When businesses create documents for customers, be it a basic customer welcome letter, or

an elaborate print advertisement, the focus is always on creating an attractive well-

organized, interesting message. The content is just as, if not more important, than its design.

As you create each document for your Amusement Park, pay careful attention to words and

phrases that you choose to include. Your selection of adjectives, language style, and the

meanings of the words should be carefully planned and crafted to fit your businesses

targeted audience and goals.

DAY 1:

In your Student Drive create a folder titled “RCT Capstone Project”. In this folder create sub

folders of: Financial Reports, Business Documents, Concessions, Advertising, and Database.

Load the Roller Coaster Tycoon game and complete the tutorial mode so that you know what

controls are used and what they are used for. Name your Amusement park and start thinking

about what your logo will look like.

DAY 2:

LOGO:

A logo is a name, symbol, emblem or trademark designed for easy and definite recognition.

(Think of NIKE or Under Armour). In short, a logo if one of the most important elements in

defining an image for your business. A logo can contain text, graphics, or a combination of both.

Use the internet to look at some logos to give you some ideas of what your park logo should be.

STRATEGIES AND DESIGN TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CREATING YOUR LOGO:

1. Be sure that your logo is not too complex. The best logos are those that are easy to read

and recognize.

2. Use only one font type in your logo. (If you have text)

3. A logo should look good in size. Keep in mind that your logo will be included in just

about every document throughout this project.

4. Develop more than one logo and seek the opinions of your class mates to help you

select your final version…remember it should be appealing to your customers. Think of

your classmates as your customers.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Create your logo to be used on all documents. You must include at a minimum a

clipart, text (Name of the company: ________________________), and a shape of

your choice. It should look professional and fun.

Sizes and change the height to 2” and width to 2”.

3. When you are done with your logo you will save it twice. Once as a Publisher File

and Once as a JPEG Image File. Name of document: Amusement Park Name LOGO.

Save into your Business Documents Folder.

To save as a Publisher File and JPEG image file:

1. Go to Save As, when the pop up pane comes up you will change the Save as Type to the

appropriate choice and save your document. MAKE SURE TO SAVE AS BOTH!

DAY 3:

BUSINESS CARD:

A business card is a small card printed or engraved usually containing a person’s name, business

affiliation, job title, address, telephone number, email address and web site address. The

purpose of a business card is to announce one’s identity, presence, and the intention to

conduct business. The business card is perhaps the most widely used mini-document in the

business world. A business card is the handshake you leave behind after meeting someone in

the professional world.

STRATEGIES AND DSEIGN TOPS TO CONSDIER BEFORE CREATING A BUSINESS CARD:

1. Since a business card does not offer much room, it’s important to plan its design

carefully.

2. The overall look and feel of the business card should match the type of job you are

selecting. A business card designed for a lawyer would have a prestigious, professional

look; whereas a comedian’s business card would have a fun, humorous look.

3. Consider using lines or border to help create a balance look and feel on your business

card.

4. Stick to using one font type to keep it crisp, clean, and easy to read.

5. Use the internet to look as some business cards to help with some design ideas.

CONTENT AND INFORMATION TO INCLUDE ON YOUR BUSINESS CARD:

1. Open up Publisher. Choose Business Cards. From there you will choose a business

card that is 3.5” X 2” in size.

2. Make sure to include your amusement park logo.

3. The following contact information:

LETTERHEAD:

A letterhead is a sheet of stationery with the name, address, logo and sometimes other

relevant information of an organization printed at the top, bottom, left or right side. The

standard size of a letterhead is 8.5 X 11 inches. Letterhead is used to send business letter and

other forms of correspondence.

STRATEGIES AND DESIGN TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CREATING YOUR LETTERHEAD:

1. Keep the design of the letterhead professional, clean, and simple. The sole purpose

of letterhead documents is to communicate information. Therefore, the design

should be kept simple and professional looking.

2. Most letterhead designs fall within the first 2.5 inches from the top of the page.

3. Stick to using one font type in the letterhead, exception of the font type used in your

logo.

4. Try to create a balanced, symmetrical look when designing the letterhead. Type

should be kept to a maximum of 10 or 12 point size.

5. Since the logo is the most important element on the letterhead, it should be the

largest item.

6. Try using a thin border line to create separation from the letterhead design and the

rest of the page.

CONTENT AND INFORMATION TO INCLUDE ON YOUR LETTERHEAD:

1. Open up Microsoft Office Word. Page size 8.5” X 11”.

2. Create a Letterhead to match your business card that utilizes the business card

elements at the top and a decorative line with a slogan at the bottom.

3. Include the following contact information:

a. Address: 2450 Grand Boulevard in Kansas City, MO 64108

b. Phone Number: 816-555-2000

DAY 6:

STAFF T-SHIRT DESIGN:

Your employee’s have taken it upon themselves to dress how they deem appropriate…you

however do NOT feel the same way about their dress. So, you have decided to design a new

staff polo/shirt for your employee’s to wear as their new uniform. This polo/shirt will be paired

with khaki pants and black tennis shoes.

STRATEGIES AND DESIGN TIPS FOR CREATING YOUR STAFF T-SHIRT DESIGN:

1. Be sure that your design is professional looking so that your customers know right away

that this is an employee, and can ask for help.

2. Make sure that your logo is big enough to be seen by customers but not too big that it’s

the only thing they see.

3. You might consider putting STAFF on the back of the shirt so customers can tell that it is

COUPON FLYER:

To encourage patrons to attend your amusement park or to return to your amusement park,

you have deiced to design and create a flyer containing coupons that will be placed in a variety

of areas throughout the park as well as in the local newspaper.

STRATEGIES AND DESIGN TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE MAKING YOUR FLYER:

1. Since most readers tend to look at flyers as non-reading documents, keep text to a

minimum. Do, however, provide enough information to keep the reader’s attention.

2. Keep the number of fonts to a MAXIMUM of three.

3. When choosing graphics, it will be more effective to include one or two larger graphics

than to clutter the page with numerous small graphics.

4. When creating the coupons, use a dotted-line border with a small graphic of scissors

placed on the border sides to encourage customers to cut out and use the coupons.

Page 10: BIM Roller Coaster Tycoon Capstone Project...Roller Coaster TyCoon Capstone Project TCOX 2015-2016 SY 2. Create a new publisher document, and then go to Other Blank Page Sizes, Custom

5. Create a balances and symmetrical look throughout the flyer by using the same size

border for each of the coupons you will be creating.

6. Obtain some samples of coupon flyers from your local newspaper or the INTERNET and

analyze them to help you design your own.

CONTENT AND INFORMATION TO INCLUDE ON YOUR COUPON FLYER

1. Open up Microsoft Office Word- Blank Document.

2. A simple-to-read headline.

Examples: Thank you for attending (Park Name)

Come Back Soon!

Great Offers for Your Next Visit to (Park Name)

DAY 13: PROMOTIONAL PUNCH CARD: You have decided to thank your loyal customers by creating a promotional punch card. You have decided to name it the “Tycoon Club” and here’s how it works: The punch card will contain five small symbols (to be selected by you) printed on it. Every _________________ park customer will be given one “Tycoon Club” punch card. Each time a customer visits your park they will receive a hole-punch in their card. When a customer’s five symbols have all been punched out the customer will receive 1 free adult admission. Your punch card will hopefully encourage repeat business and build customer loyalty. STRATEGIES AND DESIGN TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE MAKING YOUR PUNCH CARD:

1. Use the internet to help you with some design ideas. 2. Be sure the item you select to be “punched” displays large enough to be seen and

punched. 3. Consider framing in the items to be punched with a bordered box.

CONTENT AND INFORMATION TO INCLUDE ON YOUR PUNCH CARD

1. Open Publisher- consider using a business card size to help with this since you want it to fit into people’s wallets.

2. Select a graphic image that will represent the symbol that will be punched on the cad. This graphic image will be repeated five times on the promotional punch cards. Possibilities need to be relevant to your amusement park and the items that you offer. Arrange those symbols horizontally near the bottom of the card. The distance between each image should be equal.

3. Include your parks logo. 4. Include “Tycoon Club” as your headline. 5. Place the following text just below the headline area:

a. “Get five (the symbol you selected) punched and earn one FREE adult admission in to (your park name) park.

6. Using a smaller type size than you did in Step 5 include the following text just below the area where you placed the text from above.

a. Here’s How the Tycoon Club Works: Each time attend the park, just present this card to the ticket booth employee and get one (the symbol you selected) punched. When all five (your symbol) are punched, return your card for one free adult admission into the park.

7. Add additional text and/or graphic images you feel will make the promotional punch card look creative and professional. Use caution: Space is limited. You already have five graphic images that represent the symbols to be punched out.

To save as a Publisher File and JPEG image file:

1. Go to Save As, when the pop up pane comes up you will change the Save as Type to

the appropriate choice and save your document. MAKE SURE TO SAVE AS BOTH!

DAY 14:

GIFT CERTIFICATE: Several customers have been asking if you have gift cards that they can purchase. You currently don’t have the really cool plastic gift cards but…for now you can create a paper version, until of course you find a company that can make some credit card like gift cards for your growing park. STRATEGIES AND DESIGN TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CREATING YOUR GIFT CERTIFICATE:

1. Consider using a double-line thin border to add a touch of professionalism to the gift certificate. 2. For the headline of the gift certificate, experiment with the use of a script style font. Script style

fonts give the impression that the words were actually hand-drawn on the document. 3. Limit the use of graphics to one (not including the logo). Any more will make the gift certificate

feel cluttered. CONTENT AND INFORMATION TO INCLUDE ON YOUR GIFT CERTIFICATE:

1. Open Publisher- choose more blank sizes. Choose create new page size. You will create a page size of Height 3” and Width 6”

2. On the top center, place the text “Gift Certificate”. This text should be the largest element on the gift certificate.

3. Include your amusement park logo and the following contact information on the gift certificate:

a. Address: 2450 Grand Boulevard in Kansas City, MO 64108

b. Phone number: 816-555-2000

c. Web Site Address: http://www.amusementparkname.com 4. Include your slogan for your park. 5. Create an area that allows for the following information to be filled in. You may need to use the

internet to give you some ideas on how to format this. a. To: b. From: c. Date: d. Amount:

6. Add additional text or graphic images you feel will make the gift certificates look creative, professional, and welcoming to the recipient.

7. Be sure to save as a Publisher file and as a JPEG. Save as Amusement Park Name Staff T-

DAY 15:

Finish any unfinished assignments. Run Box Office or Fright Night Simulation- try and reach tycoon status. (MAKE SURE TO SAVE YOUR GAME FILE)

DAY 16/17:

BILLBOARD ADVERTISEMENT: Your park is doing great! However, you think it could do much better. You have decided to do a few

advertisements. One of which, is a billboard advertisement. A billboard is a great way to advertise your

business. Depending on its location, it can reach thousands of people a day. You have chosen a busy

highway that is in the vicinity of your amusement park. You have talked to the advertising company and

they have asked you to create a design for your billboard.

STRATEGIES AND DESIGN TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE MAKING YOUR BILLBOARD:

1. Since most readers tend to look at billboards as non-reading documents, keep text to a

minimum. Do, however, provide enough information to keep the reader’s attention.

2. Consider this: Your target audience will be driving from 60-80mph…make sure they

don’t have to read much…get your point across in as little as a sentence. It would be

terrible if they didn’t know your message or they crashed trying to read your billboard.

3. Keep the number of fonts to a MAXIMUM of three.

4. When choosing graphics, it will be more effective to include one or two larger graphics

than to clutter the billboard with numerous small graphics.

5. Use the internet to help give you some design ideas for your billboard.

6. Consider your placement of information when putting this together. People read from

left to right…finding the most important information on the left hand side and ending

with the most significant…such as starting with your headline and ending with your logo.

CONTENT AND INFORMATION TO INCLUDE ON YOUR BILLBOARD:

1. Open up Publisher- Choose more blank sizes- Choose Legal Landscape (14 X 8.5).

2. You Billboard must contain 5 important parts:

Headline: (Come up with something that will attract the reader’s and get them to your

park)

Copy: (A brief description of the product or service that you offer)

Illustration: (An Image that represents your product/service)

Signature: (Your Logo)

Slogan: (Your slogan/catchphrase that represents your business)

3. Be aware of your white space. Don’t leave too much blank space on your billboard making

it look dull and unappealing.

4. Make sure to include pertinent information such as: Phone number, web address or how

to purchase tickets.

5. Consider this: You can take a picture of your park with the photo feature in the Roller

Coaster Tycoon game.

6. When you think you are done…take a step back from your computer…look at your

billboard…is this something you would see on the side of the highway for Six Flags? If not,

re-evaluate and try something else! As a classmate what they think.

Be sure to save as a Publisher file and as a JPEG. Save as Amusement Park Name Billboard. Save

into your Advertising Folder.

To save as a Publisher File and JPEG image file:

1. Go to Save As, when the pop up pane comes up you will change the Save as Type to the

Day 18-22:

TRI-FOLD BROCHURE:

You will be creating a tri-fold brochure about your amusement park. This brochure will be

located at your information booths, your ticket booths as well as the information center’s located

on major highways for state visitors. The purpose of a brochure is to inform the reader of what

you have to offer, interesting facts and enticing graphics that will make the person reading it,

visit your park.

STRATEGIES AND DESIGN TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE MAKING YOUR BROCHURE:

1. Pay careful attention not to clutter the brochure. The design should have a consistent

systematic flow that moves the reader from the outside from cover through the inside

right panel.

2. Consider using a thin-line border on the inside three panels of your brochure to “frame”

the information contained on them.

3. Make sure to pay special attention to how the brochure is folded, as to where things will

be located and how the reader will receive that information. Pay attention to which panel

is your front and which one will be your back.

Day 26-30:

ADVERTISING / INVESTOR POWERPOINT:

Your park has grown so much that you are considering opening up another location. One small

problem….you don’t have enough money to open up another location on your own. You have

set up a meeting with some “Big Wigs” that are interested in helping your finance this second

location, but want to see proof of how they will get a return on their investment, how you plan

on making this second location as financially sound as the first. The meeting is in 5 days….you

have to put together an AMAZING presentation for your possible investors. You have decided

that since you are a “wiz” with the computer, you will put together a PowerPoint presentation.

STRATEGIES AND DESIGN TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE MAKING YOUR POWERPOINT:

1. Pictures, Not Words. Use as many visuals (images, clip art, photographs) to tell your story as you can. Why? Because we humans “digest” images faster than text. Reading text requires the brain to work through a soft of decoding process. Because of how we’re wired, visuals can bypass the decoding and analysis.

2. Insert an Occasional “Question” Slide. By anticipating your audience’s questions, you can hold their interest while demonstrating that you understand their concerns. Oh—and it keeps them from drifting off, too (probably a throwback to their second-grade teachers jolting them awake by calling on them unexpectedly).

3. Color Is Significant. As much as possible, choose your background colors for their subliminal effect. Industrial psychologists, the people who study what makes advertising effective, offer these guidelines: RED: Excitement, intensity BLUE: Truth, trust, justice ORANGE: Action, optimism

GREEN: Expansion, growth YELLOW: Confidence, wisdom PURPLE: Royalty, sophistication WHITE: : Professionalism, newness, innocence BLACK: Authority, strength GRAY: Integrity, maturity

4. 6X6 Rule: No more than 6 Bullets per slide…no more than 6 Words per Bullet. 5. Remember that transitions and animation are nice…but subtle is KEY!

CONTENT AND INFORMATION TO INCLUDE IN YOUR POWERPOINT:

1. Open up PowerPoint- Choose a theme that best fits what you are trying to do.

2. Make sure to include your logo in your PowerPoint.

3. Make sure you have a cover slide.

4. Make sure you keep transitions and animations to a minimum. (Must have some)

5. Make sure you answer the following questions:

a. Who is your audience? What does your audience want to know from you?

b. What are you presenting and what will you use to enhance your topic?

c. What do your investor’s want to see?

i. How much money do you make now?

ii. How much money do you plan to make with 2 locations?

iii. What types of advertising will you be doing?

1. What will those advertisements look like?

iv. How much money do they need to invest?

v. How much can they expect in return?

d. Know that when people invest in your company they will want a percentage in

return. How much of the return are you willing to offer each one? (You will have

5 investors at your meeting).

e. Where will this new location be? What makes the new location so special? How

is the new location an advantage?

f. When do your investors need to make a decision? How many of the investors

will you be accepting an offer from? (You do not have to have all 5 investors

share in your profits)

6. Keep sounds to a minimum and only used when absolutely necessary.

7. Be sure to include financial information that you have gathered throughout your stint of

playing the simulations.

8. Be sure to include any advertising you have done…as well as create some new ideas!

9. Will you be on social media? Which ones? Why?

10. Have a conclusion slide.
