Financing

The project has a total budget of more than 3 000 000 euro. Of that is 42% financed by EU’s Financial Instrument for the Environment LIFE+. Other finance partners is Regionförbundet Uppsala, Regionförbundet Sörmland, Stockholms läns landsting, Region Östergötland, Länsstyrelsen Västmanland and the project partners.

Purpose

The main purpose of the project is to demonstrate how biogas can play an important role when it comes to

About the projectachieve EU’s goals for reducing GHG, increase re-newable fuels and energy efficeny. Biogas XPOSE is going to demonstrate how the production of CNG (ba-sed on biogas) can increse in a economic and sustai-nable way, with local and regional waste as a resourse.

Main content

The project can be divided in three main cathegories. One part is to build, test and evaluate some new tech-niques that could improve the development of biogas in the region. The other part is communication and strategy and the last one consists of project manage-ment and administration.

This report summarizes the activities in Biogas XPOSE. The project started 2013 and ended 2018. During these years, Biogas Öst and Vafab Miljö, NeoZeo, Cortus and RISE worked to maximize the production of biogas in the region. The region is Uppsala, Västmanland, Södermanland, Örebro, Stockholm and Östergötland county. One goal has been to find new solutions in biogas production. For example a new technique for construction and testing of a novel gasification technology and a small scale upgrading device.

Many communication activities has been made in the project, for example a magazine with information about the successful biogas work in the region. Another important part has has been to strategic work for an effective development of biogas in the region. A big part of that has been to arrange meetings, take part

introductionin conferences, seminars and lectures. Biogas Öst has during the project been responsible for project mangement and communication activities. Vafab Miljö, NeoZeo and Cortus has been responsible for the technical tests and RISE has been respnsible for evaluating the results.

Many technical tests has been performed during the project. A few examples is a new technique for construction and testing of a novel gasification technology and a small scale upgrading device.

Technical tests

Responsible partner: NeoZeo AB

One of the results of the project Biogas XPOSE is a new kind of technology that enables cost efficient small scale biogas upgrading. The technique is based on modules placed in containers. For now the tech-nique is best suited for upgrading of raw biogas flow between 10-200 Nm3 per hour. The module has low energy consumption per cubic meter of raw biogas

and it can upgrade raw biogas to biomethane qua-lity. The module does not require heat, water supply or liquid chemicals. The module has small footprint and does not require a concrete foundation (level ground is sufficient). It was tested in Uppsala but last year also on some other places in Sweden.

Many study visits has been arranged at the plant in Uppsala.

When Vafab was reorganized from a muncipal company to a local federation the conditions to build a dry fermentation facility changed. The plan-ned investment was removed from the project.

Dry fermentation

Responsible partner: Cortus AB

In the region there is a large amount of biomass that is not suitable for conventional fermenta-tion techniques. Examples of such substrates are horse manure, unsorted household waste, residues from forestry, etc. Within the project a number of laboratory tests of different types of waste products have been carried out with the purpose of determining whether they are suitable for the gasification technique. Reports from these tests can be downloaded from www.biogasxpose.eu.

The WoodRoll process has been patented by Cortus Energy and works in such a way that it gasifies forest fuel and generates renewable energy gas, which can now be converted into CNG.

gasification technologyThe campaign that Cortus Energy did at the pilot plant in Köping delivered a good result: it is possible to produce CNG by gasification of low-value fuels with the company's WoodRoll® process.

Cortus energy produces CNG for the first time.

In the test campaign, the energy gas has been transformed into CNG by first converting into a catalytic process to methane and carbon dioxide, after which the carbon dioxide has been separated and the CNG is pressurized for refueling in gas cars. The catalytic process has been developed by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in an EU project where Cortus Energy, which owns the market rights of the process, participates as an industrial part-ner.

Communication and strategy

A very important part of the project is to strategically promote effective biogas development in the region. It includes organizing meetings, gathering information material and participating in conferences, seminars and lectures.

Muncipality meetings

Starting in autumn 2014, meetings with around 20 muni-cipalities have been conducted. The aim of the meetings was to inform about biogas and the importance of coor-dination.

with WWTP groups (STAR, VA-kluster Mälarda-len), several meetings in Strängnäs about starting production of biogas, meeting with Mälardalsrå-det, participation in conferences/seminars (Nordic Biogas Conference etc.), lecture on biogas for the public transport board in Uppsala, meeting with CEO SHEAB, meeting on the development of the biogas market in Örebro, meeting with Swedavia on gas vehicles, procurement meeting with Uppsa-la municipality, meeting with PREEM and meeting with The National Agency for Public Procurement.

Fuel from waste is a vital part of Stockholm’s climate action plan

Stockholm is reaching for an ambitious target of 70 percent food waste recycling in 2020, finding new methods for collection and raising the awareness of food waste as a resource.

– Stockholm has set the goal to be a fos-sil fuel free city by the year 2040. Renewable energy produced within the city will be of great importance. Biogas will be one vital

Taking care of local energy resources is part of Stockholm’s climate action plan. Food waste contains both soil nutrients and energy and is deemed a valuable resource by Vice Mayor of Environment, Katarina Luhr. Stockholm has set the goal to reach 70 percent food waste recycling in 2020 and to be a fossil fuel free city by the year 2040. In reaching both of these goals, producing biogas from waste is crucial.

– Freely available energy resources can’t be wasted. Food waste is a clean raw material and the digestion residues can safely be used as fertilizers, recycling valuable nutrients.

50 percent recycling of food waste in 2018 is a national target. So far, Stockholm is one of the bottom fifteen councils. Reaching 70 percent will clearly demand action.

Katarina Luhr explains the rationales behind the tough goal:

– With a high population density and many restaurants, Stockholm has a great potential for food waste collection. The-re is a large demand for biogas in the city, both for the local gas grid and for the

transport sector. In 2020 it seems reasonable that we can reach the 70 percent line, if we put all our effort to it.

– In the future, I hope the value of ener-gy produced from waste will be more obvio-us to society. The price of energy is, from an environmental point of view, unreasonably low presently, she concludes.

Striking facts about biogas in Sweden• As much as 63 percent of the biogas produced in sweden in 2015 was upgraded and used as vehicle fuel.

• In 1995, Sweden had one CNG filling station that was open to the public and one CNG filling station for buses.

• Twenty years later the number of methane filling stations open to the public exceeded 160 and there are about 60 CNG filling stations for buses.

• Biogas made up more than 70 percent of the methane distributed to all CNG and LNG filling stations in Sweden in 2015.

• In council transport, almost 80 percent of travels (kilo-metres) where run on biofuels or electricity in 2015. Bio-diesel was the most common biofuel and biogas was in second place.

Many European countries have extensive natural gas grids. Sweden is not one of them. Still, the country is a front runner when it comes to using renewable biomethane in transport.

Det framtida biobaserade samhället! Välkommen den 11 december till en konferens med fokus på de gröna näringarnas möjligheter att bli producent av förnybar energi i det framtida biobaserade samhället.

Minna Gillberg, LRF, inleder dagen med presentation av möjligheterna i det framtida biobaserade samhället och Karin Varverud, Energifabriken lyfter det fossilfria lantbruket och dess roll i att bidra till en fossilfri fordonsflotta.

Vi lyfter också möjligheten för biogasen, en viktig del i kretsloppet som idag redan kan ersätta en stor del av det fossila bränslet. Sol och vind är också viktiga delar i att ställa om vårt samhälle där den gröna näringen har stor potential som framtida producent.

Under förmiddagen presenteras de utmaningar och möjligheter som ligger framför oss. Under eftermiddagen väljs ett område att fördjupa sig inom där affärs- och klimatnyttan för respektive område beskrivs. Tillsammas diskuterar vi hinder och möjligheter för utökad produktion och användande i länet.

Syftet med konferensen är dels att öka kunskapen inom dessa områden för de som är intresserade av att investera inom förnybar energi, dels att komma fram till flera möjliga projektidéer för utökad produktion och marknad för förnybar energi i länet.

Konferensen vänder sig till dig som är politiker, tjänsteman eller lantbruksföretagare. Kommunerna har en viktig roll i att ställa om till ett biobaserat samhälle. Dina synpunkter är viktiga och kan ligga till grund för konkreta projekt som bidrar till att uppnå den regionala klimat- och energistrategin.
