Authentic friendship can seem hard to come by these days, especially in our transient society. We move away from family, change jobs, switch parishes, and end up in entirely new places with entirely new people. When we look for new friends, we all have different qualities we're looking for. While we may think of certain standards of behavior necessary to be a "good" friend, we would hardly refer to them as rules or "commandments." In fact, if a friendship or romantic relationship-new or old-becomes charac- terized by imposed obligations, we would rightly be suspicious. Friendships, we understand, ought to be characterized by freedom. We love the per- son, even sacrifice for them at times because, within ourselves, we want to maintain the friendship. So why does Jesus use the language of command as he calls the Apostles his friends? "You are my friends if you do what I command you." Jesus is radically transforming the concept of commandment. In the Jewish heritage of the Apostles, they would hear the word "command" and imme- diately think of the strict Levitical law and distance from God. In introducing the language of friendship, Jesus ties "commandment" to inner freedom of heart. The disciples have this freedom precisely because they know "what [the] Master is doing." Jesus has invited his follow- ers into intimate friendship all along. He shares openly with them. He has patience with their flaws. He isn't scandalized by their failures. He celebrates their successes. We, too, have been called by love and invited into a relationship with Jesus. It is you and I that Jesus chooses and appoints. He does so personally, not from a distant mountain shrouded in clouds. This "new commandment" to "love one another" is received around the shared table in the breaking of the bread. Cycles of Faith - 6th Sunday of Easter "I have called you friends." Authentic friendship can seem hard to come by these days, especially in our transient society. We move away from family, change jobs, switch parishes, and end up in entirely new places with entirely new people. When we look for new friends, we all have different qualities we're looking for. While we may think of certain standards of behavior necessary to be a "good" friend, we would hardly refer to them as rules or "commandments." In fact, if a friendship or romantic relationship-new or old-becomes charac-terized by imposed obligations, we would rightly be suspicious. Friendships, we understand, ought to be characterized by freedom. We love the per-son, even sacrifice for them at times because, within ourselves, we want to maintain the friendship. So why does Jesus use the language of command as he calls the Apostles his friends? "You are my friends if you do what I command you." Jesus is radically transforming the concept of commandment. Stewardship Reflection: May 6, 2018 - 6th Sunday of Easter “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No

one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for

one’s friends” – JOHN 15:12-13

Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him your friend? Jesus says that if we love Him we would be willing to offer what-ever we have to Him, not because we want praise and glo-ry, but simply because we love Him. Does your giving seem mechanical out of obligation or do you share freely out of love?

Please Note: There will be no

morning Mass this week and next

week. Also, there will be no

confessions heard on May 12th

and May 19th.

New Business Manager for Good Shepherd Parish

My name is Lisa Harrington. I was raised in Oregon and was a member of Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church. I joined St James Church, married the love of my life Bill Harrington, and we raised two wonderful children who graduated from St James School and Edgewood High School. Zach lives and works in Chi-

cago, and Samantha lives in Madison and is attending Edgewood College. I earned my degree in business man-agement from Grand Canyon University. I worked for Mon-roe Clinic the past 7-1/3 years and was Director of the Revenue Cycle over patient financial services, insurance, and coding operations. I am honored to join the staff of Good Shepherd Catholic Parish as your business manager.

Arthritis Awareness Month May is National Arthritis Awareness Month, sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation. For the fifty million Americans who suffer from arthritis, they are acutely aware every single day of their affliction. Arthritis is the nation's leading cause of disability. This crippling disease can affect people of any age, although it is most often seen in the elderly. Osteoar-thritis, the most common form, is caused by the breakdown of cartilage in the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by an inflammation of the lining of the joints. Both are painful, chronic diseases that can make daily tasks like dressing, bathing, and getting around difficult. Arthritis pain can be managed with medication; sometimes surgery, like a hip or knee replacement, is recommended. Early diagnosis by a doctor can help those who suffer. Make sure you discuss any joint pain symptoms with your physician during a regularly scheduled appointment. For more info, visit: www.arthritis.org.

My best friend is Lutheran and is a good Christian. I would like her to be my child's sponsor, but I'm wonder-ing, does she have to be a practicing Catholic? The practice of two godparents for an infant's baptism goes back to the time when church law and civil law were one and the same in Europe. If anything did happen to the par-ents, the custody and well-being of the child became the responsibility of the godparents. Adult baptism required that one have a sponsor from the church who would act as a guide or mentor, in bringing the person to faith. Today, being a godparent has no legal implications. It is a spiritual matter. But at least one of the godparents must be a practicing Catholic. The other is called a Christian witness. This distinction recognizes the difference between faith and religion. A Christian can be a witness because of their rela-tionship to God (faith), but the Catholic is a mentor in the practice of the religion. In any event, it is vital that parents give serious considera-tion to the people they choose to be a child's godparents. That choice should be based on practice of faith, solid mor-al character and ability to give good example. Too often the choice is left to whose turn it is in the family, or to friends that parents wish to honor or acknowledge in some way. Your choice of godparents is the first lesson of faith you teach your child. Make it count! ©2009 Liturgical Publications Inc

Do You Like To Garden: The Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens, a network of gardens in Dane County, exist to grow healthful fruits and vegeta-bles for distribution through local food pantries and meal programs. Work is already underway for this season and

volunteers are key to the success of the gardens. Gardening reduces tension, provides an opportunity to exercise while being outside in the fresh air, and allows you to work on a team while helping to reduce hunger in our community with fresh produce. If you are interested in learning more, go to foodpantrygardens.org. If you are willing to help, please contact Peg O'Donoghue at [email protected] or 217-649-7210.

¿Cómo trato a mi esposa, esposo, a nuestros hijos? ¿Cómo trato a mis trabajadores?

¡Bendiciones y felicidades a todas

las madres en su día!
