therefore,whenIjoinedtheteachingstaffoftheHuseiniMadressainDares SalaamTanzaniain

early80'sandwhenIwassubsequentlyassignedtoteachIslamicHistory,Iwasataloss,not

knowingexactlywhattoteach.

Notthat

there

was

no

syllabus

for

this

subject.

Rather,

my

main

concern

was

the

scope

of

the

syllabusForatthecoreofIslamicHistorysyllabuswasthestudyofthelifeoftheProphet(may

peacebeuponhimandhisprogeny)andthoseoftheotherthirteenMASOOMINfromhis

progeny.

Inmyview,besidesYusufLaljeesexcellentbook,KNOWYOURISLAM,therewasnoothersimple

butinformativetextthatcouldbeusedcomfortablybyboththeteachersandthestudentsalike.

Eventhen,thesectiononthelife history7ofMASOOMINwasrathersketchyinKNOWYOUR

ISLAM.

Sincethosedays,IhavefelttheneedtocompilebriefteachingnotesonthelivesofourTwelve

Imams(maypeacebeuponthemall)withtwoobjectivesinmindFirst,tofocusonallthoseareas

ofinformation,notexclusivelyhistoric,

thatwouldenablethelearnertoappreciatethecomplexsituationsinwhichourImamslivedand

performedtheirdutiesasdmnelvappointedguidesfortheuniverseSecondly,topresentthis

informationinastylewhichhasatitscoretheinterestaswellastheaptitudeoftheteachersand

studentsalike.

Ifoundthistaskeasytoconceiveinmind,butverydifficulttoimplementNeedlesstosay,Icould

accomplishlittleinthisfielduntilwhenImigratedtotheUSA.

Asluckwouldhaveit,atHuseiniMadressainNewYork,IwasoncemoreassignedtoteachIslamic

History.ForreasonsIneednotdisclosethemhere,Ifoundthistaskevenmoredauntingthanit

wasinAfricaFortunately,

atthiscriticaltimewhenIwasgropingindarknessinsearchofsuitableteachingtextformyclass,

IwascommissionedbyMaulanaSayyidSaeedAkhtarRizvi,theChiefMissionaryofBilalMuslim

MissionofTanzaniatowriteteachingunitsencompassingthelivesofourTwelveImams(may

peacebeuponthem)fortheCorrespondenceCourseoftheMission.TomethiswasAllah sent

bountyintwoways.

Firstly,thiscommissiongavemecourageandconfidencethatIhithertolacked.NowIhadthe

supportofoneofthemostrenownedShiascholarsofourtimes MaulanaRizvi.

Secondly,Iwouldnothavetoworryaboutsearchingforsponsorstofinancetheprinting,the

publishingandthecirculationofmywritings;theBilalMuslimMissionofTanzaniawoulddothat.

ImamMuhammadTaqi(A.S.)wastheonlyson,andbymanyaccounts,theonlychildofImam

Reza(A.S.).Hismotherisknownbyseveralnamessuchas:Subaika,Sabika,Sukaina,Khizranand

ShewasaNubianfromnorthAfrica,andfromthesametribeasMariaKibtia(mary,theCoptic)

oneoftheProphet'swives.

ShewasaverypiouspersonsomuchsothatbeforeevenjoiningthehouseholdofImamReza

(A.S.)ImamMusaKazim(A.S.)usedtospeakaboutherinwordsofpraise.

Infact,ImamMusaKazim(A.S.)usedtotellhisfamilymemberstoremembertogiveherhis

greetingswhenanyofthemlivedtomeether.ImamReza(A.S.)alsousedtohaveveryhigh

opinionabouther.

HeoncetoldAliBinJafferthatImamMusaKazim(A.S.)oncetoldhimthattheProphet

(S.A.W.W.)hadtoldImamAli(A.S.)aboutImamMuhammadTaqi(A.S.)byreferringtoImamTaqi's

mother,callingher"TheBestoftheNubianmaid."

HISMIRTH:

ImamReza'ssister,Hakima,narratesthatonedayImam(AS.)requestedhertostayinhishouse

sinceachildwastobebornfromKhizran.

ThenewsthatachildwastobebornfromKhizransurprisedHakimasincenoonehadtoldher

beforethatKhizranwasexpectingachild,andmoresurprisingly,sheshowednosignsof

pregnancy!

However,inobediencetoherbrother'srequest,shestayedbehindandevencalledtwoother

womenintheneighbourhoodtobearoundtohelphertakecareofKhizianwhenshewasready

todeliverachild.

Aftermidnight,Khizranstartedshowingsignsofpregnancyandwentintolabourpains.Atdawn

('SubhSadiq)ababyboywasborn.Mewentintoprostration('.Sajda')inprayerstoAllah.

ImamReza(AS.)thenenteredthescene.Hakimawrappeddiechildinawhitecloth,andhanded

himtotheimam(AS.),whoread'Azan'inthechild'srightearand'Ikamah'inhisleftear.

TheImam(A.S)thenreturnedthechildtohissisterHakima,instructinghertokeephimwithher

forthreedays.Onthethirdday,thechildopenedhiseyes,lookedattheskyandreadthe

"Qalema".Hakimawasoverjoyed.

Shereportedwhatshehadseenandheardtoherbrother,ImamReza(A.S.)whotheninformed

herthatthisunusualbehaviourofthechildshouldnotsurprisehersincethiswasnotanordinary

childbut

Allah's

representative

on

the

earth.

ThenImamReza(AS)namedthechildMuhammad."Manaqib",relatesthathesawthesealof

ImamatontheplacebetweentheshouldersofImamTaqi(A.S.)

CHILDHOOD

Hespentthefirstfiveyearsofhislifewithhisfather.Asamatteroffact,hewasbornmanyyears

afterImamReza'smarriage.Priortohisbirth,ImamReza'senemiesusedtotaunttheImam(A.S.)

fornothavingasontosucceedhimdespitethefactthattheImam(A.S.)hadtoldthemthatAllah

wouldsoongranthimason.

TheImam'sfriendsandfollowersontheotherhand,wereworriedthattherewasnoissuefrom

theImamtosucceedhim.TheImamassuredthem,too,thatAllahwouldsoongranthimason

whowouldbethenextImam.

ThebirthofImamTaqi(A.S.),therefore,waswelcomedwithangeranddisappointmentbyImam

Reza'senemies,andwithreliefandhappinessbytheImam'sfriends.

BecausehismotherwasaNubianandbecausethecolourofhisskinwasdark,ImamTaqi(A.S.)

wascalled'Aswad'(TheBlackone)bytheenemiesofImamReza(A.S.).Howevertoothershewas

knownas"Taqi"(ThePiousone)and"Jawad"(TheGenerousone).

HewasthefirstamongImamsfromtheHouseoftheProphettohavebeenseparatedfromhis

fatherataveryyoungage.AtthetimeofthemartyrdomofImamReza(A.S.)ImamTaqi(A.S.)was

onlynineyearsold.

Itwasveryimportant,therefore,thatImamReza(A.S.)shouldmakehisfollowersreadytoaccept

ImamTaqi(A.S.)astheirnextImam,despitethefactthathewasonlyachildbytheirstandards.

AfewinstancesarequotedhereunderfromAlIrshadtoshowhowImamReza(A.S.)introduced

ImamTaqi(A.S.)tothecommunityofthefollowers:

MuhammadTaqi(A.S.).

Safwanexpresseshissuprisesaying,"Butheisjustachild,onlythreeyearsold."TheImamreplied

thatthisshouldnotreallymatterforhadn'tProphetIssa(A.S.)giventestimonyofhismission

whenhewaslessthanthreeyearsold?

MuammarBinKhaladheardImamReza(A.S.)saythathissuccessorwashissonMuhammad

(A.S.).TheImamthenadded,"Wearethe'AhlulBayf.Ouryounginheritourold,likeonefeather

(onawing)isfollowedbyanother."

AlKahyranisaysthatheheardsomebodyaskImamReza(A.S.)aboutMuhammadwhoatthat

timewasveryyoung.Themanexpresseshissuprise.

ImamReza(A.S.)replied,thatAllahhadsentProphetIssaasProphetandMessengerandthe

latterassumedhismissionwhenhewasyoungerinagethanImamMuhammadTaqi(A.S.).

SpecialQualitiesAsaChild

OverandaboveImamReza'sintroductionofImamTaqi(A.S.)tothefollowers,therewasalsoone

specialqualitythatAllahhadgiventoImamTaqi(A.S.)thatmadehimacceptableasImamofhis

timedespitehisyoungage;thisqualitywashisuniqueintelligence.Toseethisquality'atwork,

considerthefollowingincident.

AfterImam

Reza's

martyrdom,

Mamoon

Rashid

decided

to

call

Imam

Taqi

(A.S.)

to

Baghdad

so

as

tosilencethosewhobelievedthathehadcausedImamReza'sdeath.

ImamTaqi(A.S.)cametoBaghdadandhisfirstmeetingwithMamoonoccurredinaBazaarof

Baghdad.

Imam(A.S.)wasinthestreetsofBaghdadwhenMamoonaccompaniedbyhischoicestfriendsand

generalspassedby,ridingfastrunninghorses,Allchildrenwhowereplayinginthestreetsran

away,fearingmischieffromtheRoyalprocession.TheImam(A.S.),however,stoodfearlessly

watchingtheKingandhisentourage.

Mamoonhad

not

yet

met

the

Imam

(A.S.)

and

therefore

did

not

recognise

him

as

such.

But

he

couldnothelpobservingthecharmandthecourageoftheImam(A.S.).Hestoppedhishorse,and

inquired.

"Youngman,whatmadeyoustandherefearlesslywhenallotherchildrenofyourageranawayin

fearoftherunninghorses?"TheImam(A.S.)repliedwithoutanyhesitation.

HWhywouldIwanttorunawaywhenthereisenoughpassageforyouandyourhorsestopassby

andwhenIhavedonenothingwrongtofearreprisalsfromyou?"

Thechild'sperfectmannersandeloquencestunnedMamoon.Heaskedinbewilderment."Whose

sonareyou,youngman?""IamMuhammadthesonofAliBinMusa,"repliedthechold.

Mamoonwentawayonhishuntingexpedition,fullofthoughtsaboutwhathehadseenand

heard.

Aspartofhishuntingexercise,Mamoonsetfreeintheairhuntingfalcons.Oneofthefalcons

returnedcarryingalivefishinitsbeak.Thiswasnotusual.Forhowcouldafishbeintheairtobe

huntedbyafalcon?Mamoonwasaquickthinkingperson.Hethoughtofanideaandhidthefish

inhispalms.

Onhiswayback,hemetImamTaqi(A.S.)again.Mamoondismountedfromhishorse,camenear

theImam(A.S.)andsaid."OthesonofProphet!Canyoutellmewhatishiddeninmyclosed

palm?"

TheImam(A.S.)replied,"Allahhascreatedseasandriversandotherwaterbodies.Inthemlive

fishes.Sometimes,asaresultofstrongcurrents,somesmallfishesarepulledintotheair,and

becomeapreyofhuntingfalcons.

KingshidethefishintheirpalmstotesttheknowledgeofthechildrenoftheProphet."Mamoon

wasverymuchimpressedbytheImam'ssuperbreplyandtookhimtohispalace.

Suchdisplayofintelligencewasnotaccidental.TheImam(A.S.)wastoshowitagainso

abundantlythatbothfriendsandfoescouldnothelpbutacknowledgehisunsurpassable

knowledgeandwisdom.

Weshallseetheseinstancesattheappropriateplacesinthisunit.Atthispointitisenoughto

mentionthatatsuchyoungageheusedtorunclassesinMedinaintheMosqueoftheProphet,

surroundedbyscholarsfromdifferentpartsoftheworld.

Atone

instance,

agroup

of

pilgrims

asked

him

as

many

as

thirty

thousand

questions

and

he

answeredthemall,totheirsatisfaction.

t,thenunappearedagain,Wewenttiversal.IsmailbinIbrahimsaysthatonehewaspresent

Hisrecognitionasascholarwasuniversal.IsmailbinIbrahimsaysthatonehewaspresentamong

scolarsintheluminouspresenceoftheirgreatteacher,AlibinImamJafferSadiq(A.S.).Thencame

ayoungboywhowashardlythirteenyearsold.Theirteacher,AliBinJafferstoodupandwould

notsitdown,outofrespect,tilltheyoungboyimploredhimtodoso.Afterashortconversation,

theyoungboywentaway.

Therespectedteacheraccompaniedhimforsomedistance.Inthepresenceoftheyoungmanthe

teacherbehavedasifhehimselfwasalearner.

Afterthedepartureoftheyoungman,IsmailbinIbrahimsaystheycouldnothelpbutprotestto

theirteacher,sayingthathehadnocausefortreatingayoungboywithsuchrespect,notminding

hisownadvanceageandhighstatusasascholar.

TheseobjectionsupsetAliBinJaffer.Holdinghiswhite,flowingbeardinhishands,hesaid,"What

elseamIsupposedtodo?WhatAllahdidnotseeinthesewhitehairs,thatHesawinthe

youthfulnessoftheonewhomyoucanachild,andmadehimHisrepresentativeonthisearth.

IseekrefuseinAllahfromunderestimatingthepositionofthatchildandfromfailingtoshowdue

respecttohim."

HISFAMILY

HisfirstmarriagewastoUmmulFazl,thedaughterofMamoon,theCaliphofthetime.Hissecond

marriagewastoaNubianladyfromthesameclanasAmmarYasir,theProphet'sdearcompanion.

HernamewasSumannah.ShewasthemotherofourtenthImam,AliNaqi(A.S).

Imama.

ImamMuhammadBinAli(A.S.):HisAdulthood

INTRODUCTION

HewascalledupontoperformthedutiesoftheImamofthetimeataveryyoungageofeightor

nineyears.Andheleftawaythisworldalsoataveryyoungageof25.Thereforeitisrather

meaninglesstotalkofhislifeintermsofchildhoodandadulthood.

However,forthesakeofsimplicitywelookathislifeinthesetwophases thewaywedidforall

otherinfallibleImamsfromthehouseoftheProphet(S.A.W.W.)

MARTYRDOMOFHISFATHER,IMAMREZA(A.S.)

AtthetimewhenImamReza(A.S.)leftforMarvinA.H.200,ImamTaqi(A.S.)wasonlyfiveyears.

Thepartingofthefatherandthesonwasverypainfulandhasbeendescribedbyaneyewitness,

bythenameofUmayyaIbneAliwhoreports:

"BeforehisdepartureforMarv,ImamReza(A.S.)wenttoMeccatoprayinthehouseofAllah

(Ka'ba).Hisson,MuhammadTaqi(A.S.)waswithhim.

ImamReza(A.S.)completedhislastTawafoftheKa'baandwentatMakameIbrahimtopray.

ImamMuhammadTaqi(A.S.)waswithhisservant,Muwafaq,performingthe'TAWAF'ofKa'ba.

Havingfinishedthat,ImamTaqi(A.S.)retiredinonecorneroftheMosque.Muwafaqaskedthe

ImamtoaccompanyhimandgohomebuttheImamwasweeping;sayingwhatwastheuseof

goinghomewithouthisfather."

MuwafaqwenttocallImamReza(A.S.)whocameadconsoledhisson,askinghimtobearhis

separationpatientlyasthiswasthewillofAllah.

"ThefatherandthesonthenwentoutoftheMosque;thefatherleftforMarv,andthesonfor

Medina."

ImamReza(A.S.)neverreturnedfromthisjourney.Foryearslater,hewasmartyred.Butbefore

hedepartedthisworld,throughamiracle,hecontractedhissonImamTaqi(A.S.),askinghimto

cometoMarv.

WhenImamTaqi(A.S.)learnt,throughthespecialknowledgegiventohimbyAllah,thathis

father,ImamReza(A.S.),hadbeenpoisonedinSanabad(Iran)andwasabouttoleavethisworld,

throughspecialpowersgivenbyAllah.HewenttoMarvtobebythesideofhisfather,andto

offeralltheritualservicesgiventothedead.AfterthathereturnedtoMedina.

AstheImamofhistimes,hestartedservingIslaminthesamewayashispredecessorshaddone.

His"headquarters",asitwere,wastheProphet'sMosqueinMedinawherepeoplefromallover

theworldwouldcomeinsearchofknowledgeandguidanceandhewouldservethemall.

Hisbiggestchallengewashisage.However,anyonewhocaminhiscontactwouldimmediately

recognizehisexcellenceandseeinhimtheextraordinaryqualitiesfoundinonlytheImams

appointedbyAllah.

Forhisownselfishreasons,MamooninvitedImam(A.S.)toBaghdad,andofferedhisown

daughterUmmulFadhltohim,inmarriage.

ThenoblemenandcourtiersfromtheclanofAbbas(ThecBaniAbbasi')wereveryangrywith

MamoonforwishingtomakeImamTaqi(A.S)hissoninlaw.Theysentastrongdelegationto

Mamoon,expressingtheirdissatisfactionwiththisarrangement.

Aroyalprincessgiventothe"childImam"wouldhumiliatethenoblehouseofAbbas1Mamoon's

replywas"Donotunderestimatethischild,hehasqualitiesthatnoneamongstyouhas."

Tosatisfythem,MamoongavethempermissiontotesttheyoungImam'sknowledgeandany

otherskillsthattheywished.TheBaniAbbasiwereveryhappywiththisproposal.

TheyplannedtohavetheImamtestedbythemostrenownedscholarofthecourt,KaziYahya

IbneAksam,whoalsohappenedtobetheheadoftheJudiciaryoftheMuslimempireatthat

time.("Kaziul Kuzzat").

THEQUESTION ANSWERSESSIONINTHEROYALCOURT.

TheBaniAbbasiweresurethattheImam(A.S)wasnomatchtothecraftyKazi.However,they

wantedthewholeworldtoseetheyoungImamhumiliated.Bytheirinsistence,Mamoon

arrangedforafullcourtsessionandinvited900scholarstobepresenttowatchtheImambeing

tested.

TheCourtwasfullydecoratedfortheoccasion.Irnam(A.S)wasofferedaplacetotherightof

KaziYahya,beamingwitharrogance,turnedtoMamoon,seekingformalpermissiontobegin

testingtheImam(A.S).

Mamoonadvised

him

to

seek

the

permission

from

Imam

(A.S)

himself

Yahya

addressedtheImamsaying,"MayIaskyouaquestion?"

TheImamreplied.Yes,goahead."

Yahyathenpausedhisquestion"Whatfinedoesapersonhavetopayifhehuntswhileheisstill

in'Ihram"(Ifoneisin'Ihram"ofpilgrimagetoMecca,heisforbiddenfromdoing25thingsoneof

thembeinghunting).

Yahyahadareasonforaskingthisquestion.Inhiswisdom,hethoughtthathowevercleverthe

childmaybeinIslamic"FIQH",hisknowledgewouldbelimitedtomattersof"Salat",fastingetc.;

thechildwouldhardlyknowmatterson"Hajj"asthisactisperformedbutonceinayearoronce

inlifetime.Yahyawasprovedwrong.TheImampolitelybutfirmlreplied,"Yourquestionhasno

answer,becauseitistotallyincomplete."

ThisreplysentchillindiespineofYahyaandeveryonepresentintheCourt.

TheImamcontinued,"Youhavetotellmeifthis"Muhrim"(Theonewhoiswearingthespecial

garmentforperformingpilgrimagewhenenteringMecca)killedtheanimalin"HILL"(inthenon

forbiddenarea)or"HARAM"(theforbiddenarea)?

Didhedothisactinignorance,bymistakeorpurposely?Wasthe"MUHR1M'afreepersonora

slave,youngorold,anexperiencedhunteroraninexperiencedor:Wastheanimalwhichwas

huntedabirdoramammal,smallorlarge?Wasthehunterrepentantornonrepentant?Wasthe

huntingdoneindaylightoratnight?WasthehunterintheIhramof'Hajj'or"Umra"?"

AftertheImamhadrestatedquestion,everyoneintheCourtknewthatYahyadidnotknowthe

answer!Therewasacompletesilence:Yahyawishedhewasneverborn!

Mamoonturnedtohiscourtiersandsaid,"Didn'tItellyouthatthisyoungman'sknowledgeis

supremeandunmatchable?"HethenrequestedtheImam(A.S.)toreplythequestionasnone

knewtheanswer.

InreplytheImamsaid,"Ifthe'Muhrim'huntedin"Hill"alargebirdhewouldhavetogiveKaffara

sheep.

Ifthebirdhuntedwassmallandkilledat"Hill"the"Kaffara"wouldbealambthathadstopped

takingmilk.Thesimilarbirdifhuntedat"Haram"wouldcallforaKaffaraofalambandmonetary

valueof

asmall

bird.

"Asforwildanimalsat"Hill",ifawild,aswaskilledthe"Kaffara"wouldbeacow.Ifanostrichwas

IMAM'SMARRIEDLIFE

Peoplehadexpectedthatafterhismarriagetotheprincessoftheland,theyouthfulImamwould

leadalifeofluxuryandcomfortinapalaceofhisownorthatofMamoon.Imam(A.S.)proved

themwrong.Herentedhisownapartmentwithmeagerfurnishingandcontinuedlivingasimple

life,likehehaddonebeforehismarriage.

Hiswayofliferemainedunchanged.OneofhisfriendsnarratesthathepaidtheImam(A.S.)avisit

afterthelatter'smarriage.HewassurprisedtoseethattheImam'slivinghabitshadremained

totallyunchangedalthoughhewasnowthesoninlawoftheCaliph.

Inthemeanwhile,thefriendbecamethirstyubuthewastoonervoustoaskforwater.TheImam

(A.S.)askedhisservanttobringwater.Theservanttookhisowntime.TheImam(A.S.)went

himselftobringwaterandthusservedhisfriendpersonally.

HiswifeUmmulFazlwhohadbeenbroughtupasaprincessfoundthissimpleandhumblelife

unbearable.ShebecameacontinuoussourceoftroublefortheImam(A.S.).

HerangerandjealousyknewnolimitswhentheImammarriedaNubianslave maidcalled

Sumannah.UmmulFazlwenttoherfatherMamoonandcomplainedabouttheImam(A.S.).

Mamoonatthattimewasdrunk.Hearmedhimselfwithaswordandaccompaniedbyhisservants

HebrokeintotheImam'sbedroomandattackedthesleepingImamleavingthebedroomonly

Nextday,whenhewasinformedofwhathehaddoneon(hepreviousnight,Mamoonwassorry

forhisactionsandsenthisspecialservantYasirtotheImam'shousetoinquireabouttheImam's

condition.

Tohisbewilderment,Yasirsawtheimam(A.S)safeandsound,brushinghisteeth!Yasirwentback

informedMamoonthattheImamwaswell.Mamoonabagcontaining20,000dinarstotheImam

withYasir.

YasirthenrequestedtheImam(A.S)togivehimtheshirtthathewaswearing!TheImam(A.S)

removedhisshirtforYasirwhosawthattherewasnotevenasinglescratchontheImam'sbody.

Smilingly,theImam(A.S.)askedYasirifthiswasMamoon'sideaandwaslinkedwiththeprevious

night'sevent.YasirrepliedthathewasnowactingonhisownandthatMamoonwastrulysorry

forwhathehaddonethepreviousnight.

Inthemeantime,Mamoon,too,cametoImam(A.S.)toapologiseforhismisbehaviourHegave

theImam(A.S)asagifttheswordthathehadusedagainsttheImam(A.S.)andthehorseon

whichherodetogototheImam'shousetokillhim.OntheotherhandtheImam(A.S.)made

Mamoonpromisenevertouseliquoragain.

MamoonthenwarnedhisdaughternevertocomplaintohimabouttheImam(A.S.)orelsehe

wouldneverseeortalkwithher.

AyearafterhismarriagetoUmmulFazl,Imam(A.S.)returnedtoMedina.UmmulFazlecamewith

himbutkeptonwritingletterstoherfathercomplainingthattheImam(.A.S.)hadmarried

anotherwoman.

Mamoon'sreplywas,"IdidnotgiveyouinmarriagetoAbuJaffersothat!shouldmakeforhim

Haram(Forbidden)whatAllahhasmadeHalal(Legitimate)."

InMedina,Imam'smainjobwastoserveIslam,Oneof"hisgreatestachievementswastoweaken

theWaqifiaMovementwhichhadbeenformedonthedeathofImamMusaKazim(A.S)and

whichhadbeenacauseofserioustroubletoImamReza(A.S.).BecauseofImamTaqi'sefforts

WaqifiaMovementwasnomoreathreattoIslam.

MuhammadTaqi(AS.)HewroteinstructionstothegovernorofMedinatosendImamTaqi(A.S.)

UmmulFaziltoBaghdadimmediately.

ThiswasinAH218.WheninBaghdadtheImamwasputunderhousearrest.UmmulFazl's

complaintsagainstthegaveMutassimagoodexcusetoharasstheImam.

LifefortheImam(A.S)becamesodifficultthatinthelastdaysofhislife,oneveryFridaywhenhe

camebackfromthehewouldpraytoAllahsaying,"OmyLord!Ifmysalvationfromthe

oppressionofthisworldliesinmydeath,thenhastenitfromthisverymoment."

TheImam(A.S.)finallyleftthisworldon29ZilqaadAH220afterbeingpoisonedbyUmmulFazl

throughtheinstigationofMuttasim,heruncleandtheCaliphofthetime.

CHARACTER

Wealllovechildren!Howmanyofushowever,wouldentrustthemwiththesafetyandsecurity

ofourlives?

ImamMuhammadTaqi(A.S.)proclaimedhisImamatatthetenderageofnine.Eventhemost

genuinefollowersofImamReza(A.S.)foundithardtoaccepthim.

ImamTaqi(A.S.)neededtoconducthimselfinanexceptionalwaytoconvinceeventhemost

sympatheticfollowersthat,indeed,hewastheirspiritualleaderandtherepresentativeofAllah

onearth.Hedidthisthroughtheexcellenceofhischaracter.

ThegreateststrengthofImam'spersonalitywashisintelligence.Notonlywashethemost

knowledgeablepersonofhistimes,buthisknowledgewasalsosupportedbythreeother

qualities:

Abilitytothinkveryfastandgiveimmediateanswers;Excellentspeakingmannersthatwould

charmevenhismostavowedenemies;andAbilitytoexplaindifficultideasinasimplelanguage

usingcommonexamples.

ToseehowthesequalitiesintheImam(A.S.)worked,consideragainhisquestionanswersession

inMamoon'scourtwithKaziYahyaBinAksam.

NoticehowpolitelybutfirmlydidhedealwithbothMamoonandKaziYahyadespitetheirageand

position.Asamatteroffact,hischarm,hisconfidenceandhiscouragemeltedthehardheartsof

hisenemies,theBaniAbbas,likeheatmeltsbutter.Theyallacceptedhissupremacyinknowledge

andwisdom,despitetheirprejudices.

Overandabovehisintelligence,ourninthImam(A.S.)hadotherexcellentqualitieswhichare

Youthfulnessisalwaysassociatedwithplayfulness.ButthiswasnotsowithourninthImam.His

GENEROSITY

ImamMuhammad

Taqi

(A.S.)

known

as

"Jawad"

or

the

generous

one.

His

generosityknew

nobounds.Hewastherefortheneedyaswellasforanyoneelsewhosoughtforhishelp.Itis

saidthatwheneverhewentoutofhishomehemadesurethathehadwithhimenoughmoneyas

toenablehimtomeetthedemandsofthosewhowenttohimforhelp.

Followinghisfather'sadvice,hewouldgivetohisrelativesnotlessthan50Dirhamsatonetime.

Likehisgreatgrandparents,heusedtovisittheneedyinthedarknessofthenightandmeettheir

demandswithoutthemknowingwhotheirbenefactorwas.

ForthosewhomtheImam(A.S.)couldnotreachinperson,hewouldmeettheirneedsthrough

hisagents.

ThosewhovisitedMedinaorBaghdaddependinguponwheretheImam(A.S.)wasatthattime,

adwhodidnothaveaplacetostay,wouldgotoImam'shouse.Ononesuchoccasionavisitor

paidtheImam(A.S.)avisitlateatnight.

TheImam(A.S.)welcomedhimandaskedhimifhewashungry.Thevisitorrepliedthathewas,

indeed,hungrybuthedid'ntwishtohaveanyfoodasthiswouldinconvenienceImam(A.S.).

TheImam's(A.S.)replywas"Noonesleepshungryinmyhouse."

TheImam(A.S.)thenawakenedhismaidrequestinghertomakedoughforbreadwhereashe

wouldhimselfheatthestove.ThemaidvolunteeredtodoboththejobsherselfbuttheImam

(A.S.)insistedonmakingfireinthestovearguingthathetoowantedtoearnrewardfromAllah

forservingtheguest.

NoticingtheImam'ssincerity,thevisitorburstintotears.Hethensaid"Howunfortunateitisthat

theworlddoesnotrecogniseandvaluesuchapersonalityasthisone."

HUMILITY

Hisunsurpassableknowledge,andhishighpositioninthecourtofMamoonandhisspecial

relationshipwithMamoonashisfatherinlawnevergotintotheheadourImam(A.S.).

OnceImam(A.S.)wasverysick.Avisitorcametoseehimforsomeurgentmatters.Imam'sfamily

memberswantedtosendawaythevisitorbuttheImam(A.S.)sawhemustmeethim.TheImam

(A.S.)was

helped

by

his

servants

to

get

out

of

his

bed.

ThevisitorhadwishedthattheImam(A.S.)wouldvisittheformer'sfatherwhowasonhisdeath

bedandwantedtorelatehiswilltotheImambeforedying.Thevisitorthensaid,"Butseeingyour

condition,Icannotaskyoutocomewithmetoseemyfather."

TheImam(A.S.)insistedonvisitinginthesickpersonanddidsodespitehisownsickness.

BRAVERY

Allalong,MamoonandhisAbbasideclanhadthoughtthatdespitehissuperintelligence,the

Imam(A.S.)wouldbecontrolledthroughthepowerofthePalace.TheImam(A.S.)provedthem

wrong.TheImam'srefusaltogiveawayhisGodgivenrighttomarymorethanonewife,when

appropriate,illustratesthispoint.

NeitherUmmulFazFscomplaintsnorthepressureoftheBanicourtierswouldforcehimto

divorcehisNubianwife.

Hedidno!makeitsecretthattohimtheonewithnobilityofcharacterwasbetterthantheone

withnobilityofbloodinsupportofhisexcellentstand,Allahcontinued;tieoftheProphetthrough

SamannahtheNubiannotUmmulFazlthe"Pure"Quraish!

ItneededrealcouragetostandagainstUmmulFazl'sandlater,Muttasim'spressures,andthe

Imam(A.S.)didjustthat,notcaringfortheconsequences.Suchabravepersonhewas.

Damascus.HiscrimewasthatheclaimedtobeaProphet.Alipaidhimavisitoutofcuriosity.The

prisonerlookedpiousandvirtuous.HetoldhisstorytoAliBinKhalidinthefollowingwords.

"IamaresidentofDamascus.IusedtospendmynightsprayingatasitewhereonceImam

Husain's(A.S.)severedheadhadbeenkept,asIconsideredthisplacetobeaHolysite.

"Onenightayoung,goodlookingandpiouspersoncamethere.Heaskedmetoaccompanyhim

and1didso,Wehadn'tgonemuchwhenwefoundourselvesintheMosqueofKufa(Masjide

Kufa)heaskedmeifIknewwherewewereandIsaidwewereintheMosqueofKufa,Bothofus

prayed.

WethenwalkedalittleandwewereintheMosqueoftheProphetinMedina!

Theretoo,weprayedandthenwewalkedforashortwhileandfoundourselvesstandingnearthe

Kaba,Weperformedthe"Tawaf'(sevenrounds)oftheKabaThen,wewalkedforalittlebitand

wewerebackinDamascus.BeforeIcouldfindoutwhohewas,theyoungmandisappeared.

"Oneyearafterthisevent,thenunappearedagain,Wewenttoallthoseplaceswhichwehad

doneinthepreviousyear.However,tinstimebeforehecoulddisappearIrequestedhimtotell

mewhohewas.

theprisonhopelesslyfromoneplacetoanotherasthenprisonerhaddisappeared,althoughthe

AliBinKhalidsaysIknewwhathadhappenedTheImam(A.S.)musthavefreedtheinnocent

personUptothatmomentAliBinKhalidwasaZaidiandnotthefollowerofImamTaqi(A.S.).

HavingwitnessedImam'smiracle,hebecameafollowerofImamMuhammadTaqi(A.S.).

Alisaysthatafterthisincident,onedayhemettheprisonerwhotoldhimthat,indeed,itwas

ImamTaqi(AS)whopaidhimavisitintheprisonandsethimfree.

ImamReza(A.S.)hadtakenaloanof4000DirhamsfromamanknownasAlMitrafi.Imam(A.S.)

wasmartyredbeforehecouldrepaytheloan.BesidesthelenderandImamReza(A.S.),noone

elseknewaboutthisloanandtherewasnothinginwritingTherewasnoway,thereforeforAl

Mitrafitoclaimfortheloan.

HedecidedtowriteitoffThenImamMuhammadTaqi(AS)calledhiminhishouseandaskedhim

astowhyhehadnotclaimedforhis4000Dirhamsthathehadlenttohisfather!TheImam(A.S.)

thenputhishandbeneaththeprayerscarpet,tookoutapouchandhandeditovertoAlMitrafi.

him.AbuSaltneveragainsawMamoonandwasneverbotheredbyMamoonorhismenever

MuhammadbinAliAlHashimreportsthathevisitedImam(A.S.)onthedayfollowinghis

marriagetoUmmulFazl.Becauseofthemedicinehehadtakenonthepreviousnight,hewas

feelingverythirsty.However,hedidnotwanttotroubletheImam(A.S.)sohedidn'taskfor

water.

ButtheImam(A.S.)lookedathimandtoldhimthatsincehewasthirstywouldhecaretohave

water?MuhammadBinAliacceptedtheoffer.Imam(A.S.)askedhisservanttobringwaterfor

Muhammad.

Whentheservantbroughtwater,Muhammadfearedthatthewaterhadbeenpoisoned.The

Imam(A.S.)immediatelytookthewaterandhavingdrunkfromitpassedontoMuhammadBin

Ali.

Muhammadbecamethirstyagain,TheImamfA.S.)againgotwaterforhimtestedithimselffirst

andthenpasseditontoMuhammadBinAllAlHashim.

(S.A.W.W.)sentmetoYemenhesaid,OAli,anyonewhoexpectsgoodnessfromAllahisnever

disappointedandanyonewhoasksHisguidancehasnocausetoregret."

6.ImamMuhammadTaqi(A.S.)reportsImamAli(A.S.)tohavesaid,"Riseupearlyinthemorning

forthepleasureofAllahasAllahbestowsablessingonthosewhoriseearly."

7.SheikhSudduqreportsinhis"ItiqadatulImaniyyah"thatImamMuhammadTaqi(A.S.)was

askedastowhysomeMuslimsdislikedeath.TheImam(A.S.)replied"Theyareignorantofitand

thereforetheydislikeit.IftheypossessedknowledgeofitandweretruefriendsofAllahthey

wouldloveitandwouldsurelyknowthattheotherworldisbetterforthemthanthis.

"TheImam(A.S.)added,"OSlaveofAllah!Whydoesthechildorthemadmanrefusestotakethe

medicinewhichcleanseshisbodyandremoveshispain?

IswearbyhimwhosentMuhammad(S.A.W.W.)astheProphetoftruth,thosewhoprepare

themselvesfordeathastheyarerequired,theywillfinddeathabettercurethanmedicine.

Ifonlytheyknewwhatablessingdeathwouldbetothem.Thentheywouldcalloutforitand

desiremedicinemorethanthewiseandresolutemanwhodesiresitsoastouseittocuretheir

illnessandrecovertheirhealth."
