very August, Vegas PBS presents the first on-air fundraising campaign
of our fiscal year, encouraging viewers who are not yet members to help
provide financial support for the programming they enjoy throughout the
year. Additionally, we ask current members who are inspired by our on-air
specials to renew their support or make an additional gift.
For this month’s campaign, Vegas PBS has put together a tremendous lineup of
musical performances from classic artists like the Grateful Dead, Dionne Warwick,
Leonard Cohen, and Peter, Paul and Mary. Several shows for you to enjoy include
superbly talented artists who appear frequently in Las Vegas, like Grammy-winning
saxophonist Kenny G, Mediterranean guitarist Pavlo, and iconic tribute band Australian
Pink Floyd. See page 14 or visit VegasPBS.org/tickets for details. Nostalgic viewers
will especially enjoy heartwarming and
hilarious retrospectives about the life and
careers of some of America’s most beloved
artists: Fred Rogers and Betty White. See
pages 8-9 for details.

of funds to victims and survivors, along with how the continuing news coverage impacts
victims and survivors. This special will air Friday, August 17 at 8:30 p.m. Additionally,

Nevada Week Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m.This new public affairs series provides in-depth exploration of the factors
and hard facts that drive Nevada. The show goes beyond breaking news, head-
lines and tweets to cover a wide range of important issues such as health,
water, transportation, arts and culture, education, economic development,
family income, social services, economics, and of course politics. The pro-
gram is hosted by Casey Smith, an award-winning journalist who has worked
in Nevada broadcast news for nearly two decades. Rather than simply inform-
ing Nevadans of critical issues, the show will inspire and empower each view-
er to make informed decisions or take personal action to impact the future
of the state. Encore broadcasts will air on Tuesdays at 11 p.m.,Wednesdays
at 4 a.m. and Sundays at 5:30 p.m.

Midsomer Murders Season 6Saturdays at 7:30 p.m.
Set in the deceptively idyllic fictional English county of Midsomer, this long-
running suspenseful drama features an eccentric cast of characters, ubiqui-
tous red herrings and quaint countryside scenery. At the heart of the show
is the perceptive and meticulous criminal investigator Detective Chief
Inspector Tom Barnaby (John Nettles). Season 6 opens with all-new episodes
on August 11, beginning with a scandalous mystery. Isobel Hewitt is an
affluent pensioner with a young lover. Duncan Golf is a GP in the Village of
Malham Bridge who is rumored to be having an affair. When their corpses are
discovered alongside one another by the river, Barnaby embarks on an inves-
tigation which uncovers a deep vein of resentment running through the vil-
lage. The series is pre-empted on August 18 for special
pledge programming.

FRONTLINE: Our Man in TehranMonday and Tuesday, August 13 and 14 at 9 p.m.This two-part series with New York Times correspondent Thomas Erdbrink
provides a fascinating and revealing view of life inside Iran. In part one, he
shares with humor and curiosity a rare journey into a private Iran often at
odds with its conservative clerics and leaders. Then in part two, Erdbrink
experiences more surprising encounters inside the closed society. Whether
protests about headscarves, visits to America or dreams of martyrdom, he
gets Iranians to reveal the intricacies of their private worlds.

Betty White: First Lady of TelevisionTuesday, August 21 at 8 p.m.Enjoy a warm look at the life and career of the beloved television and film
legend who celebrates 80 years in show business this year — officially the

Girls,” Betty White is also an industry pioneer. She was the first woman to
produce a national TV show, the first woman to star in a sitcom, the first pro-
ducer to hire a female director and the first woman
to receive an Emmy nomination. The film is packed
with hilarious clips from her long career, along

Broadcasters Opioid DocumentaryMonday, August 27 at 10 p.m.Following the initiative from Governor Sandoval, this local documentary will
bring awareness to the ongoing opioid epidemic, while presenting solutions
for recovery. Repeats Sunday, August 26 at 5 p.m. The film will be followed
by FRONTLINE: Chasing Heroin at 10:30 p.m. This searing, two-hour inves-
tigation places America’s heroin crisis in a fresh and provocative light —
telling the stories of people who struggle with opiod addiction, but also illu-
minating the epidemic’s years-in-the-making social context, deeply examin-
ing shifts in U.S. drug policy, and exploring what happens when addiction is
treated like a public health issue, not a crime.
FRONTLINE: American PatriotTuesday, August 28 at 10 p.m.This special goes inside the battle between
a ranching family in the West and the fed-
eral government, examining how a simmering fight over land in Nevada and
Oregon became deadly, invigorated a wider militia movement that continues
to challenge law enforcement. Drawing on deep access to key people on all
sides of the battle, the film traces the Bundy family’s story as ranchers in the
high deserts of Nevada, grazing cattle for generations on federal land and
ultimately going to war against the government. What began as one family’s
dispute with the government over grazing fees has reinvigorated a national
movement of self-styled militias and “Patriots.” They believe the federal
government has overstepped its authority, strayed from its founding princi-
ples, and is filled with agents they are duty-bound to oppose.

Detectives Wednesdays beginning August 8at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Philippe Roche (Philippe Lefebvre, “Tell NoOne”), of the quirky family-run privatedetective agency Roche and Son, has neverbeen one to take a case for money, much tothe dismay of his father Maxime (Jean-LucBideau). With his thrill-seeking, skirt-chas-ing, I-don’t-give-un–sou-about-money atti-tude, Philippe has been running it into theground, and the company is about to gounder. To save his namesake business fromruin, Maxime sets up a partnership withNora Abadie (Sara Martins, “Death inParadise”), a no-nonsense former Frenchintelligence officer, to bring some much-needed professionalism and discipline to theendeavor. But working with the rascally, albeit charming, Philippe, often proves to beas challenging as the cases. In French withEnglish subtitles.

Mark TwainThursdays, August 30 and September 6 at 8 p.m.
Samuel Clemens rose from a hardscrabble boyhood in the backwoods of Missouri to
become, as Mark Twain,America’s best-known and best-loved author. Considered in his
time the funniest man on earth, Twain was also an unflinching critic of human nature
who used his humor to attack hypocrisy, greed and racism. He created some of the
world’s most memorable characters as well as its most quoted sayings. And, in his
often-misunderstood novel Huckleberry
Finn, he shared with the world the master-
piece that Ernest Hemingway would call
the true beginning of American literature.
This two-part film by Ken Burns tells the
story of the writer’s extraordinary life —
full of rollicking adventure, stupendous
success and crushing defeat, hilarious
comedy and almost unbearable tragedy.
J A C K P O T ! S P O T L I G H T
Man with the Golden ArmSaturday, August 4 at 9 p.m. In this 1955 film, a strung-out junkie deals with a demoralizing drugaddiction while his crippled wife and card sharks pull him down. FrankSinatra’s crescendo performance, culminating in the searing “cold turkey”sequence, is one of the most memorable kick-the-drug-habit performanc-es ever put on film. Eleanor Parker is excellent as Frankie’s controllingwife, ostensibly confined to a wheelchair from a car accident caused byFrankie. Her performance is the focal point of the film, as she uses her dis-ability (which only the audience knows is a charade) to control Frankie’sactions. His one shot at a legitimate career as a musician and happinesswith the selfless Molly (wonderfully played by Kim Novak) is extinguishedby his wife’s controlling personality. This provides the film with the claus-trophobic atmosphere that makes everything work.
