Buffalo Niagara Convention Center RENOVATIONS LOCATIONS:EXHIBIT HALL, KITCHEN AND MARQUEE Buffalo, New York

The Buffalo Niagara Convention Center promotes

the Western New York region’s hospitality indus-

try worldwide by hosting conventions and trade

shows that benefit the community’s economy. In

order to remain competitive, several improvements

and a fresh overall image was needed for the Buf-

falo Niagara Convention Center. Using the latest

computerized 3-D rendering and animation tech-

nology, BHNT Architects developed a program of

improvements that started with a new entry and

lobby design, inspired by the 1901 Pan-Ameri-

can Exposition Centennial. The program includes

an updating of the technology and finishes in all

meeting and convention spaces, new roof, new

elevators and a new marquee. A computerized

walk-through animation video created by BHNT

Architects to present the Center’s new “look” is

now being used by The Buffalo Niagara Conven-

tion and Visitors Bureau to help promote and sell

the Convention Center to prospective customers.

Buffalo RheumatologyRENOVATIONS AND ALTERATIONSBuffalo, New York

BHNT was retained to convert a 12,000 SF res-

taurant and banquet facility into a medical build-

ing designed for multiple occupancy. BHNT set

out to totally renovate the interiors and use the

building’s own characteristics to separate the

owner’s practice from the future tenancies areas

and still maintain an “identity” for each.

BHNT worked with Buffalo Rheumatology to re-

invent the building’s curb appeal through new

window openings, updated landscaping, strate-

gically positioned and well designed lighting, a

new color palette and the introduction of a simu-

lated, well proportioned masonry component that

totally transformed the building to meet the goals

of the owner.

The newly designed interior spaces have an abun-

dance of natural light, are well lighted, boast all

new interiors, a re-vamped structural system, a

new electrical service, upgraded HVAC systems

and access to an outdoor, secure terrace as an

amenity for patients and staff.

Academy Place Apartments ADAPTIVE RE-USE AND RENOVATIONS Gowanda, New York

The “community” legacy of the 1919 school build-ing is a major focus of this redevelopment project which brings together mixed-use components of affordable senior housing, community recreation and much needed commercial office space in the Village of Gowanda.

There are 32 one and two bedroom apartments which provide generous living space in close proximity to public amenities. New entrance ad-ditions were constructed to independently identify the apartment entrances from the other building uses. Well landscaped grounds root this project into its village surroundings.

Community Place on the first floor is home to Con-gregate Dining which provides affordable lunches for local seniors through the Cattaraugus Depart-ment of Aging. The lower gymnasium and up-per auditorium areas provide recreational space for community wellness and senior programs run through the Rural Health Network.

The existing building envelope was retrofitted, including high efficiency replacement windows to enhance its energy performance. The proj-ect met the Green Building Initiative standards through New York Division of Housing and Com-munity Renewal for high efficiency buildings. Also, the project earned the Energy Star Building rating from NYSERDA and was selected to re-ceive a public grant for the installation of a 10kw photo voltaic solar panel system to reduce electri-cal consumption from the local power grid.

Buffalo Board of EducationMATH, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYSCHOOL AT SENECA - BPS #197/306Buffalo, New York

Major renovation to 1920’s school building with

a 1950’s-style addition. Work includes masonry

and window restoration and an addition of a

second level bridge connecting previously remote

sections of the building and allowing for much

improved circulation from one end of the school

to the other.

At over 50 years old, the existing school building

is eligible for the Historic Register thus requiring

project review and approval by NY SHPO.

BHNT Architects worked very closely with Board

of Education, Seneca School staff and construc-

tion manager to meet strict requirements of pro-

gram, deadlines and budget established by the

Buffalo State The State University of New YorkCAMPBELL STUDENT UNION - 3RD FLOOR AND 1ST FLOOR LOBBYRENOVATIONS AND ALTERATIONSBuffalo, New York

The main lobby renovation consists of a dramatic

reconfiguration of the central feature stair in order

to better integrate the activities of the main meet-

ing space of the campus with the floor above.

pended steel ring feature all serve to reinforce the

new spatial arrangement and updated finishes

as well. Renovation of these spaces include a

student lounge with fireplace and meeting/study

areas, an updated office suite, reconfiguration of

Buffalo Board of EducationBURGARD HIGH SCHOOL #301ADDITIONS AND ALTERATIONSBuffalo, New York

This project entailed the complete rehabilitation

and modernization of an existing vocational high

school originally constructed in 1929.

The primary components of the project included:

rehabilitation of the exterior envelope including

window replacement masonry repair; renovations

and alterations to the existing 200,000 square

foot building; and a 10,000 square foot addi-

tion. The project involved asbestos abatement,

general construction, mechanical, electrical,

plumbing and fire protection work. Because the

original building had been determined to be eli-

gible for listing in the National Register of Historic

Places, the design process included NYS SHPO

review.

The project was directed toward celebrating and

refurbishing the legacy building, constructed in

1929, while providing the school with the pro-

grammatic improvements it required to serve as

a “lighthouse” vocational education facility and a

point of pride within the community.

Buffalo State The State University of New YorkCAUDELL HALLRENOVATIONS AND ALTERATIONSBuffalo, New York

Programming and design for the rehabilitation of Caudell Hall to serve as the home for the Col-lege’s School of the Professions.

The existing 38,000 SF Caudell Hall occupies a site at the corner edge of the campus’ central quad but is disconnected from it due to the loca-tion of the building’s main entrance and an el-evation difference between its main floor and the quad. The rehabilitation will resolve the discon-nection by relocating and raising Caudell Hall’s main entrance to give it a prominent address on the central quad.

The 3-story building will house culinary training and demonstration facilities on the 1st floor; class-rooms, computer labs and dietetics labs on the 2nd floor; and department and faculty offices on the 3rd floor. The west elevation facing the cen-tral quad features a highly transparent curtainwall that will open the “theater” of the culinary training activities to the central quad. The east elevation features a curtainwall of aluminum ribbon win-dows and insulated metal panels. Other princi-pal exterior materials of the rehabilitation include terra cotta panels in a rainscreen application.

OSHUN OYSTER BAR Buffalo, New York

BHNT Architects, PC teamed up with father-son duo, James Guarino Jr. and Sr., and Iskalo Development to design Oshun Oyster Bar, a contemporary sea-food house, located on East Huron Street in down-town Buffalo, New York.

Built in 1946, the building originally served as the Waldorf Astoria luncheon counter. Strong Art Deco themes influenced the building throughout; from the rounded tile corners, to the flowing Terrazzo floors and Bas-Relief murals.

The Guarinos expressed two main objectives for the space renovation; create a stage for a talented chef to present unique, high-end cuisine, and to cel-ebrate the building’s existing Art Deco features and further infuse the space with the style reminiscent of 1930’s culture.

The interior space was arranged to allow the Ter-razzo floor to imbue a strong, flowing, colorful pres-ence, while the main bar and booth seating are used to frame the existing murals, both of which complement the rich history behind the name Os-hun, which is derived from the Yoruba goddess of the waters.

The design includes an open kitchen, full-service bar, oyster bar and a spacious, open dining area with seating for 125 guests.

Finger Lakes Gaming and RacetrackGAMING AND DINING ADDITION Farmington, New York

BHNT designed the 33,000 SF addition to Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack Casino. This project is the most significant expansion to the casino since it opened in 2004. The project nearly doubled the amount of gaming space available adding room for 350 additional machines.

The addition created space for a 102 seat Wolfgang Puck Express, a fast-casual restaurant as well as the feature bar named Remedy. The modernly designed bar and lounge seats 140 at the bar and includes an 18 foot high definition projection screen, 22 flat screen televisions and a 324 square foot stage and dance floor. The space has been designed to be its own entertainment destination.

A new larger players club was also added, as well as a coat check and back of house office space.

The expansion allowed for some existing machines to be moved into the new space, allowing for wider aisles and improved accessibility.

This project was done in collaboration with LSE Archi-tects of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
