Current Need for Faculty

• Serving as a clinical preceptor can serve as a bridge to becoming faculty if interested.

PAEA Annual Report, 2013 FTE: full time equivalent

Emily Davis
I would maybe simplify the point of this slide to the fact that there's a big need for faculty, instead of used to extrapolate that becoming a preceptor can/should lead to becoming faculty. Certainly a good talking point though.

The majority of PAs served in clinical practice prior to gaining new employment as PA faculty

Prior Experience

Emily Davis
Your comments in the Notes are great- all will help get the wheels turning for students so they have good questions to ask the panel.

Why did you become involved in PA education?

Today’s Panel:

Page 13: Beyond the clinic: An Exploration into PA Education Stephanie Neary, MPA, PAS2 Carl Garrubba, MPA, PA-C.

Clinical precepting can be a great way to transition into PA faculty if desired

There will be an increased need for clinical preceptors, PA faculty, and program directors in the coming years

It is never too early to start pursuing your interest in PA education

There are many opportunities available for students who want to become involved in PA education

Takeaways

Emily Davis
questions I have for the panel - how many years out do you think you need to be before considering taking a student as a preceptor, or taking a faculty job? Do you think an academic fellowship or additional training is necessary (or useful) before taking such a job? How does your faculty position benefit your clinical practice?
