    Please read all instructions before beginning.

    Pre-washing recommended for hand-dyes ONLY. Pre-washing NOT recommended for panel and textures.

    Yardages and Cutting WOF is 42" width of fabric from selvedge edge to selvedge edge.

    Remove as little fabric as possible when trimming selvedges and squaring strip ends.

    1 Birds in the Garden panel • Trim panel to 33 1/2" wide x 42 1/2" tall, centering

    the image.

    1 yard Bright Birds print

    1 yard Hummingbirds print • From each fabric, fussy cut (11) 6 7/8” squares

    similar to the image below shown, centering a bird

    in each square.

    6 7/8” square, cut on point

    3/4 yard sapphire tonal print • 4 strips 2" x WOF; trim to (2) 2" x 42 1/2” and

    (2) 2” x 36 1/2" strips for panel framing.

    • 7 strips 2" x WOF for outer borders

    3/4 yard green tonal hand-dye • 7 strips 2 1/4" x WOF for binding.

    3/4 yard light blue hand-dye • 3 strips 5 3/8" x WOF; cut into (20) 5 3/8” squares;

    cut each square in half diagonally once to make (40) 5

    3/8” triangles.

    3/4 yard lavender hand-dye • 4 strips 5 3/8" x WOF; cut into (24) 5 3/8” squares;

    cut each square in half diagonally once to make (48) 5

    3/8” triangles.

    4 yards of 42" backing fabric • 2 strips 72" x WOF

    OR

    2 yards wide backing fabric • 1 piece 72" x 82"

    Batting • 1 piece 72" x 82"

    Piecing the Blocks Use a 1/4" seam allowance for all stitching. Press seams as directed.

    1. Top Corner Blocks: Sew (3) lavender triangles and (1) light blue triangle to the four sides of a Bright Bird 6 7/8” square as shown to make the top left corner block. Press seams toward the square. Repeat, shifting the light

    blue triangle as shown to make the top right corner block. Label and set aside.

    2. Bottom Corner Blocks: Sew (3) lavender triangles and (1) light blue triangle to the four sides of a Hummingbird 6 7/8” square as shown to make the bottom left corner block. Press seams toward the square. Repeat,

    shifting the light blue triangle as shown to make the bottom right corner block. Label and set aside.

    3. Sew (2) lavender triangles and (2) light blue triangles to the four sides of (2) each Bright Bird and Hummingbird 6 7/8” squares, as shown to make the left side border blocks. Press seams toward the square. Label

    and set aside.

    4. Sew (2) lavender triangles and (2) light blue triangles to the four sides of (2) each Bright Bird and Hummingbird 6 7/8” squares, as shown to make the right side border blocks. Press seams toward the square. Label

    and set aside.

    Right Side Border Blocks

    5. Sew (2) lavender triangles and (2) light blue triangles to the four sides of (2) Bright Bird and (3) Hummingbird 6 7/8” squares, as shown to make the Top border blocks. Press seams toward the square. Label and

    set aside.

    6. Sew (2) lavender triangles and (2) light blue triangles to the four sides of (3) Bright Bird and (2) Hummingbird 6 7/8” squares, as shown to make the Bottom border blocks. Press seams toward the square. Label

    and set aside.

  • Completing the Quilt Use the Exploded Quilt Diagram for Reference.

    1. Sew the 2" x 42 1/2" sapphire print strips to the top and bottom of the trimmed panel. Press seams toward the strips. Sew the 2” x 36 1/2" sapphire print strips to the sides of the panel. Press seams toward the strips.

    2. Sew (2) hummingbird left side blocks to (2) bright bird left side blocks, as shown, to make the left side border. Press seams open. Repeat to make the right side border. Sew the pieced borders to the left and right edges

    of the bordered panel. Press seams toward the center panel.

    3. Sew (3) hummingbird top border blocks, to (2) bright bird top border blocks, as shown, to make the top border strip. Sew the top left and top right corners to the border. Press seams open. Repeat, using (3) bright bird

    bottom blocks, (2) hummingbird bottom blocks, as well as the bottom left and bottom right corner blocks, to make

    the bottom border. Sew the pieced borders to the top and bottom of the center to complete the 54 1/2” x 63 1/2” quilt

    center. Press seams toward the center panel.

    4. Sew the remaining 2" x WOF sapphire print strips short ends together to make a long strip. Press seams to one side. Cut into (2) 54 1/2" and (2) 66 1/2” strips. Stitch the 54 1/2” strips to the sides of the quilt center and the

    66 1/2” strips to the top and bottom to complete the top. Press seams toward the strips.

    5. If using 42" backing fabric, remove the selvage edges from the backing pieces. Join the pieces on the long edges with a 1/2" seam allowance. Press seam open. Trim to make the 72" x 82" backing piece.

    6. Layer the quilt top with the

    backing and batting

    pieces. Quilt as

    desired. Trim

    batting and backing

    even with the top.

    7. Join the green hand-dye

    binding strips on

    the short ends with

    diagonal seams to

    make a long strip.

    Press seams in one

    direction. Press the

    strip in half along

    the length with

    wrong sides

    together. Bind the

    quilt edges using

    your favorite

    method to complete

    the quilt.
