As well as providing a space for staff, students and local partners to come together and showcase local services, skills and knowledge, there will be plenty of Free Family-Friendly activities to choose from.

Fancy trying your hand at screen-printing or samba drumming? Join one of our arts and craFts WorkshoPs which are available throughout the day, free of charge, no booking required. Feeling a bit more energetic? Why not try one of our sPorts and Fitness tasters – from beginners netball, football and dodgeball to soca aerobics, Zumba and yoga.

Join us in celebrating the local history of the area in our exhibition documenting some of the changes to Hulme and Moss Side over the years. The exhibition includes talks from guest speakers, films from the North West Film Archive, and involves partners from Alexandra Park Heritage Trust, Hulme History Society, Reel Mcr, Birley High School and the Youth Charter Trust. There will also be a guided history walk of the local area. The final day of a three day conference commemorating the 70th anniversary of the 5th Pan African Congress will also be a highlight of the programme.

We are celebrating local talent with Legacy 90.1FM and other community partners, so find a comfy spot on the Spanish Steps and watch some great PerFormances throughout the day.

We are celebrating Hulme history from archaeological digs to more recent times, described and captured by the residents of Hulme and Moss Side – old and new.

The exhibition includes images and artefacts, objects and stories, alongside a programme of talks by guest speakers on their experiences and memories of Hulme and Moss Side and films about the area from the North West Film Archive, BBC Archives and local collections.

Meet members of the Hulme History Society and share you memories of Hulme, tell us about the streets where you grew up, or the number 53 bus. Remember your old school? Take a look at the display of images and artefacts from Birley High School.

View artefacts and images from the community archaeological digs at Barracks Park and Birley and explore new ways to interpret the finds through creative activities led by Manchester School of Art students.

The whole exhibition invites participation. Come and help us piece together more of the story, tell us about the items in the exhibition and share your own experiences.

This exhibition highlights key history projects, community groups and archives from this remarkable area of Manchester, from Hulme’s early origins as a medieval farmstead, through its many transitions and changes.

local history exhibitionFirst Floor, all day

11am and 2pma Practical FaithFilm: lecture theatre 1A Practical Faith tells the story of the work of Reverend Mike Taylor, a United Reform minister in Hulme whose community work and dedication to local people made him a much loved figure in the area. A window onto Reverend Taylor’s life, the documentary shows him visiting the sick and elderly, organising youth events and sports, counselling and preaching on a Sunday. The film includes footage of The Crescents and deck access flats.

11.30am and 2.30pm moving memories: tales From hulme and moss sideFilm: lecture theatre 1Using contemporary interviews and BBC archive material, local people reminisce about arriving, growing up and living in Hulme and Moss Side in the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Includes scenes at Webster Street Primary School, The Crescents, the Nile Club and of the infamous riots.

11.45amsPort – Past, Present and Futuretalk: lecture theatre 2What is the future of sport and sporting legacy in Hulme and Moss Side? Who were and are the local sporting heroes and how do we build on the successes of the past and present at national and international level? Talks by Geoff Thompson, Youth Charter and Pete Bradshaw, Manchester City Football Club.

12pm and 3pma tale oF black Families Film: lecture theatre 1A Tale of Black Families is taken from the BBC’s 1972 series ‘This is Our England’. The 30 minute film explores the themes of immigration, racial discrimination and education with a focus on Moss Side and inner-city Manchester.

12.30pmliFe in hulme: 1970s-1990slecture theatre 2Two former residents of Hulme’s deck access flats speak of their experiences of life in Hulme and the community they lived and grew up in. They explore what it means to live in Hulme and popular myths and preconceptions.

Alongside the local history exhibition which is open throughout the day, you can check out a series of films and talks by local partners celebrating the people and places of Hulme and Moss Side.

2.15pm memories oF birley hightalk: lecture theatre 2Birley High School provided a wide-ranging comprehensive education for 11-18 year old students from 1967 to 1990. Birley High School was both wonderful and challenging, it was a family that valued education and learning alongside pastoral care, community and charitable giving. It excelled in music and sport, arts and technology. The talk will explore memories of Birley High from the perspective of a student and a teacher. Other former students will be available to meet informally too.

3pmmemories oF hulme and moss sidetalk: lecture theatre 2Local people share their memories of their school days, shopping trips, local characters and local haunts during the 1960s and 1970s. What was life like for the different communities of Hulme and Moss Side? This talk is a natural conclusion to the day and the local history exhibition.

In this dynamic workshop in partnership with Z-arts and led by professional musician Zac, you’ll learn not just how much fun samba drumming is, but also that working as a team with your fellow drummers produces an amazing sound. Suitable for all the family and amazing fun!

12pm – 1pm keem youth shout outdrama studioTeam KYSO will provide a music workshop based on lyric writing, performance and confidence building. The workshop will build towards a short performance on the main stage at the end of the day.

circus ZaPParelliPublic realmThe brilliant Circus Zapparelli will be running a range of fun circus skills activities. Come and try your hand at plate-spinning, juggling and monster feet.

sPorts and Fitness tastersall sPorts activities Will take Place in the multi-use hall, unless otherWise stated

Community partners have come together to offer a range of sports and fitness tasters. All you need is suitable footwear and clothes you would be comfortable to do activity in.

Taster sessions involve the basics of each sport and playing small games that can incorporate different abilities and age groups. The emphasis is on having fun! So if you’ve ever fancied having a go at dodgeball, finding out about soca aerobics, or want to brush up on your netball and football skills, this is the perfect opportunity to try!

11amFootball Session led by Manchester City Football Club’s City in the Community. All ages welcome.

12pmdodgeballLocal club Manchester Bees are always looking for new players - from the men’s first team (ranked 5th nationally) to social players and numerous beginners. No matter what level you’re at, come and get involved!

1pmtaekWondoCome and try out a taster session in Taekwondo. If you are unsure if Taekwondo is for you this is a great way to find out! Learn and take part in a free session and see current members showcasing their moves.

3pmsoca aerobicsUniversal Connection brings you a fun Soca aerobics dance fitness workout inspired by the vibrancy and energy of Soca and Calypso music.

3.30pmZumbaA latin inspired dance fitness class suitable for all levels. It is a funky, fun, high energy fitness session.

✹   age aloud an intergenerational choir from Will Griffiths Court in Moss Side will be singing. They will also perform ‘Hidden Voices’ a poem exploring the day-to-day lives, views and experiences of Hulme’s older residents.

Find yourself a spot on the Spanish Steps to relax and enjoy the performances throughout the day. If you fancy getting involved yourself, drop into the Team KYSO workshop in the Drama Studio at 12pm and work on the closing performance of the day.

Hot off the heels of the brilliant Manchester’s Got Talent Part II, the Birley Community Day is pleased to provide another platform for local talent to shine.

The talent showcase will be hosted by akeim mundell alongside legacy 90.1Fm, with dJ devo & Pic creW.

Look out for our partners from Moss Side Fire Station and Greater Manchester Police who will be joining us on the day with a variety of emergency vehicles and mascots.

And talking of exploring we have guided tours on and off campus for those interested in sustainability and local history. All tours will meet in the Brooks Building reception area.

metrolinkThe nearest mainline tram stop is at Deansgate-Castlefield, approximately 10 minutes’ walk from Brooks.

Please note: the stairway down from Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink Station is currently closed for refurbishment. Please use the footbridge across to Deansgate railway station and use the stairway on the left to exit onto Whitworth Street West.

The MSCP does not have a postcode but for those using ‘Sat Navs’ the nearest address is: M15 5RN.

Access to different floors of the MSCP will be via the stairs/lifts, please do not use the internal ramp which is for car use only.
