    Ginkgo Doesn't WorkOr does it?...

    In August, a new study in theJournalof the American Medical Association(JAMA) said that ginkgo does notenhance memory or improve cognitiveability for healthy adults. However, HylaCass, MD, Assistant Clinical Professorof Psychiatry at the UCLA School ofMedicine, calls this study flawed andinvalid. According to Cass, the studygroup was given too small a dosage fortoo short a time.

    Cass cites a 1997 JAMA study onginkgo where the placebo group lost farmore mental capacity. That study, notes

    Mercury BannedBut not from your mouth

    The U.S. Senate voted on September5th to ban the sale of fever thermometers

    containing mercury. The EPA has esti-mated that mercury thermometers con-tribute 17 tons of mercury to our envi-ronment every year and that the mercu-ry from a single thermometer can con-taminate a lake 20 acres in size, makingthe fish unfit to eat. Ten states havealready banned the sale of mercury ther-mometers demonstrating a growingawareness about the toxicity of mercu-

    ry in the environment.While this is a good development and

    avoiding mercury in the environment isa worthy goalguess what? Dentistscan still legally put mercury in yourmouth! No one would dream of puttinga piece of toxic lead in their mouth andsucking on it 24 hours a day, yet mercu-

    ry is 8,000 times more toxic than lead,and dentists can still put it in ourmouths. (Just think of how many lakesthe mercury in your mouth could con-taminate.)

    Mercury in FishExposure up 500 percent

    The National Academy of Sciencesestimates that 60,000 children are borneach year with neurological damage dueto mercury exposure in the womb. As itturns out, mercury is passed on to anunborn child in the womb and also afterbirth in the mother's breast milk.

    Mercury can harm the developingnervous tissue in the fetus and in infants.This is why in 2001 the FDA issued anadvisory, warning pregnant women notto eat certain types of fish (includingswordfish, shark, and tilefish) and not toeat more than 12 ounces of any fish in aweek. However, canned tuna is a staplein many people's diets. Tuna is highlycontaminated with mercury, and preg-nant women and small children are bestadvised to avoid tuna.

    Exercise Prevents InfectionsWe don't "catch" colds

    The cold and flu season is here, sohow do you keep yourself healthy?According to a new study in Medicineand Science in Sports and Exercise, oneof the best ways to prevent a cold is toexercise. On average, American adultsget between two and five colds per year.(Healthy people live their entire liveswithout having a cold.) Yet those whoare the most physically active have the

    fewest colds. Now is the time to start agood exercise program if you don'talready have one.

    While this may seem an impossibgoal to some people, redoing yoschedule to include more exercise islot easier than redoing it because you asick. To make things easier, the exercican be broken up and spread out throuthe day. Brisk walking, bicycling, swimming or golfing without a cart are

    acceptable forms of exercise.These guidelines should not come

    a surprise. Our healthy ancestors gotlot more than one hour of exercise pday, and our bodies are designed require physical activity in order function properly.     At this year's annual meeting of theAmerican Academy for theAdvancement of Science, it wasannounced that obesity is now a globalepidemic. It was concluded that the fat-tening of the world's population is likelyto have "massive public health conse-quences."

    Excessive weight and obesity are onthe rise around the world. As more ofthe world's population moves away fromtraditional diets and does less physicallydemanding work, they are getting fatterand fatter. More than six out of tenAmericans are now overweight orobese. Overweight and obesity inMexico is now approaching ours, while70 percent of adult women in Egypt arenow overweight. Fortunately, the solu-tion is simple. Go back to eating fresh,whole foods and stop eating sugar andwhite flour. Then, get regular exercise.We are the most sedentary people in thehistory of the world.

    ChemotherapyIt's hypocrisy...BHN has always cautioned against

    the use of chemotherapy in the treat-ment of cancer. In our opinion,chemotherapy is ineffective and danger-ous. Well, guess what? That's whatoncologists (cancer specialists) think.Nonetheless, they still recommendchemotherapy to their patients. A studyby the prestigious McGill Cancer Centerin Canada found that 72 percent ofoncologists maintained that chemother-apy would be unacceptable for them-

    selves or their family because thesetoxic drugs are ineffective and danger-ous. These are the very same peoplewho tell their patients that chemothera-py will prolong their life. Is it any won-der modern medicine is in crisis?

    All disease is the result of malfunc-tioning cells. To get well, these cellsmust be restored to normal function.This is done with nutrition and detoxifi-cation, not by chopping people into

    smaller pieces or feeding them poison-ous chemicals.

    Vegetables and StrokeIt's the potassium...

    Most people do not get enough potas-sium because they don't eat enough darkgreen vegetables. A recent study inNeurology found that people with thelowest intake of potassium had the high-est risk of stroke. People taking diureticsto lower their blood pressure had aneven higher risk of stroke becausediuretics lower blood potassium levels.The researchers recommended that peo-ple pay more attention to potassiumintake, especially if they are on diuret-ics.

    One problem the study did not touchon was our high intake of sodium.Americans not only eat too little potassi-um, they eat far too much salt therebyupsetting the critical sodium/potassiumbalance in the body and contributing toevery kind of disease. Consuming lesssalt and more fresh vegetables and fruitsis the obvious way to go. An abnormalsodium/potassium ratio in our cellularfluid is a common denominator of dis-ease in our society because we eat somuch processed food.

    Vitamin E Protects the BrainReduces Alzheimers Risk...

    Four new studies, published in major

    medical journals, have found that vita-min E, from supplements or foods, canreduce the risk of developingAlzheimers disease.

    Two reports out of the Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke Medical Center inChicago highlighted the protectiveeffectiveness of vitamin E. In one study,815 elderly men and women weretracked for an average of four years.During this time, those who had con-sumed the largest amounts of vitamin Ewere 70 percent less likely to developAlzheimers disease, compared with

    people who ate little vitamin E.In a separate study, the diets and sup-plement habits of 2,889 people, ages 65to 102 were analyzed. The subjects weregiven four standard tests to assess theircognitive function, including memory,at the beginning of the study, and afterthree years. In this case, subjects whoconsumed the most vitamin E, from sup-plements or foods, had a 36 percentreduction in cognitive decline, com-

    pared with people who consumed littvitamin E. People getting large amounof vitamin E from foods alone had a 3percent lower reduction of cognitivdecline. Based on the tests, people taing or eating the most vitamin E hamental function eight to nine yeayounger than those who consumed litt

    Alzheimers disease, vitamin E is alsopowerful antioxidant helping to proteagainst cancer and heart disease. In study of 2,000 people with advanceheart disease published in the Lancethose who took 400 to 800 IU of vitamE daily lowered their risk of nonfatheart attacks by 77 percent.

    Vitamin E can be found in such fooas nuts and seeds, brans and legumeand vegetable oils. However, BHN reommends against the use of vegetaboils because they are highly processeand dangerous to your health.     Pessimists LoseOptimists win...

    Not surprising, but worth noting, omore study has confirmed what walready know. A recent study in thMayo Clinic Proceedings has found thoptimists have the best health over thlong-term and pessimists have thworst.

    A study that began in 1962 has founthat people who have an optimistic oulook on life live longer and have highratings in all areas of health, while pesimists have the lowest.     Question: At lot of my relatives have had cancer and I amconcerned about myself. I recently saw ads in the newspaperfor Full Body Scans and I was wondering if this was a goodthing to do.

    Answer: Full body CT Scans promise peace of mind, and a

    physicians referral is not required. They usually cost in therange of $800 to $1,500 and the results are almost immediate-ly available. The suppliers of these services claim that it isgood preventive medicine and that problems can be detectedearly when the cure rates are the highest.

    In my opinion, a Full Body Scan is something to do only ifyou want to get cancer, not if you want to avoid cancer.Radiation from medical X-rays may be our leading cause ofcancer, and these scans expose you to a lot of radiation. Theradiation from just one body scan is equal to about 150 chestx-rays, and some of the machines and/or operators delivereven higher dosages. Thomas Lee, Jr., a professor of medicineat Harvard Medical School, said that "It is impossible to finda doctor in favor of these scans who doesnt have a financial

    interest in a scanning facility." A good alternative would be afull-body Thermography. This is a safe, non-invasive proce-dure that measures temperature and can be correlated withvarious disease conditions and pre-conditions.

    Question: If you have cancer, do you have to eliminate sugarfrom your diet?

    Answer:Yes! All refined sugar mustbe removed from the dietof cancer patients. (Of course, no one should be eating refinedsugar in the first place.) Sugar is a "virulent, deadly poison"and a major cause of disease in our society. That said, it iscriminally negligent that the 4 million cancer patients in thiscountry are not being advised by their doctors to avoid sugar.(It is also criminally negligent that young children are allowedto consume such a dangerous poison.)

    Sugar feeds cancer cells. The way a cell makes energy isfundamentally different in cancer cells. Normal cells "burn"(oxidize) fuel to create energy. Cancer cells ferment sugar tocreate energy. However, this "anaerobic" process is inefficient;it is only 5 percent as efficient as oxidation. This is why can-cer patients lack energy and waste away. To create the sameamount of energy as a healthy cell, cancer cells need 20 timesas much fuelthat fuel is sugar. Whenever you eat sugar, thesugar content of the blood goes upthereby delivering morefuel to the cancer cells and allowing them to grow. Givingsugar to a cancer patient is like throwing gasoline on a fire.

    Numerous studies have found strong connections betweencancer and sugar. Large-scale epidemiological studies havefound that sugar consumption contributes to high breast can-cer rates. Experimental animals with cancer have a survivalrate directly correlated with blood sugar levels. Human stud-ies have found that consuming sugar inhibits the ability ofimmune cells to destroy cancer cells.

    It is absolutely essential that cancer patients eat a diet thatwill keep their blood sugar levels in the normal range. MostAmericans have very high blood sugar levels. Levels of 126

    mg/dL and above are considered diabetic and anything lethan 110 mg/dL is considered normal for an AmericaHowever, unlike Americans, normal blood sugar for humais less than 90 mg/dL. Since blood sugar is easy to measurthis is something cancer patients should be doing. High-quaity supplements are essential to normalizing blood sugar aseating a diet of fresh vegetables, high quality organic eggs a

    meat and lesser amounts of fruits, nuts, whole grains, aseeds. No sugar, white flour, white rice, dairy or processoils allowed!

    Question: My father has been diagnosed with Parkinsondisease. He is on L-dopa. Is that okay for him to take?

    Answer: I am not a medical doctor and I cannot tell yofather what to take. However, you asked for my opinion, ahere it is. In my opinion, there are many things your fathshould be doing, and the first thing is to get off L-dopa. Theis a good reason why medical intervention is the leading cauof death in America. It is because virtually all medication

    including L-dopa, do more harm than good.Parkinsons is a progressive neurological disease and us

    ally occurs in the middle-aged and elderly. It often starts wia tremor in one hand and may not become incapacitating fmany years. With full-blown disease, the facial expressionoften fixed, eyes are unblinking and staring, and walkibecomes slow and shuffling. L-dopa appears to help thepatients, but in the long run it kills them. L-dopa interferwith the ability of cells to make the high energy compounATP. With time, because the cells can no longer make enouATP, they die. When enough cells die, the patient dies and tdisease is history. This is how modern medicine curParkinsons.

    Chronic degenerative diseases are all inflammatory nature, including Parkinsons. Therefore it is important wthis or any chronic disease to get on a diet that does not prmote inflammation. Getting all of the poisonous, inflammatry foods out of the diet is essential. This means no sugar, whflour, dairy, or processed oils. Unfortunately, most people not associate white flour with deadly foods like pasta, so thavoid white bread and eat pasta made with white flour. Gettioff all gluten-containing foods such as wheat and rye is alessential. No processed food should be in the diet, especialany that contain toxins such as hydrogenated oils and artificcolors, flavors, and preservatives. Frequent saunas to help grid of stored toxins would also be helpful. After avoidininflammatory foods and eating more fresh veretables, get ongood supplement program with lots of high quality antioxdant, anti-inflammatory nutrients such as vitamins A, C, aE, CoQ10, quercitin, selenium and omega-3 fatty acidCoQ10 also slows the progression and does not require a prscription.

    In addition, there are medical pioneers who are having sucess in slowing down and even arresting the progression Parkinsons.     Question: Recently I have been reading that Canola oil is notgood for you. I have used Canola for years and it is in manyof the products I buy at the health food store such as granolabars. I would like to know what you think?

    M.M. Cambridge, MA

    Answer: I have never approved of Canola oil and have neverused it myself. This product is the result of genetic manipula-tion. It is highly processed and, in my opinion, toxic.

    Canola oil comes from rapeseed. Rapeseed contains a toxincalled erucic acid, which damages the heart. A group ofCanadians genetically manipulated the seed to produce a vari-ety low in erucic acid. Then they chose a new name that wasmore saleable to the public. Out of "Canadian oil" came theword "Canola." Canola has been advertised to the public as ahealthy oil because it contains about 10 percent omega-3 fattyacids and most people are deficient in omega-3s.

    While canola oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, they may bedoing you more harm than good. Canola oil has to be exten-sively processed to make saleable oil. It has a strong odor so

    it has to be deodorized at high temperatures. The result of thisprocessing is that the omega-3 oils are changed into trans-fattyacids. Trans-fatty acids are toxic. They interfere with fattyacid metabolism and get incorporated into cell membraneswhere they cause cellular malfunction. In July of this year, apanel of the National Academy of Sciences determined thatthere was no safe level of trans-fatty acids. The panel foundthat trans fats have a powerful association with heart disease.The Canadians claim that the amount of trans fats in the oil isonly 0.2 percent. Since there is no safe level, that is too much,but even worse, a study of various brands at the University ofFlorida found up to 4.6 percent trans fats.

    Perhaps even more enlightening is a series of studies onanimals. Rats fed Canola oil end up with heart lesions and

    vitamin E deficiency. Yet Canola oil is found in many productssold in health food stores, including the granola bars you men-tioned. The only oils I use are Barleans flaxseed oil, Barianiolive oil and Udos Choice.

    Question: I have had a series of kidney stones. Is there any-thing special I should be doing to prevent a recurrence?

    Answer: As with any disease, the first thing to do is get on agood diet. In the case of kidney stones, a low-salt, low-animalprotein diet along with increased water consumption has beenproven to cut the recurrence of stones in half.Supplementation with calcium is also essential. (Perque Bone

    Guard would be the supplement of choice.)

    Question: Are eggs good to eat if you are pregnant?R.D. Carmel, CA

    Answer: Real eggs are a good food and are okay to eat any-timeespecially if pregnant. What you have to stay awayfrom is the make-believe, toxic, egg-shaped objects sold insupermarkets. Those will make anyone sick. Commercialchickens are fed nutritionally deficient chicken feed that islaced with toxins. Real eggs are organically produced with

    chickens that are fed a minimum of grains. They eat a naturdiet out in the pasture where they consume insects, wormdandelions, pigweed, and other plants. A natural diet allofor development of essential nutrients in the egg that help create and sustain health, while minimizing a build-up of toins in the egg.

    Real eggs should be consumed during pregnancy becaueggs contain fatty acids that are necessary for the proper bradevelopment of the fetus. Including some organic ghee (clafied butter) in the diet would also be helpful.

    Once the baby starts to eat solid food, some real egscrambled over low heat with a little ghee would be an exclent "brain food."     Answer: The safest way to cook food is at the lowest possibtemperature that will do the job, and that is usually the teperature of steam or boiling water. Cooked food is a majcontributor to our epidemic of chronic disease. Anyone suffing from a chronic disease and hoping to get well would best advised to avoid cooked foods as much as possible. Wwere never designed to eat cooked foods, but we seem hook

    on them, so the least we can do is to cook in the safest wpossible. Steaming, boiling, and stewing food is the safest wto cook. At this temperature, less damage is done to the nutents and fewer toxins are created.

    Answer: I am pleased that the supplements have helped.Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that is multi-causal and polysystemic. It takes a lot of hard work to get itand even more to get rid of it. Getting off of most cookedfoods is important. Raw foods and fresh vegetable juices area real plus. Lots of vitamin C is important; you should be atbowel tolerance. Getting enough essential fatty acids isessential, and drinking plenty of pure water is also important.

    Many autoimmune syndromes are driven by food aller-gies. Diagnosing such allergies is essential. In one test ofover 6,000 patients, allergies were seen to play a roll in 85percent of the arthritics tested. One experiment you can do isto remove all the gluten from your diet.     Answer: The brown recluse spider is found primarily in theMidwestern states. However, it can be easily transported toother parts of the country and it is possible, though less like-ly, to be bitten by one in just about any state. Brown reclusebites have the potential to destroy tissue and create deepulcers. In the majority of cases there may be no reaction,except for a mild stinging sensation. In a minority of cases,there is a systemic reaction typified by fever, chills, nausea,joint pain and weakness. Depending on the amount of venominjected and the individual susceptibility to it, wounds maydevelop that take months to heal and even require skin grafts.Some people are particularly sensitive to recluse spider bites,and these people may require amputation of toes and fingers.

    Brown recluse venom contains enzymes that disrupt cellmembranes, causing cell and tissue death. Capillaries can be

    destroyed, shutting off the blood supply to tissue, causing tis-sue death and gaping wounds. Other components of thevenom can initiate systemic immune reactions. This venomhas a peculiar property of deep penetration into tissue andremaining there for years. In rare cases, reactions may occuryears later, even in other parts of the body, causing tissueloss.

    To address your question about surgery for the bite; it isprobably fortunate that your doctor did not do surgery.Surgical excision of the recluse spider bite is controversialand several studies have associated it with increased tissuebreakdown. Surgery does not necessarily get all of the venomout and serious tissue damage can still result, thus com-pounding the damage caused by the surgery. In fact, as withmost modern medical treatments, recluse spider treatmentsaddress only the symptoms and usually do more harm thangood. Current drug treatments include antibiotics, antihista-mines, and steroid hormones. All of these merely addresssymptoms by suppressing inflammation or the infection indying tissue. As these toxic medications wreck their harm onthe body, they do nothing to deal with the spider venomwhich is what is causing the problem in the first place.

    As for alternative approaches, there are several includingherbal treatments, high voltage shock, hyperbaric oxygenand homeopathic remedies. Homeopathic treatment withLachesis (a snake remedy) appears to be effective in neutral-izing the venom. Of course, this would be best done underthe supervision of a good homeopath.

    Hyperbaric oxygen treatments appear to help in two ways.Increasing the oxygen content of tissue deactivates the potentenzymes in the spider venom, thereby stopping the damageto cell membranes and tissue. In addition, the oxygen killsthe bacteria that are feeding on the dead tissue, thereby effec-tively stopping that infection, without requiring antibiotics.

    High voltage shock has been reported in the literature asbeing very effective. This technique uses high voltage withlow amperage direct current. The voltage deactivates theenzymes in the venom. As with the above treatments, shocktreatment should be done under professional supervision asthe sudden release of toxins and foreign proteins can put aload on the kidneys and other body systems. This treatmentis usually accomplished using a personal protection stun gunAn extension wire is attached to one of the guns electrodeswith an alligator clip and that wire is clipped to the oppositeside of the wound with a claw clip. The other electrode isthen pressed against the skin to get good contact and onesecond bursts are administered five or six times in a circlearound the perimeter of the lesion. If problems persist, youmay want to consider one of these options.
