ABOUT Epsom & Ewell U3A Jazz : Many U3As have jazz appreciation and discussion groups, but while we certainly appreciate jazz, but just a discussion group we are not! We like the pre-war jazz styles and we are more akin to a wide ranging jazz club with jazz concerts, talks by leading professional jazz speakers, jazz movies, coach outings and audio/ visual explorations of traditional, swing and classic jazz. The U3A national jazz organiser talking about U3A jazz appreciation groups described us as one of the 2 or 3 jazz groups which are “something else”. We enjoy listening to and delving into the history of the pre WW2 jazz styles. Our kind of jazz is about entertainment and enjoying good music in good company. We lay on tea and cakes for our tea break giving a chance to chat with members, musicians and speakers about jazz, the weather, or whatever you fancy. We are an informal group who love the pre-war hot jazz styles from New Orleans through to Swing. New members are always welcome in our well equipped church hall, with live jazz concerts usually held in the church itself. Tickets are usually £5, but sometimes more to pay musicians for live concerts. Refreshments are included and often a free raffle as well. Just come along to see if you enjoy our presentations of hot jazz music. If you like cool or progressive jazz, please give us a try but if you find our jazz too hot, other U3As have groups who are cooler than us. We usually meet monthly on ther second Tuesday at All Saints Church, West Ewell from 1.30 to 4.15 pm. There is no commitment on members to organise meetings, but help with setting up chairs and tables and putting away afterwards and all important catering and administration is always appreciated. Come and enjoy our friendly group with a common interest in the pre-war jazz styles of music, from the very beginning through to big band swing and the new younger bands playing our style of jazz. After two trial visits you will need to join the U3A (£15 pa is the annual sub for Epsom & Ewell U3A, but membership of your local U3A is equally acceptable). Being a U3A educational group enables us to use much copyrighted film and music - and we get other benefits of being U3A members with lots of interesting groups to join and essential public liability insurance cover - so please join the U3A, and bring your membership card with you, after your first two visits! Mike Leader - contact me at 31 Wallace Fields, KT17 3AX, Phone or Text me on 0791 3655 458 or email [email protected]

The exhibition closes Sunday 22 April 2018. See jazz paintings, ceramics, instruments, photos, newsreels, books, prints, cartoons in a wonderful

setting at Two Temple Place. The fabulously rich Lord Astor built this as his London Office – he built Cliveden as his country residence.

A final quote in tribute to Sir Ken Dodd, the last of the Vaudeville comedians, who died on March 11, age 90: “What a

beautiful day!” he would cry, “A wonderful day to beat a big drum, in true trouper style, in a shaggy red greatcoat or a mustard-yellow suite.

(My tailor is colour blind)” Repairman: “On Friday there was a tap on the door - Funny sense of humour, that plumber”.
