FEBRUARY'S BIRTHSTONE IS

FEBRUARY'S FLOWER IS THE VIOLET

FEBRUARY'S COLORS

ARE LIGHT BLUE & YELLOW1. The first valentines were sent in the 15th century.

But not until the 17th century did people start exchanging cards and letters. Valentine'sDay cards weren't mass-produced until the 1840s..2. About 55% of Americans celebrate Valentine's Day and spend an estimated $18.2 billion a year, including more than $1.7 billion on candy alone. On average, men spend $150 on Valentine's Day. And the women? Just $74.3. Americans send 141 million Valentine's Day cards each year. That's more than any other holiday except Christmas. And how sweet: Teachers receive the most Valentine's Day cards annually, followed by children, mothers, and wives.4. Nearly 9 million Americans will buy gifts or cards for their dogs. Hey, furry friends need love, too.5. The most popular gift on Valentine's Day is flowers.Followed by chocolate and then jewelry. Americans send more than 220 million roses each year, and as many as sixmillion couples will get engaged on February 14. (February is the second most popular month after December forproposals.)6. The first heart-shaped box of chocolates was introduced in 1868.Today, more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are sold each year. That's 58 million pounds ofchocolate.7. Necco Sweethearts — a.k.a. conversation hearts — were invented in 1866.Each box has approximately 45 sayings — including "True Love," "Hug Me," and "You Rock" — but you canpersonalize your own, too. And about 10 new sayings are added each year.8. More than 8 billion conversation hearts are manufactured each year. And Necco has to start making them just days after February 14 to have enough in time for the next Valentine'sDay. That's almost 100,000 pounds per day. But don't worry if you still have last year's box — they have a shelf life offive years.9. Lace is commonly used in Valentine's Day decorations. It comes from the Latin lacques, which means to snare or to net, as in catch a person's heart.10. SINGLE LADIES HAVE A GOOD SHOT AT FINDING A DATE: There are 119 single men—never married, widowed or divorced—in their 20s for every 100 single women of the same age.11. TRUE LOVE IS APPARENTLY NOT THAT HARD TO FIND: Over two million marriages take place in theUnited States every year. That means there are more than 6,000 a day!12. In the U.S., 64 percent of men do not make plans in advance for a romantic Valentine's Day with theirsweethearts.13. Every Valentine's Day, the Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare's lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receivesabout 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet.14. In the 1800s doctors commonly advised their heartbroken patients to eat chocolate, claiming it would sooth theirpain. To this day, many women find comfort in a box of chocolates when dealing with heartbreak.15. The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as amemorial to his wife.16. Over 50 percent of all Valentine's Day cards are purchased in the six days prior to the holiday, makingValentine's Day a procrastinator's delight.17. The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love.18. Red roses are considered the flower of love because the color red stands for strong romantic feelings.19. 189 million stems of roses are sold in the U.S. on Valentine's Day.20. California produces 60 percent of American roses, but the greater number sold on Valentine's Day in the U.S.are imported, mostly from South America.21. Approximately 110 million roses, mostly red, will be sold and delivered within the three-day Valentine's Daytime period.

VALENTINE'S DAY

MARDI GRASIt wouldn't be Fat Tuesday without purple, gold and green beads, but how did those colors come to be symbolic with the holiday? The International Business Times reports that the King of the first daytime carnival in 1872 selected those colors based on their associated meaning and he would toss them to people he thought fit that meaning.Purple = justiceGold = powerGreen = faith* New Orleans held its first MardiGras parade in 1837. Floats appeared20 years later.* Lawmakers in Louisiana madeMardi Gras a legal state holiday in1875. It is still observed in parts of thestate and is also a state holiday inAlabama and Florida.* Masks are a fun part of MardiGras, but if you're riding on a float, don't leave home without one. It isillegal to ride on a Mardi Gras paradefloat in New Orleans without wearinga mask.* Mardi Gras may be the day beforeLent, but it also marks the end ofCarnival season, which begins Jan. 6.
