Lin-Manuel Miranda, who conceived the TonyAward®-winning IN THE HEIGHTS and

wrote the music and lyrics, is a new voice withan old soul.

The show, which celebrates life in aWashington Heights barrio, is propelled by therhythms of hip-hop and Latin music. However, the invigorating beat belies a musical steeped inBroadway tradition. INTHE HEIGHTS follows aclose-knit community ofhard-working Latinoimmigrants as they strivefor a better life, search forlove, dream the AmericanDream and create a homein northernmostManhattan. Miranda talksabout the musical:

The central figure in thepiece is Usnavi, who, likeTevye in Fiddler on theRoof, is both leading manand storyteller. Is Fiddlerin HEIGHTS’ DNA?“If you look at our openingnumber, it’s ‘Tradition’ with hip-hop. It’s very deliberately modeled after ‘Tradition.’” (Fiddler is about a community where nothing’s changed for hundreds of years. HEIGHTS is about a community where everything is changing everyday) “… If we all come from different communities with our own traditions, what do wetake with us, what do we keep? … When JeromeRobbins was directing Fiddler, he said, ‘This showis about tradition, and if there’s anything that doesn’t have to do with tradition, it’s out.’ For us,the watchword was ‘home.’ If there was anythingin the show that didn’t have to do with the conceptof home, we took it out.”

IN THE HEIGHTS also carries on a very different tradition: a New York musical in whichthe character of the city is integral to the fabricof the piece. (Think “Guys and Dolls,” “Company,” “West Side Story,” and “Rent.”) Was that intentional?“I’m a lifelong New Yorker and one of the thingsI love about Washington Heights is that it’s always

been an immigrantneighborhood. It hassuch a different energyfrom everywhere else inthe city because it’s got aterrain that was neverconquered. If you go to181st Street, you’re amile above sea level. Youtake the subway thereand it’s unreal – the escalator is longer thananything I’ve ever seen. It’s also got Fort TryonPark and Inwood HillPark, which is the onlyunplanned park onManhattan Island. It’s a very special place.

In many ways, the show is a valentine to Washington Heights.”

There is a considerable amount of Spanish spo-ken and sung in the show. Do you need to under-stand Spanish to enjoy the show?“Most of our audience is your typical, theater-going audience. It’s wonderful that we’ve becomean event show for Latinos on Broadway, but theoverwhelming majority of people who come tosee our show – and this was particularly true off-Broadway – don’t speak a word of Spanish. Andthey come away loving it. They understand it.”

Revolutionary dance company MOMIXbrings its breathtaking fantasy piece

Botanica to the Knight Theater at LevineCenter for the Arts inFebruary. Legendarychoreographer MosesPendleton combinesathletic dance, rivetingmusic, outrageouscostumes, inventiveprops, and pure talentto create anunforgettable multimediaexperience.

Botanica will transportyou to a fantasy world of surrealimages and childlike wonderbrought to life by a cast of dancer-illusionists. Set to an eclectic score that rangesfrom birdsong to Vivaldi, Botanica revealsnature’s changing imagery in MOMIX’ssignature illusionary style.

One critic says that Botanica is “earthly

and otherworldly at once—a magnificentvision of the everyday miracles around us.”

Using large-scale puppets, projectedimagery, and larger-than-

life props designed byMichael Curry (TheLion King), MOMIXevokes a vivid landscapepopulated by Pendleton’swhimsical, fertile, and

mythical imagination.Pendleton has been

one of America’s mostinnovative and widely performedchoreographers and directors for

over 40 years. A founding memberof the ground-breaking PilobolusDance Theater in 1971, he formed

It’s no accident that the Library Congressnamed its Prize for Popular Song after

George Gershwin. Along with his brotherIra, George Gershwin wrote some of themost beloved, most lasting songs in theAmerican songbook –“Embraceable You,” “IGot Rhythm,” and“Summertime,” to namea few. The CharlotteSymphony and newMusic DirectorChristopher Warren-Green pay tribute toGershwin’s genius thismonth in Fascinatin’Rhythm, January 21 &22 at the Belk Theater.

The “fascinatin’rhythm” that bubbledthrough most ofGershwin’s music was, of course, syncopation – the accented energy that gaveragtime its romp and jazz its swing.Gershwin, a Jewish boy from Brooklyn, spent many an evening in Harlem as ayoung man, soaking up the vibrant soundsof jazz. His first job was as a song-pluggeron Tin Pan Alley, a 15-year-old kid sellingtunes that weren’t half as good as those hewould later write. Within a couple of years,he had published his first song. But his bigyear was 1924, when the 26-year-oldGershwin composed the Broadway showLady Be Good (starring Fred Astaire andfeaturing the song “Fascinatin’ Rhythm”)

and Rhapsody in Blue, which wouldimmediately become a concert hall favorite.

“It was on the train, with its steelyrhythms, its rattle-ty bang, that is so oftenso stimulating to a composer –that I

suddenly heard, and evensaw on paper – thecomplete construction ofthe Rhapsody, frombeginning to end,”Gershwin would laterrelate. “I heard it as a sortof musical kaleidoscope ofAmerica, of our vastmelting pot, of ourunduplicated nationalpep, of our blues, ourmetropolitan madness.”

Pianist Orion Weissjoins the Symphony forRhapsody in Blue, which

will close the concert with a flourish. Earlierin the evening, soprano Jonita Lattimorebrings Gershwin’s greatest songs to the stage– “The Man I Love,” “Our Love is Here toStay,” “S’Wonderful,” and the ever-popular“Summertime.” Lattimore has been praisedfor her “sumptious and lyrical voice,”described by the Chicago Tribune as “a realtreat.”

Led by Christopher Warren-Green,the orchestra will get a few turns on its ownwith Gershwin’s saucy “Cuban Overture”and lively selections from the Porgy and BessSymphonic Picture. S’Wonderful!

One of the unique sounds evoked by the Billy Elliot Orchestra is that of the English brass band.Usually comprised of Cornets, Flugelhorns, Tenor Horns, Euphoniums, and Tubas, these musicalensembles originated as work bands and were sponsored by (and long identified with) variousindustrial concerns and coal mines. The Easington Colliery Band was founded in 1913. Brassplayers with band experience were encouraged by management to come from the west ofDurham to work at the colliery and play in the band, which, despite the closure of the coalmining operations in 1993, continues to perform to this day. The band is still based in the oldcolliery pay office. The building is the last remaining evidence of the pit.

In 1984, the British National Union of Mineworkers (the NUM) went on strike to savethe coal industry from the threatened closures of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who was politically opposed to state-owned industry and determined to crush the

unions.

The strike went on for one year. The miners’ families had to survive on handouts from otherworking people who supported their stand. But by employing riot police to intimidate theircommunities and importing coal from Eastern Europe, the Conservative government brokethe unions. Over the subsequent 10 years, the entire industry was dismantled.

The story of Billy Elliot takes place in the coal fields of Northern England, where mininghad been the major employer for hundreds of years. In 1984 more than 300,000 menworked in the mining industry; today there are less than 1,000. More than 98 percent ofthe coal used for British energy is now imported from abroad.

Are you in the mood for love? What abouta romantically charged evening where

passion and heartbreak collide in an operathat has stood the test of time, hailed bycritics as the ultimate love story?

Opera Carolina setsthe stage for the Februaryseason of romance – whenlovers exchange gifts andpromises of passion – withits inspiring production ofLa Traviata (the fallenwoman). Popularizedthrough time, the story ofLa Traviata has been adaptedin the memorable classicmovie Camillestarring GretaGarbo, and inPretty Woman andMoulin Rouge.

Thistimeless tale oflove, passion andbetrayal is theenduring story ofCamille, retold in Giuseppe Verdi’s widelyloved classic of a Parisian courtesan whosurrenders to love. Based on the true romanceof Alexandre Dumas and Marie Duplessis, the story revolves around Paris’ mostillustrious femme fatale, Violetta Valéry, abeautiful but frail woman who leaves herdestructive life to live with her first real love,

Alfredo Germont. But social bias andVioletta’s failing health intervene, turninglove to tragedy and remorse as Alfredo’s fathersabotages the relationship.

Premiering in Venice in 1853, La Traviatawas scandalous for its timebecause of the cross-classromance and contemporarydress of the performers. Buttime has judged the opera as oneof Verdi’s greatest works, thethird of his famous triumvirateof operas (Rigoletto, Il trovatoreand La Traviata) from anextraordinarily creative period inhis long and productive life. La

Traviata remains atouching story thatresonates andmesmerizes audienceseven today.

Infused withabundant melodythat underscores thepathos and joy, LaTraviata is essentially

a singing opera that appeals to opera buffs aswell as the uninitiated.

You won’t want to miss this belovedopera, one of the top-three most-performedoperas after Madama Butterfly and La Bohème– according to Opera America.

Get swept up in the grandeur of LaTraviata!
