Not helped by the steady pace in Saturday=sG1 Irish Oaks back at the Kildare venue, she was therace=s real eye-catcher with a late flourish to finish alength back in fourth and, despite this quick return, hails from one of the masters at successfully backingup his stable=s runners. STYLE VENDÔMEC.10 Anabaa x Place Vendôme

Bred by Guy Pariente (Haras de Colle-ville) who sold him to Nicolas Clément for €92,000 at the 2011 August Yearling Sale, this Classic winning colt comes from the last crop of the influential Anabaa and is out of a Listed placed daughter of Dr Fong. With a race record now boasting five wins, this magnificent grey colt was already making headlines at the age of two, ending the year with a highly promising Listed win at Deau-ville. This year, he has blown away the racing industry, first of all when romping home in the Prix Djebel (Gr.3) then when winning the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr.1) with a majestic performance against seventeen rivals including Intello and Olympic Glory.

OCOVANGOC.10 – Monsun x Crystal Maze

This son of Monsun bought by BBA Ireland for €180,000 from Watership Down in August 2011 caught the eye from his very first start as a two-year-old at Saint-Cloud. The André Fabre-trained colt continued in the same vein on the very same course winning the Prix François Mathet (L.) on his reappearance followed by the Prix Greffulhe (Gr.2). Deemed good enough to take on the best of the English in the Epsom Derby (Gr.1), Prince Faisal’s colt finished fifth, less than a length away from the third placed horse, having been unlucky in the straight. On July 13th at Longchamp, he finished third in the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr.1) to the excellent Flintshire.

TORONADOC.10 – High Chaparral x Wana Doo

In August 2011, this son of High Chaparral bred by Paul Nataf and consigned by the Haras d’Omméel, appealed to Amanda Skiffington who went to €55,000 for him. Even as a two year old, he was already impressing onlookers with his class and good looks, winning three times including the Champagne Stakes (Gr.2) at Doncaster. He was faultless on his seasonal reappearance at Newmarket in the colours of Sheikh Joaan Al Thani, where he was in a different league to the other runners in the Craven Stakes (Gr.3) before finishing fourth in the 2000 Guineas (Gr.1). In the St James’s Palace St. (Gr.1) at Royal Ascot, he ran a cracking race to finish 2nd, only beaten a nose by the extraordinary Dawn Approach.

CHICQUITAF.10 - Montjeu x Prudenzia

Chicquita, a daughter of the Listed winner Prudenzia bred by Ecurie des Monceaux and Skymarc Farm, was the object of everyone’s attention in August 2011, none more so than the Australian Paul Makin who, represented by Badgers Bloodstock, went to €600,000 to secure the filly. In the Prix de Diane (Gr.1), this talented filly trained by Alain de Royer Dupré put in an exceptional performance, coming from last place to snatch second place from dual Group 1 winner Silasol. Last July 20th at The Curragh, she was crowned with a Classic success when storming home in the Gr.1 Darley Irish Oaks.

MORANDI C.10 – Holy Roman Emperor x Vezina

In August 2011 Jean-Claude Rouget paid €65,000 in order to get his hands on this powerful colt sold by the Haras des Capucines. Aged two and in the colours of Daniel-Yves Trèves, the grey colt had an exceptional season, the highlights of which were a 12 length victory in the Prix de Condé (Gr.3) and a 7 length victory in the Critérium de Saint-Cloud (Gr.1) making him the best two year old in France in order of prizemoney. This year, he showed he had lost none of his ability when finishing an excellent second to the untouchable Intello in the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr.1).

FLOTILLAF.10 – Mizzen Mast x Louvain

A daughter of Mizzen Mast and the Miesque Stakes (Gr.3) winner Louvain, this filly bred by the Haras des Capucines was bought by the Justin Bahen – Hubie de Burgh tandem for €120,000 in August 2011. At the end of her two year old year, the young filly belonging to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani and in the care of Mikel Delzangles had her crowning moment on American soil when winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr.1) in fantastic style. This year she was a most eyecatching winner of the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr.1) on her seasonal debut against the unbeaten Esotérique, breaking the track record in the process.

BHA CONCLUDE GODOLPHININVESTIGATION, APPLEBY LICENCEAPPROVEDEdited Press Release The British Horseracing Authority yesterdayannounced the conclusion of the investigation andcompletion of the report into the 22 horses stabled atGodolphin=s Moulton Paddocks yard in Newmarketwhich are known to have been administered anabolicsteroids. These horses were all under the care of thethen-licensed trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni until his Apr. 25 disqualification. Following a review of thefindings of the report, the BHA has decided not to issueany further disciplinary charges. There was no evidenceof any other parties being involved with theadministration of prohibited substances beyond thoseidentified at the Apr. 25 disciplinary panel hearing. Inaddition, no evidence was found to challenge or disputethe findings of the disciplinary panel with regard to theevents which took place within the [Moulton Paddocks]yard. The findings and reasons of that disciplinary panelcan be found here. The investigation did not find anyevidence to suggest the decision to use anabolicsteroids involved those that can be considered as AlZarooni=s superiors or any of the other senior figures atthe yard, including the assistant trainer, CharlieAppleby, and head lad, Oliver Costello. However, theinvestigation did highlight a number of key failings bothin terms of process and within the managementstructure at Moulton Paddocks. This created anenvironment in which these offences were able to beperpetrated by Al Zarooni without being detected byothers within the yard. The investigation found that AlZarooni was able to act in a manner which marginalizedseveral of his senior staff, which subsequently resultedin these events being able to unfold entirely withouttheir knowledge or oversight. The key findings of thisreport have been submitted to Godolphin managementas a guide to implementing immediate structural andprocedural changes, which the BHA considersnecessary. The full copy of this report can be foundhere. Following two interviews with the BHA and theconclusion of the wider investigation, the BHA issatisfied that there is no evidence that Appleby wasinvolved in, or aware of, the administration ofprohibited substances to horses at Moulton Paddocks. The BHA also noted Appleby=s recent measures toinstigate changes to procedures and processes withinthe yard alongside Saeed bin Suroor, in whose yardnone of the failings associated with Moulton Paddockswere found, and for who Appleby had worked for longperiods as a Godolphin employee. Consequently, theLicensing Committee has approved Appleby=sapplication for a licence to train from MoultonPaddocks, with immediate effect. The BHA has anexisting and robust stable yard inspection and equineanti-doping and medication control programme. It wasthis programme that uncovered these serious breachesof the Rules of Racing.

However, the yard will be subject to enhancedmonitoring for a period of time until the BHA is satisfiedthat a reduced level of scrutiny would be appropriate. This will include the BHA making both announced andunannounced visits to Moulton Paddocks to carry outfurther testing and monitor progress of theimplementation of changes within the yard as a resultof this report. AAfter an extensive and thorough investigation wehave found no new evidence which contradicts thatwhich was presented to the Disciplinary Panel,@commented the BHA=s Adam Brickell. AThe evidencegathered from this investigation has confirmed thatMahmood Al Zarooni acted autonomously and was theperson solely responsible for the events that took placeat Moulton Paddocks. However, we have identifiedsignificant failings in the processes in place andmanagement structure at the yard, which allowed theseevents to unfold without senior management becomingaware. These findings have been shared withGodolphin. We are satisfied that Charlie Appleby had noawareness of the actions of Al Zarooni. This was madeclear to the Licensing Committee, which has confirmedthat Appleby is suitable to hold a trainer=s licence. Weare aware that Appleby has already begun the processof implementing changes to the management structureand procedures at the yard, and we will encourage him,as the licensed trainer, to continue to implement suchchanges, including addressing all of the points set outin our report. Conversely, Al Zarooni=s refusal tocooperate further with the investigation will be drawnto the attention of the Licensing Committee should heever seek to return to British Racing following hiseight-year disqualification.@ cont. p9 Look for the K throughout the TDN graded stakesentries, denoting Keeneland sales graduates.

BHA Conclude Godolphin Investigation cont. BHA Chief Executive Paul Bittar added, ATheinvestigation process has been a complex andchallenging one. However, I am satisfied that theconclusions reached are an accurate reflection ofevents. Fortunately, cases such as this--both in termsof scale and profile--are incredibly rare; however, thereare areas where we can learn from the issues raised. One such area is in respect of the work now beingcarried out with the IFHA to improve levels ofharmonization between racing jurisdictions on the useof anabolic steroids, where encouraging progress isbeing made. This case may well prove to be a catalystfor significant policy change in some countries. Whilewe believe the sport=s independent regulation has stoodup throughout this process, the BHA is committed tocontinue to fight against those who attempt to cheatthe sport. As such, this case has also led to a reviewinto our anti-doping programme to ascertain whetherthe appropriate level of resource is being deployed, andwhether it is being deployed in the most effective way.The BHA=s anti-doping budget has, due to the broadereconomics of the sport, undergone a significantreduction in recent years, and this case highlights theneed to ensure we remain at the forefront of worldracing in terms of our programme and resources.@

Mcpeek Has High Hopes for Saratoga... Trainer Ken McPeek has his sights set on Saratoga=stwo biggest Grade I races for 3-year-olds, the GI Alabama S. for fillies Aug. 17 and the GI Travers S.Aug. 24. He is considering GII Virginia Derby hero War Dancer(War Front), who made six of his seven starts on theturf, for the Travers. The colt=s sole dirt start was in aGulfstream Park maiden Feb. 9, where he was fourth tograded stakes placed Saint Vigeur (Smart Strike). "We know he wants a mile and a quarter,@ McPeeksaid. AIt's obviously his distance, but can he handle thesurface switch? I think he can. War Front himself neverran once on the turf. We've got to defend our title withsomebody.@ McPeek won last year=s Travers with Golden Ticket(Speightstown) in a dead heat with Alpha (Bernardini). "The other thing we're looking at is, we do think the3-year-old season is wide open, and the stud value itwould add to him would be dramatic. He would be oneof the top 3-year-olds if we could sneak our way into aGrade I dirt race." Another possibility for War Dancer would have beenthe GI Secretariat S. on the grass at Arlington Park, butMcPeek has decided to point GI Blue Grass S. winnerJava=s War (War Pass) at that race instead. "Why butt heads against ourselves?" McPeek asked."We could easily get beat over there and wish we hadrun here. [War Dancer] never worked on the turf once. He's worked on the dirt every time. He works with allour best horses on the dirt. It just so happens he endedup on the grass in a series of races." For the Alabama, McPeek is considering MontanaNative (Yes It=s True), who was a decisive winner in theBroom Dance S. at Saratoga Wednesday. According toMcPeek, the filly has been improving with back-to-backwins since being freshened after a sixth-place finish in aKeeneland allowance Apr. 17. "She's a good filly, McPeek said. AFrom thebeginning, she's done everything right. We've gotteninto a little momentum with her lately. She got a bit ofa break for a period before her last start, and her lasttwo have been bang-up. If we can string together athird one, I'm leaning pretty heavily toward running herin the Alabama. I would think even if you run third in arace like that, it's pretty valuable in the long term." McPeek is not worried about the 1 1/4-mile distancefor Montana Native, despite her sprint breeding. "I got a Speightstown to go a mile and a quarter lastyear, and I got a Wild Again to go a mile and a half in2002," McPeek said of Golden Ticket and Sarava (WildAgain), the latter upsetting the 2002 GI Belmont S. atodds of 70-1. Golden Ticket is being aimed at the GI Woodward S.Aug. 31 and 2-year-old filly Charmed Hour (Harlan=sHoliday) is being pointed at the GII Adirondack S. Aug.11.

Moment in Dixie Possible for Ballerina... Trainer Jimmy Toner is considering sending Momentin Dixie (Dixieland Band) to the seven-furlong GI Ballerina S. at Saratoga Aug. 23 after a sharpoptional claimer score at the spa Wednesday. "That's a big jump, but I would love to get someblack-type on her," Toner said. "She came back verygood. It set up good for her. She had a nice prep downthere [on June 14 at Belmont] and ran good yesterday,so we were very happy with her." Moment in Dixie, daughter of the multiple gradedstakes winning mare Ellie=s Moment (Kris S.), has wonthree of eight starts and was runner-up in last summer=sSerena=s Song S. at Monmouth and Summer Guest S.at the Spa.

Seal Cove Looking at Bernard Baruch... Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey announcedyesterday that the GII Bernard Baruch H. could be thenext start for Seal Cove (Strong Hope), who defeatedeight stakes winners in a Saratoga optional claimerWednesday. "I want to keep him in places where he can becompetitive and earn some money," said McGaughey."One spot that could come up is the Bernard Baruch, but I'll just have to wait and see how that turns up." Seal Cove raced near the back of the pack in theearly stages of Wednesday=s race before sweeping outfour wide on the turn to hit the wire a head in front ofGI Woodbine Mile S. winner Turallure (Wando). "I thought he ran great," said McGaughey. "He hadbeen training really well. It came up a solid race. Onemile isn't his gig; he wants to go farther than that.Javier [Castellano] rode him great. He took him backbehind a closer pace than we expected, but he closedwell. Javier made the right decision when he broughthim off the rail; he prefers being outside of horses. Then [Turallure] came outside of him, but he was ableto hold him off."

Starshipp Truffles Back with Wolfson... Starship Truffles (Ghostzapper) has returned to thebarn of trainer Mary Wolfson. The filly sold for $1 million at the Fasig-Tipton Summer Selected Horsesof Racing Age Sale to Castleton Lyons, a week afterwinning the July 6 Princess Rooney S. AWe=ve done it with numerous mares, but that wasprobably the biggest ratio,@ Wolfson said. AWe claimedone for $75,000 and sold for $800,000 within sixmonths--Ask the Moon, who won two Grade Is. JessicaIs Back we claimed for $50,000 and she won$800,000, and we sold her for $500,000. GoldenMystery we bought for $100,000 and she earned$500,000, and she sold for $625,000. It=s what wedo.@ Starship Truffles= next stop is the GI Ballerina S. atSaratoga Aug. 23.

ABBOTT HAS THE PEDIGREE TO SUCCEEDby Alan Carasso Francis Abbott III is all of 30 years old and has beentraining horses on his own for less than three years, butgiven his family tree, he could be destined for greatsuccess in the Thoroughbred business. Hisgrandmother, Brushwood Stable=s Betty Moran, racedCreme Fraiche, who gave Woody Stephens the fourth

of five consecutivewins in the GI Belmont S. in1985, and has bredthe likes of RussianRhythm and HardSpun, to name but afew. His father isnoted bloodstockagent Francis AbbottJr., while uncle RickAbbott operates the

successful Charlton Bloodstock agency. Abbottmaintains a string of 12 horses at Fair Hill in Maryland--a Acomfortable@ number--including Nellie Cashman(Mineshaft), upset winner of the GIII Virginia Oaks July 13. Abbott=s earliest recollection of horses has nothing todo with the flat. AMy father worked for the National SteeplechasingAssociation and ran the Radnor Hunt [a series ofsteeplechase races] for about 25 years,@ the juniorAbbott explained. AThe races always took place onPreakness weekend, so we would always go back tomy grandmother=s place and there was always CremeFraiche=s saddle towel, so there was always aconnection there.@ Abbott began walking hots and grooming horses forhis uncle, trainer Michael Moran, once out of highschool, but left the United States to pursue a degree inmarketing in London. While there, his passion for racingintensified and he became fully immersed in thebusiness. AI worked for Charlie Gordon-Watson while overthere, spent some time at Watership Down and met alot of great people and went racing all the time,@ saidAbbott, who retains a distinct British accent as a resultof his sojourn in the United Kingdom. Following a four-year stint in England and oncefinished with his university education, he relocated toIreland and was lucky enough to latch on to anassistant=s position with trainer Aidan O=Brien atBallydoyle.

AThe experience with Aidan was great and I wasfortunate to work with such great horses, including U SRanger, Haradasun (Aus) and Yeats (Ire),@ herecollected. In 2007, Abbott accompanied theBallydoyle contingent to Monmouth Park for theBreeders= Cup meeting, which witnessed the untimelydemise of George Washington and a flat performancefrom reigning G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe winnerDylan Thomas, who didn=t handle the boggy going andfinished well down the field in the GI Breeders= CupTurf. ANot the happiest day of my life,@ he stated. Following his time under the tutelage of O=Brien,Abbott went to work for trainer Sir Michael Stoute, whom he credits with imparting the most practicalknowledge. AThat was a great experience with Sir Michael,@ headmits. AHe gave me more responsibility and I got someexperience with problem horses and helping load themin the stalls and things like that. I got to go to big racemeets and Royal Ascot, and the like. Even though I wasthere [with Sir Michael Stoute] the shortest amount oftime, that definitely was the time that I appreciated themost. He was very good to me. I enjoyed spending timewith him and learning from him and I=d say I amprobably as patient as I am with horses because of myexperience with him.@ Abbott acknowledges that this approach may not bethe most popular on these shores, but he is committedto it all the same. ASir Michael is known for his horses to continue toimprove as they get older,@ he explained. AI don=t know--I realize it=s probably not at the top of most Americans=list when they look for trainers to have their 2-year-oldsnot start until September and that they=re going to getbetter as they get older. A lot of owners don=t reallylook for that, but I enjoyed my time with Sir Michaeland his whole outlook on training.@ After a short tenure with the Todd Pletcher stable,Abbott took out his trainer=s license in October 2010. AI wasn=t there long enough to learn as much as Icould have, but I knew that I wanted to go and Iwanted to give it a shot and I was hell-bent on it at thatpoint,@ he said. And it wasn=t long before Abbott tasted success. Thevery first horse he saddled in November 2010, theBrushwood-owned Pink Palace (Empire Maker), brokeher maiden in a one-mile maiden special at Laurel. Shewas previously trained by Stoute to a pair of placings inEngland. Abbott, who according to BRIS statistics has saddled15 winners during his career, has also been representedin his brief career by MGSP Shimmering Moment (AfleetAlex) and Brushwood=s MSP Mr. Irons (Mr. Greeley),but it is the somewhat unlikely success of NellieCashman that has put him on the map. AFrom day one, she was nothing but class,@ heoffered. AThe guys who broke her down in Camden, they loved her. Ever since she came in, she=s alwaysgone the right way.@ cont. p12

But when she RNAd for$70,000, his mind was made up.He said, >I bought her.=@ A promising and running-onsecond in her career debut lastNov. 7, connections gave thePennsylvania-bred a crack at therestricted Blue Mountain S. twoweeks later, but she was forcedto hurdle a fallen horse at thehalf-mile pole and dropped back.Put away for the seasonfollowing a troubled fourth--placed third--at Laurel Dec. 6,she split a field of Gulfstreammaidens in her March return inHallandale, but bounced backwith a runner-up effort at Pimlicothe following month. From there,Abbott decided to call anaudible.

>[Jockey] Forest [Boyce] thought she needed the turfand Mario Pino worked her for me a couple of timesdown in Florida, and he came to me and said, >Haveyou ever turfed this filly?=@ Abbott commented. AI said,>No,= and he suggested I do that. I was kind of stuck onMineshaft and his dam. There was no propensity to turfon either her sire side or her dam side, but I think she=drun over hot coals, really. On Black-Eyed Susan day[May 17 at Pimlico], there was a nice maiden with anice pot and we gave her a shot there. We got Rosie[Napravnik] because it was one of the jockey=schallenge races and we ran second.@ Ahead of her thatday was the well-meant More Than Sweet (More ThanReady), who won a first-level Delaware allowance July 18, and two other fillies would win their nextstarts as well. Nellie Cashman followed suit, bestingPA-breds by better than five lengths at Penn NationalJune 21. With her maiden out of the way, Abbott IIIwas faced with the decision of where to go next.

AI felt that to win an a-other-than locally against olderhorses that she=d have to run to a significantly higherlevel,@ he reasoned. AI entered her in the Virginia Oakssomewhat as a precaution and to have a look. Shebreezed great the week before and she came out of thewin with a lot of confidence. I said, >Let=s take a shot.= Ithought Team Valor=s filly [Three Hearts, by Hat Trick]and Ken McPeek=s filly [Praia, by Distorted Humor]would be tough to beat, but that maybe she could holdon for third. Sometimes you just have to take a shot.@ And sometimes it pays off. Nellie Cashman fought onbravely for a half-length victory (video). The filly is owned by Sycamore Racing, and is one oftwo fillies bought during the first year of a syndicate offriends and family established by Abbott=s father. Thepartnership also currently has a pair of 2-year-olds intraining with Abbott and recently acquired a filly byHard Spun--Acrosstheborder (Include) for $97,000 atFasig-Tipton July, the sire of whom, as mentionedabove, was bred by Abbott=s grandmother. He creditsMrs. Moran with passing along some invaluable traitsfrom a professional perspective. AShe=s a very strong-headed woman, andperseverance would kind of be her motto,@ he said.AThere was always kind of a hard-headedness thatcame from her and that if you work hard enough at it,things will fall right eventually. You watch the horsesthat she=s bred over the years and all the matingsthey=ve done and to see it come to fruition is reallyneat.@ And what might be next for Nellie? AI=ve been looking around. There=s a PA-bred race atPresque Isle in the middle of August that I=d have tobelieve she=d look pretty tough in, or maybe I=ll freshenher and look at the middle of September at somethinglike the [GIII] Pucker Up S. at Arlington,@ Abbott stated.AI think I=d like to avoid some of those other 3-year-old fillies, like the first three home in the LakeGeorge [Wednesday]. There are some good 3-year-oldfillies around, so I think I=d like to duck and dive thoseand look forward to next year and the year after. She=sa big filly, 16.3, and she has the frame to fill into. Theowners want to race her and so do I.@
