandering water hazards that all add to the
Bishopswood experience.
Rated by Today’s Golfer as “One of the best 9 hole courses in the South”,
Bishopswood’s tree-lined fairways and superb greens represent a suitable
challenge for all standards.
It offers a stern test to the low handicap player but also a chance for up-and-
coming players to experience all aspects of the golf environment. With trees
to contend with, anyone missing a fairway here will do well to make a par,
even on the shorter holes.
One of the most memorable holes is the 5th, which is a testing par 3 over
water to a well-guarded green with a backdrop of established trees. It is a
delight to play, even more so if you walk to the sixth tee after recording a par
on your scorecard.

Course Guide
If you have never played at Bishopswood Golf Course before you are in for a
treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie
in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.
Hole 1, 175 yards, par 3
With out of bounds to the left and a newly created water hazard in front
of the tee an accurate tee shot is required. When approaching the green,
beware the large bunker on the right-hand side.
Hole 2, 438 yards, par 4
A difficult dog leg par four with a need for accuracy from the tee shot. When
hitting to the green, be careful to avoid the large lake and ditch that await any
mis-hit shot as well as the bunkers surrounding the green.
Hole 3, 516 yards, par 5
After negotiating the hazard that runs in front of the tee, stay central as the
undulating fairway can easily carry your ball into
the rough. When approaching the green make sure to hit the ball long, as
any under-hit shot will be collected by the bunker at the front.
Hole 4, 420 yards, par 4
The hardest hole on the course and Stroke Index 1 for good reason. With
copses to the left and right-hand side of the fairway, this tee shot requires a
long and straight drive. Its narrow, well-bunkered green makes this a difficult
hole to make par.
www.bishopswoodgc.co.uk | 11
Hole 5, 134 yards, par 3
This picturesque par three is tough to negotiate. Accuracy and club selection
is paramount, as the green is surrounded by water and bunkers.
Hole 6, 517 yards, par 5
Longer hitters should beware the ditch that runs across the fairway, while
the second shot should be played to a central position to allow a relatively
straight forward shot to the well guarded raised green.
Hole 7, 423 yards, par 4
One of the hardest driving holes on the course, its narrow fairway and out
of bounds alongside the water hazard means your tee shot needs to be hit
straight. Beware the bunkers on the left and right-hand side of the green.
Hole 8, 284 yards, par 4
A short par four with trees on either side exiting the teeing ground makes the
drive difficult. Should you be able to shape the ball right to left, it is possible
to hit this green. The green, however, sits only feet from the out of bounds
with bunkers on either side.
Hole 9, 330 yards, par 4
A picturesque short par four over a lake makes this a wonderful hole to
finish on. After negotiating the lake, an undulating green surrounded by
bunkers and a newly created water hazard waits, making par here always
well received.

The Professional and the Pro Shop
The PGA Professionals at Bishopswood are Ben Newman and Steve
Ward. Steve has has become a very popular and well-respected figure
with our members since joining us more than 20 years ago from Ryde on
the Isle of Wight.
Ben Newman runs the Pro Shop located inside our fine clubhouse. Here
you will find a wide range of golf clubs, accessories and apparel. Major
brands in stock include Adidas, Glenmuir, Ashworth and TaylorMade to
name but a few.
Steve and Ben are happy to help offer expertise and advice on what is right
for you and to ensure that you receive great value. Nowhere is this more
apparent than in club selection. We do not believe in selling clubs that are
not suited to an individual’s game and encourage visitors to our Pro Shop
to explore custom fitting.
We are an official fitting centre for TaylorMade, which means that golfers
undergo a series of brief swing measurements and end up with a set of
clubs purpose-built for them rather than an ill-fitting set straight off the
shelf. The result should be better struck shots and fewer of them.
The Pro Shop is open from 8am-9pm on weekdays and from 7am-8pm
on weekends.
If you would like to contact Ben or Steve about any of the golf opportunities
at Bishopswood please contact him on [email protected] or
01189 408601.

Tuition
Steve Ward, our vastly experienced PGA teaching professional at Bishop-
swood, is on hand to provide guidance on all areas of the golfing game.
From driving accuracy to the all-important scoring areas of pitching,
chipping and putting and from escaping from bunkers consistently to the
mental side of the game, Steve has it covered. He is here to help and can
offer advice to:
• Beginners, who are supplied with the foundations on which to build a
fundamentally sound golf game.
• Improvers looking to lower their scores and turn problem areas into parts
of their game they can rely upon, eliminating weaknesses and turning
them into strengths.
• Already proficient players who are wanting to take their game to the
next level.
www.bishopswoodgc.co.uk | 15
If you are at a loss to see why your scorecard looks the way it does after
a round, there is also the opportunity to book an on-course lesson where
you can improve your course management skills and tighten up your game.
Golf is a sporting passion that can last a lifetime and the earlier you take
it up the easier it is and the better you can be. Youngsters are a big part
of golf at Bishopswood and Steve and his team have developed a very
successful Junior Academy, with the Golfmark accreditation.
He is happy to host golfing clinics to groups or societies before they take
to the course.
If you would like to contact Steve about any of the golf opportunities at
Bishopswood please contact him on [email protected] or call
01189 408601.

Custom Fitting
There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition
ought to go hand-inhand with equipment that allows each player to make
the utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess.
Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but
unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes.
The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but
still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing.
This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that
allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual
physique and swing characteristics.
Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Bishopswood
and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of
products all available for custom fitting.
This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic
improvement in ball striking.
Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same
fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for
the average golfer to do likewise.
Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their
physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the
correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to
the correct impact position and better scores.

The Clubhouse
The spectacular new-look clubhouse that reopened in May 2011 has put
Bishopswood firmly on the golfing map. The building was totally rebuilt
from the inside with one purpose in mind – to make it as pleasant and as
userfriendly for our customers as it could possibly be.
The result is, in a word, stunning. Needless to say, the comments from
our members have been nothing but complimentary and all the team at
Bishopswood are rightly proud of their plush new home, so much so that
some have been tempted to stay after their day’s work is done!
But don’t take our word for it, come see for yourself. Come and play a casual
nine holes, admire the locker rooms, grab a shower and then relax in the
comfort of the bar with a refreshing drink.
Consider sampling a meal to remember in the new Sands Restaurant, or if
you have less time to spare, grab a tasty bite to eat in our bar, which is open
daily from 10am and serves food from 11am.
Bishopswood is not just for golfers, it is for everyone, and the bar and
restaurant are open to non-members. We feel once you find us you will be
impressed and inspired and find numerous reasons to return and ways to
make use of a truly wonderful facility.

Functions
Here at Bishopswood we want to dispel the preconceived notion that golf
clubs are stuffy, old-fashioned places that are unwelcoming to anyone aside
from their members.
We are a lively, forward-thinking golf courseand have invested heavily in
creating a purpose-built facility that is comparable to any other in the county
or beyond. Nothing would make us happier than welcoming our non-golfing
neighbours and turning them into friends who view their local golf courseas
a community facility.
If you are planning a special occasion such as a notable birthday or
retirement party, pay us a visit and see what Bishopswood has to offer.
We now have two function rooms that will cater for most occasions, be those
Christmas, New Year or birthday parties, wakes, christenings or weddings.
The Amcrest Suite downstairs can hold up to 120 for seated dinner and this
spacious room also has a built-in dance floor and bar.
The function room upstairs is called the Oak Room. It seats 24 and its
intimate atmosphere makes it perfect for smaller parties and private dining.
Next to the Sands Restaurant, it can act as overflow for the restaurant and
is very versatile room.

Ask any marketing expert.Amberwood formed when their good andlong-standing friend decided to close Allstyle. The business has now almost completedit’s 3rd year, is very busy and has lots ofevidence of glowing compliments from it’scustomers. To start a business in a recessionyear followed by a year of deeper recessionrequires foresight and optimism. Maybe theforesight comes from spending over thirtyyears in the home improvement industrywhere both Roy and Dermot, themselves, manufactured and installed windows, doorsand conservatories. It gave them so muchexperience that to choose the very bestproducts, suppliers and installers wasrelatively easy. But how could they be surethat the orders would be forthcoming whenmany other businesses were struggling. Thisis where the optimism came in but it waslaced with the knowledge of experience thatDermot and Roy had gained.
A good team was essential. Roy and Dermotchose trustworthy suppliers, not the lowest prices, but those who had
reliable quality. They chose a good bank witha good business manager at LloydsTSB. Theinstallers not only had to be expert in theirwork but also had to be friendly and respectcustomer’s requirements.
They also had a good plan based onknowledge, hard work and a desire to bethe best home improvement company in thearea. They agreed that while dealing withhomeowners was to be their core business, opening a Trade Counter for local builderswas also important. Every week local tradespeople visit the Trade Counter for pvc trim, fascia boards, window boards and guttering.Being in close proximity to AWE has helpedbecause not only does it supports thousandsof employees who are all potential customersbut AWE has also become a customer.
They asked themselves, ‘ Why do customersplace orders with a particular company?’
Most customers are very experienced buyersof houses, furniture, clothes, food, cars and many other things? Surelymost people don’t buy things because ofprice, or because of a good brochure, or agood showroom?
They figured that people buy from a company
where they like the people representing acompany. People buy because they heargood things about a company. Customers buybecause they believe what people from thecompany tell them. They believe their advice. They trust them.
Being successful over these three yearswas easier than it could have been becauseRoy and Dermot just did things that camenaturally. If someone needed an extensionrather than a conservatory, they advised themof that, even if it meant losing an enquiry. Ifsomeone’s windows just needed refurbishingrather than replacing, they advised themaccordingly. If someone was choosing aconservatory to use as a dining room forinstance, they wouldn’t allow double glazingthat allows expensive heat to warm theoutside air, they recommended the very bestenergy-efficient glazing even though it mightbe a little more expensive.
If someone was replacing their doors becausethey were worried about security, it wouldbe wrong to advise a low-priced panel doorwhen the recommendation should be a moreexpensive composite door that is resistantto a large boot. It goes on and on.
So, if you want good honest advice without
pressure call Dermot or Roy at Amberwood
because it will be one of them who will be out
to visit you, not a salesman.
Dermot’s professional tip of the month is:
‘’ Even if you have a very solid front door
with secure multi-point locking a burglar will
bypass the security
in seconds if you don’t lock the door from the
inside and remove the key’’.
Roy’s tip of the month is: ‘’ If you have a room
or conservatory that is too cold in the winter
it may be because your old glazing is not
efficient. By replacing
just your double-glazed units for new
soft-coat, argon gas-filled ones you
could save 66% of the heat loss’’.
Oh, and if you builders and DIY-ers out there
want supply-only windows, doors, fascias,
guttering, trims and conservatories....
our Trade Counter is open on the Tadley to
Aldermaston Road, Monday to Friday.
And the coffee, tea and biscuits are free.

Corporate Facilities
Our attention to detail along with flexible facilities ensures that we provide
a sought-after venue for that product launch, team-building day or strategy
meeting and this is very much what Corporate Bishopswood represents.
Our well-appointed clubhouse has enabled us to offer outstanding facilities
that are as good as any in the locality.
We have two air-conditioned meeting rooms, including a 120- seat function
room with private facilities available for hire. We will provide all the necessary
equipment in order to ensure the day runs smoothly and professionally and
our attentive staff will be on hand to address any additional needs.
Rooms are available to hire for either a day or half day and we offer very
reasonable delegate rates that include tea/coffee and biscuits together with
a buffet lunch.
We are looking to expand the corporate side of the operation at Bishopswood,
we feel we have a venue to be proud of and are confident local businesses
will feel the same way once they have discovered what we have to offer.
The golf courseis always open to new ideas and would be happy to tailor a
package to your individual needs. Corporate memberships can embrace the
best of both worlds, using our clubhouse facilities and offering the chance to
play golf on our highly-regarded course.
For more details contact the Events Coordinator on 01189 408600 or e-mail

Members’ Golf
Golfers at Bishopswood are never short of company or competition. The golf
coursehas a host of events available to enter and plays frequent matches
against its neighbours both in friendlies and league encounters.
In keeping with the golf course’s general ethos, we are proud to be all-inclusive
on the golfing front as well. Ladies compete on an equal footing with their male
counterparts in many medal competitions, which is one of the delights of our
sport’s handicap system.
Men
The men play in very sociable inter-club matches, which normally take place
on Saturdays, involve a lot of banter, some fine golf and a meal afterwards.
The golf courseplays in many friendlies, both men and mixed, while there are
also men’s and mixed knockout competitions running throughout the summer.
While there is a keen focus on competitive golf – and a likely contributory factor
as to why we have competed so well in the team competitions – balance is
always a good thing.
We provide regular social golf where the only thing on offer is renewing
friendships and perhaps a drink in the bar afterwards for the winner.
Success is celebrated at the annual dinner, at which bragging rights are gained,
golfing anecdotes and conquests are relived and trophies are polished.
www.bishopswoodgc.co.uk | 41
Seniors
The golf course has a very lively bunch of Veteran or Senior golfers consisting
of playing and non-playing members but with room for more.
The Seniors have informal roll-ups on Wednesdays and Fridays as well as
a monthly medal. TheSenior Stablefords begin in early March and there are
inter-club matches with other local golf courses throughout the season.

Practice Facilities
Bishopswood has outstanding practice facilities for those people looking to
take up the game or work on areas that are proving problematic.

whatever the weather. The range is also floodlit, offering the opportunity to
pop down after a busy day at work, so come and see us and discover that
hitting golf balls can be a great stress reliever.
The more intricate parts of the game are not overlooked, with a fine practice
putting green near the clubhouse and a practice bunker near the range to
help perfect those satisfying sand saves.
The 12-bay range is open to both members and non-members seven days
a week.
Opening times are:
Mondays: 8am - 8pm
Tuesdays-Fridays: 8am - 9pm
Weekends: 7.30am - 6pm
Timings are subject to weather and maintenance and the range may be
closed on Monday mornings for grass cutting as required.
Tokens for buckets of balls are available to buy from the Pro Shop, with
attractive discounts on offer for members and also to those who buy
several tokens at one time. The last 30-ball bucket is available 20 minutes
