Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can rea- sonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical mean- ing. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united king- dom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was some- thing to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspec- tive. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a king- dom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity ? and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Chris- tians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God.

Cycles of Faith - 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"This is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can rea-sonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical mean-ing. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united king-dom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was some-thing to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspec-tive. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a king-dom where God provides the growth. As Chris-tians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God.

When we fail and fall short of your expectations, you are always there at the end of the day with open arms, ready to heal the cuts and scrapes of the day and to encourage us to try again and not to give up. We hold up these men in our midst who act in the world as fathers to their children or models of fathers for others. Bless them in their moments of doubt and frustration with their children. Give them warm and open hearts to forgive failures. Provide them with the words needed for encouragement and perseverance. We ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

following individuals who recently passed away:

Stewardship Reflection: June 17, 2018 - 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,

so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what

he has done in the body.” – 2 CORINTHIANS 5:10

We are all accountable for the gifts God has given us – our time, our talent and our treasure. Each of us is accountable not only for our own life but for the lives of others as well. One day God will ask each of us what did we do with the gifts we were given. How will you respond?

Grant Funds Received I am pleased to report that Good Shepherd Catholic Parish recently received a $15,000 grant. The grant was awarded by the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal over-goal funds for the specific purpose of upgrading mechanical systems. The funds must be used within the fiscal year of the award (by June 30, 2019). We are unable to hold over funds for future years’ expense. Our Maintenance Committee will assess our mechanical system needs, and use the funds to upgrade our mechanical systems. Our sincere thanks to Mary Yockey and the Maintenance Committee for their work in drafting and submitting the application. Lisa Harrington Business Manager

le diste a la Virgen María como madre y a San José como padre;
