Transcript of BGKC November 2013 Newsletter
We welcomed the month of November by finally starting K-Kids and volunteering at the most electrifying event of the year: the Electric Run, which preceded Color Me Rad, an event that seemed to have sparked a pink shoes trend among many. We then devoted an entire week to Key Club, which led up to Fall Rally and the week after that was booked with WADY, yet another Walk to End Alzheimer’s event, and DCM. We had a busy month, and I couldn’t be more thankful for all hard work and dedication in this club!
Michelle Phan describes how she spent her Saturday morning in her article “Color Me Rad” on page 3.
Richard Nguyen is at Six Flags! Why? Turn to page 6 to learn all about this spectacular event.

On Friday, November 1st, I attended
Electric Run for the first time. Instead of the
usual Saturday morning kind of service, this
project was held on a Friday night! After we checked in, we received our volunteer t-shirt,
a water bottle, and a snack. Most of my club
was at the cheer zone, but Jacquelyn,
Jennifer, and I were at the registration area.
The night was soon illuminated with flashing neon lights and other colorful and
bright lights. After helping around the
registration area, some of the other members
came to help put items into the inventory
and load the truck. After some heavy lifting, we were officially dismissed to the party area.

On November 2, I awoke in the early
morning and rushed to school to secure a spot for the event called Color Me Rad. Other Key Clubbers
had warned me of events like this one--they advised
me to bring a towel and sunglasses and to wear
clothes that I didn't care about. Watch out, they
said, you're going to have color all over you and you can't get it off for DAYS. In my head, I thought,
"Well, this could be fun."
Turns out, my experience at Color Me Rad
5k was probably one of my most unique volunteer
experiences so far... it splattered my whole body pink. But other than that, there were a few other
things that contributed to this unusual experience.
When we volunteers arrived at the entrance of the
park in which the 5k would take place, we were
ushered onto the back of a pick-up truck and driven to the center of the race where the start and finish
lines were. Then, in order to get us to the middle of
the race course where our color station was, we were
herded--over 50 of us--into the back of a large cargo
truck, standing room only... do I see a trend with truck transportation or what? Haha.
But, in all seriousness, our job during the
event--which was to throw colored starch powder at
runners--was very fun...and I understood what my
fellow Key Clubbers meant about bringing a towel
and sunglasses. The color was EVERYWHERE, to
the point where we all we could see in front of us
was pink. I came home with pink powder coating
my eyelids, inside my ears and my nose, and stained onto my hands. I have no regrets.

Key Club Week-Mondayby Jen K. Nguyen
Junior• • •
Key Club week is about showing the
community what Key Club is about. To do this,
every day during this week has a different theme to
help promote Key Club in the members’ lives.
Monday, November 4th, 2013, was the beginning of Key Club week. The theme of this day was to
“show your K in every way.” I decided to wear my
division t-shirt, teal American Apparel jacket,
handmade otter ears by Jenny and Jacquelyn, jean
shorts, teal active long socks, and teal shoes. Although non Key Clubbers did not understand
why I was all teal and thought I was weird, I was
proud and happy to be decked out in teal. I know
that our members are extremely spirited when
given the chance and hopefully next year, there will be more participants.

On Friday, November 1, 2013, the first K-
Kids meeting took place. I arrived and saw about
30 fifth and sixth graders. They were all very small
and seemed very interested in the activity that was
taking place. I would like to thank Rachael Yi, Tina Nguyen, and Van Nguyen on helping me on
the first portion of the K-Kids program. Without
these wonderful officers, this program would not
have been successful during its first meeting.
Although not everything went smoothly, I think that the future is bright for the K-Kids program. I
hope that in time, this small group of young
individuals in the K-Kids program will become
great leaders and help the community with their
vast amount of ambition and intellect.

On the 16th day of November, our Key
Club volunteered for WADY: We Aint Dead Yet.
We met up at Bolsa Grande High School at 7:35 in
the morning and left at 7:40, after I finished
checking the attendance list. Afterwards, we left and met again at 15000 Pacific St., Midway City.
After all the food boxes and binders arrived at the
senior citizen home, we got to work quickly. We
helped by passing out food boxes to the elderly.
Also, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, some members drew adorable turkeys on the boxes. Judy, as
always, bought us food: a box full of donut holes, a
bag of chips, and dip. Like always, we finished our
tasks efficiently, leaving some time for us to relax
on the couch and eat.

Got a soft spot for the young or elderly? Sign
up for these events! K-Kids is every Friday, after school at Cook
Elementary, and usually involves arts and crafts activities, homework help, or sports with fifth and
sixth graders. WADY is generally every
second Saturday of the month and
requires the delivery of food boxes to the
homes of retired seniors.
WHAT IS FALL RALLY?Where: Six Flags Magic Mountain
When: early November
What: Due to the District's massive size, two Fall Rallies are held each year; Fall Rally North in northern California and Fall Rally South in Southern California. Thousands of Key Clubbers gather at each Rally where LTGs and the District Board officers are "auctioned" off to divisions during a Spirit Session. Besides the auction, the Spirit Session will also include a huge spirit battle between divisions, and the winning division will be able to take home a beautifully crafted “spirit stick.” After the Session, attendees are then free to enjoy themselves at the theme park.
Why: Auction funds and a portion of the ticket sales are donated to the Pediatric Trauma Program. This event is a great way to help prevent pediatric trauma, have a great time with friends, at Six Flags and meet people from all over southern California!

The event of the season... Fall Rallyby Duyen Diep
Junior• • •
I attended Fall Rally for the
first time on November 9, 2013 and
was lucky enough to have my best
friend from Pacifica be my bus buddy. We arrived at Six Flags after about an
hour on the bus, and as we got our
otter whiskers and teal streaks
painted, we saw a mass of varying
colors from all the other divisions. Everyone rushed to go on rides, but I
was terrified of roller coasters.
However, Jenny and Jacquelyn
convinced me to go on Riddler's
Revenge with them, and afterwards, we had to rest because we were so
dizzy from the loops and turns of the
ride. We then walked over to the
theatre for the spirit rally and were
reunited with our division. I screamed at the top of my lungs during spirit
rally, losing my voice and hearing
several times. Our division ended up
getting to the third round to win the
spirit stick. After the spirit rally, we had free time to go on rides and eat. I
met several others waiting for their
friends because they were, like me,
scared of roller coasters! I made so
many new friends at Fall Rally, and I would have to say that Fall Rally was
the highlight of 2013 for me. I would,
without a doubt, attend Fall Rally
again next year.

For a few months now,
Peter Nguyen has been our K-Kids coordinator/chair/leader/
officer, but I have yet to talk
about him. When Peter was first
admitted as an officer, the whole
board was excited because he was our first male officer. I never
expected Peter to run for an
office position, but he is actually
a good officer. I know that he
was really nervous about his responsibilities, being Bolsa’s
first K-Kids Coordinator and all,
but truthfully, he has done a
great job. Peter has proven that
he's whole-heartedly taking his job professionally. From what I
have heard, people who have
attended the first K-Kids really
enjoyed it. I'm happy that our
club will get to experience the s u c c e s s i n t h e K - K i d s
department, and we owe it all to
Peter. I have never attended K-
Kids, but I hope to do so soon.

D u y e n D i e p i s m y invaluable Key Club Buddy!
Every Thursday at lunch, we
would leave piano class, head to
our lockers, and attend the Key
Club meetings; we carry out this same pattern together every
week, and it just comes smoothly
and naturally. I am very glad that
Duyen, my sister and I have gone
to WADY together, as well. It was a plentitude of fun, it induced a
lot of laughter, and I thoroughly
enjoyed every moment of it.
Although we have yet to go to a
Key Club event together since, we are looking forward to going
to much more. I am grateful that
she has joined Key Club this year
just like I did; since mostly
everyone else is familiar and regulated with the routines and
s u c h , a n d w e a r e b o t h
inexperienced, we bonded over
learning new things together. I
hope we will continue to get
along over the course of the year.

November 1st was Kevin Nguyen's birthday. He is a
freshman Key Clubber and my
y o u n g e r b r o t h e r . D o i n g
community service together has
brought us closer and I am thankful for that. We now share
the pains of waking up early for
morning services, sore throats
from yelling and cheering during
walks, and have matching volunteer t-shirts. I remember
last year when I first joined Key
Club. Looking back, I realized
that I made a lot of unforgettable
memories and I want Kevin to have the same thing. Before he
was in Key Club, he saw me wake
up early every Saturday morning
for community service and
thought that I was crazy. I guess we're both crazy now. It feels
great to talk about something Key
Club related and having him
actually understand what I am
talking about. Usually, siblings would feel awkward about being
in a club together, but I am
extremely glad that Kevin is a
part of Key Club and the
Division 4 North family.
Let’s shine the spotlight on some of our Key players...

“Christmas is coming and I am super excited for the upcoming Christmas social. I love going to our club's socials because at the end of each one, I always bond with new people... Also, I am excited for the food that will be there too. I can already imagine the table full of various entrees: egg rolls, fried rice, cupcakes, cookies, pizzas, etc. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!”
-Carmie Mach, senior
We were able to successfully run a really fun election for K-Kids. The candidates cheered each other on, wrote speeches, voted, and even provided bribes. It was really entertaining and the kids had a blast.
-Rachael Yi, senior
One thousand dollars. Our club has raised over a thousand dollars for UNICEF. I cannot express how proud I am of what our club has achieved.
-Van Nguyen, senior
I am happy to say that, once again, Bolsa Grande Key Club was awarded “Most Articles” at our most recent DCM. However, I do wish to be able to read more articles from different members rather than the same ones every month. Also, I will be striving for “Most Visuals” this month.
