BINGHAM HIGH SCHOOL DANCE COMPANY CONTRACT We are happy your student is considering a position on Dance Company at Bingham High School for the coming year. However, we feel that you and your student should be made aware of the requirements that must be met in order to occupy this position. The following requirements have been agreed upon for this organization. Please read carefully before consenting to your student’s participation. Dance Company is an ALL YEAR commitment including summer. Start date is Auditions and end date is the following year’s auditions.

    Purpose of the Organization

In this dance company course the students will gain an advanced and greater understanding of dance as an art form. This course focuses mainly on the art of modern dance, elements of dance (energy, space, and time), improvisational skills, technical mastery, the choreographic process, and mastering performance. Students have the opportunity to create their own dances, teach and work with their peers, learn from guest choreographers, and be a part of the creative process of putting on assemblies, half-time shows, and concerts. The material given is designed to help students improve overall in dance and provide performance opportunities. Be ready to dive into the world of movement, innovative thought, and boundless creativity.

    Membership Qualifications and Responsibilities

    1. Eligibility: Any student wishing to be considered for a Dance Company position must have a cumulative and quarterly

GPA of at least a 3.0. Students must show a 3.0 GPA or higher on third quarter’s grades of the try-out year, at the time of the try-outs. A No-Grade (NG) or F will not be accepted. A 3.0 GPA, no F’s, and no NG’s must be maintained each quarter to hold a position on the team. Failure to maintain these requirements will result in a quarterly probation period. While on probation, the student will be denied the opportunity to participate in Dance Company performances. Students must continue to dress for class and attend all practices and performances. At the end of the quarter, if grades still do not meet the requirements the student will be dismissed from the Company. Grades will be checked at each midterm to evaluate student progression.

    2. Respect: Students will be expected to give their very best efforts, respect, and full attention to the advisor/coach,

officers, professional guest choreographers/teachers, Bingham administration, and fellow students at all times. Students will also be expected to give 100% participation and enthusiasm in learning all new and different dance styles.

    3. School Attendance: Dance Company must maintain good school attendance and follow the Bingham High School

attendance policy. Absences in excess of 4 per class per quarter will result in probation. If students continue to miss school they will be dismissed from the company. If students miss school the day of a performance they will not be allowed to perform, unless excused by advisor/coach and/or doctors note is provided. Regular attendance will be monitored.

    4. Attendance at all practices, performances, fundraisers, and activities are mandatory: Only absences due to

medical excuses, family weddings/funerals, and school excused activities for missing performances, practices, etc. will be allowed and the advisor must be notified if student is ill. Vacations, trips, work, outside studio dance classes, family parties or traditions, etc. are not a part of excused absences. Please note that I cannot work around every family activity, party, and/or tradition. Parents: please plan vacations around Dance Company’s schedule. Christmas and other three-day school holidays may be used if Dance Company members do not miss any assigned practices, performances, fundraisers, and activities during that time. As needed, Saturday practices and/or extra practices may be scheduled during the year and especially during concert season. If practices and performances are missed the student’s participation grade will be affected, as well as performing at future events and participating in routines. If a student has more than 2 unexcused absences (all year one each semester) from practices, fundraisers, or activities, the student will be taken out of routines, put on probation, and/or lose membership on the company. If a student misses more than one performance the student will be taken out of routines, put on probation, and/or lose membership on the company.

    5. Attending outside studio dance classes and or other performing groups, sports teams, and clubs: I am okay with

students taking dance and participating in groups and/or organizations outside of Bingham as long as it does not conflict with the Dance Company schedule or affect the dancer’s ability to stay alert and in tune at all practices and/or performances. Students are not allowed to miss Dance Company practices, performances, fundraisers, activities, etc. for outside dance and other groups, especially during concert season and the month of April. Missing concert season practices for outside dance will lead to student dismissal from routines, concert, and/or membership on Dance Company. Dance Company will come first. Students participation in school excused activities such as SBO, choir, drama, band, orchestra, cheer, other sports, etc. will not result in/cause grade deductions if that activity has been cleared with both advisors/coaches. These students will be taken out of routines and performances if school excused activities interfere

  • 4

with certain practices and performances. Students taken out of routines because school excused activates will still learn and practice those dances even if they are not in them.

    6. Rehearsals: Distractions such as visitors and cell phones are not allowed. Visitors will be kicked out and cell phones

will be taken away. Members are expected to refrain from private conversations while rehearsals are being conducted. Dance Company members are expected to return from breaks on time. Make sure that snack and beverage trash is not left in the studio, auditorium, or practice areas. Tentative Dance Company rehearsals are posted later in contract.

    7. Performances: Every Dance Company member shall attend every performance, whether or not they are performing:

including concerts, half times, assemblies, fundraisers, etc. Members who have more than one unexcused absence from a performance may be put on probation or lose their membership on Dance Company. Each Dance Company member must be present to all class periods the day of the performance in order to perform at the event.

    8. Alternates: All members may be required to audition for each performing dance. The advisor/coach, choreographers,

guest choreographers, and officers will judge the audition for each dance. Performers will be selected based on knowledge of the routine, performance qualities, showmanship, overall attitude, technique, grades, and attendance. Once the dancers are selected they will always perform in that routine unless a performer becomes injured, ill, or breaks rules in the contract. At that time all understudies may challenge to fill this position. All interested understudies will then perform this routine for advisor/coach, choreographers, and guest choreographers when deemed necessary. All understudies are required to actively participate during rehearsals in order to fill an open position. The advisor will have the authority to select an understudy to take the place of a member, if that member has not been upholding the contract.

    9. Appearance: Dance Company members must maintain their appearance and follow the Jordan School District and

Bingham High’s Dress Code. If a student has 2 violations against dress code they will be put on probation. If they receive 2 more violations they will be asked to step down from the team. Being a part of Dance Company, students are not only representing themselves, but the Dance Company/Dance Dept programs, and Bingham High School. No crude behavior will be tolerated. Ex: streaking, smoking, drinking, use of drugs, inappropriate kissing games or sexual-related activities, de-pantsing or removal of others clothing, bullying and being rude to fellow teammates or fellow students at Bingham, or wearing dance attire inappropriately. Involvement in such activities will result in immediate dismissal from the team. No refunds of fees previously paid will be given. *There will be no probationary period!

    10. Work: We realize that some students must maintain employment to participate in this organization, but their first

obligation must be to Dance Company. Practices and performances may not be missed because of work. If they are missed the student’s participation grade will be affected, as well as participating in future performances and routines.

    11. The students occupying a Dance Company position will be required to attend all MANDATORY summer

practices and summer camp: A summer practice schedule is included in this packet. Please go over the schedule and plan accordingly. No excuses for missing summer practices will be accepted, i.e. vacations, three day trips, family reunions, pioneer treks, youth conference, music tours, vacations already paid for, etc. If you know you cannot meet the summer practice schedule and/or attend the required performances and practices throughout the entire Dance Company schedule, please reconsider trying out. Please do not put the advisor/coach or administration in the position of having to ask you to leave your position.

    12. Expectations: If a Dance Company member is not performing up to the expectations of advisor/coach because of a poor

attitude or lack of effort, they will be taken out of dance routines, a fellow Dance Company member will replace them in performance routines, and/or the member will be disqualified from the company.

    13. Injuries: If a student becomes injured the advisor/coach needs to have a doctor’s note in hand. This note needs to

include a diagnosis, expected recovery time, and when the student will be back practicing at 100% in order to sit out at practices, performances, etc. Otherwise, the student will be expected to practice and perform at 100%. Remember, injured students are expected to attend practices and performances, support their team, and, depending on the severity of the injury, mark routines when able. If a student is ill they are still required to come to practice and watch. If they are too sick to sit and watch, they must get a doctor’s note as well.

    14. Infractions: Students will be given infractions for being tardy, not dressed in appropriate dance attire, and poor attitude

or lack of effort. Each infraction results in point deductions on students participation grade. For every 4th infraction student receives they will be required to complete a 1-mile run. Students who miss class/rehearsal time/fundraisers etc. will complete a 1-mile run. Students who miss a performance will complete a 2-mile run. Student’s loose points for every infraction and class/rehearsal time/fundraisers/performances missed. Students will be required to complete their miles during running periods at which time the cycle starts over. These dates will be determined as needed. When students complete their miles they will earn back half their points. Students who do not make up the miles between running periods will be taken out of the next Dance Company performance and or routines. They will also forfeit receiving those points.

Fundraisers: are available through out the year to help students earn money. We will also consider doing more if parents would like to take the initiative to sponsor them. All fundraisers must have pre-approval by the principal and all money must go through the financial secretary of Bingham High School. All members are required to participate in all fundraisers that help finance the Dance Company program. If fundraising requirements are not met, members are required to pay the remaining individual balance out of pocket. If, by the end of the year, you have extra money from fundraisers, this money will not roll over to the next year or be refunded. Extra money earned on fundraisers will remain in the account to help build the program and costume inventory. The district will not allow us to refund money that has been fundraised. These fundraisers help with:

! Guest choreographers, master classes, dance festivals, and workshops ! Concert costs: lights, gels, marley floor and tape, costumes, costume rentals, props, repairs, publicity, programs, posters,

tickets, concessions, and cash box supervisor ! Concert video, music editing, and slide show ! Team dinners, activities, unity workshops, banquet, and formal ! Team sweats and gifts through out the year (including support gifts for other programs) ! To help students pay for fees

All Dance Company fees must be paid in the main office to the financial secretary. All checks must be made out to Bingham High School No money is to be collected by advisor/coach. Once paid students must bring or leave receipts in coaches box to ensure they get credit. As coaches we are not allowed to look into students personal account, therefore the only way for us to track what has been paid is by receipts given.

    Transportation

Dance Company members take a bus to all activities, unless otherwise specified. When buses are provided, Dance Company will be expected to ride and return on the team bus.

    BHS Dance Company Selection Process

The candidates will audition in front of a panel of judges approved by the advisor/coach including the advisor/coach. These judges will make a selection based on a point system and break in scores. They do not go into auditions with a specific number in mind. They go into auditions looking for anyone who has potential and creativity. If dancers score high enough and place above the cut off they deserve a chance and will get a chance. Numbers of Dance Company members in years past have ranged anywhere from 20 – 34. Parent/Student must be in attendance at parent meeting. Students trying out must be at both workshop classes. (Unless there is a conflict that has been approved by the judges and coach/advisor. A video audition will be put in place of the days missed. Video Auditions will also be considered after applicants who were in attendance at both workshops.) Both dance workshops are closed to parents and public. No part of the judge or teacher evaluations will be open to parent/guardian or student inspection for any reason. Many things will be considered in the judging process Include:

! Eligibility: GPA 3.0 or higher, no NG’s, no F’s ! 3 teacher evaluations: One dance teacher and two academic teachers (ex: English, math, history, science etc.) ! Technique, jazz/hip-hop combo, modern/contemporary combo, performance skills ! Appearance ! Attitude and dedication in other dance classes at Bingham such as Dance 1, Dance 2, Dance 3, Social Ballroom 1 & 2,

Hip Hop, and Aerobics Clothing requirements for audition include:

" Dance attire " Dance shoes or bare feet " Hair pulled away from face " No Jewelry, gum, or cell phones " Former members are not allowed to wear previous team attire. " Former members auditioning for a second or third year position must audition each year. Membership is not guaranteed

and all candidates are on equal standing during the course of the audition.

DANCE COMPANY OFFICERS Those candidates interested in being considered for an officer must be a senior the next school year and a returning member. They must submit a resume and letter of intent with their tryout packet. Each candidate’s resume should include: A Dance Company objective for the next school year, work experience, academic accomplishments, leadership qualities, and any dance, choreography, or performance experience. The letter of intent should be written to next year’s Dance Company addressing why they would like to be an officer, what they see themselves helping accomplish for the next school year, and their top two choices for what position they would like to hold.

  • 8

Each candidate will read their letter to the company, after which each company member will provide their recommendation for officers. The Dance Company advisor/coach and judges will interview each candidate. After evaluating both the recommendations from the company members and the advisor/coach/judges interviews, the best candidate will be chosen for each position. There will be three to five positions open for officers. Positions consist of president, vice president, secretary, performance coordinator, historian, activities chair, fundraising, and publicity. Duties of officers are:

! Set an example to all members of hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude during and outside of rehearsals, and performances; make phone calls/text messages through the calling tree when advisor specifies, including practices and performances; complete duties assigned under each specific office; work closely with each other and advisor on all aspects of Dance Company; be reliable, dedicated, loyal, responsible, and professional when working with Dance Company members and the advisor; and make sure all rules and regulations are upheld and report any conduct, complaints, uncooperative behavior, or company problems to the advisor. The advisor will then administer discipline accordingly. Officers will work under the direction and approval of the advisor in all Dance Company practices, performances, and events. Those who make an officer position will be required to audition for Sterling Scholar in Dance.

    Concert Selection Process

Each Dance Company member is required to audition a dance for concert. They are required to create the dance on their own. This is to help the students gain a greater understanding in the field of choreography. If students would like to audition more than one dance they may do so. Their second dance may be choreographed with another student. Dancers can only audition two dances total. Again, their first dance must be choreographed on their own. Judging process:

! Dancers will fill out a choreography form given to them a month before auditions. They will also need to write a one-page paper about their idea, theme, and choreographic process for the dance.

! Students will then show at least a minute and a half of movement they have created for their dance. They will also be in charge of picking the music.

! They will perform in front of a panel of judges including the advisor/coach and officers. ! Dances will be chosen and posted. ! Student dances for concert that are chosen will be given specific guidelines to follow. If these guidelines are not met

they have a chance of their dance being cut from concert. The class disclosure statement will set forth the grading in Dance Company class. Parents/guardians must sign this statement and be aware of its contents. Dance Company is a full year commitment. Please understand the commitment you are making. Please understand being on Dance Company is a privilege, not a right! Parents/guardians, please keep a copy of this contract for your records and refer to it whenever you have questions. You play a large part in your child’s attitude toward company discipline, keeping and maintaining a positive attitude and your child’s understanding of the dynamics of working in a unified team. Dance Company is hard work. Before trying out, please evaluate the following:

    1. Can I get along with other team members? 2. Am I willing to put the time and effort into the company practices? 3. Can I respect the advisor/coach and all guest choreographers, even when being given critiques? 4. Do I have a hard time handling stress? 5. Can I be a positive role model to all company members? 6. Am I willing to work hard and solve personality conflicts with other company members and or advisor/coach? 7. Can I maintain a 3.0 GPA? 8. Can I afford the financial obligations associated with this organization?

    Contract Changes

    1. The contract is subject to change at any time with approval from administration. 2. At any time, additions may be made to the contract as it becomes necessary, with the approval of the advisor and administration. 3. The advisor may enforce other rules as they become necessary during the school year for the benefit of the organization.

*Those who do not make Dance Company may be put into Dance 3, which is a full year class. This class helps prepare students for Dance Company. Dance 3 is an auditioned and teacher recommended class. Both Dance Company and

Dance 3 lists will be posted on May 13th 2019.
