ORGANICS PROCESSING Offerings
BioWatt Engineering Engineered IVC
IN VESSEL COMPOSTING – The basics
• Composting - a naturally occurring process in the presence of oxygen and water
• Biological processes - regulated by natural “environmentally limiting factors”
• ELFs - include insufficient oxygen, water, substrate, temperature
• Remove ELFs in a controlled engineered environment - biological population “explode” exponentially
• Massive growth in the biological population - Processes happen in days rather than months
• Tunnel Composting Design & Build
– Application - Aerated floor in-tunnel composting facilities – IP/ know-how resides with BioWatt
– Marsham IVC in operation
– Completing Wakefield PFI Project with Shanks
• PURDIE ® Plug Flow In-Vessel Bioreactor Design & Build
– Most aggressive and effective composting technology – Can deal with “difficult” hi-odour & hi-pathogen waste materials.
– UK designed and built technology
– Mark I operating in Kent
– Mark II designed

INPUT MATERIALS
GRITS
SCREENINGS
SEWER WASHINGS
Screenings:• Long and raggy in appearance • Issue - can wrap around moving parts• Need to be macerated at the works • >80% organic material
Grits:• Smaller particles • No shredding • Added to the process directly• > 60% organic material
General Qualities/ Issues:
• Highly odorous• High pathogen count• High moisture content• High bulk density• High cost of disposal ( >£100/t)
Site Clearance
Wood wastes
WASTESUnstable material with high O2 demand – Biohazard - Odorous
O2
Air introduced through turning -Forced air injection
PRODUCTStabilised material – Contains little readily biodegradable Carbon
Low odour - Low O2 demand - Low pathogens
H2O
CO2
Heat
CH2O etc

PURDIE BIOREACTOR – Process Flow
BioWatt Engineering Engineered IVC
Process Flow
Delivery of materials to site
Preparation of material for treatment.Un-macerated screenings require
shredding to avoid wrapping problems
PURDIE
Blending with “amending” material
and additives
Material spends up to 8-10 days in Bioreactor. Material is turned up to 250
times to maximise/ evenly distribute the composting process
Treated material is free of nuisance odour and is stored for up to two
weeks
Finished material can be screened and
sent for land remediation or
biomass fuel

Process Flow
5 tonnes of input material drains on the
reception floor to 4 tonnes
PURDIE
5 – 6 tonnes per day of “total feed” is dose-fed from the
hopper over a 24 hour period –on an hourly basis
40-60% mass reduction occurs:
2 tpd productdischarged
c. 15% (by weight) of the finished product is “oversize” – the woody
fraction can be recirculated
4 tonnes of input material is blended with 1.5 tonnes of
woody wastes5.5 tonnes of “total feed”
