Welcome to Bharathiar University

harathiar University Schools are providing a high quality learning

experience for its students for the past 26 years. The BharathiarB University is the off spring of the world renowned Univeristy of Madras.

The Long tradition of students care is reinforced by the continued investment in student

and Learning Support Services. This has lead to an expansion of the University Schools

Career Services. Students are encouraged to develop the confidence and skills required

to complete in today’s challenging employment market across a full range of career

options.

This tradition of excellence owes much to the work of a committed staff. Bharathiar

University staff are not only highly qualified but are increasingly research active, which

means that students are being exposed to critical thinking and scholarship. However,

being a student at Schools of Bharathiar University is not only about achieving

qualifications, but also is concerned with prepration for taking on a wide range of

responsibilities and future leadership roles. The ongoing expansion of the University’s

international net work means that students are engaging with global as well as local

issues.

The 2008-09 prospectus not only provides useful information about courses and contacts

but also attempts to reflect the total University experience. Bharathirar University is

renowned for its beautiful campus, which is in the foot hill of Maruthamalai conservation

area. This is complemented by a range of buildings which reflect a mixture of old and

new. The University has embarked on an ambitious building and refurbishment

programme which will help to ensure that there are high quality facilities to deliver the

The Bharathiar University named after the great visionary and a revolutationary National Poet, Subramania Bharathi wasestablished at Coimbatore at the foothills of Maruthamalai by the Government of Tamilnadu in February 1982,with jurisdiction over the districts of Coimbatore, Erode and The Nilgiris. This University is the off springof the world renowned University of Madras.

This University has its principles enshrined with the lofty motto “Educate to Elevate”. Every effort is harnessed to realize the dreams of the poet of making Educational institutions a temple of learning. It is the aim of the University to participate in the task of inculcatingnecessary knowledge, Skills and Creative Attitudes and values among the youth ofthis country, to contribute more effectively towards establishing an equitable socialand economic order and the secular ideals of our Nation.

It is located in a sprawling area of about 1000 acres free from pollution, 12 kms.away from the Coimbatore city. The atmosphere is quite serene and ideal forintellectual pursuits. The campus has a number of well-designed buildings whichhouse various teaching and research Schools, Library, Internet Centreadministrative offices, hostels and canteens, etc.,

The University is an affiliating type, recognized by the University GrantsCommission (UGC), a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), andCommon Wealth Universities. At present 143 Colleges are affiliated to it. This includes18 Autonomous Colleges, 49 Educational Colleges, 8 Management Institutions, 85 Arts& Science Colleges (Women’s colleges 24, Co-educational colleges 114 and men’sColleges 5), 1 Air force Administrative College.

Candidates who will be completing their degree programme through April / May 2008 Examinations are also eligible to apply for admission, theapplicants will be provisionally admitted to the courses based on their performance in the entrance test (if applicable) and (or) in qualifyingexaminations (UG degree course) upto V semester/ II year (for non semester courses). However, their admission will be confirmed only if theysuccessfully complete the degree programme and satisfy the above eligibility conditions before commencement of class. Candidates who donot fulfill the eligibility conditions on the day of commencement of the class will not be permitted to attend the class without getting theiradmissions confirmed.

The candidates should have completed 10+2+3/11+1+3 (15) years of study before admission to the Post Graduate and PG Diploma coursesoffered by this university.

Candidates desirous of obtaining admission into the PG Degree/PG diploma courses offered in the University Departments should apply for thesame in the prescribed application form which are available in the Bharathiar University, at a cost of Rs. 300/- to be remitted by a Bank of IndiaChallan (into the Genral fund Account of Bharathiar University) of a demand draft of any Nationalised Bank, drawn in favour of the Registrar,

Bharathiar University payable at Coimbatore. SC/ST candidates have to pay only Rs. 150/- provided they produce an attested Photo copy ofhis/her community Certificate along with the request for application. The candidates shall send a self addressed envelope (28 x 13 cms) affixingRs. 50/- stamp along with a request. Applicants can also down load the application from the web site www.b-u.ac.in and submit the applicationsalong with a DD for Rs. 300/- for Registration and Rs. 150/- for SC /ST candidates, by means of a Demand Draft drawn in favour of The Registrar,Bharathiar University payable at Coimbatore. The application form and the hall-ticket, shall be completed in all respects and sent to therespective Heads of the University Departments, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore – 641 046, on or before 05.03.2008. The application shallnot be sent to the Registrar. Application received after the due date will be rejected.

(The above procedure does not apply for M.B.A. and M.C.A. degree courses offered in the University Department and for all courses offered bythe School of Distance Education).

Candidates who are eligible and willing to apply for admission to more than one PG degree and PG diploma courses shall submit separateapplications for each and every course. Application made for admission to one course will not be considered for any other course.

The application should be accompanied with attested Xerox copies of the following certificate.

The total marks scored upto 5th semester of study (if it is semester pattern) or upto II year of study (if it is annual pattern) in the UG degree coursein all subjects other than i) part I / II Languages and ii) subjects like General Knowledge, NSS, irrespective of the candidate appearing for April2008 examinations or already qualified for the award of degree, shall be reduced to 40 marks. If a candidate has failed in some subjects uptoV semester / II year as the case may be, as on date of application, the marks secured in all subjects (passed and failed) shall be taken to arrive atthe total marks scored.

The question paper for the entrance test shall consist of 60 Objective type questions giving 4 choices to choose among, carrying 1 (one) markeach and the duration of the test will be 90 minutes.

Hall- tickets containing the date, time and venue of the entrance test will be sent to the candidates, by the respective HODs by certificate ofpostings so as to reach the candidates atleast 5 days before the date of entrance test. Candidates who do not receive the hall-tickets in time maycontact the respective HODs and obtain the same.

Provisional list of selected, wait listed candidates will be put up in the notice boards of the respective departments within fifteen days after thedate of entrance test.

The selected candidates shall be required to surrender their original Transfer Certificate, Conduct Certificate, Community Certificate, Marksheets, (SSLC, HSC, Degree) Provisional / Degree Certificates and a set of attested Xerox copies of all the certificates and remit the prescribedfee on or before the last date indicated in their admission card.

Free Education Scheme (FES)

Free Education Scheme offered by this University gives Free Education to the poor and meritorious students to a maximum of 10students admitted into various courses of this University Parents income should not exceed Rs. 18,000/- p.a. The selection will be based on thefamily income and a written test conducted by this university.

All the fee, boarding and lodging are borne by the University for the students selected under FES.

Bharathiar University uses the regulatory framework of the University, which governs the standards of courses and awards. A system of qualityassurance procedures and committees underpins the quality of all our work. We plan a considerable emphasis on enhancing the quality ofteaching and a enriching learning process. The University offers the “Choice Based Credit System”. It incorporates external examiners’ reports,curriculum review processes into the quality enhancement process. Through our evaluation processes, we aim to promote a vibrant approach tolearning and teaching.

The University is located at the foot of the Marudhamalai Hills about 12 kms from theCoimbatore city in a sprawling area of about 1000 acres. The atmosphere is quite serene and ideal for intellectual pursuits. The campus has a number of beautifully -designedbuildings which house various Teaching and research Departments, Library, ComputerCentre, administrative offices, hostels, cafeteria, etc.

The internet cenre is fitted with the latest state of art of technology with a 2 Mbps Broad band.It has high speed internet server, scanner, web camera, printer cum copier machines and Multimedia accessibility. Apart from these facilities,each department has a Broad band Internet conectivity with LAN facility for the use of Students and faculty members.

The Library and Learning Resources service is located in a vast Building and plays a vital rolein supporting learning and teaching.

The Library aims to provide much of the information you will need, and to equip you with theskills to find and use it. At its core has a collection of over 1,50,000 books covering all the subjects taught in the University Schools. The key to the Library’s collections and range of services is its catalogue, which can be searched using terminals in the Library, UGC -INFONET terminals with Internet access, the library alsogives access to a wide range ofelectronic resources.

Most books can be borrowed for home use, but to ensure the widest possible access to books which are in heavy demand, such as those onreading lists, their use is normally confined to the Library. Through the Inter-Library Loan service, books and other items can often be obtainedfrom other libraries for use by readers. Students of the Schools of Bharathiar University also have direct access to the Library resources of WorldUniversities. The University Library functions from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. on all working days and from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. on a weekendsand public holidays.

Each and every department under the Schools have their own collections available for students in their specialized area of study.

The library also has world class collections of text books and various publications of government, research organizations and institutions, RBI,Ministries of both centre and state chiefly focusing towards the students interest to acquire the area of knowledge.

Often the most upto date information isn’t found in books but in journals and newspapers, and the Library maintains a Periodicals collection ofover 1000 titles. The most recent issues are displayed for easy browsing and the back issues are stored as hard copies or CDs. Many periodicalsare now also available in electronic format, and access to these is available using a password. The Library also provides most of the major dailyEnglish and Tamil newspapers.

The University library provides Xerox facility inside the book section for the benefit of users. The Library is fully computerized. This is one of thefew Universities in south India to have facilities like CD ROM section, bar-coded facility and internet services. The library is a member of the UGC– INFONET – consortium, whereby e-journals of different faculties can be accessed.

The Classroom Resources Collection is of special help to students, as it brings togethermaterials for the teaching of literacy and numeracy as well as a wide range of resources foruse on student placement, including an extensive collection of illustrations, plus CDs, DVDsand videos, together with the appropriate viewing and listening equipment.

A number of Scholarships which include the Government of India, Merit, Backward, MostBackward Class Scholarships, Scheduled Caste, and Scheduled Tribe Scholarships are also

available to the students admitted to the PG Degree courses. UGC Sponsored scholarships such as Single Girl Child, Rank holders, RajivGandhi JRF & SRF etc. are also available.

The University has introduced Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for all PG degree programmes offered by the University Departments fromthe academic year 2001 – 2002. It permits the candidates to study 30 percent for the course curriculum content offered by other departments.This scheme also permits the students to move from one University to another University without difficulties and falls in line with most of the international Universities.

The University plies four buses for the convenience of the staff and students. The campus is also connected with very frequent city buses fromthe Coimbatore city. The University runs four hostels for men and three exclusively for lady students. There are well- equipped Library,Computer Centre, Health Centre and Sport Stadium. A Post –Office, a Bank, two Canteens, Stationery Shop and a Saloon are functioning in theUniversity Campus for the benefit of the staff and students. There are two NSS Unitsfunctioning in the University.

University has modern language lab based on the Multimedia Systems, with the followingsoftware. 1.Teacher console for conducting programme and monitoring students andproviding on line help etc.2.English lab based on the client server application running inLAN3.Career lab for teaching public speaking, facing interview, group discussion, resumepreparation, assertiveness and soft skills.

At the beginning of every academic year, students are intimated about the date of commencement of class, intervening holidays, the last date forthe payment of tuition and examination fee, the date of commencement of examinations and the date of publication of examination resultsthrough an academic calendar.

Bharathiar University brings out a newsletter called “Bharathiar University Newsletter”. It brings out the new developments and variouscurricular and co-curricular activities of the University.

This University publishes a student magazine called “Manavar Malar” to encourage and bring out the talents of students in Art, Photography,narration etc.,

The department of Physical Education Coordinates the games and sports activities of theaffiliated colleges and provides opportunities for the students to demonstrate theircompetence in inter-collegiate sports meets. The department is also responsible forselection of the University teams to participate in the All India Inter – University Tournaments,University Games and Sports Meets. Our university has facilities for games like Volleyball,Football, Hockey, Cricket and other field events with a six lane 400 metre track.

With the spirit that the fruits of knowledge should reach the community at large, theuniversity extends it community service activities through the National Service Scheme(NSS). The NSS extends its community and social service activities through 130 NSS unitsfunctioning in the University campus and affiliated colleges. Nearly 14,200 studentvolunteers are actively involved in social upliftment programmes. Under the agis of NSS aRed Ribbon Club (RRC) is functioning, which create an awareness about the AIDS andways of preventing the same.

The University Fitness Centre is functioning in the basement of the School of DistanceEducation Building. This facility is open to all the staff and students. Separate sections areavailable for men and women. Well qualified physical fitness instructors are available in thecentre. The centre focuses its attention onmaintaining and developing physicalfitness, weight reduction and bodybuilding.

The University Health Centre caters to the medical needs of the students and employees ofthe University. It functions daily on all working days with well experienced Doctors andTechnicians.

The centre offers counseling services to the University students for enhancing their Educational, vocational and Personality capabilities. It alsohelps students to plan their career and enrich mental health.

Separate Hostel facilities are available for Women, PG students with: Single and Twin bed rooms, Solar heater, Common Mess with IndianFood, Recreation rooms, Phone facility (STD / ISD). Students who are desirous to join the hostel shall contact the respective Wardensimmediately after admission.
