(StatePoint) While most people can tol-erate some clutter and dust in theirhome, a grungy bathroom is anotherstory. Ironically, the room devoted to per-sonal cleanliness is often rife with bacte-ria, mold and mildew -- even if it looksspotless.

Bacteria and mold not only affect the airyou breathe, but the structural integrityof your home, say experts. There are sev-eral things you can do yourself, as well asefficient home upgrades, to make yourbathroom healthier.

• Clean your shower. Not just once aweek, but daily. Use a squeegee to wipedown walls, or spray an eco-friendlywhite vinegar solution after each use. If

you use a shower curtain, wash or changeit regularly (depending on how "hard"your water is, but usually every one tothree months). Cooler, drier air will alsoreduce mildew in grout between tiles.

• Unclog showerheads. If a showerheadbecomes clogged with mineral deposits,fill a plastic bag with undiluted whitevinegar and place it over the head andseal tie it off with a rubber band. Soakovernight and then scrub it with a tooth-brush.

• Circulate clean air. That musty smell is asign your bathroom isn’t properly venti-lated and is ripe with mildew and otherairborne mold spores. To control it, try aventilation fan with a motion and humidi-

ty sensor, such as Panasonic's Whis-perSense, which turns on when someoneenters the bathroom and automaticallyshuts off 20 minutes later. When youshower, a humidity sensor overrides thetimer and continues extracting moistureuntil the humidity is back to a pre-setlevel. This will help eliminate that mustysmell and prevent excess moisture fromruining expensive fixtures and cabinetry.

• Keep toothbrushes apart. Germs canspread from person to person when theheads of toothbrushes touch. Also, makesure you put down the lid whenever youflush the toilet. Bacteria-filled mist cantravel several feet, landing on porous sur-faces like toothbrush bristles.

• Don't let paint blister. Paint blis-ters are caused by moisture thathelps mold grow. A typical show-er adds half a pint of water to theair. Scrape and re-paint blisters.To avoid future growth, replacemoist air with dry air by ventilat-ing properly.

“The most important thing youcan do to keep mold, bacteriaand mildew out of your bath-room, is to properly ventilate it,"says Anita So, an executive withthe Panasonic Home & Environ-ment Company. “Indoor pollu-tants are virtually impossible toeliminate completely by justopening a window, creating theneed for a second step toimprove air quality. A vent fancan remove stale, moist, pollutedair and replace it with fresh air.”
