A Big 12 Conference All-Star Team represented the United States in2003 at the 22nd World University Games women’s basketball competitionAug. 20-31, in Daegu, South Korea.

Team USA finished 6th of 17 teams in the highly-competitive interna-tional competition.

The World University Games, held every two years and organized bythe International University Sports Federation (FISU), is a multi-sport com-petition open to men and women between the ages of 17 and 28 (bornbetween Jan. 1, 1973 and Dec. 31, 1985) and who are, or have beenwithin the past year, a student at a college or university.

Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly served as head coach of the team.Missouri head coach Cindy Stein and ISU assistant coach Latoja Harriscompleted the staff. Dru Hancock, Big 12 Associate Commissioner, servedas the conference liaison and ISU senior associate media relations directorErin Rosacker was media coordinator.

Team members included: Steffanie Blackmon, Baylor; Tera Bjorklund,Colorado; LaToya Davis, Texas Tech; Kate Fagan, Colorado; Erin Grant,Texas Tech; Anissa Hastings, Texas; Alexa Johnson, Nebraska; Anne O’Neil,Iowa State; Heather Schreiber, Texas; Evan Unrau, Missouri; Chelsi Welch,Oklahoma; and Toccara Williams, Texas A&M.

This marked the third Big 12 Conference women’s all-star team andthe sixth overall. Big 12 men completed tours in 1998, 2000 and 2002. Thefirst women’s all-star team went 5-1 in 1999 while playing games inFinland and Sweden. The 2001 Big 12 women’s squad was 5-0 in its tourthrough Austria, Germany and the Slovak Republic.

Game 1 -- Team USA 62, Hungary 56DAEGU, South Korea -- Despite a slow start and close finish, Team

USA got a 62-56 win over Hungary under its belt in the preliminary roundsof the World University Games. Team USA hit five-of-six free throws inthe final minute to ice the game.

Heather Schreiber (Texas) led the team with 22 points and sevenrebounds. Annissa Hastings (Texas) was the top rebounder with eight.Team USA outrebounded Hungary 37-19.

Game 2 -- Italy 81, Team USA 64GYEONGJU, South Korea -- Team USA dropped to 1-1 in preliminary

action at the World University Games with an 81-64 loss to Italy. TeraBjorklund (Colorado) tallied her first points of the Games with a layup tostart off Team USA’s scoring, but 17 first-half turnovers helped the Ital-ians gain a lead they would not relinquish.

Heather Schreiber (Texas) once again led the U.S. squad with 21points.

Game 3 -- Team USA 104, Thailand 63DAEGU, South Korea -- Team USA rounded out pool play with a 104-

63 win over Thailand to up its record to 2-1. Thailand’s average heightwas 5-7, with no player taller than 5-11, thus enabling the Americans toa 49-19 rebounding advantage. Team USA’s offense was fueled by fastbreaks and 55.6 percent accuracy from within the arc.

Four Americans scored in double digits, led by Heather Schreiber’s(Texas) game-high 23 points. LaToya Davis (Texas Tech) tallied 20 points,while Evan Unrau (Missouri) and Anne O’Neil (Iowa State) added 13each. Unrau grabbed nine boards and Schreiber dished seven assists.

Game 4 -- China 97, Team USA 54KYOUNGJU, South Korea -- China’s seasoned offense was no match

for Team USA in the first game of second round pool play at the WorldUniversity Games, winning the game 97-54. China outscored the US 53-24 in the second half and shot a sizzling 61 percent for the game.

Chelsi Welch (Oklahoma) came off the bench and drilled 5-of-7 three-pointers in the fourth quarter to finish with a team-high 15 points. HeatherSchreiber (Texas) was the only other U.S. player in double figures with10 points.

Game 5 -- Serbia-Montenegro 74, Team USA 61DAEGU, South Korea -- Team USA’s cold second-half shooting perfor-

mance allowed Serbia-Montenegro to capture a 74-61 win in the WorldUniversity Games. The USA hit just 27.3 percent from the floor and wasoutscored 45-26 in the second half.

Heather Schreiber (Texas) finished with a game-high 19 points and ateam-best nine rebounds. Tera Bjorklund (Colorado) added 16 points.Team USA committed only 13 turnovers but was beaten on the glass 40-32.

Game 6 -- Team USA 72, Czech Republic 56DAEGU, South Korea -- Four players scored in double figures to lead

Team USA to a 72-56 win over the Czech Republic. The Americans closedout the first half on a 14-0 scoring run that gave them a 42-33 advantageand then used an 8-0 run to end the game.

Heather Schreiber (Texas) and Annissa Hastings (Texas) led the teamwith 19 and 18 points, respectively. Hastings contributed 13 reboundsand Evan Unrau (Missouri) grabbed 10 to help the U.S. to a 40-23 re-bounding advantage.

Game 7 -- Serbia-Montenegro 72, Team USA 70KYOUNGJU, South Korea -- Team USA and Serbia-Montenegro squared

off in a rematch in the World University Games, playing for fifth place.Serbia-Montenegro pulled off a 72-70 win that featured seven tied scores.Free throws made the difference in the game as Serbia-Montenegro con-verted 19-of-22 while the USA made just six trips to the line, sinking three.

Heather Schreiber (Texas) led all scorers with 25 points while EvanUnrau (Missouri) and Annissa Hastings (Texas) added 12 and 10 points,respectively. Schreiber drained 5-of-7 treys in the game.

Game 4 -- Big 12 All-Stars 89, TV Bonsburg City 47COLOGNE, Germany -- Missouri junior Kerensa Barr netted a tour-high

16 points in just two quarters of play to lead the Big 12 All-Stars to an 89-47win over TV Bonsburg City.

In addition to Barr, four other players scored in double figures. DanielleCrockrom (Baylor) recorded another double-double with 15 points and 11rebounds. LaNeishea Caufield (Oklahoma) tallied 13 points, followed byTracy Cook (Texas) with 10 points and nine rebounds, and Shelby Hutchens(Oklahoma State) with 10 points.

Game 5 -- Big 12 All-Stars 121, TSU Hagen 64HAGEN, Germany -- The Big 12 All-Stars wrapped up their 2001 tour

with a 121-64 win over TSU Hagen.Six players scored in double figures, led by Nebraska’s Steph Jones

who had her tour-high of 21 points. Danielle Crockrom (Baylor) registeredher fourth double-double of the tour with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Otherdouble-digit scorers were: Shelby Hutchens (Oklahoma State) 17 points,LaNeishea Caufield (Oklahoma) 11 points, and Kristin Rethman (KansasState) and Tracy Cook (Texas) with 10 points each.

The 2001 Big 12 Women’s Basketball All-Star team cruisedto a perfect 5-0 record on its August tour through Europe.

This year was the fourth that the Big 12 sponsored eithera men’s or women’s basketball all-star tour. The 2001 squadwas the first one to go undefeated although it played oneless game than the previous three squads due to an oppo-nent cancellation.

Colorado head coach Ceal Barry and her support stafftraveled with the team, as did Big 12 Associate Commis-sioner Dru Hancock. Eleven Big 12 teams were representedon the 2001 All-Stars. Texas Tech did not send a student-athlete due to a conflict with its own foreign tour. Team mem-bers included: Danielle Crockrom, Baylor; Mandy Nightingaleand Sabrina Scott, Colorado; Angie Welle, Iowa State; KCHilgenkamp, Kansas; Kristin Rethman, Kansas State; KerensaBarr, Missouri; Steph Jones, Nebraska; LaNeishea Caufield,Oklahoma; Shelby Hutchens, Oklahoma State; Tracy Cook,Texas; and LaToya Rose, Texas A&M.

The 2001 All-Stars played games in Austria, Germany andthe Slovac Republic. Following is a brief synopsis of eachgame on the tour.

Game 1 -- Big 12 All-Stars 82, Klosterneuburg Teko78 (OT)

KLOSTERNEUBURG, Austria -- In the closest game inBig 12 women’s all-star tour history, the 2001 squad camefrom 11 points down in the second half to defeat profes-sional squad Klosterneuburg Teko 82-78 in overtime.

Colorado guard Mandy Nightingale led all scorers with 25points, followed by Oklahoma’s LaNeishea Caufield andBaylor’s Danielle Crockrom with 15 apiece. Tracy Cook ofTexas had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds while IowaState’s Angie Welle had 13 rebounds to tie for the game-high.

Game 2 -- Big 12 All-Stars 69, Lokomotiva Bratislava 57BRATISLAVA, Slovak Republic -- The Big 12 All-Stars scored their

second win of the 2001 tour on the strength of double-digit scoring effortsfrom three seniors to defeat Lokomotiva Bratislava 69-57.

Seniors Danielle Crockrom (Baylor), Angie Welle (Iowa State) and KristinRethman (Kansas State) all hit double figures with 13, 14 and 11 points,respectively in the dominating win. Crockrom earned her first double-doubleof the tour also grabbing 11 rebounds while Mandy Nightingale (Colorado)dished out a game-high seven assists.

Game 3 -- Big 12 All-Stars 113, Bonn All-Stars 62BONN, Germany -- Seniors Angie Welle (Iowa State) and Danielle

Crockrom (Baylor) scored 27 and 19 points, respectively to lead the Big 12All-Stars to their third straight win 113-67 over the Bonn Sportstadt All-Stars.

The Big 12 led 44-31 at intermission before erupting for 37 third quarterpoints and 32 in the fourth quarter.

The Big 12 Conference sponsored its firstwomen’s basketball All-Star Team in 1999.

The tour was organized by Bill Foster, formerBig 12 basketball consultant, and DickHalterman, head coach at Oklahoma State. OSUserved as the host school for the All-Star Tour. Inaddition to Halterman, his assistant coaches andsupport staff traveled with the team.

A student-athlete from each of the Big 12teams was chosen for the squad. OSU placedtwo players on the team as Colorado was notrepresented due to a conflict with the Buffs’ ownforeign tour.

The 1999 team was comprised of NicoleCollins (Baylor), Jennifer Crow (Oklahoma State),Tracy Franklin (Missouri), Jaclyn Johnson (Kan-sas), Devon Magness (Oklahoma State), CoriMcDill (Nebraska), Nicky Ramage (Kansas State),Melinda Schmucker (Texas Tech), Prissy Sharpe(Texas A&M), Megan Taylor (Iowa State), PhyleshaWhaley (Oklahoma) and JoRuth Woods (Texas).

The All-Stars compiled a 5-1 record on the11-day tour through Finland and Sweden playingboth club and national teams from those twocountries in addition to a team from Russia. Theteam’s lone loss was to the Finnish NationalTeam.

Whaley led the team in scoring and rebounding with 13.8 ppgand 5.3 rpg. Woods and Johnson also registered double-figurescoring with 12.0 ppg and 11.2 ppg, respectively. Collins dishedout a team-high 23 assists and Crow nabbed a team-best 14steals.

The All-Stars out-scored opponents by a 17.2 average per gameand outrebounded them by a 12.5 average.

The Big 12 Conference sponsored men’s All-Star Teams in1998 and 2000. The 1998 squad went 4-2touring London, Paris, Belgium and Germany, while the 2000 teamcompiled a 5-1 record playing teams from Austria.
