Bethel Pieces Vivian Douglas Summer Update!

Last summer, Vivian Douglas, our missionary from Casa Bernabe Orphanage in Guatemala, brought two of the teenagers from her advanced band to the United States for a music camp. It worked out so nicely, that this year she’s bringing more! The week before they head to the music camp will be spent in Cleveland, doing service projects and outreach. Before that happens, however, Vivian will spend the month of June here in Cleveland by herself. While here, she will give us an update of how God has been at work in Casa Bernabe. For those interested in seeing her, Vivian will be in the Cleveland area from May 31 to July 5. Vivian will arrive with members of the Casa Bernabe advanced band in Cleveland on July 10, and they will leave Cleveland for Csehy summer music camp on July 18. They will all return to Guatemala on August 2 from Cleveland Hopkins airport. If you are interested in contributing money towards the Casa Bernabe advanced band’s trip to Cleveland and Csehy summer music camp, checks may be sent to: Friends of Children Everywhere P.O.Box 6904 Kokomo, IN 46904-6904 Be sure to mark the memo: Music Festival More information on their trip, the fundraiser, and Casa Bernabe in general is available on the table in the foyer or by contacting Vivian at viviandou@sbcglobal.net . Please look through this list of needs and see if there is some area through which you can help!

1. A car is needed for part of the time that Vivian is in Cleveland by herself (June).

2. Meals will be needed to help feed the Casa Bernabe band kids while in Cleveland. More details to come.

3. Transportation will be a major need during the time that the group of band kids are in Cleveland. Options include either loaning a minivan for Vivian to drive, or chauffeuring rides. 4. Another minivan or a luggage rack that she can use for the last 2 weeks of July to attend band camp with children from Casa Bernabe in upstate NY. If neither of these items are available, Vivian is in need of someone to take and then retrieve them from New York. Womens’ Progressive Report by Pat Brim

On Saturday evening, May 1st, about twenty-five woman participated in a Progressive Dinner. Four members opened their homes for the appetizer

hour and four members hosted entrée in their homes. Dessert was held in Bethel’s Chapel at 7:45p.m., where everyone gathered to enjoy fellowship

and delicious desserts.

The theme of the Progressive Dinner was practicing the 3 H’s-HOME, HOLY SPIRIT & HOSPITALITY. God blessed us with sunshine and no rain while we traveled from house to house. Once we all returned to Bethel’s

Chapel some of the talk was about how great it was to be in a relaxed atmosphere and at the same time enjoying scrumptious food. FOOD SO

GOOD the ladies thought Emeril Lagasse had been the chef and prepared the entrée for them. We laughed and shared interesting events from our

lives- which included what the differences are between an ICEBOX and refrigerator—I MEAN A REAL ICEBOX”.

The dinner was hosted by the Women’s Ministry Team of Bethel, we would

like to give a hearty THANK YOU to the ladies who volunteered and opened their homes for hospitality and fellowship. Rose Gott, Jenn

Barlett, Carolyn Mizell and Celeste Gary for the wonderful appetizers/salads they served. Marlo Apple, Pat Brim, Barb Sosnowski and Nicole Wong served entrée which was so good, that seconds were the order of

the day.

THE TIME WAS ENJOYED BY ALL!!!!!!!!!!!

The food was so delicious that a guest requested the recipes to share with her family and friends.

To my Bethel family: I must confess that while I understood the rationale for having the “Deaconess Corner” article, I procrastinated for months because I don’t like writing about myself. The goal was to give our Bethel family an opportunity to get to know the Deaconess a little better. Now, if you were to ask me to write about the goodness and faithfulness of God and some of the wonderful things that He has done in my life, I can do that. However, to write something just about Celestine was not at the top of the list of interesting things to do. However, since my time of procrastination has ended, here you go. I am Cleveland Ohio born and raised and had the privilege of spending my entire life in the church thanks to my parents. In fact, I met my husband Wesley of 26 years in the church choir. He has a wonderful tenor voice, so you should all encourage him to sing. I love being Mom to two high-spirited daughters, Jacquelyn and Dameyon, who has also given me the blessing of being endearingly called “Gran” by grand-daughters, Mattison (8) and Morgan (5). God brought us to Bethel about 15 years ago and we were able to witness Jacquelyn’s profession of faith and baptism within this body of believers. Needless to say, we have a lot of love for the Bethel family. During that time, I’ve had the opportunity to serve as worship leader; work with both the children’s and adult choirs; teacher for children’s Sunday School, Pioneer Girls, VBS and Tuesday Night Children’s Ministry; women’s conference speaker; and currently have the privilege of serving as Deaconess to our body, with special emphasis on the area of worship. WORSHIP falls right in line with one of my greatest passions, acknowledging the WORTHSHIP of GOD. Anyone that has taken the time to get to know me will discover that worship of God impacts most things that I do. God even showed me the tough lesson of making even the difficult things of life (e.g., getting back out into the job market after 16 years) an act of worship. I guess the one thing that is probably most visible about me at Bethel is worship of God with enthusiasm when we come together as a body of believers. Not just as a routine, habit, or something that I know I ought to do, but a true desire to worship the One who saved me from the penalty of sin, who wakes me up every morning, who keeps me and my family safe, the One who loves me unconditionally! I think that He is worth true worship and praise! The Bible says, “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.” Somehow, I just think that should come with some enthusiasm because of who God is and all that He has done! As a worship leader I get to see the expressions of those before me and sometimes it seems as though we never even pay attention to the words of our worship songs, as if we’re singing them on auto-pilot. I just want to share a portion of a song that we sing, to draw your attention to the rich message that is contained there. “Oh to see my name written in the wound; for through Your suffering I am free. Death is crushed to death; life is mine to live. Won through Your selfless love. This power of the cross; Son of God slain for us. What a love, what a cost. We stand forgiven at the cross!” So the next time you pick up that worship folder on auto-pilot, “Think about the His love. Think about His goodness. Think about His grace that’s brought us through. For as high as the heavens above, so great is the measure of our Father’s love. Great is the measure of our Father’s love.” His love alone should move us to respond in true worship, for God is worthy to be praised! Well, that was me speaking from the heart. I was completely taken by surprise and I was humbled that you went to so much effort to celebrate with me. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! May God richly bless us all, Pastor Holloway!

Track & Field Selected Struggle: Patience

Dictionary definition: ―Quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care; diligence.‖

My definition: ―An ability to endure trials or wait for blessings in

God’s time. Waiting for God’s will and purpose to be fulfilled in your

life.‖

Favorite Scripture that deals with patience: Isaiah 40:31

(NASB) – ―Yet those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.‖

Why I chose this verse: ―This verse talks about patience in the sense of strength. Patience is a tough characteristic to manage, but, if you allow

patience-requiring situations to help you grow, they will give you the strength to go above and beyond any obstacle. Patience will only deepen our relationship with God because it causes us to lean on our faith and trust Him.‖

How patience applies to sports: ―I feel that God has a purpose for me in whatever happens on the track; I just have to trust that His plans will be done in my athletic career. Sometimes I think I’m ready to receive a certain

blessing, but God will have a plan that doesn’t look like what I had envisioned. In these cases, the wait might include being patientmthrough pain.

―That situation actually happened to me during the 2009 NCAA Championships. I was the favorite to win the 400, but I didn’t. It was difficult to be patient through the disappointment and to think that I had to wait another year to try to

win a national championship, but God had something greater for me. My performance was actually good enough to represent the U.S. on the World Championships 4x400 relay team.‖

How patience applies to life: ―Trying to balance school and athletics can be really challenging. My patience is con-stantly being challenged with demands from the classroom, the track and people. Many things in life could frustrate or

discourage me, but having patience through stressful situations calms the nerves that come with frustration.

―Patience goes hand in hand with faith in God. We might want something now, but God is teaching us patience as we

wait for His will to be done in our lives. We are on God’s time, not our own. Patience proves our faithfulness.‖

Jones—and Beard’s faith are still going strong.

―FCA allows us to join with other athletes who are competing for reasons greater than personal achievements,‖ Beard

said. ―Our team Bible studies have given us the chance to better understand each other and our individual faith journeys.‖
