I'VE just heard "Rockin' Crickets"by the Rockin' Rebels, and I

must admit I'm a little confused.Tell you why.

WHY must the name on a recordmean so much these days to

the record -buying public ? I take,for example, the Beatles singing"Twist and Shout" on Thank YourLucky Stars when they brought thehouse down. I admit they made avery good job of it, but the IsleyBrothers brought this out somemonths ago and it was practicallyunheard of. They make the Beatlessound like a very ordinary group,as this is one of the best recordsever brought out, besides theirfantastic "Shout". Believe me, I

THE king of the guitar-Chuck, Berry - is now back in theBritish charts after five years, hisLP on Pye International called"Chuck Berry" being number 20last week in the LP charts.

It is a pity, however, that Chesshave released two old tracks, "I'mTalking About You"/"Diploma ForTwo" as his first record releasesince coming off parole in April.

Let, us hope that Chuck soon hasa new single released of the calibreof "Sweet Little Sixteen" and"Johnny B. show them that Birmingham groupscan produce music every bit as ex-citing as Liverpool's."

Your Birmingham reporter sub-mits that anyone seeing Denny andHis Diplomats in action will agreethat realisation of this ambition,and their other show business aims,are just around the corner forthese four highly talented Birming-ham lads.

Admittedly, their line-up is thesame as the Beatles', with Dennyhimself lead guitar, Sonny Laine,bass, Phil Ralston rhythm guitar,Bev Ralston on drums; and allthree guitarists weighing in on thevocals; but on their own numberstheir sound is quite different, evenunique. They can, of course, emu-late exactly the sound of theBeatles and other groups, but inBirmingham it is their own com-positions which are in great de-mand. I heard them do four ofthese last week and could not over-emphasise their potential. Two ofthe numbers in particular, "Foreverand a day" and "It's what you dothat counts", I urge the disc com-panies to hear.

The Diplomats were formedabout twelve months ago, and theirlast personnel switch was carriedout last February, the month inwhich they made their TV debut,on BBC's Midlands at Six show,All within the 17-18 age group,Denny and his boys are ex -Gram-mar school lads who have givenup the prospect of comparatively"safe" jobs for the hazards of showbusiness. A most interesting point

is that they all have naturallyblonde hair, a feature which evi-dently helps to boost the successof the* thriving fan club.

Denny and the Diplomats arenever short of bookings, and theyare currently working seven nightsa week, every week. At their ball-room dates they are frequentlywatched by top -line stars who arealways impressed by their show. Toquote just two stars Susan Maughanthinks that they are "Great" and

Mill THE BEATLES?'MY BON,VIE RELEASE WAS CUT 3 YEARS AGO!

WHILE the Beatles are topping charts with "From Me To You",the German company Polydor have come out with a disc by the

boys-but one cut around three years ago. Title is: "My Bonnie",and it's bound to cause of lot of interest.

But it poses certain questions.Can it harm the Beatles' reputation ? Is

to re-release something from the near -deadBeatles mind?

Listen to their Press representa-tive, Tony Barrow. "My own viewis that it can't possibly harm theboys' good name in the business.The shame is that this obviously in-ferior material should be availablefor the fans to put into their col-lections as a souvenir piece.

"That's the only difficulty. TheBeatles don't get a chance to doanything much, or anything particu-larly good, on the record. Theywere employed purely as a backinggroup for Tony Sheridan . . . andthat's exactly what they did, withinthe limits-though to the best oftheir ability."

BEAT BOYSBackground to the Polydor disc

is that the Beatles were in Germany,along with several other Britishgroups. When Tony, a popularfigure there, came up for this singlerelease, a backing group had to befound. On the original recording,the Beatles were known as the BeatBoys-on the grounds that Germanaudiences didn't know anythingabout Beatles!

In fact, Ringo Starr, currentBeetle drummer, was not on thesessions --Pete Best handled the per-cussion department. But Ringo,who was there at the time withRury Storm's outfit, did catch theeye of Tony Sheridan around this

time-and, after returning to Eng-land for a spell, did return toGermany to help back Tony for afew months.

Later, Ringo joined the Beatles asthe "new boy" of the group.

So it's not felt that the re -issueof this single can possibly harm theBeatles. This is borne out byNRM correspondent GrahamKnight, who writes of a recentBeetle performance:

SLICK"They put on a very polished

and slickly -presented act. They hadthe audience screaming again andagain as they belted out 'SomeOther Guy' and 'Please PleaseMe'. They slowed the pace to givea great performance of the Miracles'`You've Gotta Hold On Me' and,judging from audience reaction, thisone is definitely potential L.P.material.

"Their linking between numbersis excellent and their zany humourcertainly pleases audiences. Theyfurther demonstrated their versa-tility with 'I Saw Her StandingThere' and `Do Yon Wanna Knowa Secret'. They closed their actwith the huge seller 'From Me ToYou'.

"The tremendous reception andovation they received at the end

showed their absolute worthiness astops of the bill.

"Standing right next to meapplauding was Roy Orbison. Hesaid to me: They really are verygood', and he really meant it."

Nothing can dent their reputationnow.

Is the re-release fair businesstactics? Of course it is. It happensall the time. Joe Brown, when hegathered a Pye hit, had some of theearlier Decca material rushed out.Virtually every artist who changeslabels, then hits the big-time, hasthis happen to him. And it'sequally fair that the name on thelabel should be changed from theBeat Boys as on the first one toBeatles on the second-because thatwas the group's real name at thattime.

And the Beatles themselves arereported as being unworried by therelease. In other words, they don'tmind-except in hoping that thefans will realise the difference inrecording. dates and that they wereemployed purely as a backing group,not to stamp their own highly -developed personalities on thesession.

Lots of fans will want the Poly-dor release.

For anything, literally ANYthing,the Beatles do is all right bymillions of their fans.

The very talented quartet of lads from Liverpool we know as the BEATLES. This is the team whichmade the initial breakthrough and just look at what talent has emerged from the same area to fqllow intheir famous footsteps. From left to right (as if you didn't know) GEORGE, RINGO, PAUL and JOHN.

GREAT UNKNOWNS No.1 THE MARVELETTESNorman Jopling Looks At One

Of America's Top Groups1N

both the United States and Great Britain, the trend musicallyseems to be going back to the out-and-out rock and K & B.

But one aspect of the new type R & B that wasn't a feature ofthe old is the abundance of the female based vocal group singinggospelly beat numbers-and making them into big hits all overthe world. Currently in the British charts are " He's So Fine ",by The Chiffons, and "Foolish Little Girl", by The Shirelles.In the same vein is "Let's Turkey Trot", by Little Eva.

But so far at least, there is one female vocal group that, althoughit is consistently successful in the States, means virtually nothinghere. It is, of course, The Marvelettes.

Record -wise, The Marvelettespaved the way musically for DeeDee Sharp and Little Eva. Bothof these two artists' initial hits werebased on a disc by The Marvelettes.Their discs were "Mashed PotatoTime" and "The Loco -Motion" ---and The Marvelettes' disc was"Please Mr. Postman". AlthoughThe Marvelettes' disc was wayahead of its time here, in the Statesit was a huge hit, reaching numbertwo in all the charts and selling amillion on the way.

BIG FUTURETheir latest disc is "Forever",

just issued here in Britain on theOriole label, and it has just beena big hit in the States. It was inthe music classes of Inkster HighSchool, Detroit, that the four girlscame together and discovered theirmutual taste for the same kind ofmusic.

They practised until they madeperfect-and some more. It wasnot too long before Mrs. Sharpley,a teacher at Inkster High, heard

the girls as they practised duringtheir lunch breaks and after school.

She asked the four girls if theywould like to make a disc, andwhen they of course replied theywould, she took them to the "Hits -vine" recording studios, belongingto the Tamla-Motown group. Therethe four girls, lead singer GladysHorton, Katherine Anderson,Georgeanna Tillman and WandaYoung were auditioned for BerryGordy Jnr., president of the discgroup. When he heard them, Berryknew that the girls had a big futurein front of them. He wrote a songespecially for them, and it wasreleased under the title of "Please,Mr. Postman".

CANCELLEDA major hit in the States, it

quickly established the girls as theforemost female R & B performersin the country. Their disc was, infact, far more bluesy than mostfemme efforts were and still are.

The MARVELETTES got together at school and it was, in fact, a'hip' teacher who introduced them to records. The group rateshighly in America but has still to break through big in Britain. Butwith R&B on the upswing here this shouldn't take too long. Oriole

are working hard on their discs too.

The success of the group alsomeant a lot to Inkster High, whichtakes extreme pride in the accom-plishments of the group-so much,so, in fact that the principal of thehigh school cancelled the school'shomecoming game as it was evident

that the majority of the studentswould be at home watching TheMarvelettes, on their TV sets, whenthey performed on the Dick ClarkAmerican bandstand show.

When they appear on stage, thegirls have broken several attend-

ance records in Washington, D.C.,and Baltimore, and they haveappeared in shows featuring artistslike Mary Johnson, Brenda l.ee,Chubby Checker, Dion, The Bel-monts, Bobby Ryden, The Spinners,etc., plus, of course, their labelmates The Miracles, and MaryWells.

NOT WELLRecord -wise, The Marvelettes

have not fared at all well in thiscountry. Their second smash,"rwistin' Postman", was issued, aswas "Please, Mr. Postman", onFontana, bus their third smash-their second biggest hit, in fact, wasnever issued. It was entitled

"Playboy". Next was "Beechwood5-4789", and that came out onTamla's new British outlet, Oriole,who have been making a good jobof issuing the American material."Loekhe Up My Heart", "For-ever", etc. Also very interesting isthat the flip of "Beechwood", called"Someday Someway", reached veryhigh in the R & B charts, thoughnot in the single charts. It wasvirtually pure R & B.

That, then, is a short descriptionof The Marvelettes. But you haveto listen to their discs to be ableto appreciate them. And if morepeople did bother to issue theirdiscs, they wouldn't be great un-knowns any more. . . .

CHUCK BERRYDISCOGRAPHYAN entry into the top twenty L.P. charts meant quite a lot to Chuck

Berry. It meant that he is no longer a "Fallen Idol". For Chuck'ssuccess with his new Pye L.P. is the first solid concrete proof of theR & B revival. And it is fitting that it should be the great Chuck wholeads the new craze, as it was he who was one of the principal figuresof the rock craze.

But the likelihood is that many fans who have bought the value -for -money Pye L.P. do not know about Chuck's earlier releases - certainlyup until his spell in prison from which he has been recently released-he was a most prolific songster. Here then for the benefit of ChuckBerry fans, past and present, is a complete discography of his singlesand L.P.'s. Only three of Chuck' discs in fact, made the British charts.They were "Schoolday" - No. 20; "Sweet Little Sixteen" - No. 11,and "Johnny B. Goode'-No. 17.

Incidentally only three Chuck Berry L.P.'s have been issued here, twoof which are still current. I have listed the others for the benefit offans who may wish to collect his imported discs.

By the way, did I say complete discography? Well, that's not strictlytrue - Chuck recorded. for a small' Los Angeles label called Rodeobefore joining Chess, but details of what he recorded are as yet unobtain-able.

And it's a vocal . . . .

The first vocal that the boys havedone on a single for a long longtime. Not counting a gimmickyeffort titled "What A Lovely Tune"some time back, it's the first vocalthey've ventured to put out on asingle since "Saturday Dance",which was way before "Apache"-when the Shadows were just thebacking group to Britain's wonderboy Cliff Richard.

SUBTLYThen they tried experimenting

with styles, until they hit the aceon "Apache", the Jerry Lordancomposition that took them to thetop of the British charts for manyweeks. In the States though itwas covered by Jorgan Ingeman andreached the number two spot there."In a way the Shadows were farluckier than me", Jorgan said."For with their version of 'Apache'they had a style they could stickto. Me, I dubbed Red Indianwhoops and yells on my version.You can't put that on every discyou make. So my other discs wereflops in the States. But theShadows went on and on makinghits in the 'Apache' style, whetherthey were near or far from thesound, in England."

But the vocal on the flip posesanother far greater question. Arethe Shadows subtly paving the wayfor vocal top sides. And why?It's a well-known fact that theyhave been including vocal materialon their L.P.s. On their giant -sell-ing first L.P."The Shadows" they

of course, is lead guitarist and vocal. But on some of his earlier record-ings the pianist and drummer may be the people that constituted Chuck'soriginal St. Louis Combo, that is Jasper Thomas and Johnny Johnsonrespectively.

That's the list then of the most astonishing revivalist of the beat age.The odds could even be that Chuck becomes even more popular inBritain now than he ever was ....

included things like "All MySorrows" and "Baby My Heart"-both of which were extremelysmooth and well -performed. Butwith this latest well -performedeffort on the flip of a typicalShadow's single the whole balancechanges. Other aspects creep in-like has the Merseyside scene hadany influence on it ? It could wellbe, noting the success of the Merseybeat groups, but on the other handneed the Shadows bother to changetheir style-almost all their discs goto the number one spot-they arevirtually guaranteed a top fiveplacing. And it'll be a long whilebefore any of the Merseysidegroups except the Beatles can claimthat distinction.

VALUE FOR MONEY

Of course there's always the factthat the Shadows may wish to givemore value -for -money on their discs.But why not put another instru-mental, at a different tempo, on theflip-after all the people who buythe disc must be instrumental fansto buy the top side.

The title was recorded in Barce-lona and was one of a dozen othersrecorded at the same session. Itwas the only vocal and the first tobe picked for a single release. Thetop side, the Jerry Lordan composi-tion "Atlantis" was already recordedand had been scheduled for thetop side. But the actual title ofthe tune had not been picked untilthe boys were on a bus in Barcelonaand decided that "Atlantis" mightmake a good title for a disc. Itwas, say the boys, a follow-on tothe Tclstar, Polaris idea.

Yet although the Shadows employthe same sound that they had ontheir first few successful discs, theydaren't stay too close, or makemediocre discs. The fans were on

their throat when "The Savage"from the film "The Young Ones",was issued. Not only did the fansprotest in their droves, but alsosent the disc to a much lowerposition in the Charts that any oftheir others were or have beensince.

It also works the other way.When the Shadows first put a stringbacking on one of their discs,namely "Wonderful Land", the fansmade it their biggest hit since"Apache".

TOPMOSTTo my mind, though, the

Shadows won't go and stick theirnecks out and take a risk-nomatter how high the odds are. Forthey are so well established that anychange would have to be a changefor the worse. And after all theMerseyside groups have a monopolyof that certain sound.

And the Shadows have amonopoly of THEIR sound, too-despite the hundreds of imitatorsthey have still managed to keepthemselves as Britain's topmostinstrumental group.

ABC-TV New SeriesFolk, R&B Featured

CYRIL DAVIES and The Rhythmand Blues All Stars were

among the groups working thisweek on a pilot show for ABCTelevision. It's for a possible folkand r and b series to he comperedby Rory McEwen.

Cyril and the group make theirfirst appearance on "Thank YourLucky Stars" on June 21.

Cyril's pianist, Nick Hopkins,was rushed to hospital last weekwith internal trouble, and is onthe "critically ill" list. KeithScott is currently deputising forNick.

ACCORDING to the latest popularity poll run by Country MusicExpress, a British C & W fan magazine, Canadian singer HANK

SNOW tops the section called " Favourite Male Singers", whitethe late PATSY CLINE, one of the tragic victims of the Nashvilleair crash on March 5, heads the female list.

Another crash victim, Cowboy Copes, makes fourth place. Hislatest Starday single. called " Goodbye Kisses ", was actuallymailed from the company's offices at Madison, near Nashville,Tennessee, on the very morning following his death a few milesaway at Camden. Don Pierce, an old friend and sponsor of Copas,and the president of Stanley, made an embarrassed and hastyexplanation shortly afterwards, pointing out that the record hadbeen waxed well in advance of the fatal Kansas City concert-the promotion had already been started, said Don. and the single'stopkal appearance the day after was completely coincidental. Amemorial album is scheduled by Starday and will be released inLondon shortly.

The third Grand Ole Opry starinvolved in the Camden tragedy,Hawkshaw Hawkins, has onlybeen featured on two ratherobscure E.P.s, one on Vogue andone on Parlophone, and fails tomake the latest popularity poll.

Top of the country vocalgroups is a famous Brunswickduo, the Wilburn Brothers. Teddyand Doyle Wilburn, now operat-ing a music publishing businessin Nashville, graduated from afamily singing group led by theirnap. Now starring in their owntight. they have a number of finecountry L.P.s issued here, thelatest of which is "Folk Songs"(Brunswick).

The oldtimers have a field dayin the "All-time FavouriteSinger" listings, with the"Drifting Cowboy", Hank Wil-liams, high in first place. Thelegendary Jimmie Rodgers, notto be confused with the currentpop singer on the Columbialabel, is second, followed by thelate Johnny Horton, JohnnyCash, Hank Snow making onlyone of several appearances inthese findings), George Jones,Hank Thompson, Bill Monroe,Wilf Carter, otherwise known as"Montana Slim", and Capitol'spopular Ferlin Husky.

Two of the girls in the countryfield who have made the Top Tencharts regularly are the late PatsyCline, rated No. 1, and SkeeterDavis, voted No. 5. Skeeter's "Endof the World" can be found half-way up the Top 50 issued by RecordRetailer, while Patsy had a run atthe top with "1 Fall To Pieces" and"Crazy". Kitty Wells is in secondplace, followed by Wanda Jackson,Rose Maddox, Connie Hall. MargieSingleton, Harvie June Van andChickie Williams.

measure of popularity on its well -blended harmony singing groupstopped quite definitely this year bythe Witburns. Next comes the LouvinBrothers, followed by the pioneerCarter Family. The Carters, or-ganised by the late A. P. The Monroe Brothers, also listed,were really the forerunners of thebetter-known Bill Monroe Blue-grass Boys-also early, pioneer re-issues designed for the collectorrather than the pop -country fan.The Stanley Brothers, The WillisBrothers, The Delmores, andHoward Vokes' Country Boys (whomade it on the strength of onegood Starlite E.P. release over here).Last of all, and barely qualifyingfor mention because of theirbroader pop -folk style, comes thefamous Kingston Trio.

Because this is largely a specialistcountry poll which attracted veryfew pop fans, the subsidiary listsof favourite country singles. E.P.sand L.P. albums completely ignoredthe better -selling near -countryreleases like "Our Man in Nash-ville" by Chet Atkins, "From aJack to a King" by Ned Miller,or the Ray Charles Country andWestern hit albums on HMV.

More specialist and serious musiclike opera, classical, jazz, folk andcountry enjoy their largest sales inthe L.P. market, and the best tencountry L.P.s voted by the readersof Country Music Express isclearly the most interesting forthose who intend to buy good hill-billy music for their collections.No. I is called "New Favourites ofGeorge Jones" on United Artists.No. 2 is The low-priced RCA -Camden issue of Hank Snow's"Southern Cannonball", while yetanother cheap Camden release,""fhe Country Side of Jim Reeves"finds place No. 9.

'THEY ALLCOPIED US'THE first thing you notice about them is that they are quite

normal size-three average -height lads. But when they startto play-ah, that's another story. Then they become The Big Three.

They have to make a big sound when there's only three of them-no room for passengers in such a group. The biggest soundcomes from drummer Johnny, who sings the lead on most of theirnumbers and does most of the talking for the group. Johnny isfiercely proud of the group's achievements so far, and told me :" Everybody in Liverpool has copied us one way or another, andI don't mind saying it to their faces. Most of them would beglad to admit it. The Beatles used to stand and watch us singing.And The Hollies from Manchester performed a couple of ournumbers.

Not bad for a group that's onlybeen going three years. Johnnyused to buy all Gene Krupa'srecords, but never thought he'd beable to play drums like that for aliving. Then he heard the RayCharles recording of "What'd ISay ? " with Teagle Fleming ondrums, and that was it. "I decidedI'd have a go at playing myself.I've never had a lesson ; just satdown at the drums and startedplaying.

ON DISC FOR TEARSTHERE'S a very good chance that Ray Martine is the funniest

man to appear on records In Britain for years and years. He'soutrageous, razor-sharp in picking up a gag, outrageous, very con-fident (most of the time) and outrageous.

His debut L.P. "East End, West End", for Pye Piccadilly, is myevidence. ARMY"At 18, the Army. I never shot

anyone. But we had Bren gunshooting practice-in the middle ofthe worst winter for 50 years. Youshould get at least 50 out of a 104maximum. 1 got two! My fingerswere frozen to the trigger. Thebombardier shouted: `you're act-ing up!' That gave me the idea ofshow business as a career.

"Two years later, I was out. Ifthere'd been a rank lower that pri-vate, I'd have had it. I had a fewthousand more jobs then walkedinto a pub, got up and sang. Theyscreamed and hollered. So I movedon to a club, singing Nellie Lutcher-type numbers.

"I don't know how I became acomedian. I just started clowningand acting up. After three moreyears in the boozers, I, emigratedto America.

"There, I had eight quid in mypocket. More club work . . . but1 flopped in the lot. I was boughtbut I had nothing to sell.

"For nine months I went backto England. I was hated, even inmy old boozer. So hack to theStates went I.

"Back in Britain again, wherethey hated me at the Whiskey AGogo, London. But a few weekslater, I became resident compere.

"One night, in Hackney, a madactress breezed in and said shewanted to manage me. She kepton. Now she DOES manage me-her name is Pamela Manson. NowI get my hair cut by the same bar-ber as Richard Burton. Such is theprice-and you can say that again-of fame.

"Me? I dig Groucho Marx,

Terry -Thomas (because he thinksI'm the funniest man in the world),Spike Milligan and sometimesPeter Sellers. Bruce Forsyth becausehe is a first-class entertainer, andHarry Secombe, who is the best all-round man in the country.

"I've got a collection of over300 long -players and often I can'twait to get back to my pad andplay 'em.

"And my main aim? To get ashigh as I can. And you can makewhat you like of that."

What I think will happen is thatRay will make some vocal records,too. He has a swingin' style anddelivery, as you can tell from thatbig -selling comedy album of his.

He left me for a television re-hearsal. Last seen, he was rummag-ing in a litter bin in ShaftesburyAvenue, saying: "Must see ifthere's anything here for break-fast."

Flip has some good piano stylingsopening it. Then Suzy comes in onthe beaty sort of thing which ismore run-of-the-mill than the topside. Fair stuff.

Good orchestral work on the flip,a slightly slower number with arather wistful quality about it. It's afair old flip that could easily be thetop side.

Muted trumpet lead on the topside, a rather less commercial effortthan side one. Some interesting solowork on this side, and perhaps moreof the stuff we expect from Tubby.Good material once more.

Flip is rather a less commercialpiece very much in the Buddy Hollyvein, with some good patches. Thegroup have a fair sound on thiswell -performed disc-we think thatthey may well follow the others intothe charts. Like "Words Of Love".

Instead of Johnny Keating, theDownbeats accompany Eden on theflip, another ballady type numberwith a lot of appeal. But it's notreally strong enough to make thecharts by itself.

Flip has a fast backbeat on it,and some falsetto on the back-ground, and Bobby sounds verymuch like Bobby Vee on the beatything. A good value for money discwith some fair vocalising front allconcerned.

and bass thrown in-in fact every-thing thrown in.

Good sax on the flip, which is aslower sort of thing and more suitedto the girl who has made some verygood U.S. hits. She sings very wellon the number which makes up forthe top side. Great stuff with a lotof late -night -listening appeal.

TWTWTW comes the latestcomedy single. It's a gimmicky sortof thing in which Lance runs downthe glories of the South of France.Quite funny with some goodpatches, and with any luck it couldfollow the Bernard Cribbins discsof this type into the charts. Hisvoice is fair enough, and the back-ing is punchy on the medium temponumber.

Lance penned the flip, which isn'tas funny or as entertaining as thetop side. More calypso with somefair jokes and a fastish tempo.

than his current hit.

RICK NELSONString Along; Gypsy Woman(Brunswick 05889)ONE of the up-and-coming hits

in the States, this was re-corded by Fabian some timeago. It's the usual type predict-able thing with the usual RickNelson sound. That means, ofcourse, that it sounds ratherlike all of his others. Should bea hit-it's pleasant enough.

The flip is a beat number thatisn't the hit by the Impressionssome time back. It's an atmos-pheric disc with plenty of appealand a good tune.

FROM the very very consistentMr. Vaughn comes a guitar

led effort that we can't help compar-ing with "Apache" by the Shadows.It's a good teen -styled number witha hit flavour, and a good tune. Itwill sell well, we think-if it getsthe plugs it could make the charts.And there's the usual Vaughn -typeorchestral work during a break.Good commercial stuff.

Flip is Billy's adaptation of theKenny Ball hit that's doing well inthe States via the Japanese original.This one is a toned -down orchestralversion of it.

KYU SAKAMOTOSukiyaki (Ueo Muite Arukou);Anoke-No Nama-Wa Nanten-kana (HMV POP 1171)

A HUGE hit in the States, this isthe Japanese vocal version of

the Kenny Ball jazz hit here sometime ago. It's the same familiartune, with Kyu's high voice lendingitself well to the tune. Very emo-tional in parts though we can'tunderstand the lyrics. Neverthelessit's a well performed simple typeof thing that should be a hit,whether it be a small or large one.

Flip is in a rather lighter vein,with a somewhat nineteen thirtiestype backing, and a fairly jolly littlefeel to it. Tuneful and well -per-formed, it's a good flip.

Flip is very much in the samevein, but with a rather banal lyric',about the girl who is gonna betaken to "Teenage Paradise" by herfeller. Not too bad.

Good piano work on the flip,with Adam singing well on thegreat number with a good lyric. It'sa very good disc and deserves to bethe top side. Wistful and gentle,we liked it a lot.

Organ stylings on the flip-apleasing number that's well -per-formed enough. Medium tempo likethe top side but with a differentsound to it.

Flip is another teen dance num-ber with the usual frantic type beatsounds from the backing, and somefrenetic sounds from all concerned.

sings long time gone Perry onthis punchy Latin type song. Goodjerky sort of tempo with -a fair oldtune, and as usual some good sing-ing from the extremely popular voca-list. Unusual type swinging song thatshould sell well.

The flip has a harmonica on it,and the song moves at a slowertempo than side one. It's a sortof gospelly song, with Perry singingabout when he'll be home. Heasked if she's still waiting - wehope so.

This collectionemphasises h i s persuasiveness.Ultra -professional playing through-out-ranging from the Bossa Novarhythms of "Capricious" to theclash of saxophone with congadrums on "Blue Boy". If Mulliganis in top form, then so is pianistTommy Flanagan. Quietly efficientbehind the baritone sax, he be-comes forcefully brilliant on a solorun. But, essentially, this is a happyinterpretative set of ballady pieces.Mulligan's own choice? KurtWeill's "Here I'll stay".

There is sometimes a snobbery injazz which insists that any itemcommercially successful ceases to bejazz-this just isn't so, friends. Mr.Brubeck is a jazz artist first andforemost. You'll enjoy this one.

This, too, is pleasantly tinted isthe same way. Stirring arrange -meats help to make the listener situp and take enjoyable notice.

Alas, it probably won't be aminion seller, but believe Inc. plentyof folks will want to own it. I'dgive it a spin if I were you.

LEYTON BACK TJUNE 20-that 's the big date for John Leyton. That's the date

his major movie "The Great Escape" has it's world premiere,here in Britain-and in aid of charity. Perhaps the BIGGESTdate for the Hendon heart-throb.

And here's why :Johnny really loves the acting business. He tasted it in reper-

tory. He built a national name through playing "Ginger" in thatITV "Biggles" series. It was through his ACTING then that hetook up SINGING.

The hit records duly arrived at the start of a career brilliantlymanaged by Robert Stigwood. John enjoyed the screams, thehowls.

But he did also want to act.There are two ways for a popsinger to break into, or back into,the film and theatre world. One isto take a part requiring the mini -Mum of acting ability-a part lib-erally studded with songs.

The other is for him to forgetsinging entirely and go in for a

part which really requires someacting.

That second one is the hardest.It's the one John Leyton took.

RISKI remember him telling me that

filming in Germany on "The GreatEscape" was an odd experience forhim. He'd been screamed at allover Britain. But in Germany fewof the folk on the movie knew hecould sing even a note. He wasthere to act. As an actor. And hewas judged purely and simply onthat basis

If he made the odd rick ... well,he couldn't expect much sympathy.He wasn't a singer struggling toact. He was . . . an ACTOR.

Now I haven't seen the movie.Last time I talked to John aboutit, it was liable to run nearly fourhours, which is long, even for anepic. Editing and cutting were inthe final stages.

But the film moguls HAVE seenit, obviously. And they are so im-pressed with John's performancethat they've signed him on for afurther two major productions.Hints of his ability have leakedout to other companies. Now they,too, are nibbling . . .

CARTOONIt's not been easy for. John, com-

bining two careers. While he was inGermany-and the filming got waybehind schedule-his discs under-standably slipped in Britain. Hewasn't here to exploit them andthough he has one of the loyalestbunches of fans in the business-well, that wasn't enough.

He tried a cartoon process sothat his discs could still be featuredin the TV "plug" programmes. Itdidn't really work. As the months

went by, I think John realised howdifficult it would be to make thatreally big comeback to the top ofthe charts.

He couldn't do anything aboutit, of course. But he banked a gooddeal on that "Cupboard Love"number, his first on returning fromfilming. To the pleasure of a lotof people, it made the charts. Itwas a substantial success, withoutbeing sensational.

ter than in those days before he

is soon to be seen in a strong dramatic role in "THE GREATthe big screens on JUNE 20 with

John has been described asBritain's highest -paid pop singer.That includes his acting earnings.I'm not sure this is a good line totake because it can, rightly orwrongly, create touches of resent-ment among the followers of otherpop idols.

But there is no doubt that film-ing will provide him with a tre-mendous income over the next fewyears. He says himself : "That film

Well, film moguls usually aren'twrong. I see this film as being themedium for getting John across toa much wider section of entertain-ment seekers.

ing his R and B group. Membersinclude Vin Parker (piano), RoyStuart (bass), Bill Morton (bari-tone), and Ron is seeking a tenorsaxophonist. Although the groupconsists of Liverpool's leadingmodern jazz players, they won't beintroducing modern jazz into theiract.

The Four Mosts have not yetsigned a contract with BrianEpstein. However, they tell me thatthey will definitely be signing inthe near future. They intend turn-ing professional on June 28th.

The line-up and personnel of thegroup, recognised as one of Mersey-side's Top Ten groups, is asfollows: Brian O'Hara (lead), BillyHatton (bass), Mike Millward(rhythm 1, and Dave Lovelady(drums). The three guitarists, whosemain concern at the moment isdeveloping their vocal harmony,hope that drummer Dave will even-tually be persuaded to sing too.

Billy J. Kramer's former back-ing group, The Coasters, have foundthemselves a new front line vocalist- 14 -years -old Chick Graham.Chick will make his first public

appearance with the group at theMajestic Ballroom, Birkenhead, onMay 31st.

Les Ackerley, of The NorthernVariety Agencies, has severalgroups on his books, including TheSearchers, whose first record," Sweets For My Sweet," is to bereleased on June 4th.

Derry Wilkie and The Pressmenrecord for Decca on June 6th, TheSwinging Bluegenes debut disc willbe out shortly, and The Dennisons,The Undertakers, The Escorts, TheMersey Beats and The Young Onesare among the large number ofMerseyside groups who will havedisc releases in the near future.

Joe Meek wrote to me recentlydescribing his discovery of FreddieStarr and The Midnighters. " Myassistant, Dave Adams, who wasvisiting a show in London, rang meup at 12 o'clock at night, bubblingover with enthusiasm for a groupcalled 'Freddie Starr and The Mid-nighters.' I told him, if he liked, hecould fix up an audition with them,and this was arranged. After hear-ing them, I couldn't believe nobodyhad snapped them up before. Iimmediately contacted all pub-lishers to submit material for them.

It wasn't easy, choosing the rightsongs, but finally the record wasmade.

"The recording session proved tobe one I shall never forget. Freddiewas one big bundle of energy, im-personating a host of artistes, crack-ing witty jokes and performingfunny gestures all round the studio.I believe him to be one of the mosttalented young men to record at mystudio for a long time. Eachmember of the group has a finepersonality and are all greatmusicians. All I can say is I ameagerly looking forward to my nextrecording session so as to enjoysome more of that North Countrysense of humour."

"This is the best record that hasever come from Merseyside." Thatis how several prominent show bizpersonalities in London describedFaron's Flamingos disc when theyheard an acetape last week. TheA side of the disc, " See If SheCares," was written by two mem-bers of another Merseyside group,The Nomads, who are currentlyLiverpool's most sought-after song-writers.

The B side is a dynamic ren-dering of the big Stateside hit "DoYou Love Me ? "

The Flamingos are an extremelypopular group, and the line-up andpersonnel is as follows: Faron (bassguitar/vocals), Nicky Crouch (lead/rhythm/vocals), Paddy Chambers(lead/rhythm/vocals), and TrevorMorais (drums).

JOHNNY KIDD, who is atpresent based in Liverpool for

a two-week tour of the North withThe Pirates, tells me he has justrecorded his latest composition,"I'll Never Get Over You", onHMV, and is due to be releasednext month. Johnny, who is stay-ing with Lee Curtis, really digs theLiverpool scene, and is looking for-ward to playing The Cavern Club,which he reckons is the greatest.

JOHN BEDSON, leader of TheChallengers, tells me that they

will be featuring a new front-linevocalist. Reports have it that theiroriginal singer, Tommy Quickly,has been approached by the power-ful Nems Organisation.

BERYL MARSDEN, pretty 1,-year -old vocalist, may have to

cancel her Star -Club engagementdue to the forthcoming release ofher new disc from Decca. A .big.publicity campaign is being builtaround Beryl and pundits are pr,dieting her as the next big Mersey-side breakthrough in the "poi!'business.

100,000 DOLLARS . .JOAN O'BRIEN is a close personal friend of Elvis Presley. She

co-stars with his in MGM's "It Happened At the World's Fair".But the eye-opening fact is that she risked no less than 100,000dollars to accept that role-a gamble which she's delighted to sayhas already paid off.

In the movie, Joan sings just a couple of words with Elvis,right at the end. But she was once a teenage singer who appearedon some of the States' top Country 'n' Western packages.

Said Joan: "Though I've turned more to films in recent months,the fact is that I wanted to develop my adult career in two separateareas-as a dramatic actress and as a musical star.

"Well, you know how things go.Two opportunities come up right ontop of each other. And I was caughtright in the middle of it all."

ENTHUSIASMIn the middle? Well, director

Norman Taurog wanted her for "ItHappened . . ." at the very momentthat she was weighing up an offerto star in "South Pacific" in LasVegas with a minimum guaranteeof 100,000 dollars.

Joan's enthusiasm for workingwith El won her over. She turneddown the big musical project anddid the film.

"I knew the exposure I wouldreceive from the millions of peoplewho go to Elvis's films would bevery important to me in thefuture", said Joan. "I was dyingfor a chance to do 'South Pacific'because it would open a wholenew career area but I decided towait and maybe something elsewould come along."

Time proved Joan's decision cor-rect because, after testing dozensof other girl singers for the NellieForbush role which Mary Martinhad created, the Las Vegas manage-ment decided it would be better todelay the start of the show untilJoan was available. They didn'twant to risk the production by sign-ing a lesser star.

REHEARSALSSo . . . immediately after finish-

ing "It Happened at The World'sFair', Joan went into rehearsals forfor "South Pacific". The showopened to rave notices, particularlyfor Joan and was immediately ex-tended for four weeks beyond theoriginal six -week engagement.

"Naturally, I'm overjoyed thatthings have turned out just rightfor me", exclaimed the happy youngactress. "I wouldn't for the worldhave missed the opportunity ofworking with and getting to knowthe fabulous Elvis.

LOOKING astonishingly like Elvis Presley, handsome MikeEdwards occupies the rear seat of a small aircraft-his friend,

Danny Burke, up front. The craft glides sweetly through the air,behind the opening credits. ,Mike starts to sing " Beyond TheBend "-and sounds astonishingly like Elvis Presley, too.

Mike has a weakness. Women. Three kinds of women . . .

blondes, brunettes, red -heads. If there were any baldies around.they should watch out, too. Mike is well dressed in a variety ofmohairs and lightweights.

Danny's weakness is gambling. Cards, dice, horses, anything.They are pals. They are bush pilots-which means they takefree-lance jobs in their airplane, " Bessie ", and spray their crops.

But with THEIR weaknesses, they have financial ups and downs,as well as those they have in their plane.

Right now they are hovering over the potato fields of WashingtonStates, crop -dusting. Danny's mind is on his job. Mike's, temporarily,is on two blonde dishes driving an open car along a State highway.Mike put back his eyeballs and they finish the job. And they returnto base to collect their loot.

PUNCH-UPS GALOREDanny pleads for a little pay -out to indulge in gambling. Mike

refuses, but thumbs through his diary of girlie contacts. As soon asMike leaves, in search of luscious Dorothy, Danny sneaks the moneyfrom the cockpit compartment of the plane....

Meanwhile, Mike makes reasonable progress in the arms of Dorothy.He should progress . . for he sings, husky and emotionally, a delight-ful little ballad called "Relax ". The iced tea is prepared to cool himoff . . . but, out of the blue, arrive Dorothy's pa and ma. An angryduo. " Fetch my gun," roars the father. " You can't shoot him,"pleads the mother. " Fetch MY GUN," yells the father. Mikevanishes, at high-speed sprint pace, down the pathway, just a fewjumps ahead of the first blast from a shot -gun.

And, just round the corner, he hears voices raised in anger. Raisedagainst his pal, Danny, who has got involved in a card game and hasalready lost all their earnings, with other debts piled up. Mike leapsin to a thundering great fist fight, slinging some of the most spectacularright-handers of his punch-up career.

TEARS AND LAUGHTERThey mszke off . just a few jumps ahead of retribution. To the

airport, to pick up " Bessie ". Where they meet the Sheriff. Heserves them a writ of attachment against the plane-as security forvarious bills they owe money on.

Grounded pilots are idle pilots. They set out, forlornly, to hitch -hikesomewhere. Anywhere. Looking for any sort of a job. Mike carrieshis guitar-and his portable wardrobe of suits. He goes nowherewithout his duds. .

Eventually they ger a ride from Chinese farmer Ling and his littleniece, Sue -Lin, a real Oriental charmer of seven years (unless she'stravelling on a bus, when she is five). They're off to the Seattle World'sFair. Up back on the lorry, Mike borrows a ukelele from Sue -Lin anagives out with " Take Me To The Fair ", a fast, story -line number.

But Sue-Lin's laughter turns tobusiness crops up for her uncle aMike volunteers to take her roundspurred when he notes a spectacularground unattached.

tears at the Fair. Unexpectedd he can't take her to the show.

SNATCH A KISSThey sample every ride Sue-Lini samples every type of food and

sweet -stuff. And develops a pain her Oriental tummy. Together,they go off to the dispensary to g t some medicine.

Mike is concerned. But his connern reaches new heights when henotes the contours and attractiveness of Nurse Diane Warren. Suddenlyhe develops "something in my eye" in order to get near enough thenurse to snatch a kiss.

Diane is unmoved. She doesn't like his rush technique. Mike, foronce, makes little progress. But at least Sue -Lin feels a whole lot better.

Meanwhile, Danny has been searching for a rather shady characternamed Vince Bradley . guy usually well enough loaded to help thepals out of financial stickiness. But Danny has also been busy on thegambling side. . . .

Mike and Sue -Lin return tp the monorail station at the Fair to findthat Danny has "won" a station wagon and a mobile home in whichthey can live Nice pickings from a quick game or two of gin rummy.

ROMANCE IN THE AIRMike breaks off to sing "They Remind Me Too Much Of You ",

with a delicate piano backing. That' shows how much he's thinking ofthat pretty nurse. And on the veranda of the mobile home be worksover " One Broken Heart For Salo ", which shows a bit more howmuch he's ruminating on the ministering angel.

Next day, Mike wanders round ttie Fair, alone. How best to meet

the nurse again ? He hires a small boy to kick him on the ankle.And limps towards the dispensary. After initial doubts, Diane findsit a pleasant enough re -union, and she joins him for dinner. Duringwhich he serenades her with " I'm Falling In Love Tonight ".

Romance is in the air. All over the air. Seeping in everywhere.

But that little boy turns up artd asks if Mike would consider"buying" another kick on the ankle.! Mike demurs . . but gets kickedjust the same. Romance is out of the air. Seeping OUT everywhere.

Enter Sue -Lin Tearful again. i Her uncle has disappeared; hasfailed to return from his business. iMike takes the little girl back tothe mobile home, croons her to sleep via " Cotton Candy ", then startsa police search for the missing Uncle V/alter.

There are no doubts in Sue-Lin's inind as to what to do. She knowsshe must fake an illness in order to glet Diane back with Mike Anotherre -union is staged The romance bit is back in the air

SMUGGLING!But . ger-doinggg ! It doesn't last long. A child welfare officer

turns up to take away Sue -Lin and reveals that Diane "tippedthe department. More trouble for Mike, especially as he'd just finissinging "A World Of Our Own " straigf; at Diane I

Meanwhile. back at the' fAirground ranch, "Danny has foundhoodlum friend, who advances the money to get the plane outcustody . . in exchange for flying sonic "freight" to Canada.Sue, he sings " How Would YOU Like ;'o Be ? "-Mike. thatDanny doesn't sing I

waiting to meet him in the fairground. They meet, elude the police. and he takes the girl to the airport, hoping to fly her with him

to CanadaBut it turns out the cargo is . . . stolen. The boys are involved in

smuggling.

GOOD NEWSAnother punch-up. Witb Mike slinging a right upper -cut to dispose

of Vince Bradley. An upper -cut that Sonny Liston would admire.Law, right, order-they triumph. And the news stays good. Uncle

Walter has been traced to a nearby hospital and is not badly injured.What's more Diane is cleared of the "informing" charge-it wasDanny, after all, but he bad acted with the best of intentions.

Arm in arm, Diane and Mike take another stroll round the SeattleFair. They're now in love. For good, obviously. But they lovetheir country as well, and they become enlistees in the U.S. aero-spaceprogramme-she as nurse, he as pilot.

With a whopping great brass band all round them, Mike sings" Happy Ending ". Which is exactly what they deserve, after theirlengthy series of " ups and downs."

couple of tracks. Then a switch to tender ballad.He closes side one with his recent single hit, "One Broken Heart

For Sale"Side two opens in quieter mood and continues with "Cotton Candy

Land", which seems specially designed for the very young fan-but Ibet all El's followers will dig it.

Mostly ballady, this side, but El closes on a lively "Happy Ending",an appropriate title if ever there was.

The verdict ? Another winner, naturally, as the Top Twenty LPcharts already show. Certainly a "must" for all Presley tans, andthere are more than enough of these around the country to keepthe album in the best sellers for many a long week, or month, oreven year. J.W.

WHILE making MGM's "It Happened At The World's Fair",Elvis Presley did a little personal stock -taking. About how he

was now 28 years old, at the top of the world show business tree. . . but had never got particularly near to taking the plunge. Togetting married.

For a third of his life, millions of feminine hearts have goneall fluttery. Hearts in America, Britain, Japan, even Iceland.

Said Elvis: "It's not that I don't want to get married. I knowmost bachelors say just this but the truth for me is that I've notyet met the right girl.

"Of course, maybe I have alreadymet the girl I'll eventually marryand don't know it. But all I cansay right now is that there isNOBODY who is Number One,although I'll say there are a lot ofgirls whose company I enjoy."

But let's dig deeper. Elvis issurely the most eligible bachelor inHollywood. He's probably in theworld's top three in that category.His earnings have been around theten million dollar mark. And evenhis worst knockers would admit hehas a knack with a love song . . .

Some friends claim that the realreason Elvis hasn't dived intomatrimony is because his religiousbeliefs and his home training havemade him very conscious of theseriousness of the marriage vows.He has never been the type to makea move on the spur of the moment-not in anything, let alone mar-riage.

But what will he look forbefore he buys any girl a weddingring? "A lot of things much moreimportant to me than beauty", hesays.

"We'd have to have similartastes. She'd have to be a goodconversationalist. And she wouldbe the home type who would puta family above everything else inher life.

"Also, and this is very important,she would have to be the type ofgirl who could adjust to my kindof life. Things like going to a pub-lic restaurant would be OUT. She'dhave to realise that it's not alwaysa lot of fun being recognised andmobbed-though of course it is stillvery flattering, no matter how usedto it you get."

Elvis paused for breath. He waswarming to his subject. "No, thisgirl and I would soon find out onlysocialising would have to be in ourown home or at the home offriends. The way things are, I haveto do a lot of travelling. I haveto divide my home life betweenHollywood and Memphis.

"I fully appreciate that it's noteasy to ask someone to share alife with all these restrictions."

In the past Elvis has beenlinked romantically by Hollywoodcolumnists with almost every lead-ing lady he has worked with, in-cluding Joan O'Brian, the shapelyyoung star who co-stars with himon "It Happened At The World'sFair".

Said Elvis: "When you worktogether some nine or ten hours aday, you find a lot of things totalk about and you become natur-ally friendly. But it's nothingserious, that's for sure.

"You know something? I'm aslikely to marry a girl from rightin the middle of nowhere as aHollywood actress. In fact, some-one like that might be morewilling to settle for a quiet life.

"Hey, now! Careful how youphrase that last quote. I don't wantit to seem that I'm being criticalof Hollywood actresses. Most ofthem are great girls, extremelyhard workers-and I get a kickout of being with them. Speciallythe ones who've worked with meon movies."

Elvis is always careful how hespeaks. He chooses his wordssometimes with hesitancy, determ-ining to say exactly what hemeans and not be rushed intomaking an error which could bemisinterpreted. After all, he is

quoted just about as widely as thePresident of the United States.

But he admits that he has to bevery careful when he is introducedto a new girl. There are plenty ofnice girls around but there are alsoplenty of opportunists who wouldbe only too happy to marry for ashare of Elvis's accumulated wealth-or to use a romance with himas a springboard for her owncareer.

Says Elvis: "Over the years, youlearn to size up people. I canusually spot a phoney right away.It's a knack I've picked up duringmy years in show business. And Ipride myself on rarely havingmade a mistake."

It may seem a perpetual bed ofroses to be the world's top popstar. But there are thorns. Plentyof thorns. And Elvis does a greatjob in avoiding them.
