Perimeter application with a liquid insecticide can control a variety of pests, including clover mites, spiders, field crickets, ants, boxelder bugs, and Asian ladybird beetles. These pests may be using the perimeter soil or features of the house as a harborage. Backpack sprayers are the most effective tool for outdoor application. Some backpacks have a pin-to-cone nozzle on the wand, but professional models have the option of a nozzle with a coarse and a fine fan spray. A fan spray pattern provides the best coverage when treating the foundation and adjacent soil. Spray pattern. A coarse fan spray from a backpack tank maintained between 35 and 40 psi will produce a spray pattern that is about 24 inches wide (when held about 18 inches from the surface). This is an ideal width because insecticide labels specify that perimeter spray may be 1 ft. up the foundation and 1 ft. out onto the soil (Termidor SC), or 2- 3 ft. out on the soil, or 2-3 ft. up the foundation or house siding (Suspend SC, Tempo SC). Application. Perimeter application should include treating the junction of the foundation and the siding, and the junction of the window ledge and siding. Pests such as ants and clover mites move along and within the gaps and edges at these sites, and from there they can get into the house. Boxelder bugs and Asian ladybird beetles use these sites as temporary and long-term harborages. Clover mites may also spend time there before they crawl into the house. Turn the extension over and direct the fan spray to the underside of these edges. Spray drift. Shrubs, flowers, and ornamental ponds are common around houses and commercial buildings. These features may be exposed to insecticide during spraying. Fish ponds are becoming a common feature in landscaping. The fish maintained in small ponds are sensitive to insecticide. Flowers and shrubs may be sensitive to water-based insecticides used for perimeter spraying. The primary danger is in the drift of droplets from the spray directed against the foundation wall. A light wind of 3 mph is enough to carry droplets from the edge of the spray pattern to surfaces that are 7-8 ft. away. It may be necessary to cover ornamental ponds with a plastic sheet during application. B&G EquipNet Technical Newsletter Apr 2007 PERIMETER SPRAY, DROPS AND DRIFT William H Robinson, PhD.
