“My love for nature, and man’srelationship with it, is the driv-ing force behind all of my art-work.” Bev’s work reflects herlove of horses, passion for thenatural world and her affinityfor the Native American’s spiri-tual relationship to the land.“For me painting is a growth
process. By giving each of my pursuits my besteffort, and by learning from my mistakes, doorshave opened for me that I could never have antic-ipated.”One of those doors was with The GreenwichWorkshop, who produced her first limited editionprint, Pintos, in 1979. It sold out at the publisherwithin weeks. “I am not a prolific painter,” Bevexplains.“My art style prevents that. Reproducingmy painting in print was the perfect answer. I wasable to concentrate on my most important ideaswhile still having my work represented in galleriesaround North America as well as abroad.
Nearly all of Bev’s prints have been sell-outs andfive books of her art have been released. Her first,TheArt of Bev Doolittle, is truly a phenomenon,hav-ing sold over half-million copies of its hardbackedition. Her subsequent books, New Magic, TheForest Has Eyes, Reading theWild were popular withboth the young and old. Her illustrated novel foryoung readers, The Earth is My Mother includesdozens of drawings and paintings, four of whichwere released in print. In 2004, after a five year hiatus, Bev returned tothe print art in the form of original, hand-pulled,stone lithographs. With some editions set at fewerthan 20 pieces, these original prints are alreadyrare.“Life is full of hard choices and the path of the
artist is no different. My advice to aspiring artists issimple: paint what you know, paint what you loveand always paint for yourself !”Bev, her husband Jay and their son Jayson liveclose to nature in the California high desert. JoshuaTree National Park is their backyard.
