The second part of each letter then explains how those doctrines can and should shape how we live every day: gospel transformation. When it comes to Romans, the first eleven chapters are Paul’s explanation of the gospel, while the final five chapters center on how that gospel changes us. Romans 12:1-2 is the hinge linking these two sections together. Paul urges believers to keep in mind the mercies of God. God’s grace, mercy, and kindness led Him to provide Jesus to pay our penalty for sin so that we might be adopted into God’s family. Then Paul helps us look forward by summarizing the impact the gospel should have on us. We are to be living sacrifices that please God. How can we do that? The answer is in Romans 12:2. We are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. A renewed mind transformed by the Holy Spirit will help us see what pleases God, what His will is. The gospel first changes the heart and mind. Then, as a result, the gospel changes how a person lives. This is how we please and glorify God. As you share with your preschoolers this week, remind them of how important gospel transformation is. Help them to see that they cannot please God on their own effort—and God doesn’t want them to try. Help preschoolers understand what it means to rest in the gospel—in who they have been made in Christ Jesus—and how to allow the Holy Spirit to work in their minds, hearts, and their actions. Share that one of the ways God transforms our minds is by us reading His Word, and encourage them to spend time reading the Bible this week. WORSHIPWorship leaders sing ONE song with the children and collect offering.

INTRODUCE THE SESSION (3 MINUTES)[Leader enters wearing coveralls and a tool belt. He or she is wearing safety goggles and carrying a

spritzing bottle with a comb taped near the nozzle.]Leader • Hello, kids! I’m glad you are all here. I wanted to show you my latest invention. I call it the

“Style Master 2.0.” I invented it because I got tired of waking up with bed head and having to wet my hair and then comb it down. As you can see, this innovative new product allows me to do both in one simple step. From testing prototypes of it over the last month, I’ve saved literally tens of minutes. Yep, this product is going to transform people’s heads all over the world.

But you know, transforming the hair on people’s heads is not nearly as important or impressive as transforming the minds that are in people’s heads. Only the Holy Spirit can do that! Here, why don’t I share a Bible story with you all to help you understand what I mean?

WATCH THE BIBLE STORY (10 MINUTES)Say • God has given us a great gift to help make us more like Jesus—His words in the Bible. God’s

words are true. Today’s Bible story is from the Book of Romans. Show the video or tell the Bible story using the provided storytelling helps. Use the bolded version of the Bible story for young preschoolers.

OPTIONAL BIBLE STORY SCRIPT

A Transformed MindRomans 12:1-18; 1 Corinthians 1:9; Philippians 1:3-7

Paul said that God wants believers to be good friends with one another and with Jesus. Should a person who loves God live in the same way as a person who does not love God? No. Paul wrote a letter to his friends in Rome about how believers should live. This is what Paul wrote.

“Dear friends, God is kind. He loves us even though we are sinners. So live in a way that pleases God. The Holy Spirit lives inside you. Let Him change how you think and act. The Holy Spirit will help you know the right way to live.

“Remember that every believer is different in a special way. God has given us different gifts, and He has a special plan for us. Some people teach about Jesus. Some people serve the church. Some people help those who are sad or sick. We all work together because we are one family in Jesus.

Everyone who loves Jesus is like a family. If someone is happy, be happy with him. If he is sad, be sad too. Get along with one another as much as possible. We can love one another, help

Welcome children and set out a few favorite theme-related toys, such as puzzles and blocks.

ACTIVITY CHOICE (10 MINUTES) Perform a science experiment Cover a baking sheet with a layer of baking soda. Shake the sheet back and forth to evenly distribute the baking soda. Invite preschoolers to take turns squeezing drops of food color all over the baking soda. Then lead preschoolers to take turns using an eyedropper to drip vinegar on the food color. Watch the colored baking soda pop and fizz.Say • Wow! Wasn’t it amazing to watch the baking soda and food color transform before our eyes?

Today’s Bible story is about transformation. The transformation we will talk about happens inside a person when he or she trusts in Jesus. Listen to hear what Paul wrote to believers in Rome about how they should live.

ACTIVITY (10 MINUTES)

Form pairs. Choose one pair to go first. Give children a beach ball. When you say go, the two preschoolers will work together to keep the ball in the air. When the ball hits the ground, their turn ends. Choose another pair to go next. For older preschoolers, consider using a timer to challenge preschoolers to keep the balls in the air a certain length of time.

Say • Good job working together! We all work together because we are all one family in Jesus. God wants us to be friends with one another. The Holy Spirit changes how we think and live so we can love one another like God has loved us.

Christ Connection: God wants us to show friendship and love to one another. All believers are part of God’s family. Jesus brings us together. The Holy Spirit changes how we think and live so we can love one another like God has loved us.

SNACK TIME Gather preschoolers for snack time. Thank God for the snack.

Explain that God wants us to show friendship and love to one another. All believers are part of God’s family. Jesus brings us together. The Holy Spirit changes how we think and live so we can love one another like God has loved us.

TRANSITION When a child finishes his snack, guide him to throw away any trash. He may select a book or puzzle to examine, play quietly with toys, or color the Journal coloring page.

JOURNAL PAGE AND PRAYEROffer the journal page and invite preschoolers to draw themselves serving God in some way whether that

is teaching someone the Bible, serving others, or helping those who are sad or sick. Remind preschoolers that God has given us different gifts and has a special plan for each of us. Pray for the children.Say • God, thank You that when we turn from sin and trust in Jesus, You start to change us. Thank You

for the Holy Spirit who changes how we think and act. Help us to love others like You love us. Amen.

THE GOSPEL: GOD’S PLAN FOR MEUse Scripture and the guide provided in the classroom to explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Assign individuals to meet with kids who have more questions. If this is not possible, encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, leader, or other Christian adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian.

While preschoolers might not be ready to respond to the gospel, use this guide to help little minds begin to grasp big truths about Jesus and the kingdom of God.

GOD IS KING.Ask: “Who is in charge at home? Who is in charge over the whole world?” Explain that God made everything! He is King over everything, and He is in charge.

WE SINNED.Ask: “Have you ever done something wrong?” Tell preschoolers that everyone sins, or disobeys God. Our sin makes God sad.

GOD SENT JESUS.Explain that God must punish sin. He loves us and He sent His Son, Jesus, to earth. Jesus came to take away the punishment for sin.

JESUS LOVES.Ask: “Do you like presents?” Explain that Jesus gives us the best present. He never did anything wrong, but He was punished in our place. Jesus wants to take away our sin because He loves us.

Pray that God will save your preschoolers. As you faithfully teach the Bible, you are planting gospel seeds in children’s hearts. Ask God to grow the preschoolers into children who love and trust in Jesus.
