All our products are designed, tested, manufactured and finally given test runsat our home base in Finland beforethey are released to the world markets.

Every successful delivery demands a co-ordinated effort by many people. We invest in meaningful work and the well-being of our clients and staff.

Creating something newWe believe in hard work. We have focused our resources on our ar-eas of expertise and trained highly skilled engineers and mechanics to work in our company. This is why many of our staff are eager to create new technologies and steer the world towards sustainable development. Jointly, we enabled the development, design and manufacture of completely new products for the customer’s ben-efit. The hard work has paid off, as many of our primary products have become long time market leaders in their applications.

Long-term customerrelationshipsWhen the service life of our ma-chines are commonly measured in decades rather than years, it is a proof that choices we have made have passed the test of time. When customers return to buy Saalasti products and services it is the appreciated sign of their satisfaction of which we are grateful for.

Playing fair and squareSaalasti is a family business, now in its third generation. This means that serving customers is warm instead of cold business for us. Our customers appreciate our laid-back way of dealing with them. We are easy to reach and understand – we do not use “law-yer language”. And you can even contact our managing director. There has been a lot of positive feedback from customers for a job well done. But maybe even more valuable for us is the feedback we have received when things have not gone as originally planned. We always fix things and never leave a job unfinished.

Everyone at Saalasti crushes, mills, presses, dries, grinds and screens biomass. Making boiler fuel is in our blood. Saalasti has over 70 years’ experience in heavy machinery and over

30 years in converting forest-based biomass into power plant fuel. We supply both individual machines and entire processing stations, with our after-sales services ranging from equipment inspections to contractual main-tenance.

Serving the customer

SalesOur salesmen are engineers with a business touch. When they agree about a contract with a customer, we start a long rela-tionship. Our sales work focuses on making Saalasti the most economic choice by minimizing lifecycle costs. Actually, that proc-ess has started already on the drawing boards of our designers who have dimensioned the main components for 250 000 hours of use and chosen wear parts that combine fast changing times and robustness with reasonable costs. Even more importantly, every-thing is designed to work with our In-Service Inspection – a service of Saalasti that keeps the opera-tors up to date about the wear and conditions of the inspected machine. During the sales proc-ess we also offer free of charge

periodic calls from inspections and operating life analysis to con-tractual full maintenance.

Parts and rebuildingSaalasti servicemen are the most experienced in rebuilding wear parts. We offer rebuilding of all wear parts for our products, either on site or at our own workshop, where parts are always rebuilt to the original dimensions and toler-ances of a new part. For example, the rebuilding of a dewatering press typically includes resurfac-ing the press rolls, re-welding the feed chutes and screws, and replacing wear parts. For chip-

pers and crushers, we rebuild the rotors, crusher bars and grates and replace wear parts. Saalasti also has part-swapping programs that ensure very short delivery times. And if rebuilding is no more possible Saalasti has all wear and spare parts ready for dispatch from its home base in Finland and its consignees’ storages abroad.

lay-out planning services to op-timize feeding, logistics and raw material storage to ensure that the future plant will be an economic success.

MaintenancePreventive maintenance based on measurements taken during an In-Service Inspection makes it possible for us to be almost 100% successful in predicting incipient faults and avoiding unexpected down time. Should any equipment failure nevertheless occur, we are usually able to immediately dispatch help with the necessary spare parts.

Our skilled service personnel will quickly and cost-efficiently put the equipment back into operat-ing condition. The most wear and spare parts for our equipment are always held in stock at Saalasti’s

main warehouse in Espoo, Finland. A variety of wear and spare parts packages are also available for dif-ferent operation circumstances.

In-Service InspectionAn in-Service Inspection involves taking measurements, check-ing the condition and thereafter adjusting of the equipment to opti-mize performance. The In-Service Inspection for example of a bark press is recorded in a written in-spection report that includes over 100 items to give detailed infor-mation on where maintenance and adjustments is required.

Contractual maintenanceTo complement In-Service Inspec-tions, we offer contractual mainte-nance with different levels of con-tent. We are well prepared to offer co-operative maintenance service that best meets each client’s needs and is customized to meet local conditions. For bark presses, for example, we offer semi-annual and/or annual in-service inspec-tions at fixed or quoted rates. The scope of service can range from

Our aim is a satisfied customer for the service life of our products. That time is measured in decades. We start serving the customer already before a sale. Afterwards, we continue by

cooperating in operation and maintenance.

Rebuilding wear parts by welding is a cost effective way to compensate for wear. Saalasti has extensive experience about hard facing metallurgy.

Even though Saalasti has a very good track record in in predicting the service life of the main components and avoiding unexpected breakdowns by combining the data recorded during an In-Service Inspection and Saalasti’s ample databank info, it is reassuring to know that Saalasti has all parts – and including the main components – in stock at all times.

components are made to process industry standards, which ensure great availability in demanding conditions.

Many of the standard com-ponents, as well as all wear and spare parts, are available straight from our own stock. As a safety feature, the crusher is equipped with shear pins that break and release the anvil and the grate if large pieces of metal or rock enter the machine, overloading it.

DeliveriesWe have delivered horizontal-feed chipper-crushers to Finland, Sweden, Poland, France, Spain, Scotland, Chile and Brazil.

Saalasti ChipperSaalasti FeederHorizontal feed chipper-crusher

A versatile crusher for different needsThe Saalasti Chipper H is suitable for power plants, biomass termi-nals and other high-volume appli-cations where correct particle size and reliable operation are a neces-sity. To match its name -chipper-crusher- the machine is equipped with a Multitool™ rotor with differ-ent chipper blades or cutter bars for different types of biomass. This is an important asset in the long run, as plants do not usually proc-ess the same materials throughout

ConstructionThe feeding unit of the crusher compresses the biomass and then forwards it, in a controlled man-ner, to be processed by the rotor. The rotor is equipped with cutter bars that are suitable for the par-ticular raw material and capable of processing it to the required particle size.

Both the length of the biomass feeder and the wall height in the loading area are adjustable. In ad-dition, the feeder can be tunnelled in different ways according to the noise and dust control require-ments.

Maintenance is easy and easily predictable, with access to the most important maintenance items available at the press of a button. All crusher components are designed by Saalasti and manufactured by experienced Finnish subcontractors. Standard

The rotor is of solid steel construction with easily replaceable chipper blades for the cost-efficient, high-capacity chipping of roundwood or with robust cutter bars to process even material like stumps.

The Saalasti horizontal-feed chipper comes ready assembled, with the service platforms included. This ensures short installation times at customers’ premises.

their operating life. Typical raw materials are logs, wood from thin-ning, loose or bundled slash, tree tops and stumps, and wood waste. Moreover, the particle size can be changed at any time from P100 down to P32, to meet the custom-er’s changing needs. More capac-ity can be provided by increasing the motor power.

Working togetherWe work together with the cus-tomer, starting with a needs assessment and layout planning.

Naturally, we are also happy to help with overall and logistic planning, using our solid experi-ence. We design reliable biomass processing systems with safe and smooth truck traffic and loading with minimum waiting times.

Scope of deliveryThe chipper usually comes with a robust biomass belt conveyor feeder, equipped with a metal de-tector and capable of withstanding the load of big logs being dropped onto it. On request, we can sup-ply an entire biomass processing system including also the outfeed conveyors, shelter and overhead crane, lubricating equipment, mo-tors, power and automation, and dust control system. The entire crusher system is installed above ground, with no water or sewage issues to think about, which helps to keep the facility clean.

The Multitool rotor makes it possible without the rotor change to use different blades or cutter bars. This ensures the correct particle size and capacity regardless of the material.

In 2001, Saalasti delivered its first horizontal-feed chipper-crusher to process baled residues at the Alholmens Kraft power plant in Pietarsaari, Finland. This Saalasti Chipper H was the world’s

first ever high-capacity stationary chipper. Because of the high capacity, the equipment was powered by the power plant itself, instead of diesel fuel. And containing just a few easily replaceable wear parts, the machine produced the most affordable hog fuel on the market. This was a good starting point for us to expand our range of plant site located fixed horizontal-feed chippers.

crusher was installed in front of the existing horizontal-feed crusher to separate sand from stumps before they are processed, stored and fed into the boiler. The system al-lows pre-crushing and de-sanding of stumps while at the same time loading stemwood onto the con-veyor between the two stations, to be processed in the main crusher together with the cleaned stumps.

ConstructionA pre-crusher replacing a regu-lar feeding unit consists of two rotors that are capable of effec-tively processing stumps before final crushing. It also decreases the amount of sand entering the main crusher, significantly reduc-ing crusher wear. The separate Saalasti PreCrush consists of a coarse crushing unit followed by screening in multiple steps. This ensures that soil is separated

before final crushing, minimizing the amount of valuable biomass ending up in the reject. Moreover, the system is energy-efficient and dust-free.

DeliveriesWe have delivered stump crush-ers with a pre-crusher to Finland, Spain and Scotland. The first separate Saalasti PreCrush was delivered to France. Saalasti Feeder can handle big logs. The

biggest logs processed by the pictured feeder, in France, are 900 mm in diameter. The system is used for simultaneous processing of stemwood and stumps.

Split stumps ready for processing. Root tips can be more than a meter apart.

Stump crusherStumps and loose forest residues are irregular in shape and form high piles on the feeder, with a lot of empty space inside and cannot be effectively fed into a regular crusher. The Saalasti horizontal-feed crusher is available with an optional pre-crusher.

The entire piece of equipment can be made up to 2.4 m wide to allow two trucks to feed in large quantities of stump material and

loose forest residues simultane-ously. The Saalasti Crush is truly a high-capacity crusher for process-ing stumps, while being versatile to be used to process any other tree-derived raw material.

A separate pre-crusherFine sand stuck to stumps ends up in the flue gases and starts to cause wear on the power plant boiler, while coarse sand causes similar damage to other equip-ment in the system. Up to 15 % of the weight of stumps can be sand and gravel, which is why some power plants require a sand con-trol system in order to use stumps as raw material. As a response to this challenge, Saalasti delivered the first separate pre-crusher in 2011, to a customer in France who had acquired a Saalasti Crush 1218 H horizontal-feed crusher the year before. The pre-

Pre-crushed stumps on their way to an SC1218H feeder and a boiler. Most of the soil has been separated, which reduces system wear.

In the 2000s, stumps started to gain more and more ground in the production of bioenergy. Embracing the challenges of processing piles of stump-derived material and unsliced stumps,

Saalasti was the first in the world to introduce a stump crusher equipped with a pre-crusher. The separate pre-crushing and sand control unit that followed was also the first of its kind in the world.

Typical installation with storage and truck-loading facilities.

With Saalasti Crush 1212 H and 630 kW, it is possible to easily process some 200 000 tonnes per year. Often, the processing stations are fed from two sources at the same time. Here, the truck has loaded sliced stumps, and the front-end loader is feeding in pre-crushed biomass. Saalasti Crush 1224 H is processing this all.

Saalasti CutterVertical-feed, high-capacity crusher

The machine comes with a Multi-tool™ rotor that can be equipped with chipper bars for energy-efficient cutting of pure bio-mass, reversible bars for maximum ease of maintenance, or crusher bars for processing biomass mixed with large quantities of rock and sand. Depending on the applica-tion, the bars are arranged indi-vidually, stepwise or in rows.

The machine includes safety features to minimize damage in case of large pieces of metal or rock are fed in. As the machines handle large tonnage each hour, the safety features have been designed to allow fast re-settings.

Like all Saalasti machines also Saalasti Cutter machines are

A Saalasti Cutter 1212 V has in this application replaced a drum chipper that exploded and sent heavy metal parts flying through walls.

When continuous 24-h operation is necessary, a twin installation with a flip-flop gate enables servicing while the other machine operates.

Most often, the single Saalasti Cutter V machines are operating alone and far away from a control rooms. The high reliability and limited tool change over down time makes the need for a stand-by unit unnecessary.

ConstructionSaalasti Cutter V is the most versatile of Saalasti’s vertical-feed biomass processors. It combines an extremely high capacity and a large variety of options for config-uring machine operation.

delivered as fully assembled units for fast on-site installations.

Special expertiseSaalasti is paying special at-tention to the type of processed material to achieve results in terms of the required particles size and shape distribution. The Easy Release processing technol-ogy developed by Saalasti lets the material out in correct particle and avoids it becoming fuzzy or excessively ground.

This ensures that, even with the most demanding raw mate-rial, the processed particles retain their clear shape, facilitating an easy transfer of material on the conveyors and into the boiler.

MaintenanceMaintenance is even faster than with Saalasti’s smaller all-purpose crushers. In Saalasti Cutter V models, the hydraulic maintenance aid system has been expanded to cover all main components. In addition, the these models feature a number of special add-on solu-tions like a fast stop brake to keep maintenance time at a minimum.

DeliveriesWe have delivered Saalasti Cutter V machines to Spain, Portugal, Chile, Malaysia and China.

Early in the 2000s, Saalasti started to explore the possibilities of using vertical-feed crushers for processing eucalyptus bark. It soon became clear that eucalyptus requires a specifically de-

signed machine, as a regular crusher would not deliver optimum performance. The biggest Saalasti Cut-ter V models can process all the bark from one debarking line without screening.

Saalasti CrushVertical-feed all-purpose crusher

ApplicationsSaalasti Crush V is a real universal crusher, that in many countries, has become an industry standard. It is used at paper and pulp mill woodrooms, sawmills and power plants. Saalasti Crush V combines reliability, compact size, with all safety features and great perform-ance at affordable pricing, where the particle size can be chosen from the wide range of P100–P32, and the smallest models can process material flows containing occasional large logs.

ConstructionSaalasti Crush V is as strongly built as its H- and V-series big brothers. It is certainly the most robust crusher of its size. It has a simple construction with only one moving part, a rotor machined from solid steel. Many machine components are identical or similar to those used in the bigger crushers. Components are either specifically designed by Saalasti or are the best prefabricated com-ponents available in the market to ensure superior reliability.

All-purpose Saalasti crushers have all the same features for safe operation and damage con-trol as the more expensive H- and V-series models. All safety-related incidents are confined inside of the machine’s frame, with no risk of any raw material, components or foreign objects flying out under any circumstances while the ma-chine is operating.

MaintenanceThe maintenance of V crush-ers is designed to be easy and straightforward. All every-day maintenance items are easily ac-cessible, while the less frequent maintenance tasks have hydrauli-cally assisted access. There are only two items with actual main-tenance needs: the crusher bars and the counter cutters. Other components are made of wear-resistant special steel, allowing rebuilding through hardfacing for long replacement intervals.

DeliveriesWe have delivered more than a hundred all-purpose crushers around the world.

Operating a Saalasti Crush V means minimal operator attention. A well-designed installation assists in clean housekeeping and makes service work easy.

Saalasti Crush V is the most popular heavy-duty, all-purpose crusher ever. The compact machine is easy to transport and install as a complete unit. These 0909 size units are ready to be delivered to Poland.

In warm climates, the crushers are often installed outdoors. This machine processes bark from a medium-sized debarking line combined with wood waste originating from external sources.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Saalasti became aware of the lack of a suitable crusher for processing woodroom bark flows prior to bark press dewatering. The outcome was a new machine combining the simplicity of an American rotor crusher with new features, developed by Saalasti, for effective machine opera-

tion and maintenance. That was the first step in the development of the Saalasti’s range of crushers, chippers and grinders that are available today.

PerformanceThe output particle size can be chosen from P32 down to P12. The raw material may contain oc-casional chips or pieces of wood of the size P200–P300.

MaintenanceSpecial attention has been paid to easy maintenance. All wear parts can be replaced using small pneumatic or hammering tools. This allows simple replacement of the crusher bars, counter cutters and grate wear plate.

DeliveriesWe have delivered Saalasti Grinder V units to Spanish and Finnish customers.

Saalasti ScreensAs auxiliary equipment for Saalasti biomass processing systems, we supply disc screens for oversize screening and vibrat-ing screens for separating sand in stump pre-crushing. In addition, step screens are available for separating sand and excessively fine material before crushing.

Saalasti’s step screen is suit-able for applications where the reject may contain small quanti-ties of fine material. In some

applications, step screens can be effective in preventing long sticks from ending up in the accepted fraction. A disc screen is a smart choice when fine material needs to be separated as completely as possible, while occasional over-size pieces in the accept are not a problem. Disc screens are also ideal for installation sites where heights are limited.

Step screens are suitable for processing bark with large quan-tities of sand, as the only parts prone to wear are the screen plate blocks, which are inexpensive and easy to replace. By using different screen plate blocks, it is possible to change the particle size of the accepted fraction. A step screen makes it possible to feed long pieces of wood into a vertical-feed crusher. Moreover, it makes the material flow more consistent, levelling out peak loads on the crusher.

DeliveriesWe have delivered screens to France, Portugal, Belgium, South Africa, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Saalasti Grinder A for primary milling Saalasti Grinder is intended for applications where absolute op-erating reliability and a relatively small particle size is needed, but where an absolutely uniform par-ticle size distribution is not neces-sary. Typical applications include co-firing for pulverized coal boilers and raw materials for pellets, py-rolysis or gasification processes. The reliability of Saalasti Grinder A comes to the foreground espe-cially in power plant applications.

PerformanceSaalasti Grinder A can process very wet materials, for example spruce bark with a lot of snow or the chips at the very bottom of a pile, without clogging.

Saalasti Grinder 0906 V in a Spanish pellet plant. Separate screens are notused; instead, the whole material flowis put directly through the machine andthen led to the drying drum.

Saalasti Grinder models are designed to mill and grind preprocessed materials containing sand, stones or other impurities. We also supply the necessary screens for separating sand or

the oversize fraction.

The positive screw feeding axially into the rotor’s end further adds to reliability.

As the operation of the machine is not based on sharp knives, it is not sensitive to sand. It even toler-ates stones of reasonable size. By adding heat to the milling process, it can also be used to aid in drying of the material. The output particle size can be controlled over the range of P12–P16 according to the application.

The input material must be pre-crushed to size P100 or smaller.

DeliveriesWe have delivered Saalasti Grinder A machines to Finnish customers.

Saalasti Grinder V for fine crushingSaalasti Grinder V differs from Saalasti Grinder A in that it can only process relatively dry mate-rial. On the other hand, Saalasti Grinder V is even more energy ef-ficient and as insensitive to metal and other impurities, which makes it a perfect choice for a pre-crush-er ahead of the drying drum in pellet production or for processing hog fuel for gasification plants. As the feed material is usually chipped in the forest by using a variety of equipment, it is typically neither homogeneous nor clean.

For all types of wet biomassSaalasti Press machines are suitable for dewatering practically any wet for-est-based biomass. In North America, for example, it is common to press mixtures of bark and waste chips or

The right press for each and every needAs a general rule, the Saalasti Press 1620 models have a longer drum and are intended for wet materials. The 1615 models have a shorter drum and are suit-able for less moisture containing materials. The SP1615M model is specifically designed for the challenging eucalyptus bark and is also well suited, for example, to process the North American Cedar bark. In addition, we offer special part sets to be able to process sandy and high-wear bark or chemically aggressive bark stored in a outdoor piles.

Many presses are installed in existing, often cramped facilities. The best results can be achieved when Saalasti can participate in layout planning and any necessary conveyor alterations to make sure the installation works.

Machines are delivered fully assembled and tested, and can be placed on their foundations directly from the truck. Saalasti’s skilled technicians can take care of that as well train the customer’s operating and service personnel.

Saalasti PressThe reliable bark press

Collaborative careWe offer maintenance services ranging from service and in-spection calls to contractual full maintenance. Even though the service intervals of our machines are regularly measured in years, we hold a stock of commonly required parts on different con-tinents. Major maintenance is required at intervals of about five to ten years, during which time the regularly inspected and adjusted machine is absolutely reliable. The service life of Saalasti Press remains to be seen, as the oldest ones have now been used for some 25 years.

Our maintenance services cover all continents. This machine is being serviced in South America.

The Saalasti story of biomass processing, dating back to the late 1970s, started with dewatering wet bark into dry fuel by mechanical pressing. Over the years, the press has been continually

developed to make it the very good investment it is today. As a result, we have delivered more than 160 bark presses around the world, and Saalasti Press has become an industry standard for bark pressing.

sometimes primary sludge instead of just bark. We have pressed biomass from almost every tree species suitable for industrial use.

The right way to press biomassWe have developed a self-adjust-ing, multiple-press method for op-timal pressing of heterogeneous materials such as bark. Involving alternate pressing and mixing sequences, it enables even the most demanding materials to be dewatered as completely as pos-sible. Similarly, bark that is partly frozen can be energy-efficiently pre-heated in using heating se-quences.
