Christian Meditation - Pure Prayer

Tuesdays @ 9.15am In the Community Room

at St. Matthew’s

For the next 20 weeks at the beginning of each meeting we will be listening to a 15 minute talk on caring.

Laurence Freeman explores how we can all learn to care better for each other and to realise that we are ultimately cared for.

Coping better with the daily cares of life, which cause stress when we don’t handle them well, is a fruit of meditation that therefore opens us to the ultimate care which is the divine love.

In July 2019 we gather as a community, to renew our commitment to being a living church, a Church that focuses its energy on the common good through enabling healthy congregations, developing vital ministry and transformative community engagement.

Bringing Jesus’ vision for the world to life – making a difference, living church – is the work of communities of disciples all over the world.

A Living Church is:

Committed to connecting to the spiritually curious and making Christ known to emerging generations

Passionately committed to the wellbeing of humanity and creation

Daring and disruptive because being different and making a difference is a risky enterprise

Authentic about the life, mission and relevance of Christ in this age of "fake news" and social media echo chambers

“Half a million steps” Documentary Premier Friday 5 July 6.30pm Knox Grammar

In 2016 Synod membership endorsed a plan to look at Australia's growing drug problem. In October 2018, the Uniting Church and Uniting sought a new path for drug reform with the launch of the Fair Treatment Campaign. The campaign gained national recognition with Sir Richard Branson in attendance. Following the launch, the Long Walk to Treatment again raised awareness of the lack of services in regional NSW. It takes half a million steps to walk from Dubbo to Sydney – the distance a person in regional New South Wales may have to travel just to reach the drug treatment they need. A long and lonely road to recovery. Step by step, participants walked from Dubbo to Sydney to deliver a letter signed by people across NSW to bring care closer to home. Along the way, stories and signatures were gathered to support our cause with one purpose: making sure that all Australians can access the care they need. These stories and the walk have been collected in a

powerful documentary called ‘Half a Million Steps’. Join with members of the Church for the premiere of this documentary at Synod, followed by a panel to discuss the issue. For more information go to the Fair Treatment Campaign website.

Ministry in the Philippines

A Ministry of St. Matt’s through Teen Plus and many more have come on board to help in a multitude of ways.

This ministry began in 2014 in Bilidan, a rice growing rural community and has grown remarkably.

Currently there are 4 schools (Bilidan, Damires, New Lucena Central - Special Ed. and Ravina), a paediatric unit in Iloilo Government Hospital and a village known as Gustilo.

Our boxes are wrapped in gift wrap and filled with goodies to allow each child to hopefully attend school with exercise books, filled pencil cases, geometry sets and rulers. We also include hygiene items, toothbrush, comb, face washer and handkerchief.

Fun and games are important to a child, so we include a tennis ball, hi bounce ball, colouring books, toy cars, small dolls and not forgetting the trauma teddies for our youngest recipients.

We try to add something different each year, a book bag, a sun hat etc.

This amazing ministry may well have begun with Teen Plus, but has spread incredibly! Closer to home, we have a huge support-base with donations coming from so many people. The op shop collects wonderful treasures for us that bring smiles to our Filipino babies.

The outreach has spread further with day services and group homes in this area involved in wrapping and packing. The guys and girls have all seen pictures of the children they are helping and are excited to be part of the project, part of something they can do rather than they’re often told they can’t do.

Who are we serving? Well, first and foremost our God, the One who loves and cares for us all. As Christians we are mandated to care for each other…and we will.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, Your will be done,

on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin

against us. Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours now and forever.

Amen
