About Ozone • Discovered in 1840 by Christian Schonbein

• Siemens built the first ozone generator 1857

• Nice in France became the first city to use oozone for treatment of water in 1906

• 1911 used for a food preservative for meat

• Ozone widely used for treatment of tap water , s swimming pool , purification plants

How Ozone is made in nature

• Ozone is produce by lightning during thunderstorms (corona discharge).

• UV light : oxygen in presence of UV light creates ozone.

Page 5: Biofresh 2013 UKTI Warsaw

How Ozone is made by generators

• Corona discharge : Oxygen is forced between high voltage plates to simulate corona discharge.Oxygen is split and turn into ozone.

• UV light : Oxygen is broken apart by UV light from UV bulb and becomes ozone.

Ozone : a natural disinfecting agentOzone reacts with bacteria, fungi, spores (oxidizing agent)

Suppresses decay from microbial activity

Sanitises the environment before, during and after crops are stored

scanning electron micrograph showing fungal developmentafter exposure to low levels (150ppb) of ozone for 10 days.

Cleanses storage environment

Continual presence of low level of ozone

Cleans of spores and aerial borne fungal spores

Prevent cross–contamination from infected crops

Removes ethylene from the air

Leaves no residue

Ozone has a very short half-life

It breaks down into nothing but oxygen

Process is totally residue free

Certified Organic treatment in the US (usda ,fda) & Canada

No Chemical Residues

Decontamination Transport System ColdStorage System

Page 18: Biofresh 2013 UKTI Warsaw

Biofresh Ozone generators

Biofresh generators capable of treating cells of any size Ozone generators are combined with oxygen concentrators The units are constantly monitored by sensors installed inside the cold room

The correct concentration of ozone is maintained

Page 19: Biofresh 2013 UKTI Warsaw

Biofresh Multistore System

Modular design for up to 16 stores High accuracy due to local ozone generation and continuous measurement User friendly touch screen interface

Programmable day/night ozone level setting for each store

Closed loop model based control

Page 20: Biofresh 2013 UKTI Warsaw

Biofresh Multistore System

Integrated web server provides visibility via standard web browser Data logging compatible with Microsoft Excel as standard Ability to integrate other monitoring systems

(e.g. CO2 and temperature)

Audit trail information (e.g. store utilization)

SmartPallet : Ozone on the moveStandard pallet size requires no extra storage space

Can be used in all sizes of containers -20’ or 40’- Easily transportable by fork lifts Delivers the prescribed level of ozone

Purify air and surfaces throughout the voyage

Page 23: Biofresh 2013 UKTI Warsaw

SmartPallet : Ozone on the move

No complicated programming Need to be charged before utilisation

No external power source required No frequent maintenance Generation of ozone up to 30 days

OZ80 : Ozone on the move Simple programming Integrates with the container’s refrigeration and ventilation system

Works on new or existing containers Treat a full truck container 20’ or 40’

Purify air and surfaces throughout the voyage

Level o₃ 0.10/015ppm

Decontamination Portable Unit Disinfects storage rooms, containers and storage boxes

Inhibits proliferation of bacteria without leaving chemical residue Processes reach areas, walls, ventilation systems etc...

Removes ethylene, eliminates odours

Reduces CIPC residues in potato stores

Page 29: Biofresh 2013 UKTI Warsaw

Decontamination Portable Unit

A container of 40ft is disinfected in 4 hours, a 1000m3 cold room in 48 hours. Ozone rapidly decomposes into oxygen and leaves no detectable residues. The treated area can be entered and operate immediately after disinfection.

Alternative to existing chemical treatment with a generation of ozone at high concentrations(12grs/hr).

Page 30: Biofresh 2013 UKTI Warsaw

Regulations EEC91/414/EEC : plant protection product (PPP), plants, plant products, harmful organisms• Ozone is out of scope (no placing on the market)

98/8/EEC : biocidal product (BP), harmful organisms• Ozone is out of scope (generation in situ)

Organic treatment in Europe: Not yet certified • Autorisation pending

Page 31: Biofresh 2013 UKTI Warsaw

Regulations Worldwide

USA: • FDA Expert Panel approved as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) in 1997

• Approved under USDA Organic Rule in 2000

Canada , Australia , New Zealand: • Authorisation for organic treatment for Fruits & Vegetables
