ThankyouforyourinterestinYaleUniversitySchoolofNursing!Wewelcomeapplicantsfromallbackgroundsandexperiences,bothnursesandnon-nursesalike.ThehardesttaskistochoosethosewhohavewhatittakestobeaYaleNurse.Allareintelligentandmotivated,butwhatseparatesthemistheiruncommonsocialconscience.YaleNurseswanttochangetheworldandassurethatallhaveaccesstohighqualityhealthcare.Theyareunafraidofchallengingthestatusquo,ofquestioning“why,”andofcreatingnewmodelsofpatientcare.TheycometoYalebecausetheyknowthattheywillbepreparedtonavigatecomplexsystems,tocareforindividualsandfamilies,andtoadvocatefortheirpatientsandcommunities.
Analumnarecentlyrelatedanexperienceshehadanumberofyearsago.Shewasthenurseinchargeofstaffinginalargeurbanclinic.Duringaparticularlybusyday,theywereshort-staffedandoneofthecliniciansimpatientlyrequestedadditionalnurses.Theclinicianthenadded,“….andgetmeaYalenurse.”
EvidencethatYaleNursesarecarryingoutourmission,“betterhealthcareforallpeople,”canbefoundaroundtheglobe.Astheworldcontinuestoshrink,ournursesareattheforefrontofbringingaboutchange,whetheritishereinNewHaven,inhealthcaresettingsthroughouttheUnitedStates,inuniversitiesandmedicalcentersaroundtheworld,oreveninremotevillageswithlimitedaccesstohealthcare.
Inadditiontoacademicandclinicalexcellence,ysnisontheforefrontofgroundbreakingresearchinhealth-relatedbehavior,improvingself-managementinpeoplelivingwithchronicillness,andinthedevelopmentofnewevidencetosupportnursingpractice.Sinceitsinceptionin1923,ysnfacultyandstudentshavedevelopedstrategiestoaddressthemostpressingglobalhealthcareproblems.

“Nursingconnectsus:thepast,thepresent,andthefuture.Whoweareasnursesbeganwithinus,butwhatwebecomeinnursingbeganhereamongstourpeers,ourprofessors,andmostimportantly,ourpatients.Ifwecouldcapturethefacesofthosepeopletheonesyouwillneverforget—theoneswhotookyouonthatprivilegedjourneywiththem.IfyoucouldrecallthechallengestheyfacedwithinthecontextoftheircarethenIwouldthinkthisiswhattheirphotographwouldsaytous:betterhealthcareforallpeople.AstheYaleSchoolofNursingmotto,itcouldnotspeakmoreprofoundlytothehopesandchallengeswefacewithinhealthcare….Amongusaremenandwomenwhowillseekarolewithinthisdebate,whowillmoldandredirectthedeliveryanddiscourseofhealthcare.Wearethediversecommunityofscholarsandclinicianswithacommongoal:betterhealthcareforallpeople.Howeachofuswillmakedoonthatpromisewillbeindividual.ButIknowthis:therearepeopleouttherewaitingonyouandme.”
TheA+specialtyisdesignedtopreparenursepractitionerstomeettheprimarycareneedsofdiversepopulationsthroughoutthelifespan.Thecurriculumfocusesonthediversehealthcareneedsofpatientsservedinamultitudeofsettings.Eachpatientisviewedinrelationtohisorherself-describedfamilyandcommunity.Thiscur-riculumintegratesresearch,clinicalpractice,andpolicytopreparenursepractitionersasleadersinprovidingprimarycare.
TheAdult/GerontologicalNursePractitionerspecialtypreparesstudentstodeliveradvancednursingpracticehealthcaretoado-lescents,adults,andolderadultsinavarietyofhealthcaresettings.Coursecontentandclinicalexperiencesfocusonprovidingcaretoadolescentsandadultsintheprimarycaresettingandtoolderadultsinbothoutpatientandinpatientsettings.Thisdualtrackpro-grampreparesthegraduateasaprimarycareproviderforadoles-cents,adultsandolderadultsandasaGerontologicalspecialist.
TheFamilyNursePractitionerspecialtyemphasizestheprimarycareofadults,adolescents,andchildrenwithinthecontextoffamily-centeredcare.ItbuildsontheAdultNPcurriculumwiththeaddi-tionofdidacticandclinicalcoursesfocusedontheprimaryhealthcareofchildren.Coursecontentfocusesonprovidingadvancednursingpracticeprimarycaretoindividualsacrossthelifespanandfamiliesinallstagesofdevelopment.Clinicalexperiencesoccurinvariedprimarycaresettings.
