History never repeats itself, but patterns of behavior tend to becyclical. History, like electricity, appears to be made up of positiveand negative charges which maintain a simulation of equilibrium. The basic process is change in the form of continuous motionwhich fluctuates; falls are compensated for by rises. This makesfor movement rather than progress. If there is little progress, bythe same sign there is little regression, rather a mean averagemovement along what eventually proves to be, by the laws ofaverages, a reasonably level road. As long as man remains in-telligent, I can see no ground to expect annihilation. He alwayshas the means of his own safety at the command of his own nervousorganization. I see no ground for pessimism unless man takesleave of his senses. Survival may not always be easy but it shouldnever be impossible, unless mankind loses the will to commandit. The historian, from his survey of the past, should know thisbetter than anyone else and it is his duty to proclaim it.

-Roy FRANKLIN NICHOLS
