“Every video is an opportunity to sort of enhance the brand of the art-ist and allow that to be an opportunity if you want to deliver a slightly dif-ferent viewpoint of the artist,” says Patrick Tracy, who directed “10,000 Hours.” “If you want to stamp a new era, we’ve done that with Dan + Shay throughout various album cycles with different colors. You’re evolving the brand through those visual impressions, but at the same time, you also have to think about the song itself and make sure you’re doing justice as a one-off, stand-alone piece.”

Directors use three standard methods to create those pieces: the nar-rative video, which conveys a story; the concept video, featuring a series of images that add up to an emotion or provide a sense of what the song is about; and the performance video. Most videos employ at least two of those approaches, as “I Hope You’re Happy Now” does with a pair of actors playing out the song’s post-relationship narrative while Pearce and Brice re-create a performance in a small club.

“You don’t want to be on the nose with a video,” says “Hope You’re Happy” director Sam Siske. “When you’re watching the video, you [usually] know the song, you follow the artist, so when you want to see the video, you want it to bring something new to that thought, but in a positive way and not de-tract from it. One thing I saw in each director’s work this year was, ‘How can

we progress this song?’ ”Owen’s “Homemade,” directed by

Justin Clough, brings out the old-fashioned values — dedication, sim-plicity, congeniality — at the heart of the song with a plot based on his grand-father’s sweet, but persistent, pursuit of his grandmother in the 1940s.

Stapleton’s “Second To Know One,” directed by Pure Imagination Studios’ David Coleman, utilizes Lego anima-tion to make a cartoonish adventure out of a burning track. Both the song and the clip are built on conflict, though the video puts a lighter spin on the record-ing’s fiery emotion. The video drops a

number of Easter eggs: details that reward Stapleton superfans or might inform more casual listeners. For example, a stage crasher is inspired by an incident from a real-life Stapleton concert, a Picasso-like painting of him draws from the lyrics of his 2017 album cut “Up To No Good Livin’,” and a bird of prey is a nod to the mascot at Stapleton and Coleman’s high school alma mater in Kentucky: the Johnson Central Golden Eagles. Blasts from Stapleton’s animated guitar also embrace the value in his vocation.

“The power of music can defeat this giant entity, this thing that seems in-surmountable, this thing that looks overwhelming,” says Coleman. “Music helps you get through that, and especially the kind of music that Chris makes.”

The power of music is central to the power of the video, too.“You can make the most amazing video, but if it doesn’t have a song to

support it, it’s not going to have the impact that it needs to have,” observes Siske. “It’s not going to be the piece of art that it needs to be.”

One way to judge a hit video is similar to the test of a hit song: It needs to wear well with successive exposure.

“The replay value” is key, says Tracy. “If you watch a video once and it’s like, ‘Oh, yeah, it’s what the lyrics are talking about,’ you might as well just close your eyes and listen to the song. I think when videos are able to tap into a different interpretation of it, it leaves the viewer with a little bit more to sink their teeth into.”

That includes the artist’s personality. In each of the nominated videos, the act had some very specific ideas about how to present the story and imagery in the project, reflecting their own history and experiences. In Stapleton’s case, he sought out the Lego involvement, a fantasy approach that fits with his surprise appearance in an episode of Game of Thrones.

“Chris likes to push boundaries,” notes Coleman. “He likes to do new things and to create sounds that are unique to him. We tried to do that same kind of thing in the video.”

Ultimately, as the video business evolves, this year’s CMA trophy will as-suredly go to a project that does what a great video should — supply a stellar song with a clip that lifts it to another level.

“I am definitely of that MTV generation,” says Fanjoy. “I have to have enough to hold my attention.”

Luke Combs’ “Forever After All” (River House/Columbia Nashville) blasts in atop Billboard’s airplay-, streaming- and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart dated Nov. 7.

The song is just the sixth to arrive at the summit since the chart launched as an all-encompassing genre survey in 1958 and the second this year, after Morgan Wallen’s “7 Summers” (Big Loud) on the Aug. 29 list.

“Forever” concurrently blasts onto the all-genre, multimetric Billboard Hot 100 at No. 2, the highest debut ever by a solo male for a song that has also appeared on Hot Country Songs. It surpasses the No. 5 entrance of “Lost in You” by Garth Brooks’ alter ego, Chris Gaines, in September 1999.

Combs, who wrote his new leader with Drew Parker and Robert Willi-ford, told Billboard “ ‘Forever After All’ doesn’t happen without my wife, Nicole. This song is the next chapter in our story, but it’s awesome to see so many people are able to connect in the same way I feel about her in their own lives. And it will always mean a lot to us because it’s the first song I wrote in our home together, but even more so now with the reaction from the fans.”

He adds of the title, which he first previewed on TikTok in late August, “I had been holding this song back for about two years, so I was really itching to get it out. But it was well worth the wait for me, and I hope it was for the fans, too. I think this will be one we will enjoy for a long, long time.”

“Forever” awards Combs his third Hot Country Songs leader and first No. 1 debut. It follows “Beautiful Crazy,” which reigned for 11 weeks beginning in March 2019, and “When It Rains It Pours,” which led for two frames starting in November 2017.

The track is among the new selections included on the deluxe version of Combs’ second LP, What You See Is What You Get, which was reissued Oct. 23. (It has been dubbed What You See Ain’t Always What You Get in its 23-track deluxe form.)

“Forever” banked 29.1 million U.S. streams in the week ending Oct. 29, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, and debuts atop Country Streaming Songs, marking Combs’ third No. 1. It f lies in at No. 2 on the all-genre

Streaming Songs survey, where it’s his highest-charting hit. The song sold 52,000 downloads in the same frame and bounds in atop Country Digital Song Sales as his sixth No. 1. It also bows at the peak of the all-genre Digital Song Sales tally as Combs’ first leader.

On Country Airplay, “Forever” starts at No. 56 with 762,000 audience impressions in the week ending Nov. 1. (Meanwhile, current promoted single “Better Together” bumps 21-17, up 29% to 11.3 million impressions.)

What You See Is What You Get still reigns over Top Country Albums for a 32nd week, up 399% to 109,000 equivalent album units. It simultaneously returns to the penthouse (21-1) on the all-genre Billboard 200 for a second week, after it debuted at the apex of the list dated Nov. 23, 2019. The 102.3 million weekly

streams for the album’s songs also break its own record for the largest streaming week for a country title. It first set the record in its debut week (74 million).

Further, with What You See Is What You Get crown-ing Top Country Albums and “Forever” dominating Hot Country Songs, Country Streaming Songs and Country Digital Song Sales, Combs is the first artist to rule four country rankings since Wallen led the same four lists dated Aug. 29.

Combs (in 2019) and Kane Brown (in 2017) are the only artists that have led all five country charts simul-taneously, having included Country Airplay coronations to their sweeps.

‘ON’ TOP AGAIN Matt Stell notches his second straight career-opening Country Airplay No. 1 as “Everywhere but On” (RECORDS/Arista Nashville) leaps 5-1 in its 47th week, up 21% to 31.7 million impressions in the week ending Nov. 1. It’s the biggest hop to the pinnacle since Scotty McCreery’s “In Between” leaped 7-1 on June 27.

“Everywhere,” which Stell wrote with Lance Miller and Paul Sikes, is the second single from Stell’s same-named EP that peaked at No. 32 in November 2019. Stell’s introductory hit, “Prayed for You,” led the chart for two weeks in October 2019.

Sam Hunt’s second studio full-length, and first in over five years, Southside (MCA Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville), debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart dated April 18. In its first week (ending April 9), it earned 46,000 equivalent album units, including 16,000 in album sales, ac-cording to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

Southside marks Hunt’s second No. 1 on the chart and fourth top 10. It follows freshman LP Montevallo, which arrived at the summit in No-vember 2014 and reigned for nine weeks. To date, Montevallo has earned 3.9 million units, with 1.4 million in album sales.

Montevallo has spent 267 weeks on the list, tying Luke Bryan’s Crash My Party as the sixth-longest-running titles in the chart’s 56-year history.

On the all-genre Billboard 200, Southside ar-rives at No. 5, awarding Hunt his second top 10 after the No. 3-peaking Montevallo.

Hunt first released the EP X2C, which debuted and peaked at No. 5 on Top Country Albums in August 2014. Following Montevallo, Between the Pines: Acoustic Mixtape started at its No. 7 high in November 2015.

Montevallo produced five singles, four of which hit the pinnacle of Country Airplay: “Leave the Night On,” “Take Your Time,” “House Party” and “Make You Miss Me.” “Break Up in a Small Town” peaked at No. 2.

Hunt co-penned all 12 songs on Southside, including “Body Like a Back Road,” which was released in 2017. The smash hit ruled Country Airplay for three weeks and the airplay-, streaming- and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart for a then-record 34 frames. It now ranks second only to Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line’s “Meant to Be” (50 weeks atop the latter list in 2017-18).

“Downtown’s Dead,” which is also on the new set, reached Nos. 14 and 15 on Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay, respectively, in June 2018. “Kin-folks” led Country Airplay on Feb. 29, becoming Hunt’s seventh No. 1. It hit No. 3 on Hot Country Songs.

Latest single “Hard to Forget” jumps 17-9 on Hot Country Songs. It’s his eighth top 10, having corralled 8.2 million U.S. streams (up 96%) and 5,000 in

sales (up 21%) in the tracking week. On Country Airplay, it hops 18-15 (11.9 mil-lion audience impressions, up 16%).

TRY TO ‘CATCH’ UP WITH YOUNG Brett Young achieves his fifth consecutive and total Country Airplay No. 1 as “Catch” (Big Machine Label Group) ascends

2-1, increasing 13% to 36.6 million impressions.Young’s first of six chart entries, “Sleep With-

out You,” reached No. 2 in December 2016. He followed with the multiweek No. 1s “In Case You Didn’t Know” (two weeks, June 2017), “Like I Loved You” (three, January 2018), “Mercy” (two, August 2018) and “Here Tonight” (two, April 2019).

“Catch” completes his longest journey to No. 1, having taken 46 weeks to reach the apex. It out-paces the 30-week climb of “Here Tonight.”

On Hot Country Songs, “Catch” pushes 7-5 for a new high.

COMBS ‘DOES’ IT AGAIN Luke Combs’ “Does to Me” (River House/Columbia Nashville), featuring Eric Church, ascends 11-8 on Country Airplay, up 10% to 24.7 million in audience. The song is Combs’ eighth straight career-opening top 10, following a record run of seven consecutive out-of-the-gate, properly promoted No. 1 singles.

Church adds his 15th Country Airplay top 10.

THAT TOOK QUITE ‘A FEW’ MONTHS Travis Denning shatters the record for the most weeks it has taken to penetrate the Country Airplay top 10 as “After a Few” (Mercury Nashville) climbs 12-10 in its 57th week, up 4% to 21.4 mil-lion in radio reach.

The song surpasses two tracks that took 50 weeks each to enter the top 10: Easton Corbin’s “A Girl Like You,” which reached No. 10 in January 2018 be-fore peaking at No. 6 that February, and Aaron Watson’s “Outta Style,” which achieved its No. 10 high in December 2017.

“After” is Denning’s second Country Airplay entry. “David Ashley Parker From Powder Springs” traveled to No. 32 in September 2018.

RANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 148 stations by Nielsen Music. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Nielsen Audio- copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2020, Nielsen Audio). The list of all Country Airplay chart reporters can be viewed on Nielsen Music’s platforms.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in

audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they

are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen Music) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCEMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay lists the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.

The weekly Country Songwriters and Country Producers charts are based on total points accrued by a songwriter and producer, respectively, for each attributed song that appears on the Hot Country Songs chart. As with Billboard’s yearly recaps, multiple writers or producers split points for each song equally (and the dividing of points will lead to occasional ties on rankings).

All data measures U.S. activity as of the week ending October 29, 2020. All units counts are rounded to the nearest thousand. Album consumption units — also known as albums plus TEA plus SEA — consists of album sales; track-equivalent album (TEA) sales whereby 10 tracks equal one consumption unit; and stream equivalent albums (SEA) whereby 1,250 paid and/or 3,750 ad-supported audio on-demand streams (OAD) equal one consumption unit. Nielsen Music/MRC Data has reprocessed year-to-date figures to account for a change in methodology, resulting in a restatement in streaming data from a provider, which has resulted in a shift in some previously reported data, most notably for video streams.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE NOVEMBER 2, 2020 | PAGE 15 OF 18

When Ashley McBryde co-hosted the CMT Music Awards on Oct. 21, three of her band members wore black face masks with a strip of duct tape during their blistering version of “Martha Divine.”

The silver adhesive raised some eyebrows among viewers who failed to connect that detail to the song’s video, including one who assumed it was a political statement.

“Somebody on Twitter was talking about some sort of liberal agenda, and blah, blah, blah, and how lame it was,” says McBryde with an audible smirk. “I was like, ‘Wow, interesting take.’ It’s just from the music video, and you can go check it out here, and thanks for tuning in. We didn’t put that much thought into putting duct tape on, other than it would look cooler than just having plain black masks on.”

The tape is important in the video — it’s essential to keep a victim quiet when stuffing them in the trunk — and it thus underscores the darkness in “Martha Divine.” The song captures a vengeful death in progress, adding to the lineage of country songs in which a character is killed: The Chicks’ “Goodbye Earl,” Marty Robbins’ “El Paso,” Reba McEntire’s “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” and the extended version of Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls,” to name a few.

“I think Ashley’s one of those artists who is going to matter in 20 or 30 years,” predicts “Martha Divine” co-writer Jeremy Spillman (“Arlington,” “Hell on the Heart”). “I think she’s got that thing like Merle [Haggard], like all those old cats did, where she’s mak-ing good music, and you’ll pull up ‘One Night Standards’ in 2050 and go, ‘Man, that was a good song.’ ”

“Martha Divine” is a good one, too, carved out during a nighttime cowrite three or four years ago in Spillman’s small, blue-lit base-ment writing room at the St. Charles Studio in East Nashville. It was the composers’ first co-write, but instead of treating the appoint-ment with kid gloves, McBryde announced she was in a mood to go dark. With Spillman’s encouragement, she started sharing stories about urban legends in Arkan-sas. In turn, Spillman told her about Martha Divine Hole, a rural swimming spot a few miles outside of Glasgow, Ky., that he splashed in during his youth. A young girl, Martha Devine, allegedly drowned there in the 1800s, and a variety of ghostly phenomena have scared visitors after dark over the years.

“We combined that with the fact that when I was 17, there was this woman that my dad was dating that I absolutely could not stand,” recalls McBryde. “The name ‘Martha Divine’ was just so much fun to say, and what if this was kind of the other side of what ‘Jolene’ could have sounded like? Instead of ‘Please don’t take my man,’ it would be, ‘Now that you’ve taken him, I’m going to break your face.’ ”

McBryde offered the menacing first lines, “I got this feeling/And I got this shovel,” over an A-minor chord and filled out an opening verse in which the singer identifies the cheater who has lured her daddy. Her name, Martha Divine, became the driver for a chorus loaded with threatening anger, justifying — in the singer’s mind, anyway — the impending death of this Jezebel, addressed with coarse language and the threat of eternal damnation. Spillman convinced McBryde to shift into a related key, C-major, during that chorus, creating a sonic lift and giving all that vitriol an improbable

singalong quality.“Going to that major one chord there kind of took her to that melody,” says

Spillman. “That chorus melody, to me, feels like 1975 country music gold.”The shovel from the opening verse came back into play at the end of

“Martha Divine,” as the singer tells Jezebel, “It ain’t murder if I bury you alive.” McBryde considered the shovel’s impact, and the depth of the victim’s likely physical injuries, in gruesome, meticulous detail.

“Seriously,” she says with a laugh, “I’ve got to stop listening to murder podcasts.”

Spillman commandeered the demo, loaded with ghoulish guitar tones and a steady electrified pulse. McBryde, in turn, introduced it to her band during preproduction for Never Will, conducted at the Co-Op in East Nashville. Producer Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Miranda Lambert) checked in periodically during that process, and between those rehearsals and the actual recording

session, they created distinct peaks and valleys for “Martha Divine.”

“That was really tricky,” says McBryde. “It was trying to make the song go somewhere knowing that the chords didn’t change. And we thought we had developed enough of the musical arcs, but of course, Jay was happy to increase that and really exaggerate it with us.”

Most obvious in that f inal version is an extended drums-only opening (Spillman compares drummer Quinn Hill’s rhythms to Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People”), fol lowed by a spi k y g u ita r sec t ion a nd eventually a down verse before it revs back up to its forceful conclusion. Guitarist Chris Harris added a unison voice in a lower octave during the second verse to yield a subliminal haunting element.

“The character of the song, she’s contem-plating, going back into her mind, remember-ing why she’s doing this: ‘Honor thy father, honor thy mother,’ ” explains McBryde. “So Chris, I guess you could say he’s almost her father’s voice or that Bible-beating thing that

never leaves your mind.”McBryde delivered her vocal live during the tracking session, with the

band set up in a circle outside the drum room. She was positioned so that her voice did not project toward Hill.

“They usually have to either point my face away from the drum room or just make sure there’s plenty of baffling,” she says. “Whereas most of the time drums have a tendency to leak into vocal mics, on this record and the first record, I’m so damn loud that it would start to bleed into the drum room.”

The album’s first single, “One Night Standards,” reached a personal best, No. 11, on Country Airplay and was also certified gold by the RIAA. With the unconventional drum section, neither McBryde nor Spillman thought “Martha Divine” had a shot at ever becoming a single. But Warner Music Nashville went the risky route, betting on her uniqueness by releasing it to country radio via PlayMPE on Sept. 23.

“It wasn’t my idea, but it seems like the right one,” she says. “Do you know how happy I would be if I had a ‘Martha Divine’ gold record plaque in my house? Like, the most unlikeliest of singles — I would just be abso-lutely tickled.”

Which is, of course, better than spooked.

On Nov. 8, 1980, Willie Nelson’s “O n t h e R o a d A g a i n” t o p p e d

Billboard’s Hot Countr y Songs chart. He wrote the classic for the f ilm Honeysuckle Rose, in which h e s t a r r e d a s c o u nt r y s i n ge r Buck Bonham.

The song became Nelson’s ninth of 21 Hot Country Songs No. 1s (tal-lied between 1975 and 2003) and crossed over to No. 20 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, where it marked his highest-charting hit to that point. It won the Grammy Award for best country song in 1981.

Nelson, 87, has mounted a career of legendary status. He became a

major force in the ’70s country outlaw movement and was later in-ducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1993.

In July, Nelson posted his record-ex tending 53rd top 10 on Top Country Albums with First Rose of Spring. The set made him the first artist with top 10s in every decade, starting in the ’60s. He has since been joined by Dolly Parton, whose Holly Dolly Christmas launched atop the Oct. 8-dated list.
