Little engineers will enjoy a pretend ride on the rails as they step into our kid-sized train exhibit, Let’s Play Railway!, featuring an interactive engine, cattle wagon and caboose. Let’s Play Railway! promotes early math and literacy, encourages problem solving and helps young children develop important social skills as they practice communicating, sharing and taking turns. Play tables with open-ended train building sets and a book nook with train-themed stories round out the fun and learning.

Explore the science of motion in Velocity! Kids of all ages can roll and race golf balls on tracks that demonstrate momentum, gravity, speed, and distance in our fun interactive physics lab. As a ball makes its way on inverted loops, circular tracks, hills, and more, Velocity’s data visualization technology captures its real-time trajectory, velocity and motion in the form of colored lines of light. Visitors can see and compare their runs, along with other fun statistics, making them want to experiment again and again.

Blast off! Children will design, build and test their very own rockets, and then launch them dozens of feet into the air in the Museum’s atrium! Students will learn the importance of multiple iterations, that persistence pays off and that small adjustments can make a big difference.

What, where, when, why, how – and wow! Language arts take “center stage” when stories come to life in the Museum’s Theater. Children will plan, practice and perform scripts, and experiment with roles, improvisation and setting the scene. Through an in-class component, students will be able to perform stories that they write prior to visiting the Museum on our Theater stage.

The Museum’s Maker Initiatives have expanded our hands-on learning mission to the entire community, and have become one of the Museum’s most important investments. The Initiatives have received national recognition for increasing local awareness about the growing impact of making on education at all grade levels, as well as the influence of the global Maker Movement on job creation, the STEM skills gap, economic development and more.

In early spring, the Museum will open Brinn Labs, which will provide much-needed space for our growing Maker Initiatives. Making is a critical trend in education that is changing how students learn, how educators and schools teach (especially the critical STEAM subjects) and how communities like Milwaukee can better prepare children and young people for living, working and learning in the future.

Brinn Labs will be home to this important aspect of our educational mission, and underscore our unwavering commitment to ensuring that all children and families in our community have access to programs and services that can prepare them to become accomplished students and successful adults. Visit, learn more about classes and workshops coming up in 2018, and participate in hands-on equipment demonstrations and projects.

MAKING IN EDUCATION Conference

Making is transforming education at every level. Classroom teachers, administrators and others in the field are invited to participate in the 3rd annual Making in Education conference. The conference will offer panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and insightful presentations designed to share information, skills and strategies to encourage project-based and STEAM learning in schools, libraries and other learning spaces.

FIELD TRIPFRIDAYField Trip Friday invites elementary, middle and high school students for a behind-the-scenes experience at the Faire before it opens to the public. Field trips include an orientation with a Museum maker educator, a schedule of hands-on workshops and demonstrations with Faire exhibitors, and opportunities to talk with makers in a broad range of fields, including electronics, welding, digital fabrication, sustainability and more.

Please contact the Museum a minimum of two weeks in advance to make your reservation. Your visit is not officially reserved until you have received confirmation from the Museum, after the Museum has received a completed confirmation form and payment in full, both due at least one week in advance of your visit. Unregistered groups arriving at the Museum will be charged based on the number of children in their group, and will be assessed a $20 late-registration fee. The Museum reserves the right to cancel field trips that have not fully registered in advance. The Museum requires one chaperone (18 or older) for every five children. Museum exhibits and programs reflect national and Wisconsin state academic standards, Common Core Standards, developmental milestones recognized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, Next Generation Science Standards, and Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards.

All field trips include an opportunity for children to explore the Museum’s educational exhibits and activities based on their age, interests and developmental abilities.

Focused Field Trips expand on classroom curricula or provide quality preschool experiences with facilitated workshops that encourage learning through materials and tools, props, demonstrations, and group interaction. Workshops are offered in a variety of engaging themes that promote science, math, environmental education, health, social studies, the arts, financial literacy, and more.

Be A Maker Field Trips are conducted in our Be A Maker space, a communal workshop featuring equipment, tools and technology resources for tinkering, building and learning new skills. Workshops address both current academic standards and new models for education that emphasize innovation, creativity and resourcefulness.

Chaperones: One adult chaperone (18 or older) is required for every five children. Required chaperones are free; additional adults are $5 each. Other coupons, vouchers and Museum memberships do not apply toward school group admission rates.
