• Local extraction is a common control measure

• But it’s important to make sure you have theright type of system

• One size DOES NOT fit all!

Page 48: Bf2 for iosh manchester 2017 for slideshare

www.breathefreely.org.uk www.bohs.org

Controlling exposures to prevent

occupational lung disease in

MANUFACTURING

This is the probably most common type of systemIn can be effectiveBut it isn’t right for all situations

Page 49: Bf2 for iosh manchester 2017 for slideshare
Page 50: Bf2 for iosh manchester 2017 for slideshare

Moveable arms require careful positioning so that the fume is captured effectively

Page 51: Bf2 for iosh manchester 2017 for slideshare

The hood needs to be very close to the source and ideally, above the source so the fume rises into the inlet

Page 52: Bf2 for iosh manchester 2017 for slideshare

Here the arm is positioned badly. The fume is rising into the hood but in doing so it passes directly past the welder’s breathing zone

Page 53: Bf2 for iosh manchester 2017 for slideshare

although this type of extraction can work in some situations it is not always a suitable approach. Other solutions are available.

Page 54: Bf2 for iosh manchester 2017 for slideshare

Controlling exposures to prevent

With smaller components an extracted welding bench will probably be the best solution.

Controlling exposures to prevent

With MIG welding on-torch extraction can be used. If properly set up this can be very effective as it captures the fume at source

Respiratory protection should always be the last resort, but it will be the most appropriate control for some types of work

Page 59: Bf2 for iosh manchester 2017 for slideshare

Powered devices which are built into the welding visor are likely to be most effective.
