Great Birthdays Start Here

Start the day with a birthday surprise. Consider a special breakfast of pancakes with a “Happy Birthday, Joe!” message in whipped cream or stuff balloons in a closet that tumble out when your child opens the door.

Make a birthday chair covered in balloons, streamers and cards that your child can sit in to eat meals and open presents.

Make it a team effort. Ask family, friends and even the birthday child, if he is old enough. Jobs like filling gift bags, blowing up balloons, or even baking the cake can be delegated to family members or willing friends.

Make ahead. Filling goodie bags (make extras in case of unexpected guests), hanging up decorations, even baking the cake a week ahead and freezing it, will make the big day so much more relaxing.

If you are serving food to young children, keep it simple and familiar. Pizza, chicken nuggets or grilled cheese are good choices.

Take a picture of your child and each party guest that you can include in the thank you note.

When planning activities, choose games that will be age appropriate. Keep in mind that the younger children do not do well if they have to wait in line for their turn but older kids can.

Ten tips for putting together a celebration of growing older so that everyone – honoree and parents – will have a fun time.

If you have the party at home in late spring, summer or fall, do it outdoors! Give all the kids some bubbles and Frisbees (water guns if it’s warm enough) and they’re happy in the backyard.

Have a backup plan for activities that don’t work out, food that runs out, or sick kids.

Take a deep breath. Remember what your child will pick up is your mood. Your child won’t remember if the party decorations aren’t exactly how you planned. What they will remember is your smile and good humor.

The birthday cake is always the center of the party. No matter what age, your child blowing out the candles on his or her cake will be a staple in every photo album.

Modern birthday cakes have become over the top and extravagant – not only the designs but also the price tags. We have found some great birthday cakes that are easy to make, won’t bust your budget and will wow the crowd.

Simple and Easy Birthday Cakes

n Dino CakeUsing two 8- or 9-inch round cake pans, bake cake mix as

directed. Refrigerate or freeze for 30 to 60 minutes to allow for easier handling. Cut the dinosaur body out of the cake and use remaining cake to cut head and tail. Arrange head and tail pieces next to body. Frost cake with green icing and decorate using assorted candies. Source: bettycrocker.com (search for dino cake)

n Jersey CakeGreat for any sport themed party. Customize and

decorate to resemble your own child’s jersey or a famous athlete’s. Bake desired flavor in a 13x9 pan and refrigerate for 30 to 60 minutes. Frost the entire cake with jersey color frosting and pipe on details like team name and number. Source: bettycrocker.com

n Robot cake Make this cute

cake for your child’s robot or space themed bash. Made from two 13x9 in pans, cut the shape of the robot out and attach to a cardboard box using frosting. Decorate using assorted candies like sour patch straws, Twizzlers and M&M’s. Add some wheels made of chocolate wafer cookies. Source: Wendy Thorpe Copley, wendolonia.com (search for robot birthday party)

n Rainbow sprinkle cakeOne of the simplest ways to decorate a cake, using sprinkles, can be the

most show stopping. Bake and layer two or three round cakes and “glue” to-gether with icing. Coat the cake with a layer of icing. Let cake chill and cover a shallow tray with rainbow sprinkles or any type of sprinkles. Roll the cake in the sprinkles or press the sides of the cake with sprinkles until fully covered. Tips for top quality cakes

n Drop your cake from a foot above the counter before baking to bust any lurking air bubbles.

n Leave slices of bread on cakes while they cool to keep them from drying out. Source: bakedbree.com

n Freeze wrapped cake layers ahead of time and assemble the day of the party.

n Funfetti cake is easy to make from scratch; just add sprinkles to your favorite white cake batter.

n Tip for easy frosting: Start with lots of frosting on top and smooth the extra out from the center to cover the sides.

n You can melt store-bought frosting in the microwave and pour over a cake for easy, super-smooth frosting. Source: sweetcsdesigns.com

n Simplified Barbie cake Wrap your Barbie’s body and hair in plastic wrap

to protect from the icing process. For the bottom use a bundt pan, for the middle use a heat-proof pyrex bowl, and for the top layer use a cupcake pan. Bake cake flavor of your choice in each container. Cut a hole in the middle cake for Barbie’s legs and layer the three cakes making sure to “glue” together with icing. Ice the cake first with a rough layer then with a star tip applicator. This cake will surely delight the Barbie lover in your life. Source: imperfectwomen.com (search for Barbie cake)

n Butterfly Cake Bake two 8- or 9-inch round cakes.

Wrap and freeze one layer for later use. Freeze remaining layer 45 minutes before cutting to reduce crumbs. Cut off rounded top of cake to make flat surface; place cake cut side down. Cut cake in half crosswise; cut each half into 1/3 and 2/3 pieces. Place cake pieces on platter to form butterfly. Ice the cake and decorate the wings and body with sugar crystals, jelly beans and other candy decorations.

Birthday Games Revampedby Camille Moore

Frustrated with trying to find new and exciting birthday games for your child’s next party? Games are a helping hand for a successful party after that delicious birthday cake. Here are some new and fresh game ideas that will have your guests feeling like winners.

Spin on Classic Birthday Gamesn Pin the Tail. The donkey may be sore after decades of getting pinned on the tail. Try pinning the patch on the pirate, or pinning Olaf with his hat.

n Disk Tic-Tac-Toe. This twist on tic-tac-toe involves a shower curtain, disks and a sunny sky. Create a life-size tic-tac-toe board with duct tape. Use different colored disks to throw. Follow the rules of traditional tic-tac-toe.

n Toppling Tug-of-War. This will require rope, milk crates and a good sense of balance! Separate the party-goers into two teams. Players will stand on crates placed six feet apart on grass and attempt to force their opponent off the crate.

Different Games to Tryn Scavenger Hunt. Children love finding treasures, especially in a hunt. If it’s a theme party have the treasures match the party theme. If it’s a traditional birthday party the choices can be endless. Have a checklist of the items hidden to make sure they are found.

n Charades. Charades are fun because of the interaction and creativity involved. An optional way to play is to limit the theme; creature charades, TV shows, movies and many more.

n Yard Maze. If your child’s has a fall birthday they can help with those fallen leaves. Make a maze-like path through the fallen leaves and have the children race through. Time the racers. Use rope, grass clipper and rake to create maze.
