He cited his own personalexperience when a case of hissister against a hospital draggedon for more than seven yearsand had to be settled out ofcourt by reconciliation.

The lecture was jointlyorganised by the Raj Bhavan,Bengaluru, the InternationalCentre for Alternative DisputeResolution (ICADR) Regionalcentre, and the Bhavan.

Governor, Dr. H RBhardwaj, who delivered theintroductory remarks lamentedthat because of the delays andthe high cost involved thepoorer sections of society arenot getting justice. In thiscontext, he recalled, that whenhe was a Law Minister in theUnion Cabinet, he had planned

to set up 9000 rural law courts,though he was not sure whathas happened to it.

Referring to Sri JusticeE S Venkataramaiah, Dr. Bhardwajdescribed him as a polite, softspoken personality, well-versedin law.

Justice M N Venkatachaliah,former Chief Justice of theSupreme Court, who presided,complimented the organizers forgetting up a function to payhomage to Sri E S Venkataramaiah,

before reaching the pinnacle ofhis luminary career to becomethe Chief Justice of India. Evenafter retirement, he served as aprofessor in the National LawSchool, Bengaluru, he added.

Besides, Mr.JusticeDalveer Bhandari, Judge,International Court of Justice,The Hague who spoke atlength on the concept of ADR,drawing parallels of itsinfluence in China and India,Mr. Justice M N Kumar of theState High Court also spoke onthe qualities of head and heartof Sri E.S. Venkataramiah.Among the other dignitarieswho were present at the

function, was Mr. JusticeK Sreedhar Rao, Acting ChiefJustice of the State High Court.

Earlier, Sri K G Raghavan,eminent Advocate and Hon.Secretary, Bhavan, welcomedthe Chief Guests and comperedthe programme. Smt JusticeB V Nagarathana of the StateHigh Court proposed a vote ofthanks.

‘Geriatrics and Panchakarma’

was the subject of a lecturedelivered by Dr. B.S. Sreedhar,H.O.D., Kayachikitsa andPanchakarma in the GovernmentAyurveda Medical College,Bangalore. The special lectureunder the auspices of theBhavan on Feb 7, was for anendowment to commemoratethe memory of Dr. G. SrinivasaMurthy, a well-known AyurvedicPhysician and social activist.

Focusing his attentionon leading an old age bothmentally and physically,referred to writings of CharakaAcharya and Sushrutha whichmake it clear that the span ofhuman life is 100 years.This, he said, can be achievedif the individual adheres to the

Ruthu Charya and Dina Charya.

Explaining the two norms,Dr. Sreedhar said Ruthu Charyaentails consuming food inaccordance with the Ruthus,like orange and ballad seeds,in Sishira, mango and water-melan in Vasantha, etc.

Dina Charya, according tohim involved daily exerciseslimited food, avoiding itemsthat may cause physiologicaland mental disturbance coupledwith adequate rest. BesidesDr. Sreedhar added that Karmaof previous birth also played avital role in the health of anindividual.

Dwelling on the wordGeriatrics, he explained theword is derived from ‘Geron’which means old age andatrology (disease). AboutPancha Karma, Dr. Sreedharsaid the system comprises fivetypes of treatment ie Virochan,(Purgation) Vamana (vomiting),Dr. B.S. Sreedhar

Pranayama (breathing exercise),Langana (Fasting) and Rasayana.

Stressing the importance ofregimens in food and exercisefor old the aged, he said theyshould have adequate rest andsleep, avoid sprouted pulseswhich are not easily digestible,as also curds with hot rice. Norshould milk added to curd rice.He warned that unboiled milkmight cause Psoriasis. He saidChyavanaprasha does not helpan old man becoming young.It only improves healthyappearance and prevents mentalageing. He advised the use ofturmeric powder in the preventionof cold and cough.

More importantly it can behelpful in kidney ailment,he added.

Earlier, Sri. Pemmaiah,Manager, Programmes &Projects welcomed the chiefguest. Prof. S.N. Subba Rao,OSD, Bhavan, proposed a voteof thanks. Members of thefamily of Dr. Srinivasa Murthywere among those present inthe function.

some time. Bhavan’s KodaguVidyalaya all of a sudden hashit headlines. And that with abig bang.

According to Sri. T.G. PremKumar, Member of the ExecutiveCommittee of the KarnatakaRajya Vignana Parishat (KRVP),the Pico-Hydo model project,designed by the student teamof the Vidyalaya with N. UjwalNarayan in the lead has wonappreciation at the national level.

The project is about howelectricity could be generated atlow cost by using river resources.The team was presented with acertificate of appreciation fromthe Vice-Chancellor of theBenares Hindu University.

The Vidyalaya team wasone of the 30 from the state which

attended the five-day nationallevel science conventionsponsored by the Benares HinduUniversity. Sri Prem Kumar saidthe convention had enlightenedthe growing minds giving anoverall view of the developmentof science in recent times.
