Big Kirk Hallam Community CentreWelcome to AlisyaAlisya Hill has been appointed as the Community Development Worker/Administrator based at the Community Centre. Alisya starts work on 5 June, so pop along to the Community Centre and have a chat with her. She is really eager to meet as many of you as she can and listen to your ideas of what is needed in Kirk Hallam. We will have an interview with her in our next newsletter, when she will tell us what her first few months in post have been like and what she has achieved so far.

RESULTS OF OUR SURVEYWe had a good response to our survey with support for all of the following:

Community café; bookswap, advice sessions, banking/credit union; meeting rooms for self-help groups; breakfast club; DIY classes; film club; parent and toddler groups; help with filling in forms; food bank and clothing bank; help with computers and smartphones; cookery classes; exercise groups; arts and craft sessions; job hunting; tea dances; community choir.

We also received the following suggestions: table top sales; gardeners’ club; friendship club; bereavement information; adult education classes; companion club. There were also some queries and concerns about the potential for noise impact, in particular from residents who live close to the community centre, and questions about the funding. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the survey. Alisya and Jsan will work through all the suggestions.

Community Café: We are working with UChoose to progress the community café – keep checking on our website and social media sites for the opening date.

JOB OPPORTUNITY: Caretaker/Cleaner 20 hours a week

Unfortunately the Big Kirk Hallam Community Centre was not able to appoint to the caretaker/cleaner role, so there is still a vacancy for a caretaker/cleaner working 20 hours a week at £8.25 per hour. The position will involve some weekend and evening work.

The job description can be viewed on our website at bigkirkhallam.wordpress.com or by sending a stamped addressed envelope to Reverend Christine French at the address shown in the orange panel on the right.

How to applyPlease send your CV, a letter stating how you meet the requirements of the post and details of two current references to:

Reverend Christine French, The Vicarage, 71 Ladywood Road, Kirk Hallam, Ilkeston, DE7 4NF. Closing date for applications is 12noon on 30 June 2017.

As we go to press the sign for the Big Kirk Hallam Community Centre has been ordered but has not yet been installed. Above is a sneak preview of what it will look like (the magic of technology!)

We hope you like the strapline, which is:

“The community working together to make a lasting difference.”

A SIGN of things to come!

YOUR LETTERS TO BIG KIRK HALLAMWe have received letters from four Year 6 young learners at Ladywood Primary School. Here is one of them:

Keep in touch!

WEBSITE BIGKIRKHALLAM.WORDPRESS.COMBIG KIRK HALLAM NEWSLETTER

Throughout 2016/17, the Big Kirk Hallam has

given Ladywood many opportunities. First of

all the Grandparents dinner where you can

eat and talk to your loved ones. Then we do

the savers bank in a morning where you can

save up money and carry it on even after

Year 6.

Big Camp Out was one of the best (even

though it was quite cold!) We got the chance

to make our own clean water out of dirty

water, eat bugs and do archery. One more

was Drumba. That was the best gift for

doing our SATS.

Thank you

Olivia Burrows

Wow! Great article Olivia. The Drumba (right) looked like fun!

Following the article in the last newsletter asking for comments from grandparents about the lunch, we received the following from Debra Ward who attended a lunch at Dallimore Primary School:

We would like to thank Dallimore School and Big Kirk Hallam for our ‘Grandparents lunch’ on Friday the 5th of May. We had a lovely time. It was ‘Fishy Friday’ so we enjoyed fish, chips and a lovely fresh side salad, with fresh fruit for pudding. Scarlett was very excited to have her Grandparents there, and was showing us what to do in the dinner queue and hall. She even insisted I sit on one side of her and her Granddad sit the other side. It was lovely to see how nice the school environment is, and I was pleased to see all the displays on anti-bullying and how the children need to care about, and be kind to one another. It was also really nice to see the Head Teacher sitting having lunch and chatting with some of the children.

What a great experience, thanks again!

You’re welcome Debra – glad you and Scarlett had a lovely time.

New member Alex HarrisAlex contacted us after seeing in the last newsletter that we had vacancies for residents on the Partnership Group. Here’s what she said.

I live in Kirk Hallam and am a community nurse for the Ilkeston area, which includes Kirk Hallam. I have two children who both go to Ladywood School. As I have these links to the community I would like to help make decisions as to how the Big Lottery money is allocated. I would like to join the community partnership group to offer any help I can, supporting the group to make decisions and helping with ideas for future projects. I have previously enjoyed being a parent volunteer for the Sure Start Centre where I organised the first children’s fun day with funding from Big Kirk Hallam and would like to continue to see increased activities for the residents. I care about the area and would like to see improvements to it that would benefit everyone.

Welcome aboard Alex – it’s great to have you on the Partnership Group
