The multiSUB series of Horizontal Gel Units offers the most versatile solution for DNAand RNA agarose gel electrophoresis currently available. All five units offer an unsurpassedcombination of economy of gel and buffer volume, with gel size and sample number versatility. Gel size

and sample number requirements can be exactly matched in each unit, with the option of additional gel

tray sizes. This eliminates the need for multiple gel tanks for changes in gel size or application.

All units feature removable UV transparent trays. For optimum value and versatility, systems are

available with one, two or three tray options (dependent on model). Easy to use, leak proof ‘plug and go’

gel casting dams are included as standard to allow gels to be rapidly cast whilst the multiSUB unit is in

use for gel running. With no indentations or casting gate grooves in the tray to interfere with sample

progression, traditional tape casting can be used, should this be preferred.Although lid connectors are compatible with most major power supplies, adapters are available toprovide complete compatibility.

multiSUB Mini is designed for lowto medium numbers of samples.The small gel size maximises runeconomy but does not compromiseversatility as two tray options areavailable – 7 x 7cm and 7 x 10cm, andcombs ranging from preparative up to 16samples. Designed for rapid screening of verylarge numbers of Clonal or PCRsamples, multiSUB Screenhorizontal gel unit has a 672maximum sample capacity per gel.This allows loading and analysis of exactlyseven 96 well format micro titre plates.

The large gel run length of 32cm also allowsresolution of samples over a long distancefor separation of complex sample bandssuch as in restriction fragment analysis.

The unit is available with a full length tray orwith other tray length options of 16 or 24cmso that the user’s exact requirements canbe matched. miniRapide is a completely selfcontained system designed forquick checks of samples. Gelcasting, running and analysis are allperformed in the same ultracompact unit withbuffer and gelvolumes havebeen kept to aminimum. The single cell gel electrophoresis assay(also known as the Comet assay) is asimple, rapid and sensitive technique foranalysing and quantifying DNA damagein individual mammalian (and to someextent prokaryotic) cells. COMET assaytanks are specifically designed to minimiseexposure to light and reduce background DNAdamage. Previously, units designed for standardelectrophoresis have been used which with theirclear construction have not offered an easy touse system.

Constructed from Ebony acrylic to prevent UVdegradation, the slides sit on a cooling platformwhich can be connected to a water supply orchiller for active temperature control and cooling.

Typical Applications

These UV Sterilisation Cabinets provide aconvenient area for setting up PCR reactions ina nucleic acid free environment thus limitingPCR reaction contamination.

Acting effectively as a low cost alternative to a clean room,the powerful UV lights on each cabinet denatures nucleicacids in 5 to 30 minutes making them unsuitable foramplification. The cabinets incorporate safety features toprevent user-exposure to UV light.

The UV lights are timer controlled and there are safetyswitches on the cabinet doors which power off the UVlights when opened. The units’ white light provide excellentvisibility when working within the cabinet.

Constructed from 10mm acrylic, the cabinets also act asefficient shields from beta radioactive emissions and cantherefore be safely used with isotopes such as 32P.

Two models are available, Maxi as shown adjacent, and anew Mini Cabinet for limited budget and bench space.

A unique single piece pressure frame offers the option ofrapid single screw per side or new screw free set up.Even pressure and buffer contact across the platesresults in even sample migration and efficient heatremoval from the gel. Glass plates are 2mm thick toreduce breakage.

A simple to use cooling pack system ensures enhancedresolution without costly and time consuming additionalequipment. No chiller, tap or obstructing connectingleads are required. The cooling pack is simply pre-chilledin a freezer and placed in the gel tank. Additionally, theuse of cooling packs reduces buffer volume.

While most vertical gel units can run only one or twogels, omniPAGE Mini units can run one, two or up to fourgels at any time using a triple glass plate sandwich.

The omniPAGE range of Vertical Gel Units combines ease of use with high resolutionseparations. Three sizes, Mini 10 x 10cm, Mini Wide 20 x 10cm and Maxi 20 x 20cm, share a host ofcommon features including a guaranteed leak proof seal required for trouble free, rapid anduncomplicated gel casting. Utilising a built in gel running module eliminates time consuming transfer ofglass plates during casting, a process which can cause gel damage and misalignment. Glass plateswith permanently bonded spacers guarantee perfect spacer alignment. The glass plate sandwich issimply inserted between pressure bars and sealed using either the NEW sliding gates system (as shownadjacent) or a minimum of screws tightened – only one screw per side for omniPAGE Mini. This ensuresfast set up times while even pressure bars and ultra soft seals guarantee leak proof casting. Once thegel has polymerised, the gel running module is simply inserted into the gel tank for electrophoresis.

The unit incorporatesa sealing system which is compatible with allmajor types of 8 x 10cm and 10 x 10cm precast gel.

Gel casting and running utilisethe same insert, no transfer ofglass plates during gel casting is necessary.The insert contains the option of slidingclamps or just one screw per clamping barside (both supplied), allowing very rapid set upof both hand cast and precast gels. Ultra softsilicone seals and pressure bars whichsurround the glass plates guarantee leak proofgel casting. 2mm thick glass plates minimisebreakage and have bonded spacers forconvenience.

colorimetric protein stainsDyeHard is a new Coomassie Blue polymer stain whose sensitivity is comparable to silver stain. Its high protein-bindingaffinity and specificity allows detection of as little as 3ng protein with minimal background. Staining with DyeHard isfaster and more convenient than standard Coomassie, since no destain is required. DyeHard is also cost-effective,odourless and easy to dispose within the laboratory.

fluorescent protein stainsThese three new fluorescent stains for protein detection that are both pvreversible and morve sensitive than many of theprotein stains currently on the market. Available in blue, green and red colours as BCblue, BCgreen and BCred, theseprotein stains can detect a minimum vetre of gel. Staining and destaining times are comparable to those required forstandard Coomassie and SYPRO Ruby, while each gel may be visualised using a UV transilluminator and visible lightfilter. Each stain’s metal chelate composition guarantees stability without loss of sensitivity for at least 1 year if storedwithin the refrigerator.

The omniPAGE-DGGE denaturinggradient gel electrophoresis unit can runtwo 20 x 20cm polyacrylamide gels for thedetection of single base changes andpolymorphisms in cloned or amplified DNAfragments. It is ideal for the study ofmutations and DNA polymorphisms criticalin disease. This system is primarily forparallel denaturing gradientelectrophoresis.

The full range of "DGGE" analysis can beperformed in this unit. DuringDenaturing Gradient GelElectrophoresis, "DGGE", the buffer inthe unit is heated using a 400-wattheater and the temperature controlledby an external temperature controlconnected to an internal sensor. Thisallows the gel temperature to be set to themelting temperature (Tm) of the amplifiedDNA polymorphism mutation of interest.

The temperature can be adjusted in 1°Cincrements up to a maximum temperature of 70°C, so thefull range of DGGE analysis can be performed in this unit.The unit contains all the features of the successful

omniPAGE series and uses the same user-friendly gelcasting system. OmniPAGE-DGGE uses all combs andaccessories of omniPAGE Maxi, shown on page 18.

This system has been designedto allow the full range of IEF flatbed electrophoresis techniques.These include wick basedelectrophoresis, precast horizontal IEF gelelectrophoresis, hand cast horizontal IEFGel electrophoresis and Iso Electricfocusing using IEF strips. The unitincludes enhanced cooling over a largeplatform which offers increased stripcapacity and gel area.

Uniform cooling of the platform isachieved using a large ceramic platewhich can be connected to any standardchiller via quick fit connectors forenhanced gel or strip cooling.

The omniPAGE VS30 unit has beendesigned to provide a convenient unit forthe second stage of 2-D electrophoresis.

The 26cm active gel width provides a large gelarea to resolve large IEF strips. In combinationwith the IEF system above, this offers a completepackage for 2-D electrophoresis. The unit utilisesthe omniPAGE advanced design features toprovide convenient ease of use with highresolution separations.

Designed primarily for wet electroblotting ofproteins, EBLOT Electroblotters offer acombination of increased capacity witheconomy saving features. Both units, Mini 10 x10cm and Maxi 20 x 20cm, have increased capacityover standard systems with up to five gel blotcassettes utilised at any one time. This is especiallyuseful in high throughput laboratories.

A uniform electric field is provided by a high intensitycoiled electrode and ensures uniform transfer acrossthe blot surface. The cassette’s open architectureensures the maximum blot area allows direct transferof current. Its rigid construction ensures contactbetween the gel and membrane is retainedthroughout the blot and an even pressure ismaintained. These units are compatible with magneticstirrers to aid heat dispersal and prevent pH drifts inthe buffer due to incomplete buffer mixing. Eachsystem includes a cooling pack to further enhancetransfer efficiency by removing excess heat. This alsosaves on buffer for added economy.

These Semi Dry Blotters offer rapidtransfer times for DNA, RNA and proteinblotting - typically 15 to 30 minutes. Allunits can be used for all types of blotting:western, southern and northern via uncomplicated buffer and set up procedures and are compatible with gelthicknesses from 0.25 up to 10mm without the need foradditional equipment. Each unit is compatible with theirrespective omniPAGE vertical gel system.

Semi Dry Blotting has the added benefit of economictransfers due to very low buffer volumes – typically only afew millilitres of buffer are required per transfer. These Semi-Dry Blotters utilise a screw down lid, which secures the blotsandwich and allows complete control of pressure ensuringeven transfer. The electrodes, comprising platinum coatedanode and stainless steel cathode, will exhibit practically nocorrosion and so provide many years of trouble free use.

Uniform heat dispersion across the blot sandwich ensuresstable transfer times and no heat induced sample loss ortransfer distortions. Being translucent, it allows viewing ofthe blot sandwich to ensure correct positioning andtransfer is occurring correctly. Electrode plates are fullyseparated to prevent arching or damage.

Available in powder sachet form, Towbin buffer Tris/Glycine base may be reconstituted to form 1 litre of1x workingsolution for wet and semi-dry transfer techniques. Simply mix 800ml of 1x working solution with 200ml methanolfor complete 1x Towbin buffer.

Western transfer buffer is available as a 25x concentrate. Mix with 1200ml distilled water to make 1x workingsolution.

Dot Blot and Slot Blot microfiltrationmanifolds are designed for DNA andRNA filter blot hybridisations andimmunological (Ag/Ab) screeningapplications. Machined from high densityacrylic, their precision lapped matingsurfaces and leak proof gasket ensuresuniform filter contact, so preventing lateraltransfer of samples – smudging – byensuring that a complete vacuum is formed.Assembly of the manifolds is simply byaligning the mating surfaces and tighteningthe stainless steel thumb screws. All Consort Maxi Series (EV200) Power Suppliesexcept the EV243 have four output terminals toallow four simultaneous runs. Model EV243 Minipower supply has a smaller footprint and three outputterminals. While the powerful microprocessor allowscomplex programming, the Manual mode permits thesetting of voltage, current, power and time for a routineelectrophoresis run. Parameters can be changedtemporarily without interrupting the run.

Programming - up to 9 different programs, each with9 steps, can be stored in the non-volatile memory forfuture recall.

Timer - can be set to automatically terminate the runand sound an alarm when the allocated time or volthours has elapsed.

Automatic cross-over - each model has constantvoltage, constant current and constant power capabilitieswith automatic cross-over while showing which parameteris kept constant.

Automatic recovery after mains failure - afterrestoration of power, the instrument will automaticallycontinue the run for the remaining time.

Data Transfer - optional data acquisition/control softwarefor PC is available to visualise and examine the stored rundetails, store and program the methods, add notes to the run,identify the unit, copy or delete programs in the unit's memory.

Safety precautions - the AC line is automaticallydisconnected from the high voltage transformer when aground leakage path is detected protecting the user frompotential shock. Other safety features include protectionagainst any overload including accidental short circuit ofthe output and voltage increases smoothly.

This Consort Mini power supply covers the idealvoltage range generally used with smallelectrophoresis units. Small enough to occupy verylittle bench space, it is portable and has a variety ofadditional features:-

With a drying area of 21 x 31 cm, theMidi Gel Dryer can dry six 10 x 10cmgels or a single larger gel. The Maxi GelDryer with a 35 x 45cm drying area candry twelve 10 x 10cm mini gelssimultaneously. Both unit’s microprocessorcontrols temperature and time, each parameterbeing displayed on its own LED display. The gelsare heated from the base plate while thevacuum removes the moisture from below to drythe gel homogeneously. microDOC is a simple, inexpensive and ultra compact gel documentationsystem. It contains a CCD digital camera with a superb resolution of14.7 mega pixels*. For added convenience, limited space andbudget requirements, microDOC can be used computer free. Theimage is viewed from a large 8" TFT colour liquid crystal display. Avariety of images can be captured from agarose and otherfluorescent gels, colorimetric gels, auto radiography film and blottingmembranes. The system is fitted with a 55mm ethidium bromide filterand has a safety switch to turn off the UV Transilluminator when the dooris opened. These gel staining / blotting boxes are available in 4 sizes and are the idealaccessory for incubating blots or staining gels. The two smaller sized boxes areavailable in packs of ten. The smallest box has dimensions of 9.1 x 6.6cm and acapacity for 3-5ml of solution.

This is ideal for incubating cut blot strips. The next box in the range holds 6-10mlof solution and is appropriate for mini gels and blots up to 11.7 x 8.9cm. Twolarger boxes, available in single packs, can be used for staining gels or incubatingblots up to 12 x 12cm or 20 x 16.5cm respectively.

The Denville 260D incorporates all the mostrequested features in a single affordablemicrocentrifuge. The 260D is the quietestcentrifuge in its class when used with either of its45° angle rotors. These 45° angle rotors acceptall types of 1.5ml and 2.2ml tubes, includingscrew-top and self-standing "skirted" tubes. Anew strip rotor accepts 0.2ml PCR 8-strips orstandard 1.5ml tubes. The CoolCube is designed to store samples safely on the lab bench withoutsample degradation caused by temperature increase or fluctuation. TheCoolCube maintains temperature at approximately 0°C for up to four hours.Simply place the CoolCube in a freezer overnight and it will be ready to use.

One side of the CoolCube can be used as a convenient PCR workstation for12 standard 1.5/2.0ml microtubes with one 96 well PCR plate, or with 12x0.2ml strips or 96x0.2ml tubes. The other side may be used to hold up to36 standard 1.5/2.0ml microtubes.

Digital dry baths are available in single and dualblock models, and comprise a comprehensiverange of interchangeable blocks. Each digitaldry bath is compact and easy-to-useInterchangeable quick-change blocks have rapidheat-up times and reproducible temperatureuniformity and accuracy, and may be used in avariety of applications, which include: restrictiondigestion, BUN, melting agar, coagulationstudies, hybridisation, Hot Start PCR® reactions and DNA denaturation. Eight models of Denville XL3000i™Pipettes cover all volumes from 0.1µl upto 10ml. A continuously adjustablevolumeter with digital readout allowssimple and accurate dispensing. Therobust construction along with the lowthermal coefficient of the body of eachXL3000i™ will prevent hand heataffecting sample measurements andreproducibility, even in prolonged usage.Being lighter than many other similarpipettes, they are even more comfortableto hold and operate for extended periods- even in the smallest hand. This featurewill also reduce the incidence of operatorfatigue and Repetitive Strain Injury.

The XL3000i™ requires minimalmaintenance. Its precise, self-lockingstainless steel micrometer accuratelyadjusts the stroke of the polished, acid-resistant stainless steel piston. Eachpiston is machined to very finetolerances which, in conjunction with itsself-lubricating O-ring and PTFE seal,minimises the need for attention. Using aseries of height adapters, the tip ejectorposition on the shaft is adjustable toallow the pipette’s use with virtually allbrands of tips. The user may also choosefrom either of the two supplied ejectorbutton styles to suit their preferredhandling position.

Each model is supplied with its ownindividual certificate of calibration, as aguarantee of the unit’s quality.

The cryogenic series of Tough-Tags™ are pre-cut labels designed for the labelling ofmicrocentrifuge tubes and vials for use atextremes of temperatures. These unique labelswill withstand conventional freezing andcryogenic liquid nitrogen storage down to -196˚C (for both vapour and liquid phasenitrogen). Additionally, they are chemicallyresistant and will withstand boiling water bathsat 100˚C and dry heat to 150˚C withoutcracking, peeling or degrading.

Cryo-Babies™ are 32.5 x 12.5mm in size andare designed for 1.5ml microtubes andstandard cryovials, while the larger Cryo-Tag™

labels are ideal for identifying test tubes,bottles, flasks, vials and freezer boxes.

Both Cryo-Babies™ & Cryo-Tags™ areavailable in laser- or inkjet-printable sheets forprocessing large numbers of sample labels.

Laser Cryo-Tags™ are ultra-flexiblepolyolefin labels with a solvent-resistantacrylic adhesive. They are chemically inertand adhere to all plastics, glass and metal.The labels will withstand boiling waterbaths at 100ºC and dry heat up to 150ºCwithout cracking, peeling or degrading.Cryo-Tags™ also withstand conventionaland cryogenic storage conditions (vapourand liquid phase nitrogen storage at -196ºC). They resist most detergents andoils, as well as many organic solvents andcaustic agents without peeling.

Cryo-Tags™ for laser printers are available in a widevariety of sizes for microtubes, cryo-tubes and othercryogenic containers and equipment. Now available in avariety of colours, Blue, Green, Orange, Red and Yellow,they are therefore ideal for colour coding samples.

Specially engineered labels for thermal extremes (-196˚C to +200˚C), Bake-Tag™

labels are designed to survive almost any treatment or storage environment onalmost any material found in the research and clinical laboratory, without dryingout, burning, melting, discolouring or peeling-off. These oven-safe marking labelswill withstand extreme temperature ranges both wet and dry. Bake Tags™ willwithstand conventional heat sterilising, autoclaving, cryogenic storage in liquidnitrogen and boiling water baths.

Self-adhesive IdentiTapes are designed toprovide the perfect solution to a widevariety of labelling requirements. Theyare oil-proof, waterproof and acidresistant tapes which will withstandtemperature extremes of -20°C to over+121°C. This variable speed Vortex Mixer combines fast, efficient mixing with minimalvibration. Unlike other vortex mixers using elliptical orbits, its true circular orbitfacilitates uniform sample-vortexing even at low speed. The CombiCup™

head, which is supplied as standard, accepts many different tubesizes, while the unique overmoulding technology used in itsmanufacture provides a sturdy plastic core with non-slip TPEthat fits optional heads for microplates, microtubes, PCR striptubes, 15ml and 50ml tubes and blood vials.

The unit may be used in ‘touch’ or continuous mode:‘touch’ mode being activated by simply depressing thesample head and then stopped by releasing the pressure.An optimised counter balance system minimises vibrationand movement of the unit during operation, whereas itslightweight construction and small footprint allows it to bereadily transported and used in areas where space is restricted. Theunit is also safe for use in temperature controlled environments, and may be used within acold room.

These hotplates, stirrers and hotplate-stirrers feature an exceptionally durable, chemically resistant, whiteceramic work surface. Their space-efficient design (20 x 23 cm footprint), makes them ideal for use oncrowded bench tops and inside cabinets.

Advanced microprocessor controls with convenient turn knobs allow quick, precise adjustment andmaintenance of speed and temperature. SafeCloner is a new tool for safe UV-freevisualisation of DNA gels stained withethidium bromide, SYBR Safe and SYBRgreen. SafeCloner’s special filter glassesand blue epi-LED illuminator allow theoperator to view DNA gels at greatercontrast and sensitivity than is possiblewith standard long wavelength UVtransilluminators. Blue epi-LEDillumination of gels is entirely harmless toDNA and operator alike, ensuring that theDNA within the gel remains free of UV-induced damage. Consequently, DNAfragments isolated from gels viewed usingSafeCloner have dramatically improvedcloning efficiency compared to DNAfragments eluted from UV-illuminatedgels.
