What are Bioplastics?
Biodegradable polymers with approved biodegradability
Polymers based on renewable raw materials
Most of the bioplastics are based on agricultural feedstocks
Many of the products are biodegradable / compostable

Developments
In the early 1950s,Amylomaize (>50% starch content corn) was successfully bred and commercial
bioplastics applications started to be explored.
In 2004, NEC developed a flame retardant plastic, polylactic acid, without using toxic chemicals such
as halogens and phosphorus compounds .
In 2005, Fujitsu became one of the first technology companies to make personal computer cases
from bioplastics, which are featured in theirFMV-BIBLO NB80K line.
In 2007 Braskem of Brazil announced it had developed a route to manufacture high density
polyethylene (HDPE) using ethylene derived from sugar cane.

Managing a carbon economy role of bioplastics
Compared with traditional plastics, their production results in the emission of less
carbon dioxide
Manufacturing bioplastics delivers a fossil fuel saving of between 25 and 68 per cent
compared with polyethylene
As it is possible to close the carbon loop by composting and energy recovery,
bioplastics make a positive contribution to climate protection

India
The annual consumption of plastics in India is about to reach 4kg/person/year, which is very small
compared to a world average of 24.5kg.
But with a population of 1.0 billion people the total demand for plastic in India is still around 4 million
tonnes and growing fast.
Plastic polybags have been banned in a number of states and cities in India, e.g. Haryana, Himachal
Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh, Ghaziabad and Noida in UttarPradesh.
Other states are also considering similar policies and this can be expected to stimulate interest in the
use of biodegradable polymers and recycling technologies.
Scientists at the Centre forPolymer Science & Engineering ofIIT-Delhi have been improving theircapacity to make biodegradable which is used extensively in the Indian packaging industry.
Scientists at the Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI), Thiruvananthapuram, have
developed an inexpensive method to develop biodegradable plastics

Future of Bioplastics
Existing Petrochemistry and refinery will accelerate use of green platform chemicals in
manufacturing bioplastics by natural integration
Consumer petro-plastics will continue to play good role in commodity market for their
cost benefit
Cheaper ways to transform renewables to monomer/plastics will be the way forward in
high volume market including automotive!
