I. How do you use Bing?

           a. Bing Search

            Bing is a search engine that was created by Microsoft. When you are researching or just curious about a certain topic or article you can go to Bing.com and type in a keyword. Bing will then give you back results that most closely correspond to your search keyword. You can click on any of the articles that come up or on the left hand side it will give you more specific results to narrow your search. Below the subtopics gives you related searches in case you can't find what you are looking for.

This video shows many of the features of Bing and explains why using Bing is the logical choice over other search engines.

          On the left hand side of the search, you can actually see the news search, related searches and also the search history. Search history is one good feature by which you can track all your search keywords. You can also turn off this feature in preferences.

                b.  Advanced Search

          Apart from this, there is also advanced search which can be done for a domain, language and country.

           c.  Image Search

            Image search in Bing is also improved and has some good features. To do an image search, click on the Images link and enter the keyword.You can filter the search result based on Size, Layout, Color, Style and People.  A very beneficial feature of Bing image search is that you can move your cursor over a picture thumbnail and the picture will enlarge, giving you the opportunity to preview the picture at a bigger size.

               d. Video Search

          Bing video search looks very similar to Youtube, featuring "Top Videos," "TV," "Music," etc.  Once on the Bing video homepage, it is very easy to search for a specific video, as you just need to type a keyword into the search bar.  Once on your specified search, the left hand panel on video search can be used to filter videos based on length, screen size, resolution, and source. When you hover over any video, it plays the videos inside the search itself. With this feature you can actually view the video even if the video site is blocked or not available in your region.

                 e. Save and Share Search

          Save & share is another good feature in Bing, but its optional and you must opt-in to use it. Currently only users with Microsoft Silverlight have access to this feature. With this feature, you can save your search results to Windows Live Skydrive or share with Facebook friends or email.

           Microsoft is making brave moves with its search engine – putting pretty pictures on its homepage and renaming it to Bing. Its name contains its simplicity, speed and result... its just about saying BING! in a high-pitch voice and the meaning can be seen.

           Strange ideas arose under the name of Bing:

2003

          Registered over 6 years ago, the first owners were Bing Inc, a Colorado-based company. They are the inventor of ”a cell phone accessory that .”provides a practical solution to personal and discrete cell phone ring notification

2004

          In true dot-com entrepreneurial style this site does not make much sense and so it is rightfully redesigned the following year:

Bing began as a cell phone notification device and this was its homepage.

           Now, this is much better. It has an animated gif, an explanation of the product’s usefulness, and a cool strapline – “bing, never miss a ring!”

2006

           In 2006 the general public and Bing Inc must have realized that there is not a huge market for discrete call notification devices because all phones have a “Silent” or “Meeting” profile that do the trick for free.  Now the domain was sold to Eric Hahn, whose project he describes simply as: “a B2B CRM pen-computing AI P2P groupware product with great SMB ROI.”

2007

          That one doesn’t last very long either as visitors are admitted into hospital with entangled tongues from trying to read the website copy. Bing.com gets swiftly sold onto EasyMail who describe their business model like so:

_“bing is a sensational new way to conveniently post mail directly from your desktop PC….there’s nothing quite like it! In fact, our service is one of a kind!_

How does bing work?…By simply clicking a button on your computer, mail is beamed electronically to a bing post office. Your mail is automatically printed, folded, enveloped and dispatched into the Australia Post network the very same day. A postie will then deliver your letters as normal business mail – all this without even leaving your desk…. bing it on!”

           Bing it on! Not long after this idea was hatched it again moved to another domain owned by Microsoft.

Present Day

           Since gaining the rights to the domain Bing.com, Microsoft has evolved it into a smart search engine, capable of competing with the top market holder, Google.  In a competitive move to challenge Google, the number two and three search engines, Yahoo and Bing, have partnered in hopes of taking a higher percentage of the search engine market.  In addition to Yahoo, Bing has partnered with WolframAlpha to add to its competitive advantage versus Google.

III. Why use Bing?

Ever had trouble finding information online using a search engine?

         Bing is a search engine like Google, Ask Jeeves, or Yahoo. The exception is that it is slightly more advanced in its links, such as having "Quick Tabs." When a user types in "Obama," for example, "Quick Tab" comes up with the same links as it would on Google or Yahoo, but it also brings up side links that have more specific routes to detailed information. For "Obama," it would come up with links that say, "Images, Biography, Facts, Quotes, Speeches, Issues, Videos." One can explore, Images, Videos, Shopping, News, Maps, Travel, History, or Visual search. It is also very visually appealing, containing different pictures on each page, with information about each. With this search engine, one has more options in their online searching, and through it, can be more directed and assisted when searching for information online.

        Moreover, while searching for images with other search engines you have to pass to next pages to see more results. It is time consuming and fortunately Bing is not designed like this. You can easily see all image results by rolling down in only one page. There is no need to wander from one page to another when using Bing.

What if there was a way to get all the search results you wanted immediately?

IV. Educational Application How Can Bing Be Used in the Classroom?

     1. Bing can be used in education through many different areas of search, like images, news, and videos.

     2. Bing is not only a search engine, but also includes forums and communities where people who use Bing can collaborate. Students can join forums on Bing relating to a topic they’re researching in class and have discussions.

     3. Bing can also be used to narrow more general searches in the Educational setting with the “advanced” feature. Students can narrow results by specifying that the word they are searching has to be present verbatim in the content of the resulting sites.

     4. Bing can be used for teachers to try and detect plagiarism from students work. The teachers just simply needs to put parts of the document into the search engine and it will give them results for similar works that have been written about that particular topic.

     5_._ Bing has a Visual Search. This is a feature that could be used in the classroom to search and sort data.  However right now it is merely a beta but it could be used as a more entertaining way to search through topics and could help keep kids interested in what they are searching.

     6. Bing has many useful applications, such as a Dictionary, WolframAlpha, and a Collegiate tab, for example.

V. How Can Bing be Used in Conjunction with Other Programs?         Although Bing is a search engine and is similar to Google and Yahoo, it "cleans up" results by sorting content to only the most relevant to the search. This makes searching for decision-related topics such as travel and shopping faster and easier.

         Bing is totally unlike Google and Yahoo in that there is an option to look up information instantly without linking to another site. For example, if someone searches Type 1 Diabetes and simply wants some general information on the subject rather than links to related sites, they can click the "reference articles" feature on the sidebar and the Wikipedia article on Type 1 Diabetes will show up on the Bing website. This makes "googling" a topic for general much easier than clicking on links to other websites without knowing how relative they are to the information you want to know.Back to Top

VI. How Bing is Used Internationally?          For other countries, this search engine is very applicable. First of all, you can change the language to that of your country. Bing can be translated into a variety of languages such as Albanian, German, Swedish,etc. so that people internationally could use it more effectively. Bing can be used easily to connect international organizations because it does not discriminate between websites’ countries of origin. It will show you sites from across the globe if it pertains specifically to the information you have searched.

        Also, if you want to look up information about other countries or areas, there is a “travel” tab under Community, which lets people talk about their vacation spots, places they’ve visited, questions about those places, etc.Back to Top
