    The economy of Bihar is mainly based onagricultural and trading activities. The soil of Bihar is extremely fertile which makes it ideal foragriculture. Bihar is now part of the economicallyemerging states of the Hindi speaking northernIndia. As of 2008, agriculture accounts for 35%,industry 9% and service 55% of the economy of thestate. In the year 2002-2006, Manufacturing sectorperformed very poorly in the state, with an averagegrowth rate of 0.38% compared to India's 7.8%.However, due to efforts of Chief Minister NitishKumar who made 'development with justice' an aimof the state, Bihar has become the second bestmanufacturing state in India. Bihar's GDP recorded agrowth of 20% (10,00,000 Crores Rupees ($23

    billion nominal GDP)) between 2009-2010. This makes Bihar the fastest growing major state, with itsGDP ranked at 2nd out of 28 states.

    India is the second largest producer of fresh vegetables in the world (ranks next to China)and Bihar is the leading state in the production of fruits and vegetables in India. It is the first

    largest producer of vegetables and second largest producer of fruits in the country.Bihar has significant levels of production for mango, maize, sugarcane, litchi, makhana, vegetables,and aromatic rice in India. Bihar is the largest producer of honey in the country.
