The MH20M motorized EDM has been designed to drill the tiny holes in any conducting gasket material that the diamond anvil cells (DAC) operation requires.

Fast drilling, high hole shape quality, high accuracy in centering and very easy operation make the MH20 the best tool to prepare the gaskets used in high pressure physics.

Features :

Drilling diameter : from 20µm to 500µm. Centring accuracy : < 5µm. Drills in any conducting material : Stainless steel, rhenium Easy to operate Fast drilling : 40µm /minute for a 200µm hole in a stainless

steel gasket Possibility to change the polarisation and to tune both the

voltage and the current : to optimise drilling performances as a function of gasket material, thickness and hole diameter.

Centering microscope (x 400) Observation microscope (x 40) Motorized drilling : the voltage between the electrode and the

gasket feeds back to control the movement of the vertical table. Weight : 12 kg; Size : 19 cm wide., 33 cm deep., 42 cm high.

Principle of drilling. (Spark Erosion with wire)

An electrode [B], at high voltage, spark erodes ametallic gasket [C] immersed into a dielectric liquid(e.g. light oil). The electrode is fixed. The tank «gasket holder ‘[D]set on the vertical micro translation table [E], movesup automatically during drilling.

Other characteristics. Before drilling, the centering of gasket is done by themicro metric XY stage [F] (the rotating head [A] hasto be rotated by 90° into the centering position). The adjustable electrode holder [G] makes it veryeasy to install and adjust new electrodes.

NOTE : Manual drilling is also possible with themotorized MH20M.

The electrode holder TP1 has been designed to simplify drilling with the MH20 series spark eroder. It is standard on newer models of the MH20. This new holder can replace the existing holder on older MH20 . Mounting and adjustment of the new electrodes are very easy. Some aspects of drilling are simplified.

• Height adjustment of the electrode : 20mm. Continuous and soft by knob

• Electrodes :Required Type II Low cost electrode. Mounting or unmounting very easy

• Setting of the holder on MH20 : Can be done easily by the user.

Type II electrode

Stainless steel tube 1,6 mm Tungsten

50 mm 5 mm

Electrodes : 50µm ,80µm, 125 µm, 150 µm, 200 µm, 250 µm and needle.

The height of the electrode can be adjusted continuously so it is

not necessary (as it was in older versions of MH20) to lower the

gasket holder before rotating the drilling head.

The gasket holder can be fixed at the focus-plane of the

centering microscope and drilling can always start at this

position.

Ref : [GAM]Features• Centring accuracy : < 5µm.• Lighting: retro light using an ultra-bright LED.• Centering microscope* • Observation microscope*Size: 19 cm wide., 33 cm deep., 42 cm high.

Various additional options allow • Maintain your DAC to align your diamonds.• Add a mini resistive furnace to accelerate the glue

polymerization.• Measure your indented gasket thickness.• Load samples and ruby in your DAC.

* For the BETSA EDM users: both machines use the same optical components.

The Gluing & Alignment Machine [GAM] makes it easier the gluing of your diamonds on seats, on rockers and even on drilled diamonds. This machine can also measure the thickness of indented gaskets; control the MDAC alignment and the loading quality. It is made on the same mechanical structure than our EDM.

High accuracy in centering and very easy operation makes the GAM the best tool to prepare your high pressure experiments.

Example of use: diamond gluingThe [GAM] operation is similar to that of the [MH20M] EDM:1. Drive both the holding rod and the microscope to the reference point using the rotary head,

and the [GL100] XY stage.2- Put the diamond in place and align it using the second XY stage while looking through the

centering microscope.3- Rotate again the head by 90° to place the holding rod on the culet center.4- Move up the Z stage to press down the diamond, and glue it.

Other characteristics. The [GAM] positioning block can accept parts that are up to 20mm in height and 30mm in

diameter . The positioning is highly reproducible and can be adapted to receive parts of any otherDAC type .

Performances :

The BETSA Raman Optical Transfer was designed by BETSA and tested by Paul Loubeyre’s team (CEA). Fig. 1 shows an overview of a complete Raman measurement setup including a BROT.The BROT was designed and tested to be able to measure a Raman signal using a minimal Laser power. The laser power reaching the sample amounts of 83% of the incoming laser power. Using a Ø50µm core fiber optics, and a 300mm Shamrock-type Andorspectrometer, only 25mW of laser power are needed to make the 1st order Raman feature of silicon appear in 1s of integration time.
