    ISSUE 50, April 15, 2016

ast week I shared about the importance of each of our students experiencing a sense of belonging in ouchool community and the benefits thereof. Research shows that developing a sense of belongingness is cruciaor our  student’s future success. However, it is not enough for our students to feel valued, accepted, includend encouraged by others in the classroom setting. We desire for our   student’s   to see themselves as a

mportant and active part of our community so that they will then take action beyond our school communityWe ultimately desire for our students to develop a sense of  ‘global belonging’.

ow does one belong to something that is global? Global often includes the concepts of international (betweend among nations, and even transcending national borders) and intercultural (referring often to culturafferences at home and around the world). To belong to something signifies membership or citizenshipherefore, many see global belonging as being synonymous with   “global citizenship”. Global citizenship is hoice and a way of thinking. National citizenship is an accident of birth; global citizenship is different. It is oluntary association with a concept that signifies "ways of thinking and living within multiple cross-cuttinommunities - cities, regions, states, nations, and international  collectives”. People come to consider themselves global citizens through different formative life experiences and have different interpretations of what it meano them. The practice of global citizenship is, for some, exercised primarily at home, through engagement iobal issues or with different cultures in a local setting. For others, global citizenship means firsthand experienc

ith different countries, peoples, and cultures  – such as our  student’s experiences at BIFS! For most, there existconnection between the global and the local. Whatever an individual's particular "take" on global citizenshi

may be, that person makes a choice in whether or how to practice it. Fundamentally, global citizenship is abouelf-awareness and awareness of others.

lobal citizenship matters as it uses the vehicles of internationalization and international education as the tooo encourage students to consider their responsibilities to their communities, institutions, and society. Audent’s become active and engaged in the world, their sense of belonging deepens and a virtuous cycle reated. This is what our world needs, this is what we want from our BIFS students. This is part of the BIF

mission. Won’t you join us as we seek to strengthen our global citizenship? It all starts with a simple choice t

make a small difference today, and each day, in our world!

NWEA MAP Testing for Grades 2 - 9

uring April and May, children in grades 2 - 9 will take tests called Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®We give MAP tests as a measure of individual student instructional levels, to measure individual academi

rowth from year-to-year, and as a reflective tool on our programs in the areas of mathematics, reading, andnguage usage.

AP tests are unique in that they are computerized and adapt to be appropriate for each   child’s   level oarning. When taking a MAP® test, the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all o

he previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answercorrectly, the questions become easier. In an optimal test, a student answers approximately half the item

orrectly and half incorrectly. The final score is an estimate of the  student’s achievement level. As a result, eac

udent has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.

ver the next few days, your child will spend a total of about three hours completing these tests. Following theesting period, you will receive a report showing your  child’s growth. For more information on resources foarents, we encourage you to download the Parent Toolkit here. The toolkit includes information on how thAP is run and scored, as well as tips for parents to support their child at home.

eativity, Activity and Service in the DP

The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the International Baccalaureate programme, and takeeriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a counterbalance to academiudies. Students develop skills, attitudes and dispositions through a variety of individual and group experience

hat provide students with opportunities to explore their interests and express their passions, personalities anderspectives. The aim of the “Service” strand is for students to understand their capacity to make a meaningful contribution

o their community and society. Through service, students develop and apply personal and social skills in reale situations involving decision-making, problem-solving, initiative, responsibility, and accountability for theictions. Service is often seen as one of the most transforming elements of CAS by promoting  students’ selfwareness, offering diverse occasions for interactions and experiences and opportunities for international

mindedness.Service within CAS benefits all involved: students learn as they identify and address authentic community

eeds, and the community benefits through reciprocal collaboration. Service fosters development of abilitiesttitudes and values in accordance with the IB mission statement and the IB learner profile.

rvice as Action in the MYP

The IB mission statement stresses that its concern extends beyond intellectual achievement, and that studenthould develop a personal value system that guides their own lives as thoughtful and active members of locand global communities (MYP: From principles into practice). Service as Action supports intercultural awarenesy providing students with the opportunity to develop empathy and respect for others. These experiences leao deeper understanding of themselves and the communities to which they belong. This reflects our ow

Mission statement.Service as Action activities have been broken into 3 levels. The first level reflection needs to be part of a

ages of the Service Learning Cycle. Reflection provides the proof that learning is happening before, during anfter the experience is completed.

The second level focusses on community. For students to choose actions at the community level they mus

evelop an understanding of what constitutes a  “community” and which community they wish to engage thection. The third is the initiating and planning level. This level prepares students for the IB Diploma CAS program

he goal of this level is to take greater ownership over the experiences they take part in.

The significance of service is will be recognized from June 4th to 8th during “ ction Week”. All students fromrades 6 to 11 will have a wonderful opportunity to experience service at different levels during this time. Thearticipation is an imperative part of their BIFS education.
